2 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 05/04/2020

I purchased a 2012 Equinox on 6/22/2019. After several months I noticed my oil consumption was a possible issue. After having it diagnosed at our gm dealer I need to have the oil issue repaired. I replaced pistons, rings, timing chain, water pump, and spent $3532. 13. I missed a recall by just a few weeks. This is very disappointing as this is now my 3rd but possibly my last Equinox. I want gm to honor this . Ii purchased this SUV on 6/22/2019.

3 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 05/14/2019

Vehicle shakes when driving, especially on highway, sluggish to accelerate, making highway driving fearful. Vehicle also is rough at idle, with possible dying of engine at stop lights. 8 repairs since July, 2017 - all relative to same issue - camshaft/exhaust. This current repairs has been for the balancing shaft/water pump chain, tensioner and gaskets, seals, etc. I have done a timeline of issues/repairs to try to take on gm. Good luck I realize. From the 7 dealership trips in the last year they appear to all have been related to the initial damage to the exhaust/camshaft repairs as each and every time since then, either the exhaust of the camshaft has been repaired in one way or another. The initial issue was sluggish acceleration, engine light on. Repaired exhaust and intake camshaft actuators. Then the alternator/belt went out (not counted in the 7 - had repaired elsewhere). I didn't know they failed from oil all over them until they started to fail again and looked under hood and saw oil all over the thing. Took to dealership where they replaced r+r seal, pulley, belt and balancer. Since then we have had the balancer 2x, timing chain 3x, tensioner 3x.

4 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 03/15/2019

I got my 2010 chevy Equinox on January 4, 2019. Ever since the second week, I've had it I've been having trouble with it at first I thought it just because I needed a tune up and oil change after I got those the problem continued. So around the end of February, I put the SUV in the shop they said it was the water pump/balance shaft chain the entire thing cost $669. 49. I was very excited to get my SUV back on March 15, 2019, just in time for me to go to out of town just to find out the car is making the same noise and doing the same rough riding. I took the car back in the shop for a diagnostic in April they said that they had a lot of vehicles with the same and to file a complaint. I put the car down since then and it's just sitting under garage taking my money. The car also cut off on me multiple times the latest time it happened to me, I was driving down the street and I couldn't accelerate and it just cut off and I had to put on hazards and I almost got hit.

6 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/07/2017

Timing chain, water pump, tensioner all went bad, causing further internal problems. Came to a stop and would not re-start. Chevrolet required an "authorized" diagnosis. Chevrolet had previously extended warranties on this motor to 120,000 miles due to this problem. I had 124,600, so Chevrolet refused to help. Cost me over $2400 and the car still won't run. Per internet searches, this is a very common problem for the 4-cyl eco tech engine. (I believe canada required a recall on this engine!).

8 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 05/20/2017

Hello, the vehicle is under 60,000 miles. I received a recall notice for the malfunction light. After diagnosis, it was reported the car burned oil and caused oil sludge. Many reports are needed to be replaced, including the pistons and rings. The cost of the job is between $4500 - 6000. Gm will not repair the car under the bulletin, 15285c. Apparently, the car VIN is covered; however, gm will not repair because I can't proof changing oil every 5,000 miles. I do have service provider receipts dating back to 2012. I couldn't proof changing the oil myself. I have completed this tasks in addition to the service shop. Gm reported the car to burn oil excessively at 2,000 miles. I wasn't aware of this until 2016, five years after time of purchase. I'm disappointed with gm not backing their product. The car has the following issues due to this recall. -lunges at idle -stops at idle -sounds like a ticking time bomb I have already invested $1200 in the engine fixing the timing chain and water pump. Attached is a conversation saved with gm support. Thanks, chad.

10 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/19/2016

Purchased vehicle used with 64000 miles Aug 24th, 2015. After about 2 weeks the car stalled while backing out of a parking spot. Re-started it and it stalled again. Happened again in late sept, once in oct and again in Nov. Dealer replaced faulty intake solenoid 11-13-15. Leaving for work on Jan 19th and noticed oil leak (no low oil light). Drove straight to dealership. 1/4 mile out my engine light comes on saying reduced engine power, drops me to 30 mph. Get to dealership and it's a blown rear seal. Replaced loose timing and balance shaft chain, water pump, coolant flush ( I paid for) abs light came on, so sensor was found to be "open" also found chunk of magnet missing from wheel bearing. Car in shop for 9 days. Picked up on 1-28-16. Stalled again 4 x on 2-4-16. Returned to dealership to have camshaft actuator replaced. Stalled again 2-7-16 and 2-8-16. Returned to dealership on 2-8-16. No word from them yet. The car has left me in the middle of an intersection turning left twice!! I could be killed by driving this vehicle. I have researched online and have found 1000's of people dealing with this same issue. Several have had the vehicle stall while traveling 70 mph on the freeway!! the issues exists on 2010, 2011 and 2012 models. Gm needs to take responsibility for the issue that no one seems to know how to fix. Does someone have to die before gm will deal with this issue?? these vehicles are also known for burning excessive amounts of oil. When I took it in for an oil change, they noted it was a quart low. Still no low oil light ever came on. One article I read said the issue is caused by a coating that was sprayed inside the camshaft during production is now leaking into the fuel/oil causing metal fragments and dirt to be in the oil.

11 Water Pump problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/19/2014

Equinox overheated. We immediately replaced the thermostat and water pump. Did not fix the problem. The Equinox is currently in the shop, the tests showed the Equinox has two cracked heads.

12 Water Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 11/10/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while traveling 35 mph, the head gaskets blew on the vehicle. The failure occurred and the vehicle overheated and stalled. The contact stated that the water pump had been changed prior to the failure, but did not correct the problem. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and it was determined that the head gaskets failed. The failure mileage was 115,000.

