1 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/12/2021

Traveling at 58 mph in cruise control for 10 minutes I increased speed with 4-6 rapid pushes of the accelerate button in less than 1. 5 seconds, each push is 1 mph. I have never pushed it that rapidly. The engine acted as if I floored the accelerator & the transmission went from 4th to 3rd gear, speed went to 70+ and rapidly increasing. I stepped on the break pedal several times to disable cc but no help, I switched the cc button to the off position several times, no help. Now at 85+ and accelerating hard in wide open throttle (wot). I shift to neutral and turned the ignition to the acc position to retain steering ability as the engine was rpm'ing out to destruction. I coasted off the highway and set ignition to off. After a few minutes I turned engine on and it rev'd out of control, still wot. Ignition off did not reset the problem. I opened the hood to disconnected the battery & I observe that neither the cc or accelerator cables are not holding the throttle body (tb) in "wot", it was closed in an idle position. It is not mechanical. I disconnected the battery for several minutes and then the system operated normally. I have used cc a million times but never have pushed that accel button that fast. I served 7 years as a reactor operation onboard us navy fast attack submarines, have torn apart and assemble mechanical and electrical reactor systems. I have been a hardware engineer for 40+ yrs and have 10 us patents in fault tolerant server design. I've been a car guy since 5 yrs old. This is a problem with the cars computer or its code. The rapid pushing of the cc accel button is key here as well as memory retaining this cc state after key off. Its a good thing I experienced with many hard casualty life and death situations while serving, because my car was accelerating out of control, my experience and training in the us military taught me to keep cool and think. You really should investigate this. I can tell you more specifics but I'm character limited.

3 Cruise Control problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 05/12/2019

The cruise control button sticks, when being pushed it clicks hard to get to work. The most important started a couple of weeks ago with the steering wheel on moving and pushing the gas makes a clunky and grinding sound and feel, the vehicle does not go anywhere then, the stability light comes on. The car starts moving, and the wheel frees up and the light goes out. This is every time I'm turning left after from a stopped position.

4 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/10/2018

Adaptive cruise control (acc) issues scenario 1 first day I was traveling at approximately 70 mph. As I would in any of my other 100 + cars I've owned, I held the cruise control set button expecting the speed to gradually decrease. The Impala much to my surprise, with traffic behind me, went from 70 mph to approximately 20 mph within 7 secs. The traffic behind me was swerving to avoid crashing into me. It clearly states on page 182 of the owner's manual reducing speed while acc is at a set speed. press and hold setuntil the desired lower speed is reached, then release it. When you hold the set button the speed drops so rapidly there is no possible way you could reduce the speed to only (for example) to 58 mph. Scenario 2 I was following a vehicle with the acc set. Vehicle ahead of me signaled to make a right turn and was merging right to make the turn. As I proceeded to change lanes and go around the vehicle, my Impala slammed on the brakes causing the vehicle behind me to have to swerve to avoid a crash. Scenario 3 referring to the scenerio 2. When the vehicle turning right cleared the camera on my Impala the Impala accelerated aggressively as though I was attempting to pass someone. It was very unexpected and to the point where I felt I could lose control of the vehicle. Scenario 4 when rounding a curve if the acc camera senses a vehicle moving in a parking lot near the road it again brakes harshly for no good reason. Again causing the vehicles behind me to have to react. The Impala will again accelerate aggressively once past the moving car in the parking lot. Scenario 5 in two lane traffic with the acc set, when you're rounding a corner if the camera of the acc gets the car in the other lane in its vision the Impala will again slam on the brakes. When the car in the other lane is out of the camera range the Impala accelerates rapidly.

5 Cruise Control problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/10/2017

I was driving on the freeway with the adaptive cruise control on at about 50 to 55 mph when suddenly the car went full acceleration. I tried to stop the car by turning off the cruise control, turn off the ignition, use the emergency brake, none worked. I then put the transmission and then everything worked, by then I was doing 90 plus miles per hour passing vehicles. I contacted gm and they tried find a problem but did not a problem. They said no codes appeared. This sudden acceleration lasted only a few seconds before I put the car in neutral. Will a code appear if the problem lasted only a few seconds. Gm closed the case.

9 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/05/2016

Major safety issue! while driving on the expressway hours from home reduced engine power/service traction control/check engine lights came on. Cruise control disabled as well. Car stopped on the expressway, steering wheel locked up. Luckily we were able to coast to the side otherwise this could have been a disaster! vehicle was towed to a nearby service station where it is currently located. There are several complaints out there like this. Gm needs to recall and fix this problem!.

