6 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/05/2019

I purchased a 2013 chevy Equinox at tom wood Subaru on 5/27/2019 it was free of recalls stated by the car fax. Since I have had the vehicle I have been loosing oil and there is a slight knocking sound. I checked the oil and to my surprise there was no oil nor did I receive a light on my vehicle stating low oil. I immediately went and had someone take me to get oil and had to put 3 liters in my car. I went and had an oil change at hare Chevrolet and 2 weeks after I noticed the sound again and checked my oil and again it showed no oil on the dipstick and no low oil light came on. I contacted hare Chevrolet and they advised me that there was a car brought in last week with the same issues I am calling about and it cost between $1400-3000 to fix. I just paid $60 for an oil change and had to purchase more oil to put in my SUV. I called chevy customer service and told them about the issue and was advised they couldn't help me and I would need to pay out of pocket to get this fixed. I am frustrated because there are 100,000 complaints regarding this same issue and nothing is being done. Obviously with this many cars having the same issue a recall should of been made and still hasnt.

12 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 03/25/2018

Our 2010 chevy Equinox was working fine. Last week we came to a stop at a stop sign. . . Heard a bang noise and it started to idle rough, and shut off at stop sign ( hard to even know. . . Since radio still playing). Also sounds like a thrashing machine. . . . Check engine light came on and has since gone off and back on and back off. What is the best correction for this safety issue. Continues to shut off at stop signs. ????.

13 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/22/2018

In January 2018 I took my 2013 Equinox in to the dealer for an engine knocking noise. I was told the noise was caused by the engine oil being 3 quarts low. The oil was changed and the dealer suggested an oil consumption test. I went back in every 500 to 1,000 miles. I was due for an oil change and took it to the dealer on 6/21/18. The dealer said it was confirmed that the engine was consuming too much oil and that "major heart surgery" for the engine was needed. The piston rings were carboned causing excessive oil consumption. This required piston, connecting rod and bearing replacement. They quoted $2,400 for the repair and said it was out of warranty. I asked if anything could be done and they said they would check. I was called the next day and told they would only cover 30% because I was 281 days out of warranty as of 6/21/18. The issue started 150 days prior in January. The car has only 89,000 miles on it. I did some research and found that this is a very common issue with 2013's. It also appears to be an issue with 2011 and 2012 model years. Why is gm not extending the warranty for 2013's when this is a known issue? I contacted gm directly and was told that 30% off was the best that they can do. The repairs were completed 7/5/18. Gm needs to address the issue with some kind of recall or extend the warranty for this issue so that I can recoup the $1,700 that I paid for this repair.

14 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/16/2018

While driving home from work 1/16/2018 on the interstate, my Equinox started to make a knocking noise. I made my way to the far right lane and it shut down on me as I was pulling to the side of the road. There were no warning lights that came on. I was very cold as I waited for help and did not feel safe as I had the guardrail on one side and cars flying by on the left. A local mechanic gave us a bulletin on the issue and, after calling around to several other mechanics and dealerships, found out of 17 others that had come in after breaking down the same night that I did.

15 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/04/2018

2012 chevy Equinox was making a knocking noise took it to my mechanic. It was out of oil before my oil change was due. I had 1000 miles left before my oil change. This is the second time this has happened within 6 months. Contacted GMC today got s case number but have to wait for it to happen again and take it to a GMC dealer for a diagnostic test. Then today during a snow storm my windshield wipers just stopped working it was a mess trying to get home making frequent stops because of visibility. GMC said there are no recall for that or the oil consumption but I see so many complaints online about all these issues. Not to add the paint in the inside of the car doors and trunk doors are rusting. This is my last GMC car going back to Honda.

