41 Headlight Switch problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/25/2010

There have been numerous occurrences of this incident during the last year; the latest being last night. Last night, I was running somewhere between 55 and 60 mph on a very dark night with my bright lights on when all of a sudden my headlights went out. The instrument panel lights remained lit. After frantically activating the steering column bright/dim switch, the dim lights came back on. This is a very dangerous situation because we live down long, curvy mountain back roads that are not lit. This is a very serious safety issue that is going to get someone killed. My research reveals that there have been untold numbers of identical incidents involving the 2004 Impala. I am not going to pay a tax payer bailed out general motors to fix a design related safety issue. Before I do, I will contact my attorney and initiate a class action law suit. Is it going to take the needless death of many people to get gm to fix this problem? hello out there. Is anyone listening?.

I own a 2005 Impala LS and while driving at night the headlights go out. This has happened 12 times with my vehicle. The last time it happened I was driving on the interstate at 75mph and they went out. I cycled the light switch 3 times and they went back on. I have done some research on the internet and have found over 60 people reporting the same problem. I think there are a lot more people with this problem that haven't reported it. I contacted gm but had no luck. This is a serious problem and would like to know who I need to contact before anyone gets in an accident and gets hurt or dies.

46 Headlight Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

47 Headlight Switch problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/20/2009

Headlights went out completely after dark at 55 mph . The problem is in the quality of the high /low beam selector I was told . I am replacing the third switch this week 3/16/11 since 09/20/09 . This to me seems to be a gm safety problem which I think should be a mfg recall . Have owned many of vehicles and never totally lost headlights . The cost is also unheard of can be $500 or more.

48 Headlight Switch problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/10/2009

Total headlight failure while driving at 65 mph on u. S. Highway 287 north of ft collins, CO. The failure occurred when changing from low to high beams on the headlights. This has happened many times since the first time last fall but we now have the fog lamps on so when they fail we at least have some light though it is minimal. We then have to flip the hi-lo switch several times to get the low beams back on. There has been occasion that after we get the high beams to work after a few minutes they will just go out completely. I have researched this problem online and have found there are probably hundreds of people that have had similar problems with the multiswitch gm used on 2000-2005 vehicles. The cost to replace this switch is outrageous $300. 00- $600. 00 so I'm sure there are a lot of vehicles on the road that pose a hazard due to this faulty switch. My girlfriend who owns this car lives on a narrow winding mountain road and has had these headlight failures in the middle of curves and it is very scary for her and passengers. If you could investigate this situation I would greatly appreciate it.

Failure Date: 03/25/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Impala. While driving at night approximately 65 mph, the low beam headlights failed to illuminate without warning; therefore, the contact activated the high beam headlights and continued to drive. 50 Headlight Switch problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. While driving approximately 55 mph at night, the high beam headlights failed to operate when activated. The contact's visibility was extremely poor and she pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road. She had to manually hold the dimmer switch while driving to ensure the activation of the headlights. The vehicle was able to be driven normally, but has not been repaired. The VIN was not accepted by the system. The failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 70,000. Updated 5/26/09 updated 05/28/09.

51 Headlight Switch problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

Had problems with headlights going out weather it's low beam or high beam mechanic had to replace turn signal/high beam switch and then that one only lasted 3-4 months. This could really pose a danger has the headlights go out completely, the only thing I could due is hold back on lever to keep high beams activated. The marker lights would stay on. To have this work done is getting expensive if I have to keep replacing this switch. Any help or suggestions would be helpful. I bought this vehicle used 2005 chevy Impala.

52 Headlight Switch problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

My 2004 Impala has problems with it's light/dimmer switch. One has to click the handle twice in order to dim/brighten the lights. A couple of time the dash lights and headlights all went completely out when I tried to dim/brighten the lights. This is a hazard. There should be a recall!!!!!.

53 Headlight Switch problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/27/2009

Tuesday, 1/27/09, while driving on a local country road to work at 6:15 am, vehicle headlights and other exterior lights went dark. Dashboard lights stayed on, but other exterior lights went dark for 8 to 10 seconds. Same thing occurred again Monday morning, 02/02/09. No dimming or warning, lights just went off and I was driving in darkness. 02/03/09 took Impala to gm dealer to run diagnostic. They determined problem with the multifunctional high/low beam lever switch (this unit also houses the cruise control, windshield wipers, and directional light controls). Est for repairs $735. 00. 02/07/09 had the unit replaced at another garage for $435. 00. I kept the defective unit. Have since done research to find other people reporting this same problem occurring on other Impalas ranging at least from model years 2001 thru 2005. In some cases the headlights stayed on, but they were unable to switch the headlights between high and low beam. I feel this is definitely a safety issue. I contacted gm customer service to relate what happened as I believe this is a very serious problem. I feel that due to the high potential for accidents involving injury or even death, this multifunctional lever switch should be "recalled".