11 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/13/2016

A few weeks ago our daughter was driving our 2013 Chevrolet Impala. She informed us that the car just "took off by itself. " we just attributed it to her not being familiar with the car. A couple days later, while my wife was driving and I was in passenger seat, at about 25 mph on a city street, car suddenly took off as if she had slammed accelerator to the floor. Pushing on the brake ended sudden acceleration, engine returned to idle, so I have to assume that problem is possibly related to cruise control circuits and that brake may have disengaged cruise. Cruise control circuit was "on", since we had previously been cruising on interstate, but was not engaged (or set) when incident occurred. This problem came out of nowhere, occurred twice in a week's time, then disappeared. We are wondering if it will occur again. 2013 Chevrolet Impala w/ 60,000 miles.

12 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/25/2016

I was accelerating and merging onto a road and just got into the middle lane. Suddenly the car kept accelerating even though I had stopped pressing the pedal. The engine was revving and the car got up to 70 mph in a 55 zone. The brakes did not seem to help slow the car. In a panic I shifted to neutral and was able to pull onto the shoulder and stop the car. Even when I was in park, the engine was still revving. I turned the vehicle off and rested it about 5 minutes and was able to restart it. It did not seem to have any problems on the way home after that. It was an extremely scary and dangerous situation as there were cars very close to me. I noticed that my floor mat was much higher than usual and was under the accelerator. I don't know if that could have contributed to the problem. I do often use cruise control. I cannot remember if it was on at the time and I cannot remember if I was accelerating using the steering wheel button. I do not believe I was at the time but the cruise control likely was on. All I remember is it going out of control. It seemed best to report the situation. I am very glad nothing serious happened as it very well could have. I may get a ticket for speeding though. I don't think they would ever believe this happened to me.

13 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

I was on the interstate, going the speed limit. I had the cruise control on when the car alerted me that the engine power reduced and service traction control. I continued to drive as these messages have appeared on my car before. I traveled another 40 miles along the interstate and was about a mile from my exit. I was passing an over-sized tractor trailer going up hill when the car displayed starting disabled throttle service and the car shut off. I was in the left lane and had to initiate my emergency lights and wait for the tractor trailer to pass me so I could move the car over to the right shoulder. As the car was completely shutoff and was just coasting, I had to fight the steering wheel to control the car. I feel like had my situation was just a little different, the car could have came to a complete stop in the middle of the interstate with cars traveling 70+ mph and possibly caused a crash. I've already replaced the throttle position sensor and that remedied the situation for a couple months. This a highly dangerous occurrence that I know is common with the Impala's as I've heard it happening to several other people owning Impala's.

14 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/11/2016

Engine power dropped significantly on a two lane hwy. Traveling at 60 mph. Almost got rear ended and experienced road rage from driver behind me. Scary. I then noticed a service traction control warning, and engine speed reduction notice. Cruise control would not function. This warning will clear itself but continues to occur. I took it to my mechanic several times and they can not identify it even when the warning and condition is active. Veh. Mileage 126700.

19 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

There are 3 recalls I have found that possibly are effecting my 2003 Impala but because my specific VIN # doesn't fall under any of these gm is refusing to fix these problems. 1)the body control module needs to be reset. Apparently when it goes out the cruise control disengages. . . . . And my cruise control light is on but won't engage. Plus my mechanic says the body control module also is what is could be causing my heater fan to not work nor my information display to work. But low and behold when the cruise control light goes off they both work 2) there is a recall stating drops of engine oil may leak on exhaust manifold with hard braking and I sometimes smell oil burning after I drive. If it was my actual engine leaking oil I would smell it all the time but I don't it's just after I drive certain places that are very congested and I brake a lot 3) there is a fuel vapor leak from the gas tank which is believed to be causing my check engine light to come on. It throws the code stating I need to possible replace the gas cap (which I have done) and only comes on after I have put gas in the car. I'm alittle concerned and applaud that just because my VIN # doesn't show these recalls but Impalas are having these recalls that gm won't fix these problems.