19 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/04/2016

I have tried contacting gm multiple times to no avail. I have contacted you all previously to no avail. This is my last hope. I'm going to keep complaining until something is done. My vehicle has an excessive oil consumption issue. It started around 60k miles and has just rolled over the 80k mile mark this week. In the beginning, my vehicle began making this knocking sound so I took it to a local shop to have it checked out. It was completely dry of oil. It was no yet due an oil change and I had had the vehicle for just over a year prior to this. I am now putting a quart of oil in my vehicle per week. I've been told that gm are called years 2010 and 2011 and "some" 2012's unfortunately mine was not one of the "some. " - this is a gm manufacturing issue that needs to be addressed. How is it even remotely possible to issue a recall for some and not all. I've been told that if I pay $2000 to have the issue fixed, someday if there is a recall, I'll be reimbursed. As the mother of a child with multiple medical bills, shelling out $2000 for their crappy manufacting is unacceptable for me and it's totally unacceptable. My next step is better business bureau. Please give me some insight. I'm at the end of my rope. I have to keep oil in my vehicle at all times, and I'm terrified that my engine will blow while I'm out with my son in it.

20 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 05/03/2016

Around the time frame of may, 2016 I began to notice that my 2012 Chevrolet Equinox with a 2. 4l ecotec started having a knocking noise from the engine while idling. The mileage at this point in time was around 99k miles. At the same time that the knocking began, I noticed the check engine light came on. I went to an auto zone to check my oil levels, and realized that the dip stick showed the oil was much lower than it should have been. I went inside and purchased dexos 5w30 oil per the owner's manual and added 1 qt to it. Additionally, I noticed after I took the oil cap off that there was smoke coming from inside. Per the owner's manual, the gm oil life monitor system uses an algorithm that analyzes your driving activity, temperature outside, and several other factors to determine when the oil needs changed. According to this system I was at roughly 70% oil life. The system states that the oil only needs to be changed within 600 miles of the low oil life alert coming on, this doesn't happen until you get around 15%. At this point I began monitoring my oil consumption much more closely and carried oil on me at all times. As time has gone by, I've noticed the car is burning oil quicker, and as of my most recent oil change in February of this year, we began doing oil consumption tests per gm TSB # 13-06-01-003h that explains this issue. The TSB notes that it covers my make and model, but my VIN does not come up as being covered up to 120k miles for this repair. I have had a dealer tell me that the fix listed in the TSB is what needs to be done, but that it will cost $3. 4k. Many other models with the same engine are covered but mine isn't. My car has since started stalling when it is idling at low rpm's, specifically on 3/22/17 it stalled twice while in a drive-through. Current mileage today is 118. 6k and the 2 oil consumption tests show burning up to 1 qt per 1k miles.

21 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/13/2016

My 2011 Equinox had a loud banging sound in the engine. The oil was changed at 104k and is now at 109k. Car broke down in driveway. I had it towed to the dealership where they could find a leak or burning of oil. They stated that there was not one drop of oil left and the timing chain and guides were ruined. The dealership blamed jiffy lube by saying they did not put sufficient oil in the car; and jiffy lube blamed Chevrolet stating they know they have engine issues in this model (the cars "eat" oil) the dealership said that corporate headquarters want to open the motor up for 2k to see if it is a defect in the model. I am not willing to pay this. Two years ago they had to rebuild the cylinder head because of a manufacturers defect.

25 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/05/2013

My check engine light came on. I brought my car to an autoparts store to get the code. Upon running the code it was discovered the oil was low in the car. The mechanic put it in 3 quarts of oil. I had my oil changed in October and had just put 3000 miles on the car. The next day the check engine light came on again and the car was 1 quart of oil low. I called the chevy dealer and gave them the code p00014. They said it was my camshaft and to bring it in for warranty work. Upon drop off they said they could smell oil burning and heard a knocking in the engine. They said the oil in my car was very black/dirty and low when they received it. They told me to make sure I change my oil regularly and not follow the "oil life" light in the car. They did an oil change and said the car was running fine. I was informed to keep an eye on the oil so they could do a conumption test. A week later the same check engine code came on in my car. I brought it back to the dealership. They replaced chains and accuators in the engine. I got my car back, watched the oil and drove 1000 miles. At that point my car was 1. 3 quarts of oil low. The dealership documented it and sent me on. I drove 700 miles and was 3/4 a quart of oil low. It also had that knocking noise in the engine again. The dealership took my car back and called gm. They were told took look for markings in the engine. They ended up replacing my entire engine and the fuel pump system due to the markings they found. Gm said these problems were linked to issues in engines with these marks. My situation has been fixed for now but I wanted to make my problem known for others who have not had it fixed.
