Had a rough idle was driving fine. Driving home from regular streets to thenhighway and on thebhighway the on board computer said stabilitrac needs service soon, engine peferformance reduced. Tried to get to an off ramp there was a pop under the hood white smoke out the back and the car shut off on the highway. Had it towed to the closest dealer they have informed me it was catastrophic engine failure.

I was driving on the freeway on a very cold morning. All of a sudden I heard a pop sound and my car would not work. I have only 67,000 miles on my car. Oil indicator and screen flashed message to sop car immediately. I was on the freeway and forced to try to get to the berm. I had to get out of the car and walk to the store from the freeway to purchase oil. A new oil change had just been performed 2000 miles before so the car wasn't due for an oil change yet. This car has the ecotec 2. 4 liter engine and is consuming oil at an alarming rate. It consumed 3. 5 quarts within 2000 miles. This could result in sudden engine failure on the freeway or elsewhere.

The engine does not consume oil properly and uses an excessive amount of oil. The car has had regular and on time maintenance and oil changes. There is no warning or notice when the oil is low and this can cause engine failure while driving and I would have not notice. The Chevrolet dealership says they have seen this a lot in these cars. The dealership said the solution is the car needs new pistons a $2,000 repair. The car has only 72,000 miles on it. The car also needs new timing chains and the dealership said they also see this a lot. Another $2,000 repair. The timing chain problem caused the car to shake violently when braking.

Being unable to restart the SUV, it was towed on may 25, 2018 to my mechanic (cb island, 589 union Ave, westbury, NY) to find that there were damaged valves, a broken timing chain, and a blown engine at 93,675 miles. This mileage is well under gm's special coverage adjustment mileage of 120k. The cause of the damage to the motor was lack of oil in the engine. Being diligent in getting oil changes, there was no indication that the oil was low in the car. Gm refused to honor the warranty though they knew of the defect on these engines. There are many almost identical mechanical issues over multiple years for the chevy Equinox. The vehicle has suffered several engine failure since I purchased it. Several sensors and module have gone out, costs of over $1500. 00 to date. The exhaust lifter is collapsed causing nosie and not operating, also heard a lower end knock from rod bearings,suspect loss of oil pressure at one time to be the cause of internal damage.