60 Headlight Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/04/2008

While driving on a busy two lane highway at 4:00 am my headlight suddenly went out. I could not get them to turn back on, and could not see where I was at on the road. I did manage to safely pull to the edge of the road, and after trying several things to restore lights, I was able to hold the dimmer switch back and get high beam lights. I was able to complete my trim to work, using only high beams. Every time I tried to use low beams the lights would completely go out.

61 Headlight Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/14/2008

Driving at night using the auto headlight function, the headlight fail (quit) on highbeam. At 75 mph this can be a life threatening experience, I was luckily on a straight road at the time. When it happened I tried turning the lights on with the switch, pushed and pulled it and that did not work. I came to a stop and was going to get out of the car and the lights came back on. This has happened about 9 times. It only does it on high beam setting, it has not done it when the switch is pulled to the "on" position as of yet.

62 Headlight Switch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/19/2008

On March 19, 2008 I was driving to work at 5am and turning on my highbeams. A car was coming over the hill so I turned off my highbeams and my headlights turned off. In a panic I hit the brakes and ended up putting my car in the ditch. I was able to drive it out of the ditch but I was pretty shook up. After jiggling my dimmer switch I was able to get my headlights again. I took my car to the mechanic and he told me that it was the dimmer switch that needed replaced and it would cost $450. I found an after market one online and put it in myself for $350. I noticed my lights flickering before this event but thought nothing of it. Usually it was 1 or 2 times a week for two weeks when the switch finally went out completely. I would like this to be a recall on all dimmer switches due to the fact that I could have been involved in a serious or fatal accident. The headlights and instrument lights are the most important thing on a vehicle when traveling in the dark. In my case I was lucky not to have had this happen during bad road conditions.

63 Headlight Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/06/2008

Headlights randomly turn off at night while driving my 2003 Impala. Nothing I do seems to help them come back on. I have pulled over and tried to manually turn them on, I have turned off my car and restarted, I have hit the switch to go from bright to dim. Nothing has helped. They eventually come back on. This has happened maybe three times so far. I have no clue as to when this started but since you are making me pick a date I did. It would probably happen more but I quit driving my car at night for the fear of it happening again! have never taken it to the shop to have fixed since I am married to a mechanic. However he has yet to bother trying to fix it or see what could be wrong either.

64 Headlight Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/25/2008

My head lights failed on my 03 Impala. This is the third time that it has happened. Its something that doesn't happen everyday. But this last time really made me fear for my life. I was coming home at night about to some to a curve going 40 mph when all of a sudden the headlights went off. I almost went into the ditch and there was a pole right there I could of hit. I came online to try to find out if anyone else had this problem and that lead me to this website. Im really afraid if I didn't go ahead and do this that I would regret it. You people need to know that more people are having this problem and that its not a safe. I'd feel really guilty if this might have killed someone if it already hasn't. This is a problem that needs to be address!.

65 Headlight Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

The headlights are difficult to switch from high to low beam on my 2003 chevy Impala. The headlights have turned completely off during evening driving three different times. 66 Headlight Switch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/11/2007

We had just turned on to hwy 188 which is a country road in wisconsin. My husband had just turned on the high beams when without warning we lost all headlights. He switched in back to the low beams but it was unresponsive for 30 seconds, then after cycling the light switch a few times it came back on to the low beams and we didn't use the high beams at all for fear we would lose lights again.

67 Headlight Switch problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/13/2007

2004 Chevrolet Impala - the headlights will go out without any warning while you are driving down the road. This is extremely dangerous! I am still in the process of trying to figure out how to get this problem corrected. I have already had the light sensor replaced and the bcm replaced. Neither of these corrected the problem. After many days and hours of research, I think it may be related to the multi-function switch on the steering column. This must become a recall as this endangers many lives!.

68 Headlight Switch problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/31/2007

I own an 05 Impala we have had the headlight fail on us about 6-12 times we will be driving down the road and the headlights will go out I have tried running with the switch on and they still go out its has even happened to me on a curve I just about put the car in the ditch ive asked my dad witch is a gm certified mechanic about it and there's not a known problem that he knows of I would like this fixed before I do go in the ditch and my family is with or I get a call from the cops that my wife has smashed the car there is a problem and gm should have to fix the problem before some one is killed from it.

69 Headlight Switch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/08/2007

I own a 2002 Chevrolet Impala LS 4d. I would be driving at night with the headlights on and for no reason both headlights would turn off, driving down the road without ability to see. When I then I then hit the high/low dimmer switch several times with my hand the lights would return. This would occur once every month or so, and occurred at this approximate frequency of time for as often as I owned my car, since 2007. It is quite frightening to drive at night when your lights would suddenly go off without warning. Finally, last year the high beam would not click on with the switch apparently being broken. My father owned the same year Impala, and he reported the same exact problem, the lights would suddenly go out and he would have to hit the switch to have the lights return on. He had his fixed and it cost him in the neighborhood of 600 dollars. My brights are currently not functioning due to this broken switch with the cost to fix being around 600 dollars. I find it quite unusual with the same year Impala to have this occur, and find it extremely hazardous when driving at night.

70 Headlight Switch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala
