36 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/23/2018

My timing chain was making noise. Since other models of the Equinox have a bulletin that covers that repair I drove it into the dealership. On the way there my engine exploded while driving up a hill at 40mph, cracking the engine block and exhaust manifold. Engine needs replacement. Gm will not cover the repair. Issue was reported to gm. It is at the dealership for repair, working off an estimate. I will add the final invoice later.

37 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/27/2018

The 2013 chevy Equinox burns so much oil in between oil changes that I am constantly dumping oil in. Chevy will not include my year in any service bulletins, making me responsible for repairs that may or may not work and buying oil every week. Also, the oil consumption problem is ruining the engine, leading to a crack in the exhaust manifold, which allows exhaust fumes to leak into the cabin. Especially if I use the heat or air conditioning, the windows have to be cracked for fear that I would gas myself to death.

38 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/23/2018

Tl-the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the service engine and the stability warning light was illuminated. Additionally, while driving at unknown speeds the accelerator pedal was applied but failed to respond and went to the floor and the vehicle loss power. The vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic where informed that there was carbon build up within the air port and exhaust manifold and a higher grade of gas was needed. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and opened case number 8-4115305233 and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 114,000. Ap.

39 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 03/15/2018

Wiper blade motor stopped working in a heavy downpour. I was on a road I know so was able to pull off safely. If I didn't know this road I am positive I would have had an accident. The manifold was changed in 2013. Today is March 22, 2018. Last week I had the manifold changed again. Cracked again. There were fumes coming into the passenger area. The car is in the repair garage again because the fumes are even worse. The car has always had a loud ticking sound. It uses a lot of oil. I complained to the dealer before the warranty ran out. They did an oil consumption test and said the oil use was within normal range. How can this be normal range when I put a couple quarts of oil every 200 miles. This car is junk.

40 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 02/17/2018

I just had to replace the exhaust manifold for the second time in 2 years on my 2011 chevy Equinox due to very large cracks. The car has around 90,000 miles on it and I realoze it's 7 years old, but I tale pretty good care of it and get regular maintence usually at an actual chevy dealership. The first time I expressed my suprise to the mechanic when he yold me there was a very large crack in the exhaust manifold. His response was that chevy Equinoxes are widely known to go through manifolds quickly and frequently, again this was at an actual chevy service station at a chevy dealership. The second time less than 2 years later when the check engine light came on again I took my vehicle to th aaa certified care care center and again same thing, manifold large crack must be replaced and aaa tech told me same story, chevy Equinox manifold are widely known not to last. Only this time in addition to the manifold, the cracked manifold had somehow caused damage to the catalytic converter which is now broken and must be replaced. So my question is, if these are widely known defects among 2010-2011 chevy Equinoxes, why hasnt chevy issued recalls for manifolds and caralytic converters?.

41 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/30/2018

Excessive oil consumption recall for new pistons and rings received one month after purchase. Day after picking up my vehicle, my check engine light turned on. Dealership told me that the camshaft intake solenoid was throwing a code and needed to be replaced but it had nothing to do with where they working, I paid out of pocket. Next day, check engine light came back on however, this time the traction control light came on as well and the engine power reduced warning came on the display screen and I couldn't drive over 20 mph the whole way home (twenty miles) with my two small children with me mind you. Replaced the camshaft intake solenoid only to not fix the issue so we also replaced the camshaft position sensor to find that didn't help at all. Ended up having to have my vehicle towed back to dealership (40 miles) as it was undriveable. Dealership said that the fuel rail pressure sensor needed to be replaced as the vehicle was dumping fuel into the cylinders. Had the dealership fix the issue and I paid them for parts and lanor, all while dealership denying fault. Picked it up after being "fixed", yet again, next day check engine light cones on again! dealership looked at again and told me that the camshaft exhaust solenoid, replaced that and my check engine light popped on again days later but my vehicle also stalled out on me while pulling out of a parking lot and again while stopped in the middle of a two lane highway with kids in the car. I then reached out to gm personally and they were extremely rude and denied fault. One month later, had to replace my exhaust manifold as it was cracked and releasing exhaust fumes into the cab with me and my children getting headaches while driving. Replaced upstream O2 sensor. . Not even one week after this was fixed, Jan 2018 my check engine light is back on again with a p0420 code for the cat converter. . . .

