On Saturday February 15th 2020 I drove me and my family to columbus ohio from canton. Once in columbus my car stalled at a red light. I tried several times to restart the vehicle before I was able to get off the road and into a parking lot. My car when it worked was making a metal grinding noise. Unable to drive it I had to have it towed back to a garage in canton. Where a mechanic said it was completely out of oil. I never have noticed leaking oil before. The mechanic told me that my model and year of car burn oil really fast. That's when I found out there is a class action lawsuit against gm for this issue. I contacted gm and they told me to go to the nearest dealership for service. I again stalled before parking my car in their lot. The service mechanics at the dealership mentioned my pistons and rings needed replaced and my timing chain was out of sync. They told me my car was unsafe to drive but that chevy wants me to drive 1000 miles before gm can decide whether or not their high oil burn issue is what happened to my car. I have called gm multiple times voice my issue driving an unsafe car with my son who's one today in it. Why would gm insist I drive a car that their own dealership says is unsafe to drive? multiple people at spitzer in north canton have said it to me. Seems like something to investigate .

On December 10th, 2019, as I was driving home from work on interstate 694 in arden hills mn, the engine started making a grinding noise, and then eventually stalled. No warning lights indicating a problem ever came on. I had it towed to the nearest Chevrolet dealersship, and 2 days later was informed by them that the engine had run out of oil, and I would need a new engine that would cost me $8500. After doing some research on the internet, I discovered that excessive oil consumption is a known issue with this motor, the 2. 4l ecotec. There are many complaints about this on the internet. A class action lawsuit filed against gm resulted in a $42 million judgement against gm, but it only covered model years 2010-2013. A 2nd class action lawsuit has been filed against gm to cover model years 2014-2017, this lawsuit is still working it's way through the courts. Gm has refused to repair my vehicle at their expense, even though this is a widely known problem with this engine. . Read more...

In the winter of 2018 after about a year of owning this vehicle, I started having issues with the engine. These ecotec engines are affected by oil consumption problems, gm knew about this and didn't decide to do a recall or anything like that. The engine started to make this growling or grinding noise in the engine, it would stall on me when I came to a stop at a stop sign or stoplight. The engine seized on me when I was beginning to make a left turn at night during a snowstorm. Thankfully there weren't really any others driving on the road during that time. I had to get a new engine dropped in the following month of February in 2019. As time went on and I drove the vehicle with the new engine, as of recently I'm beginning to experience the same symptoms of which I was having before when it first went out. It would jerk when I came to a stop, the engine wound stall out but cut right back on, and it idled/idles roughly. In order to stop the stalling and jerking issue I would have to shift the car into neutral then back into drive so I won't hold up the traffic behind me. This is very unsafe, I never know when the engine could go out as I'm driving. Gm knew about these issues and failed to do proper protocol. This is absolutely unacceptable. And I've noticed I'm not the only affected by these issues.

I changed my oil when there was 5% left on the oil life gauge on 12/17/17. The used oil was black and thick and only 2. 5 qts came out. I put in 5 qts high mileage full synthetic oil and changed the filter. There had been no prior signs that anything had been going wrong and my usual mechanic hadn't told me that he saw anything wrong last oil change. The car started making rough noises, grinding and lurching the week of 1/15/18. I took it into the auto shop 1/22/18 since it started to sound like really rough grinding and started lurching hard while stopped. They told me that I had no oil in any part of the engine. They flushed the engine and did an oil change and said that they didn't see any leakage from anywhere. On 2/2/18, I was at a stop light, my car did a short jerk and made a short grinding sound, but then proceeded to drive fine. While stopped, I would start to smell an oily scent, but it would go away when I started driving again. Roughly 13 miles later, I was driving at approx. 70 mph when my rpm went from hovering above 2 to just above 3 and started deaccelerating. I didn't hear any gear shifting. I put on my hazards and took off cruise control and started for the shoulder of the high way (all without using my brake). The car jerked a few more times before the engine stalled completely. I parked it and turned off the car and went to check my oil level. After taking out the dip stick, I noticed smoke coming out of the opening. I wiped and replaced the dip stick and it came out clean, no oil. I moved to the rear of my vehicle and noticed fresh drips. I dropped down and looked under my car with a flashlight and saw oil everywhere. I got it towed to an auto shop and they informed me that the rear seal was busted and that I would need a whole new engine. My car has 114,465 miles on it.
