9 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 02/04/2013

The abs light comes on and brakes go to the floor with minimum to no stopping power. When this happens the brakes wine. After this happens brakes return to normal but the abs light comes on and stays on until the vehicle is cycled on/off. Once the computer sees that there is no issues with the abs, the light goes off. This leaves you to believe that there was a "bug" in the electronics. Then without warning or a duration of time the problem comes back. And then this process starts all over again. Whats happens when I need the brakes to prevent a accident? after researching online this is a very common issue with this vehicle.

11 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

For the past couple of years there has been a problem with my anti-lock brakes. When applying the brakes, the brake pedal vibrates excessively as if the anti-lock brakes are activating. After a short time driving, an abs warning light activates indicating a fault. I am very concerned because first, the brakes do not act in the way a driver would expect and when applying the brakes I get concerned every time that the brakes will not work. Secondly, I believe the fault may cause the abs to no longer function in conditions it has been designed for. Upon further research of this problem, it is apparent that this is a widespread issue among Colorado and canyon trucks. A "fix" for this problem is reportedly in the range of $1500 with many owners reporting that the problem has returned or continued. I feel that any issue involving a faulty brake component must be addressed as soon as possible. Chevrolet has chosen not to do this and I fear this may be yet another failure on the part of gm to address a safety issue involving one of their vehicles. I would have a hard time believing that I am the first to report this issue. I really do not want to become a statistic. Please help! thank you kindly for your time. Please note that the incident date, mileage and speed are only estimates.

12 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

My abs fault light is coming on and the brakes are grinding as though I am sliding across an icy road. I just put on new brake pads at a dealership in March and no one mentioned that I had a problem. From what I heard the problem can be pulling the abs plug or spending thousands at a dishonest dealership. It is very dangerous and I have read on forums that this abs fault issue is a wide spread serious one. I love my truck and it has lot of mileage but this was going to be a problem on my chevy Colorado no matter what so it seems to me this should have been a recall.

13 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 03/23/2012

The brakes began squealing at mainly low speeds so I took it to midas. They claimed chevy has some sort of defect because the rotors were pitted and damaged and it should not be with a vehicle with less than 35,000 miles. This vehicle is not used hard hence the mileage and it is 5 years old. They claimed that when they called the chevy dealer, chevy claimed that both rotors and hubs needed replaced on the model because this is a known issue with this model of truck. I had them replace everything which cost me around $1,300 dollars and now the abs default light will not go out. I have never owned a vehicle that needed this much work to the braking system and that cost this much to repair with less than 35,000 miles on it. This needs to be reviewed and if this is a defect that chevy is aware of, they need to both fix the problem and compensate individuals who have made this very expensive repair because this is wrong. I would appreciate if someone could look into this problem because I am not getting any satisfaction on this from anyone else. Thank you.

14 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/12/2011

Abs kick in when vehicle is cold in the morning, then disable along with an abs fault light on the instrument panel, then goes away in the afternoon. The abs kicks in and the brake pedal will not go down.

15 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/02/2011

When the vehicle is start the abs fault message is given and the abs light illuminates. On other occasions, as the vehicle is driven after being started a clicking/grinding noise emits from the front drivers side area then the abs fault message is given and the abs light illuminates. The abs then will not function or will function each time the brakes are used even in a situation where they should not be locking up. The fault has began between the time the vehicle is started and 25mph.

16 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/15/2011

Sometimes when braking the abs will come on till the vehicle stops, and the abs warning light comes on till you turn the car off. When the car is restarted the warning light is off till the abs comes on again mostly when coming to a slow rolling stop,ie. Red light ,stop sign. I have talked to other owners of this vehicle who are having the same problem.

17 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/03/2011

Abs warning light will come on in dry weather and abs will engage diminishing braking. This is a known problem with Chevrolet and GMC 2004 - 2006 Colorado and canyons. GMC will refuse to do anything about it. My personal case is that they told me that they closed my complaint until I spend $100. To have diagnostics run for the error codes. All one has to do is go to edmunds. Com and look at the hundreds of complaints out there for this very problem, or any other vehicle forum for that matter. Even the error codes are shown. I finally relinquished and took vehicle to dealer to have codes read. Just like the forums state the error codes came back, c0035, left front sensor and c00220, left front in release too long. Sensor and new hub is estimated by dealer to be $762. 00!!!!dealer also stated gm is aware of this problem and it is due to poor/flawed design. My vehicle, even though it is a 2005, is in showroom condition. I severely baby this truck, even to the point I paint the undercarriage 3 - 4 time a year. This is a true safety hazard and will cause an accident due to the abs engaging unexpectedly in completely dry weather and the brake pedal begins to thump and braking is severely reduced.

18 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 10/07/2011

Vehicle for no apparent reason will engage abs where brakes will pulsate and a temporary reduction in brakes will occur. This will occur when there is no rain, streets are dry and sunny. Immediately after this occurrence the abs fault light will come on and stay on until car is stopped, turned off, and restarted. Took vehicle in to gm dealership and they said brakes were fine. When abs engages, for no apparent reason, one will feel brake pedal pulsating and a loss of braking which causes some immediate alarm for fear of running into somebody or possibly allowing car to go too far into an intersection when trying to stop. Many web sites, forums and blogs, such as edmonds are loaded with these complaints on 2004 - 2006 Colorado's, as this is not just a single occurrence in a couple of vehicles. Contacted Chevrolet but they always point me to dealership for them to read computer code for error at a cost of $100 and then will price out the cost for repair. This is a safety hazard that gm is very aware of and selects not to address.