42 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/11/2018

When I went out to start my vehicle, it hesitantly started, but when I put it into gear and drove a little ways , it stalled out of nowhere. When I tried to start it up again it wouldn't turn over completely and this stabilitrak warning came up. I had it towed to local auto shop where they told me that some gear in the engine was completely broken and that I needed to replace the whole engine. I keep up with my oil changes and have had no warning as to any problems that could have led up to this. The more I read about this vehicle , the more complaints I see about the same issues I've been having along the way: ie windshield wiper breaking, exhaust manifold replacement and catylitic converter, and overall power train and engine problems. It's not a coincidence that multiple people are having the same problems with these chevy products, and in the name of safety , this company needs to step up and repair or replace these horribly and incompetently made parts. It's absolutely unacceptable that I have a less than 5 year old car that is good for no more than a paper weight right now. We the consumer buy chevy products for dependability , not to constantly have to fix it, and shell out even more money to ensure our safety. And don't tell me (chevy rep) when I call and complain , that it is my fault, because the only fault I see I've made is buying your pos car!!!.

43 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/26/2017

My vehicle was burning excessive amounts of oil. I took it in because it was running poorly, they discovered it was 3 quarts low on oil, and then had me track my oil consumption (by checking the oil once a week for 2,000 miles). Chevrolet had a recall for this issue (only if your car was experiencing this) and luckily it was covered to be fixed. However, because of the excessive oil consumption, I have had other issues and problems with my car. All during the same time period, my manifold cracked and I need a new catalytic converter. I definitely think (and the service advisor agreed) that the reason that my emissions system is running inefficiently, is because my engine was burning so much oil. All of the oil soot and fumes run through the engine and emission system, therefore clogging up my catalytic converter. Seems to me, that the catalytic converter should be covered under the oil consumption recall. I can understand if it were on a case to case basis (just like the oil consumption recall is), but it should be replaced if your car is experiencing those issues. All stemming back to the oil consumption.

44 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/19/2017

I made an appointment 2013 Equinox into the dealer because I was smelling strong exhaust smell in the cab. As soon as I talked to the mechanic he told me it was most likely a cracked exhaust manifold and that it is happening frequently in the Equinox models. Then 2 days before my appointment to get my car looked at my check engine like turned on so I parked it and didn't drive it until it was time to take it to the dealership. When I got there I let them know that the light had just came on. After inspecting my car they found that the exhaust camshaft actuator solenoid was out of spec. The removed it and replaced it and found a lot of metal shavings on the actuator. R/r intake solenoid and and cleaned more metal shavings off of that. They checked the oil and there was no oil on the dipstick, car is not leaking oil and has been regularly maintained. The service manager at the dealership came out and talked with us and said that we need a full engine rebuild because these cars will start to use oil and the timing chain wears the guide out at then the chain gets worn out and it ruins the entire engine. There was no indicators of issues until the engine is shot. The dealership and gm said that there is a special program for 2010 - 2012 euqinox to fix this problem but because mine is a year newer (2013) that my vehicle doesn't qualify. Not only is the engine totally shot after 117,000 miles and 4 years but the exhaust manifold is cracked right at the the fresh air intake and so it sucks exhaust right into the cab of the vehicle when the heat is running. It is so strong that the windows have to be rolled down to drive it. Not safe!!! super dangerous to be filling the cab with carbon monoxide! not to mention the engine is totally shot due to a designe flaw and could break down on the side of the road at anytime.

45 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 09/29/2017

My 2011 Equinox has experienced multiple problems since we purchased it beginning with the oil life monitoring system, which gm acknowledged, through a dangerous failure of the stabilitrak system in 2014 while in motion on multiple occasions (posted to nhsta), resulting in an engine rebuild in 2016, which gm took responsibility for. Unfortunately, the initial problems occurred beyond the lemon car limit in our state and continue today. In September 2017 I brought the vehicle to a chevy dealer after noticing significant exhaust fumes in the cabin particularly while stationary during start up. It was diagnosed with a cracked manifold. The manifold had already been replaced in January of 2016 as part of an engine rebuild at gm's expense. This would therefore be the third manifold in this vehicle in only six years. Both the dealer and I filed with gm customer care to request coverage for the manifold replacement. I have not yet heard back but remain hopeful that gm will once again step up and take responsibility.

46 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving with the air conditioning activated, fumes entered the vehicle. Additionally, there was an abnormal knocking noise present. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the manifold was cracked. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified and did not offer assistance. The failure mileage was 67,382.

