This can occur and has occurred both when stopping and while in motion.

41 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2019

I purchase this vehicle in 2015, from rick hendrick Chevrolet in norfolk, va. Less than one year, I brought my vehicle in for service because the oil was burning at a high rate. I had to put oil in my car every 700 miles. The dealership told me that the car was ok and just keep putting oil in the vehicle. I continue to take my vehicle in for normal maintenance oil changes etc. In may 2019, would not start and I had the car towed to the dealership and was told that the engine cylinder piston rings were bad and that I needed a new engine at a cost fo $5700. 00. In January 2020, I received a letter from GMC regarding a class action settlement and claim form. In the letter it stated that GMC was extending warranty however. I called GMC and was told my car didn't meet the parameters. The dealership or GMC will not honor their agreement based on some loop hole. See the documentations.

42 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

Original owner of vehicle. Burns through full oil constantly while driving. Have to carry oil in car and check often. There is currently class action lawsuit over this issue as it is happening way to many cars for it to be a coincidence. Our other 2013 chevy malibu also is having this problem and ruined the engine before car loan was even paid off. This issue could cause the engine to stall while driving.

43 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2019

I have a 2013 chevy Equinox, 2. 4l with a huge oil consumption problem. My engine light is on, and the vehicle stall intermittently if I'm sitting at a stop light, and I often have challenges starting it back up. 45 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2019

I have a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox that has 58000 miles now with the 2. 4l engine. I took it to the local Chevrolet dealer and they told me it was low on oil. They wanted to preform an oil consumption test on the vehicle and stated it was a known issue and gm is covering the repairs if it fails the test. We drove the vehicle 1500 miles as requested and when we took it back it did in fact fail the oil consumption test as it burned more than a quart of oil in the 1500 miles. We were told the engine has worn pistons and piston rings. A 6 year old car that had 56000 on it prior to the oil consumption test has worn pistons and worn rings? we were told we needed a new engine and that gm would put a new engine in it. A little while later we were called back and told our VIN was not included in the extended warranty for the oil consumption. We have spoken with a senior advisor at Chevrolet who stated to us that the car is 6 years old and would not last forever. We then asked to speak to that person's supervisor who told us that gm cannot put vehicle VIN numbers in for recalls and that they work with the NHTSA to do that. I'm not sure if that is true of if gm is trying to pull one over on me. I asked to speak with that persons supervisor and was flat out told no. I understand that many other Chevrolet Equinox's with the 2. 4l engine have this same issue and gm also refuses to acknowledge them either. Since I was told the NHTSA was involved with this I have now notified you. I now have a vehicle that failed gm's own test to determine if a vehicle has a oil consumption problem. Once it failed they said the VIN is not included and they refuse to take care of it and dropped it in nthsa's lap saying you puts VIN numbers in for recalls. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

46 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving 35 mph, the oil consumption levels would lower without warning. The contact had to add oil in the vehicle four times, which resulted in the oil levels staying the same. The vehicle was taken to bill hood Chevrolet (69020 hwy 190 service rd, covington, la 70433, (985)-590-4102) where it was diagnosed that there was abnormal oil consumption levels and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in any recalls. The failure mileage was 136,000.

48 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2019

Yet another person with the 2013 chevy Equinox 2. 4l engine with the excessive oil consumption issue. My wife (who drives this vehicle) called me in tears today, stating that the Equinox started making all kinds of noise, and driving horribly, so she went to a nearby garage, and they discovered that the vehicle had almost no oil - and that this was the 2nd or 3rd Equinox that they had seen in the last 2-3 weeks that came in with almost no oil. This vehicle has 69,075 miles on it, and we are the original owners. All service (other than today's) have been handled at the dealership that we purchased the vehicle from. Very disappointed in gm, after researching this issue, and finding that so many others were having this exact same issue. Gm needs to step up and fix this!!.

52 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

My vehicle stalled at slow speeds. When gas pedal pressed the vehicle would rock back and forth then die. Very dangerous because it happened on the freeway. A year ago my vehicle was part of the oil consumption issues and the pistons and rings were changed. Now the I take camshaft solenoid is affected possibly causing the current issue. I have done research and see that many people have had the same issues with the same vehicles. Why would something like this not be a recall?? it happened last year as well and was told that by changing the pistons and rings that that would solve the problem. Apparently it didnt.