13 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/15/2014

Initially the issue started with rough idling of the car, engine ticking, and engine stalling. After indicating this to the dealership, they informed me that the ecm needed to be reprogrammed because the oil life indicator was not properly calibrated causing the system to think that there was more life on the oil than there actually was. The engine balance chain eventually broke while on the interstate (55 mph), due to improper oil lubrication. The fuel pump, water pump, and a few other items had to be replaced due to the damage caused when the chain broke. I notified the dealership once again after engine ticking/ rough idling re-occured and they indicated to me that the engine ticking during startup was normal. The engine ticking progressed to becoming a constant noise. I noticed that when I took the oil in for an oil change, approximately 2000 miles in, that the oil dipstick would come up completely dry. This indicated the vehicle was experiencing an excessive amount of oil consumption. I took the vehicle to the dealership who indicated that pistons had to be replaced and the exhaust manifold was cracked. This indicated that the engine was observing some excessive amount of heat most likely due to the oil consumption issue. During these issues, no service engine light ever came on. The car had to be taken back to the dealership after the service engine light came on which indicated that the cam shaft actuator solenoids and catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The catalytic converter most likely failed due oil seeping into the exhaust which coated the ceramic substrate & the excessive heat experienced by the engine (as indicated by the cracked manifold) damaged the ceramic substrate. Oil consumption leads to excessive heat from the engine which can be a fire hazard. Engine stalling due to oil consumption leads to crash safety issues.

14 Water Pump problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/15/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the water pump failed. The water pump was repaired but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to an authorized dealer, who then advised that the head gasket would need replacing. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

15 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/01/2012

Purchased 4/2010 1 at a red light, car idled really rough, then all of the dash lights came on. I drove straight to the dealership. They checked it out and said I needed a new fuel pump. I had about 47,000 miles. 2. Oil consumption - the first time this happened I was hearing a funny noise when I turned left coming from the engine. My boyfriend checked the oil the next morning to find no oil on the dipstick. We put in 2 qts then when the dealer ship opened I took it in. They told me they could not find any internal or external leaks so bring in weekly for oil consumption test (I was about 1500 miles since my oil change that was done at the same time the fuel pump was replaced) drove out of town to visit family (about 2000 miles after oil change) after driving 200 miles heard the noise again checked the oil. . . . . . . 2 qts low. Added oil and took to local dealership. No problems found related to oil, but did find another alert that needed to be completed when I got home related to the water pump tensioner. Gm customer service again , but only was told to wait until my next scheduled oil change and start consumption tests again. 3. I pod jack - worked fine for the first 2 years, but then would cause all center console lights to go out, could not operate radio or a/c. 4. Stalling - I have only had this problem once but it was as I was turning left across 3 lanes of traffic! 5. Jerky transmission - the first time this issue happened it jerked so hard I thought I hit something. Took it to the dealership and was told, like others it was the transmission "learning" me. The transmission codes were updated and problem only occurs occasionally 6. Drivers seat lumbar support airbladder - has popped and had to be replaced two times.

16 Water Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/02/2011

This vehicle in to a gm shop multiple times for heating issues. The first time the thermostat was replaced. A year later in the fall, the vehicle was again not blowing hot air. Took it back to gm and they flushed the system. About 2 months later, it was brought back in because the heat was not blowing again. For the 2nd time they replaced the thermostat. Following year, wouldn't blow hot air again, they flushed the system 3 times and finally got the heat working again. Fast forward to fall 2010. Same problem, not blowing heat only this time the vehicle was out of warranty. Gm diagnosed a cracked head gasket and a leaky water pump and wouldn't cover any of the so called problems. The first 3-4 times that the car was in to be worked on it had the same "symptoms" 1. When the heat was working and I slowed to stop - it would start blowing cool air, but as soon as I accelerated, the warm air returned. 2. If I turned the fan knob past the 2nd tick, it would start blowing cold air. In 2010, started with the above symptoms and only to have the heat go out completely. Gm won't have anything to do with it. This go around diagnosed a cracked head gasket and a leaky water pump and wouldn't help pay to fix because it was a "new" diagnosis outside of warranty. Funny how each time it was in previously, the exact same symptoms are document in their system and no cracked head gasket or leaky water pump was the cause. They're skirting by on an underlying issue and aren't warranting their product! we've since taken it to two separate mechanics and they've both told us the issue isn't caused by a cracked head gasket or leaky water pump. We've again replaced the thermostat only to have the heat go out on our 3 hour car ride home from the holiday with a baby in the car-nice gm you are a joke. I've always owned a gm product but after being swept under the rug, I will never buy one again!.

17 Water Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/06/2010

Check engine light came on after over heating occurred. Replaced the thermostat, water pump and then found out their was a blown head gasket. Now I need to place a new motor in a 2005 Equinox with only 113000 miles!.

18 Water Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/11/2010

My 2005 chevy Equinox started overheating this winter. Immediately took it to my mechanic who diagnosed a broken water pump. A few months passed with no issue then it started overheating again. I took it to the mechanic who informed me that the head gasket needed replacement. I've gone on multiple sites that report the same issue with their chevy Equinox. Although, no one was hurt in my situation, the repeated occurrence of this happening with other Equinox owners is puzzling and should be investigated at the least. In my situation I was on the highway when the car slowed down from 60 mph to under 40 mph. Luckily there weren't a lot of drivers on the road and I was able to pull all the way over across traffic. . This vehicle is not safe and chevy has even logged this faulty head gasket issue in their service bulletins.