47 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 02/13/2017

Exhaust manifold develops chronic crack possibly due to thermal stress gradient near a injection port. Another contributing factor the manifold cracking may be that the engine mount, according to the repair technicians, are prone to quick deterioration than what they consider normal. The engine flops around during torque reactions, putting stress on the connected exhaust system. Besides the cracked manifold, two engine mounts were found in poor condition. This crack does not produce a significant audible exhaust leak sound and therefore goes unnoticed. The exhaust manifold is also hidden from view. The crack is widest when cold, therefore letting the most toxic carbon monoxide concentration enter the vehicle, resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning of the occupants. This is my wife's car. She had been experiencing severe headaches and had made a doctors appoint. I suspected that our wood stove or gas range may have been the culprit, and installed a CO monitor in the kitchen. We figured it was either CO poisoning or a terminal brain tumor. We identified the symptom but not the cause. We thank the NHTSA for their recall of the Equinox fuel pump. It was during this recall that the gm technician identified the cracked exhaust manifold. So the fuel pump recall essentially saved my wife from ongoing low level CO poisoning. Regards. 48 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/10/2017

Car had an oil change and new tires put on at belle tire in grand blanc mi. Three days later my daughter (rachelle sly) was at a red light and the car just stopped. Being close to a midas muffler she managed to get it to restart and go there (less than 500 feet). They put the car up in the air and said there was oil all over the bottom of the car. We decided to have it towed back to belle tire since they changed the oil originally. They said it had to be towed to al serra grand blanc mi. By that time the car wouldn't even start. . Al serra originally said it was a bad rear seal. Everything escalated to needing a full new engine. There was a bulletin (no. 14882) on the 2012 Equinox ltz but when we put her VIN in it did not come up. She had approx 140,000 miles at the time of this incident but had a previous complaint when she was within the required mileage of 120,000 or 10 years per the bulletin no:14882. At that time it was documented of the very complaints. It is cold in mi at this time which is mentioned in the bulletin. At the time of her first complaint al serra changed the catalytic converter which seemed to help. She purchased the car from al serra in June 2015 and the nothing was sent to her or disclosed to her. Bulletin came out in March of 2015 (three months earlier/prior) she drives a long way to and fro work but does not hot rod this vehicle . She gets all maintenance/oil changes etc. It is dangerous that this condition was not brought to her attention, if you google the condition it is a well documented problem that gm should fix and or notify people of, now in addition to spending over $20,000. 00 0n this car it cost $5,444. 00 to get a new engine!.

49 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 09/17/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving approximately 25 mph, smoke emitted into the vehicle from the exhaust manifold through the ventilation system. The check engine warning indicator illuminated. As a result, the contact became extremely sick and lightheaded and was concerned a crash would occur. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician stated that the exhaust manifold was fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage and VIN were unknown.

50 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

After coming to a stop at a light, car completely died. Nothing would work. Had to be towed back to dealer. Was sent to a certified gm service center and the timing chain had broke and caused chaos in my engine. They replaced the chain as well as the head and other numerous parts. They also found that my manifold was cracked and had to be replaced. Out quite a bit of money. Now just a few months later, driving down the road and my engine is clicking and ticking and sounds like its going to fall out. I check the oil when I get stopped and my car has no oil in it. No warning lights had come on and my oil level monitoring system still said 38%. It had just reached 3000 miles since my last oil change. Not a happy customer. Tired of dropping money in this vehicle. Also now when I get in my air conditioner make a loud noise until I turn it off and back on.

51 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 05/02/2016

Bought used and then started noticing oil disappearing. Took to dealer, oil consumption test done, dealer says normal use. No help from the dealer at all. Consumption got worse, went from 2 quarts to 4 quarts between oil changes. In the meantime had to replace catalytic converter and a cracked exhaust manifold and now have a check engine light indicating O2 sensor problem, gas mileage dropping too. After researching, these problems seem to be caused by the oil use issue. Engine probably needs new rings and pistons($2500 at the dealer) but other internal damage may be present so cost may be even more. I found on the internet that gm had extended warranty for this issue but only up to 7 yrs or 120k miles. So, I am out of luck and dealer did not mention this as this started while still under 120k miles. Consulted a honest mechanic friend and he says it would be cheaper to replace the engine. He quoted $1800 for engine and labor, turn key job, with a one year warranty on everything. I trust him. Only choice is to replace engine or get rid of the car.