53 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2019

This vehicle is burning oil excessively. For every 1000 miles its burning 2 qts. Of oil. General motors is aware of this issue on other model years but for some reason wont acknowledge it on this one. This vehicle has the same issue as the others.

54 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

There is an issue with excessive oil consumption. It causes the engine to run low on oil at about 30% oil life left, and the engine shudders and shakes. This can cause problems with other parts and cause them to fail as well.

56 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2018

December 18, 2018 I purchased a 2013 Equinox following leasing the vehicle for a year. Over the years it has consumed oil more than expected; however, it now burns approximately 3 qts of oil every 2k miles. I have contacted multiple chevy dealerships in my area and they have all told me I would need to bring the vehicle in for an oil consumption test which I would have to pay for. Any repairs required following the test would also be at my expense. After reading all of the reviews and comments I now believe Chevrolet knew about the problem and is doing nothing about it. I do not plan purchasing a chevy or GMC vehicle again.

57 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2018

600 mile trip for christmas. Car would idle rough at stops and stalled numerous times as starting out. The root cause is excessive oil consumption on this direct fuel injection gm 2. 4 liter engine. Gm has known about this problem and has put out a TSB extending the warranty for 2011-2012 models with this problem, but are making it extremely difficult for consumers to take advantage of this warranty work. The internet car forums are full of consumers complaining about this defect and gm's lack of concern in addressing the issue. I hope it doesn't take someone being killed before the problem is resolved. The engine defect is known to effect a percentage of chevy Equinoxes, gm terrains and several other gm models from the 2010through 2017 model years. Google search chevy Equinox "excessive oil consumption. ".

58 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2018

Just as everyone else has stated, my 2013 Equinox is burning oil and stalls at slow speeds or a stop. I took it to my dealership several times towards the end of my 5 year extended warranty, and they kept "fixing things". The most recent fix was one month after my extended warranty ended, and the repairs were close to $4,000. This repair involved replacing pistons/rings and replacing the timing chain. The very next day following this expensive repair, I drove it to work and it stalled 14 times, due to slowing/stopping of rush-hour. I almost had an accident merging onto the highway, because other drivers assumed I was "moving with the flow" and they don't stop. I immediately called the dealership. . . They have my car now and said they will look at it and "try something else". Over several few months prior to this, they did the oil consumption test, reset the timing chain, and a bunch of other things (it was still under the 5-yr extended warranty then). I asked why there was no recall?, and they told me because none of this was safety-related. How is this not safety issue?! as I mentioned, they currently have my vehicle, and I fear what the repairs will be for another attempt as solving the problem. I feel like the dealership is trying their best, but perhaps their hands are tied. If the NHTSA determines this not to be a safety issue, then it certainly should be considered fraud on behalf of chevy corporation.

59 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2018

My 2013 Chevrolet Equinox started consuming excessive amounts of oil. My car was at the randy reed gm dealership service department and I was advised that there has been a problem with the Equinox reported regarding this issue. I was advised that I would need to have my vehicle undergo an oil consumption test at 1000 and 2000 mile increments before gm would pay for the repair. When I took the car back at the 2000 check, it was discovered that it was using oil. It was 3 quarts low. I was then advised by the service department that only the 2012 Equinox model was covered for this problem. Gm paid for the same repair on the 2012 model but has not issued any special circumstance for the 2013 although they are aware that the problem continues on the 2013 model. The dealership advised that they were having problems getting the parts due to the number of defective parts needing to be replaced. I spoke with gm customer service and was advised although she "sympathized with me" gm would not pay for the repair. It is a known defect in the vehicles but gm is choosing to ignore the other model years. The vehicle will continue to use oil at an excessive rate and is subject to causing the engine to fail or catch fire if the repair is not performed.

60 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2018

My vehicle has been burning oil at an alarming rate - I have to add a quart of oil every few hundred miles, on top of being diligent about changing my oil every 3,000 miles (fully synthetic too). When I do not add a quart of oil every 10 days or so, my car stalls while idling, knocks, and/or rides "rough". I've also noticed the engine idles lower than normal. If I press on the gas lightly, the car will stall. If I press on the gas with more pressure, the car will shift into 2nd gear earlier than normal and roughly (if that makes sense). I've had the car into the mechanic 4 times for same issue.