19 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/24/2011

Abs warning light goes on and abs engages even at low speeds, very strange and possible dangerous situation. Took vehicle to mechanic and he advised the design was terrible and could not replace the sensor but rather had to replace the both front hubs that included a new sensor@$1300. Gm should think about a redesign and/or recall to fix this problem. This is a potential safety issue.

20 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

2005 chevy Colorado abs brakes . Abs fault light comes on and brakes start pulse then get hand to push down on an the truck is hard to stop very fast. There seem to be a lot of chevy Colorados and GMC cayons that have this going on in years 2004 through 2007 this is a very serious problem and some one is going to get killed if it has not already happened . Gm needs to recall all these pickup and fix them . Also the wheel hub that the abs sensor connects to also has to be replace . 22 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

The abs light comes on at very low speeds. The abs activates when driving on dry roads. When braking, the pedal vibrates and pushes back on my foot, while making a springing noise. I have come close to crashing numerous times because of the abs activating and the lack of braking when the abs activates. The cost of the repair is upward of $1000 per wheel and the code is indicating both front wheels. I was told by a mechanic that the issue is common, but gm refuses to issue recall. I have read hundreds of complaints online of other owners having the same issue.

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

After driving vehilce a short distance from the house, the abs system activated as if on a slick surface as I braked to stop at stop sign. I eventually had to press extremely hard on brake pedal to stop my vehicle before stop sign. The trucks abs fault light immediately showed up on the dash along with the abs light. 27 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

Having issues with: abs braking fault on 2006 4x4 Colorado crew cab. Having vibration in brake pedal and feel as if brakes are not being applied enough to stop in an emergency. Abs fault light on dash goes off after restart of engine and all is okay until I don't know when! I've read where people are being charged in the thousands to repair this and are still having these same problems.

28 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

On multiple occasions, the abs fault light comes on. This is just one of many problems focused around the brakes. Abs fault light is still on, my brake pedal action is soft. Brakes have been replaced. The right front outer brake pad was stuck and wore down to the metal. All the other front brake pads had good wear on them except for the front outer pad. Something is not right with the brake system on these trucks. I've checked a number of web sites and this brake problem is occurring with many trucks and many owners in many stated. I've even read the same complaints posted through the NHTSA . For the same brake problems please do something before someone is killed.

29 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/25/2009

Have a 2006 chevy Colorado I am the only owner and at about 30,000 miles the abs fault light started to come on and off . Took to dealer and they could not find anything wrong. At 37,000 miles light stays on and brakeing feels interupted at times . Took back to dealer and they said that whole hub needed replaced on the left side at a cost of nearly $700. 00 and that the right side would probably need replaced soon to. I am 77 years old and the cost of the truck was $33,000 . I have been into the forums for this truck and there are hundreds of same complaints . Should this not be a reason for a gm recall ? thanks gm I have been a loyal gm purchaser for 58 years.

30 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 04/25/2009

Purchased 2005 Colorado with 33,000 vehicle may 2008. Less than a year later the abs light came on with the abs light flashing on dic. There are other complaints on file with NHTSA about this very same problem but still no recall, some resulting in crashes. Spoke with Chevrolet yesterday but they are not willing to do anything about it. I guess there has to be more crashes or some deaths to get a recall on this dangerous situation! there is now 49,000 miles on it.

31 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

Abs fault light comes on. The abs sensor seems to malfunction causing the abs brakes to pulsate and then fault. This is a known problem on the edmonds forum, but the manufacture has not been any help. I have had both rotors and the abs sensors replaced twice. The error does not occur all the time. To stop the error, you must pull over, turn the car off and restart the car. The vehicle has had the problem for the last 15,000 miles. I have been told that this is not a safety problem. I have seen reports on the edmonds site of the back brakes freezing and causing accidents. However, it has been reported the chevorlet does not believe it is a big enough problem for a recall. I think that given their is a bulletin board with many chevorlet Colorado owners looking for help that shows it is a problem.

32 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

No crashes or injuries yet. My complaint is about the abs wheel sensor on my 2004 Chevrolet Colorado 4x4 LS z71. It is not functioning correctly. After I start the truck the abs light will come on with a tone plus a message in the d. I. C. "abs fault". I have discussed this problem with my local Chevrolet dealer. They have informed me that my abs wheel sensor is not working properly. As far as I can tell that means that my abs brakes (safety feature) is not working. My truck is up for inspection in February 2009. I'm pretty sure that it will not pass because of this problem. My truck has less then 44,000 miles as of today. I asked my local dealer on a rough estimate on fixing the problem. They informed me that it would be in the $700-$800 range. Yes, my warranty is up. But I feel that this problem is more of a safety issue. The abs is a safety feature on all newer vehicles today. I could not purchase this truck without this feature. Therefore sense I did not have the option to purchase the truck without abs. I feel that general motors should take responsibility to fix the problem.

The abs is a part of the hub and sensor, and must be replaced as one unit.