52 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 02/20/2016

Exhaust manifold crack which is a recurring failure. Will be replacing the manifold for the 4th time that should never fail. Photo attached from one of the failures. Exhaust fumes enter the cabin of the vehicle.

53 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/21/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that exhaust fumes entered the vehicle through the ac vents. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the vehicle's exhaust manifold was fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

54 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/31/2015

This car has been burning oil and I have had on three separate occasions in the past few months experienced the car stalling, or near stalling while driving or sitting idling in traffic at traffic light or stop sign. I have complained to the dealer and an independent mechanic both of which told me I hardly had any oil in the engine when checked. (I change my oil as recommended my car is maintained as it should be) my most recent experience was the most dangerous, I remote started my car on 1/31/15, I came outside to get in it and I could smell oil burning, the inside cabin smelled of burning oil/ fire like smell. I witnessed smoke coming from under the car at junction of pipe coming from engine area and muffler. I had my father come and check the car out with engine off my father popped the hood and when pulling the dipstick out to check the oil, the oil shot 2-3 feet in the air onto him and down the driver side wheel well of the car. My father could have been severely burned or had eye damage had in been any closer or standing on side of car when checking. I took the car to the dealership on 2/2/15 I told them what happened they kept the car and checked it, I got a call the same day telling me that the car had to have the pistons, valve cover and time and chain replaced, all covered by my power train warranty (thank god). I feel compelled to tell you this b/c it is very dangerous both for those driving and anyone on the road. I have read numerous complaints about this engine (4cyl) and it seems nothing is being done. I believe Chevrolet should have a massive recall, because obviously something is very wrong! I do believe this has been part of another problem that have complained about early on when I first purchased the car it would, and continues to decelerate while driving, completely on its own and very randomly. This is an obvious safety concern.

55 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

I am losing a lot of oil within the 3000 miles before I change it. My car is losing power it stalls it runs very loudly and it knocks a little. I put at least 12 quarts of oil every 3000 miles and it's not leaking because I checked the top and the bottom of the motor and there is no sign of oil anywhere not even out of my tail pipe.

56 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 05/16/2013

Bought a new 2005. 2 months after warranty went out the ignition messed. Have to wiggle the key to get it to turn. Two months later the heat/ac blower control switch went out. At 120,000 miles leaking lower intake manifold gasket, fixed that. 3 months later blown head gasket, found bad fuel injector while fixing that. 6 days after all that was fixed the pcm/ecm went out, still at shop as I type. Wonder what is next. I have always owned gm products, but I believe this is my last one. I have been told by two mechanics that the bearing in motor will now go bad since water got in oil twice from leaking gaskets. 3 mechanics told me this motor is known for blown head gaskets and leaking lowing intake manifold gaskets. Online there is talk of a recall on the pcm/ecm but dealership says no recall.

The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who flushed the heater core, performed a pressure test, replaced the cylinders, intake manifold gasket set, oil filter, head gasket, exhaust manifold, distributor o-rings, head volt set, and the antifreeze. The contact did not inform the manufacturer. The current and failure mileages were 55,075. Updated 02/23/lj updated 05/20/11.

59 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/08/2010

1) fairly new chevy Equinox (2006) with $65,000 miles overheated in traffic without warning - within a day, difficulty starting vehicle and white smoke came out of the tail pipe when starting the car in the morning - car showed no symptoms until problem occurred 2) car overheats and stalls out as a result - per the mechanic, it has blown head gaskets 3) head gaskets replaced at $2,800 - the car isn't even four years old after researching more about the problem to see if my cost of repair was within the average for such repairs, I saw that many owners have had the same problem with the chevy Equinox, and that it is likely a faulty design issue.

60 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/07/2007

Auto was at rest at a stop light just after exiting expressway. Auto seemed to lose power when the engine light came on and the temp gauge was reading hot. I slowly drove about a mile home. At this time I turn off the auto and opened the hood. I let it sit turned off for about an hour, at that time I tried to start the auto and it wouldn't turn over. I let it sit overnight and tried to start next morning, it turned over hard and started. I turned it off, checked the coolant it was very low. I added coolant, let it run about 10min, lots of steam come from tail pipe and no heat from vents. I then checked engine oil, it seemed watered down. A friend who knows cars told me head gasket. My 3year old chevy now needs at least $1500 to $2000 worth of repairs that may not be under warranty.