61 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

Burning oil very badly while driving.

62 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2018

My car is burning oil in between oil changes. I am not aware of it until my car starts to rattle. A mechanic told me that my car has "excessive oil consumption". I have to put 2-4 quarts of oil in my car between oil changes. This is noticeable during the acceleration period. The safety risk is this may destroy my engine costing me thousands of dollars to repair.

63 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2018

I'm having to add oil every week. Going through a quart every 200 to 300 miles. I looked for some kind of recal and no luck. There are a lot of complaints on oil consumption.

64 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2018

I was informed that the oil level was low and that the vehicle is burning oil at a rapid pace during a visit to a Chevrolet dealership this year. They suggested a repair to replace the pistons and rings. Estimated cost of the repair os $3,970. Chevrolet Equinox is know to have problems with excessive oil burning and they even announced a 16118 excessive engine oil consumption notice in 2017. I suspect the problem has carried over to the 2013 model and would like this to be researched. Thanks.

65 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2018

My 2013 chev Equinox began having issue with oil consumption shortly after I bought it used 6-11-16. It was completely out of oil. This involves having them check my oil every 500 miles. They ran me a little over 12,000 miles doing this test not once but twice!!! I was advised by dealer huffman chev frankfort ky that this was an issue with Equinox and to get gm to take care of would have to do oil consumption test. The car ran out of oil several times. Was knocking and not safe to drive but the dealer made me do the test twice and then after my car stopped in the middle of the road and took it in was advised I need new engine. Now gm says my car isn't part of the engine design flaw. . Which they acknowledge there is a design flaw. . . Even though what happened is exactly what they describe as problem. Stopping in the middle of the road was a big deal to me and the knocking and banging when trying to stop when I was going thru "oil consumption" tests was a concern. Everyone now says it is not there problem it is someone else's. There are a lot of complaints against gm for this issue if you look on web. I put may 26 2018 as start but been going on for over year that was the date it stopped in road.

66 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2018

Got oil change at chevy in March 2018, stopped driving April 4 because of maternity leave. Started driving in late may and my car starts dying randomly when idling at stop lights. Then check engine goes on. I call chevy and my warranty was up in late April. I pleed stating I was on maternity and doctor order to not drive. They would not busge. So my husband who is a mechanic checks changes the oil, it's bone dry, as if they had never changed it. Keep in mind I had taken it to a dealership and barely drove the car since. So he flushed the engine with oil a few times to really clean it out, changes the filter, and then fills her up. The codes and all data and replaces the intake and ehaust solenoids. . . Still the check engine light comes on and car dies at idle. We suspect oil excessive consumption broke the timing chain guides, but will not know until he can take apart the engine. Until then I am checking oil weekly and filling oil about every 3 weeks. This oil consumption is absurd. I am filing a complaint with yourlemonlawrights. Com.

67 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

Tl - the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that she noticed every week the oil got low in her vehicle, but she did not see the oil on the engine or the ground. The vehicle was taken to a dealer courtesy motors sales inc (3100 pleasant valley blvd, altoona, PA 16602. 814-942-9000) who diagnosed the vehicle had excessive oil consumption, but the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000. VIN not available. Jc.

68 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2018

Oil consumption timing chain.

69 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2018

My vehicle currently has 117k miles. The rear main seal has failed causing the engine to lose excessive amount of oil. Ultimately, this will end in a $1000 repair. The rear main seal has worn prematurely and should be reviewed as a potential recall. Jerry haag, a gm dealership in hillsboro ohio, stated that this is an issue gm is having with the Chevrolet Equinox. When I contacted gm, they advised that they have no known issues with this part. At this point, I am willing to pay for the repair as I need my vehicle. However, I want this to be noted as a complaint for this part. I have researched this issue online. What I have found is very alarming, gm has significant issues with the Equinox and oil loss from the rear main seal and excessive oil consumption. However, they will not acknowledge this as their issue? I have contacted gm customer service via email and phone. What I get is deflection to my questions and a general lack of concern.