20 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/15/2014

Climbing up alpowa grade on hiway 12 in washington state, the check engine light came on, "engine power is reduced" came on in the odometer window. Aproximately 35 miles later, beyond Dodge junction and before starbuck turnoff, there was another message flashed in the odometer window, "ignition switch disabled. Service engine" the engine shut down, and the power steering became super sluggish. The car slowed down, and we were able to get stopped on the side of the road. At this point when we got the car running again, the cruise control would not work. When we reached walla walla, washington, we stopped at o'reilys auto parts, had one of the parts specialists come out and check what the code was on the computer, and found out it was the electronic throttle sensor that is defective. This is a pilot car escort vehicle, making the hazard even more dangerous, because had I been traveling with an oversized load, I could have been hit by the semi pulling the load, or I could have impacted the rear of the load, depending if I were following or leading. Also, had that happened while on a job, the load would have had to stop until another pilot car escort vehicle could arrive to continue with the load. This is a dangerous thing to have shut off when driving in areas that are not straight. Unable to control steering, brakes less than responsive, and possible hazards of vehicles oncoming or following us could become impact hazards. 2g1wt57n891104861.

21 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 05/15/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the cruise control comes independently, the headlights and brake lights would flicker ad the dashboard warning lights would illuminated intermittently. The contact mention that the heat had to be running for the cruise control to go off. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle would not be running and lights would be flickering. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure were undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was unknown. Ak.

22 Cruise Control problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/31/2014

Forward collision avoidance system inappropriate activation on several occasions at different locations. There were no other vehicle in front. There were three beeps/red light flash on windshield. The cruise control would deactivate and car would decelerate by three to five mile. The tail lamps are not activated to warn drivers following. This is my second complaint the dealer solution is to turn off the feature. It work when it should the inappropriate activation is a nuisance.

23 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/11/2014

I was driving down the interstate with the cruise control on when suddenly my car jerked and a message showing "engine power reduced, service stabilitrak" showed up. I noticed the rpms jerking up and down with a pretty dramatic range. When I slowed down my car started shaking. The worst part is that when I shut my car off the problem stops. This has happened 4 other times. Once while idling. Once while slowing down from 55 to 35 and once while driving about 35 mph. There seems to be no pattern and it is intermittent.

24 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph in cruise control, the vehicle began to stall. The vehicle also failed to increase speed when the contact depressed the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the fuel gauge also failed simultaneously. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the incident and informed the contact that the vehicle was not listed under any recalls. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

25 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

This the second time this has happened. Wife was driving down the freeway when traction control and check engine lights came on. Car went into reduced power mode and finally died while still moving. Lost power steering and finally brought car to a stop on left inside of expressway. After a short time she was able to restart the car and limp home. Note that the cruise control was on, but I do not know if it was set. Had the codes read that indicated a throttle position sensor caused the fault. There are two sensors which have to agree and if they don't car will go into reduced power mode. When she got home I found only the check engine light on. I have in the past moved the wires on the brake fluid sensor to get the check engine light to go off. Not knowing exactly how all of these different systems are tied together, I tend to think that the cars computer is the problem which sets off all the different warning lights on the dash. I went to the chevy dealership and the service advisor asked if this was a recall issue. I thought this was some what strange. After reading complaints on the net I can see why she might have thought it was a recall issue. The throttle body part is $300 dollars plus labor rate of $105/hr. As of now I cannot find any recalls for this issue. Nhtsa needs to look at this problem because the loss of steering with all systems due to motor stalling while in motion is a hazard to everyone.

26 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/30/2013

Driving 30 mph in a small town. A "binging" noise sounds 3 times and the traction control warning light as well as the check engine light came on. Vehicle messaging system stated that to "service stabilitrak," "service traction control," and "engine power reduced. The acceleration was noticeably reduced as well as a significant difference in maintaining speed. Merging onto a highway the cruise control would not kick in when setting speed which made it difficult to manage a 65 mph speed limit.

27 Cruise Control problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/17/2013

2012 Chevrolet Impala. Consumer writes in regards to power sensor failure in vehicle. The consumer stated while driving, the vehicle lost all power. The engine quit, the flashers would not work and he was unable to manually unlock the doors, or lower the windows using the power switch. The only way to unlock the doors was with the key fob, that unlocked or locked the doors from the outside. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. A diagnosis revealed a bad sensor and two burned wires. The consumer was assured the problem was fixed. A week later, the consumer returned to the dealer due to a malfunction with the cruise control. On June 13, 2013 while driving, the vehicle died again. It was the same issue that occurred back in February. The vehicle was towed to the dealer again. The next the day, the dealer informed the consumer, they still had not found a problem. Two hours later, the consumer was informed, they had found the problem, but the part had to be ordered. The part arrived the same day, and the consumer was assured, the vehicle had been repaired. However, as soon as he pulled off at an exit, the vehicle died again. After having the vehicle for over a week, the dealer informed the consumer, they found numerous exposed wires, that were causing shorts, such as rubbing on the transmission and other metal parts, many of them were not properly secured. Also, when the consumer turned on the headlights, he discovered the low beams did not work.

