1 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/27/2018

While driving at 40 mph getting off exit 100 off of route 81, the power steering to the right wasn't working, being very hard to turn. As I turned the steering wheel a little to the left, the steering loosened and allowed me to turn right very slowly. I returned to driving as the steering seemed to be working properly as a few tests in the parking lot indicated that it was working properly. Fortunately, I made it home but as I turned to the street to take me home, I heard a loud clunk from the front. As I turned into the driveway, I heard the clunk again. I let the car sit overnight. When leaving the next morning, the steering wheel, nor the tires themselves, would turn to the right at all! the steering motor had been replaced by a recall and then I had to replace the replacement 3 years later! I had to have the tie rod ends replaced under warranty with only 15,000! now I don't know if I want to put more money into it. It wasn't a horrible car and it did well, but seeing all these posts makes me think this was a design flaw that they turned a blind to.

The car last night had power but would not turn over or attempt to start. When driving at highway speeds the steering is loose, at low speeds power steering sometimes works. Loud popping in slow sharp turns. Just had it checked and new tires said suspension was great.

Failure Date: 12/03/2014

When driving the vehicle and going over bumps, there is a clunking noise from the steering column. Overall, the steering column appears loose, the steering wheel is hard to turn left or right and clunks as well. Took it to two different ase certified mechanics and was told that the steering is loose inside the column itself. Steering is not responsive to turns as it should be.

6 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/13/2012

Gm is not fixing the whole power steering issue in their Cobalts. I had the recall fixed, the power steerign motor, on 10/10/12 and three days later it failed again. I was exiting i95 in wilmington, DE and was very close to hitting the concrete divider on the exit ramp to us 202. The problem with the car is the whole steering column is faulty. Looking around in the internet shows many others that were told they needed to replace the steering column to fix the power steering issue, same as my dealer told me. But all gm is doing is fixing the chepest part. I have tried their customer service and get nowhere. They say they fixed my power steering problem and get all defensive when I tell them that it still happens. It happens after driving about 200-250 miles. Local trips are fine except that the steering looses feel and shakes and feels bumpy in the steering wheel. For the safety of all people on the road I feel you guys should test some Cobalts on a good 300 mile trip and see what happens. I'll even lend mine to you if you want.

7 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/24/2009

2007 Chevrolet Cobalt lt has power steering problems. Many other owners have same problems with the power steering. I have had the car in the shop at the dealer and they found a lower control arm bushing bad and replaced the bushing however it did not fix the power steering problem. The steering is loose and feels like part of the steering may break at any time while driving the car. The rack and pinion that is electric power steering system is at fault and hundreds or thousands of owners of these cars are having dangerous steering problems. Please help gm understand that peoples lives are on the line that drive these cars. I feel gm should have a recall to save lives and take care of this dangerous problem with the Chevrolet Cobalt. Thank you.
