3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/20/2017

On 11/20/17 my wife was driving our car, taking one of our daughters to school when the car sounded an alarm and message of "power steering failure - drive with caution" appeared on the dash. She was on a city street and moving, but needed all her strength and body weight to turn the wheel. She had the car towed tot he dealer, who advised that their was a total failure of the electronic steering rack and pinion system, making the car unsafe to drive. Further, the parts needed to repair the condition are apparently on national back order, and as of this writing gm/chevy is not responding to my dealership's request for an eta on the needed parts. I am being told my car will very likely be kept through the new year. I am very concerned as this is a major safety issue for my family. Further, if these parts are on back order, and gm is not responding to the dealer with an eta, that tells me that this is likely a wide spread problem. I do not want my car 'repaired' with a faulty design or part that may fail again, creating a dangerous situation.

16 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

I was driving and came to a stop at a stop sign. I was going to make a left turn, when my steering wheel locked up on me. The only warning light I got was traction control, and the abs maintenance lights. It turned out that I had no power steering fluid in my car. I ended up having to get a new power steering pump. Then the mechanic that was working on my car called me to tell me that my rack pinion is bad. He warned me that it could go out at any time, and it's unsafe to drive. I would like this incident documented, just in case there are others that encounter the same with their cars. I do feel that the manufacturer should pay for this issue, because it not from usual wear and tear, this is a manufacturing issue.

Car was checked out for electrical noise coming from the dashboard from Chevrolet dealer and said that the vehicle had a electrical problem within the dashboard area (part- air inlet recirculation valve, actuator) which is why we heard loud clicking noises, noises would at time continue even when the car was in off position. But three days later took the car to my trusted mechanic to have issue fixed (non-dealer) and mechanic noticed that the steering column was broken (part: rack-and-pinion), and said that it has been this way for awhile. Mechanic showed me exactly what they saw and indeed the column was broken. 21 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/18/2012

First, I had to replace the rack and pinion steering. Could have been the steering knuckle, don't know. Then, I was driving about dusk and the low beams went dark. The car has an automatic switch that moves the headlights from daytime mode to nighttime. Local mechanic called the gm dealer and spoke with a gm mechanic. The gm mechanic told him the turnstalk assembly was defective and that they frequently replaced them on Impalas. I paid for both repairs out of pocket. Then, the heater would only work on the passenger side; heater blend door on driver's side was defective. Recently, I had the heater blend door repaired at my expense. Then, I had the transmission rebuilt at my expense. Gm would not assist with any of these repairs even though service bulletins existed on all of these issues. Looking at online discussion boards for this car I found all of these issues with numerous owners. The transmission would slip when going from first to second gear and then began bumping in other owners. What a lemon this car has become.

2000 Impala . Less than 50,000 miles. Rack and pinion needs replacing. Checking with other owners appears this is a common problem. No help from dealership. Appears GMC continued to use a known defective unit for years. Will not fix under warranty.

28 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/14/2009

First the wheel had a shimmy in it. The rotors were replaced and new brakes. That wasn't it . It was the front ball joint. 2. Car wouldn't heat up. Radiator cap replaced at dealer for 45 dollars. Rear defogger quit working. 4. Power steering out now and it feels like the rack and pinion going to fail. Car no longer under warranty now with 64k. I am tired of this lemon.

29 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/23/2008

1) tried to slow car down. Car would not turn nor halt. Ended up hitting the vehicle in front of me. Restored it 100%. 2) a year later, had 3 brand new rack and pinion's replaced in one month. Had the vehicle checked out. The a-frame is in excellent shape and so is the area surrounding the rack and pinon. Have pictures and mechanics as proof. 3) called the chevy company & was told that the car was manufactured in wisconsin. They claim they saw no reason to help with the rack & pinion as those cars were recall-free. 4) car leans towards oncoming traffic at times (this started after each rack and pinion was replaced). There is also a 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock dead zone in the steering column. Steering used to feel a bit normal. It was not like this until I had a new rack and pinion put on. Twice (in between) the boot would excessively leak (as did the original from chevy). 5) when I turn the wheel out of the driveway, the car makes kick drumming grinding sounds. Was told this was normal. It is irritating though. 6) the car didn't even hit it's 5th year (being new) before it started to rust paint off the top of its roof. I live where there is no snow or coast, and extremely little ice. 7) the check engine light never goes off. Had it checked. Was told it was fine. 8) was driving right next to a cop going down a steep hill when the speedometer stuck at 10 mph. I crossed my fingers that I wasn't speeding since I kept my speed next to the officer. Replaced. 9) combo turning signal & cruise broke off the steering for no reason during a turn. Replaced. 10) locks me out off & on for no reason. 11) this car is my baby as it was one of the last thing I got that was my mother's before she died. It is also my first car that has seen me through (and still) my college years. It is very sentimental to me for those reasons. My dream is to keep this car even when it's a classic.

30 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

The power steering went completely out many times in the past 2 years. It continues to go out all the time. The rack & pinion gear, the pump and the hoses were replaced with original delco parts but this did not correct the problem. The Chevrolet dealer mechanic told me it was caused by low tires but my tires were not low. I bought new tires but the problem continues. It is hard to steer on the straight road and it goes out on a turn and I can't steer it. I have to hit my brakes. A local mechanic has tried to repair it about 5 times and he finally gave me my money back and said to take it to the Chevrolet dealer which I did as noted above.

31 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/05/2007

On Thursday 01 Nov 07 and Monday 05 Nov 07 my wife was making a left turn off a busy highway where we live. When she tried to turn the steering wheel left it locked or wouldn't move placing her in a dangerous situation of possibly being hit by on-coming traffic. 32 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/15/2007

The 2006 Chevrolet Impala had a technical bulletin on a power steering hose I was never notifed off. The hose exploded, and the car could not move. It was towed to the 1st dealership. They said it was fixed, but it would not steer out of the bay. They flushed the power steering unit, and with days it would not steer properly. I took it to another dealership, which after two visits, determined it needed a new power steering pump. Then the accelerator stuck to the floor while turning. The car was taken to the dealership and a new accelrator was installed. The vehicle was returned to me again and athe steering went out, this time, I nearly hit a telephone pole while turning. The dealership took the car in and replaced the rack and pinion. The car again did not steer properly, and I nearly hit a phone pole on the way home. At one point the second dealership put over 200 miles on the vehicle. Gm said the carwas. In operating order . T had less than 17,000 miles on it, and demanded I pick up the vehi or be charged storage fees. I have nearly wrecked the car due to mechanical defects on three seperate occasions.

33 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/28/2005

While driving and without warning the steering rod broke. Weather was not a factor. Dealer told caller they did not have a mechanic. Later, the dealer told caller what was wrong with it, and caller's father said it looked like it had been welded before. Manufacturer stated they could not do anything to help him. Caller has not got the problem fixed yet.

35 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/15/2004

The steering was hard when making a left turn, as if the van didn't have any power steering. Making right turns didn't require any effort at all, it turned too easy. City Chevrolet fixed the problem. I have the same problem as the other ventures that were listed in the recall. For the safety of my family I had to get the problem fixed and couldn't wait for a manufacture recall on my van's VIN# because at that time there wasn't a recall.