28 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/18/2013

I was on highway one evening and my cruise control was engaged. My power went out completely on the car. I immediately noticed that the car shut down and I was able to coast to the side of the highway. After gathering my bearings, I was able to turn the car back on and drive off the freeway. It was determined that my oil was low (no warning light). Prior to this incident, I was going down hill on a local street when my warning system came on and indicated that I had reduced engine power and traction stability control issues. After going to the dealer, it was determined that my oil was extremely low, however no leaks or cause was ever found. Prior to this, I had to get my accelerator sensor replaced because the reduced engine power warning came on. It was not covered under warranty and I had to pay several hundred dollars to 'fix' the issue. As recently as yesterday, June 16, 2014, I turned my car on and the reduced engine power and traction control warning came on. I immediately turned the car off and checked the oil. It was low but no warning light to indicate this issue came on (same as in the past). I faithfully get my oil changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever is first. My oil life was at 54% yesterday and I did take it in for an oil change this morning. It is obvious based on others experiences, that this is a known issue amongst 2009 Impala owners. The fact that I did not receive a warning when I was on a major highway and my car shut off while still in motion, is extremely scary and it traumatized my son tremendously. I am hoping that some type of investigation will be initiated because it could result in serious injuries or even death.

29 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

When on the highway doing approx. 65 mph with my cruise control on, all of sudden the cruise control dropped out and vehicle slowed down dramatically. . Also the heat and ac would not work at all. These conditions continued intermittently. When we went to my mechanic he had an ignition switch waiting, he knew of the problem before we arrived. As soon as he touched the ignition switch the engine shut off. Since we had the switch replaced we have had no problems. This sounds like a similar problem as the recall. Thank you.

31 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/04/2012

I purchased from valley Ford 4/18/2009 I have had nothing but trouble with it ever since I purchased it. I have had rocker arms replaced, pins, the aftermarket warranty company wouldn't replace them because they told me that it was not an internal problem, I have had pass lock problems which I had to get done, I just replaced the transmission in 2012 the computer on the car read that it was shift solenoids when it turned out to be the transmission. Now as of the past three months my low beam head lamps will not come on . The day time running lamps work but when it gets dark they shut off & the parking lamps stay on. The only way I will be able to drive is to hold the turn signal towards me, its not the bulbs they have been replaced & its not the fuses and no one seems to know what the problem. My cruise control light flashes on and off while im driving & while the switch is off & also my check engine light flashes on & off but when I take it to auto part store to have it hooked up to the machine it doesn't read anything. . . . . I ask that you guys can please help me with this car, & I also have proof of everything I just wrote receipts and all.

32 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

While driving my "service traction control" message came on followed by "reduced engine power". It slows down my vehicle and sometimes I cannot even accelerate when these messages appear. They always come on together and every single time I drive. Sometimes right away, sometimes after I've been driving for awhile. It use to not happen when I was using my cruise control but not even when that is on it happens.

34 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/30/2010

My first issue was with the center head restraint in the back which totally blocks vision using the rear view mirror. I asked the dealer to remove it and I was told they could not. Backing up is impossible except with the side mirrors and traffic immediately behind is blocked when driving. This is a serious safety hazard. There have been many complaints but gm refuses to issue a recall to adjust these headrests. Also, I live in the TN mountains and the cruise control completely disengages when going downhill. The dealership told me "this was normal and all new cars did this to save gas"! I'm not that much of an idiot! cruise control is set to maintain speed. . . . Period! please. . . . Can you help?.

35 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/30/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Impala. While driving less than 70 mph, the vehicle would not decelerate when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact continued to pump the brakes until the vehicle eventually slowed down. Periodically, while traveling in residential areas or areas where the speed limit is less than 55 mph, the vehicle will accelerate on its own. The contact would remove his foot from the accelerator pedal and the vehicle acted as if it were stuck in cruise control. The dealer believed that the cruise control may be the cause of the failure. The failure and current mileages were less than 92,500. Updated 11/12/08 updated 11/13/08.
