I have had major failure of all of the main function components of the steering and suspension. Multiple times I have replaced, the inner and outer tie rods, ll 4 wheelbearing assembly, sway bar links, control arms, cv axles. I have to replace brand new tires every 6,000 10,000 miles because the mechanical failures are wearing on the rubber so rapidly and al was and unevenly. I have never not had a n issue with this vehicle and have put more money in repairs then the payment, which are more than what I owe still on the remainder (financed). Also, the transmission is faliling rapidly. I have reported prior issues prior to this date. I cannot justify repairing, maintenance or emergency, a vehicle that is less than the value of the repair cost. Gm should be ashamed and punished for such crimes against consumers.

This vehicle, in early November 2019, at approximately 41,000 miles began making a "popping" noise from the passenger-side front suspension/steering area, primarily while turning left (and sometimes when turning right). The noise became progressively worse over a one month period. Suspecting it may be a defective tie rod end (passenger side), I inspected the vehicle (on 12/21/2019) and found that the steering knuckle (at the steering knuckle arm - where it attaches to the passenger tire rod) was fractured/broken, creating a major safety problem (the steering knuckle is fractured at the tie rod knuckle arm, and therefore it appears possible the steering knuckle could sheer off at the tie rod, resulting in total loss of steering control). This vehicle has never been in an accident, or hit any curbs, pot holes, or similar items. I first noticed the problem while making a 90 degree left-hand turn at approximately 15 mph, about 500 feet from my residence (while driving home). The issue/noise has gotten progressively worse since then, and based on my inspection last night it is very obvious that this vehicle is not safe to drive. It appears that the steering knuckle was manufactured incorrectly (it's an original gm part, which appears to have been made of cast aluminum). From my online research, it also appears that a lot of other 2000-2013 chevy Impala owners are having the same problem as me. This vehicle, in my opinion, needs to be recalled for this safety issue (bad steering knuckles). Also, this is a California vehicle with zero corrosion issues. Also, I work as an accident/claims investigator for a major auto insurance company (and therefore have significant knowledge of vehicles, collisions, etc). This vehicle is (by all objective standards) is unsafe to drive, and gm should be required to issue a recall (in my personal and professional opinion).
This vehicle is dangerous! ive reported some other mechanical failures that put me in danger but not all and they still have yet to stop happening. Ive spent over 10k repairing and replacing steering, suspension drive train/ drive axle and chassis components. But nothing has helped. As of late I keep getting alignments and replaced 2 tie rods struts control arms and wheel hub and bearings only to have my tires wear down unevenly and quickly in 2 weeks. I purchased the tires brand new 6 months ago. With a new wheels and front outter tie rods as well (which I again replaced 2 weeks ago). Also replaced in 2019; front and back brake assembly (shoes, pads, rotors) front and back (both sides) control arms, left and right front strut and spring assembly. New cv axle and front hub bearings full assembly left and right (2 weeks ago)additional left front strut and spring assembly (2 weeks ago). This list is just off the top of my head because there are more repairs; too many. Yet, the car keeps loosing steering and falling apart quicker every day. Plus, the inspection expires next month and it did not pass due to emmissions system issues. It is a 2012 & should not be problematic yet. I only keep repairing it because I am still financing since being ripped off by dealership at 23% Apr on top of overcharged 2xs blue book. Which has me far too upside down to trade in or even sell privately. I wouldn't sell it to my worse enemy anyway. Chevrolet should have to answer for their failure. Hard working people put trust in manufacturers and depend on their cars. I may lose everything because of mine but not without a fight and legal counsel. My next step is to contact a class action law firm to procure counsel for these matters. GMC, the NHTSA, and auto repair businesses (ie. Firestone complete auto care) will be contacted regarding the issue as well. Thank you.
While driving at no more than 65 mph on the freeway the control arm gave out and it caused loss of control. Then it hit the barrier wall and the 2 tire on the driver side blew on contact. Towed to mechanic and they said that the tie rods also went out. The brakes and shocks and struts were new and it is regularly in the shop for diagnostics and repairs. This is inexcusable and this vehicle needs to be completely recalled and taken out of circulation.
2008 chevy Impala ltz -- I am having trouble with the rear inner tires wearing down to the chords just like all the other complaints on here. I know it's not the tire brand, etc. As I've had a reputable mechanic put on two sets of tires. I found articles on a lawsuit and the fact that gm will fix the police cars with this issue, but not the general public's. I bought this car as a commuter car for my sons that will be college students and I need it to last. I want a copy of the TSB #08032a that addresses this issue. I just want my car fixed so that I don't keep blowing through sets of tires it is getting ridiculously expensive. My last set was supposed to wear out at 60,000 and only lasted 20,000. I am actually on my second set, so basically $1600 into tires alone, not to mention what it's going to cost me for the spindle/cambor/rear tie rods that is associated with the TSB mentioned above. Gm should be paying for this and it should be a massive recall. These cars are prolific in society. Lol. . . . We bailed them out in 2008, and they were cranking out lemons the same year. . . . Ironic!! gm refuses to take responsibility.

Had the vehicle aligned about one year ago due to it pulling to the right. The steering was still sloppy and continued to drift to the right. Well come to find out that the tie rod on drivers side was frozen and could not be adjusted. So a year later I decided to have the tie rod replaced so it would drive straight and true. After further inspection it was brought to my attention that the steering knuckle had a crack almost completely through. I have never hit anything in that vehicle to cause a crack in the steering knuckle. The vehicle currently has 37000 miles on it. I know the police edition has a recall for the same problem. Chevrolet should have recalled all Impalas from 2011 to at least inspect the vehicles for this issue. It is extremely dangerous and should be investigated to find out how many 2011 Impalas had this same defect.

Vehicle was stationary. Turned wheel to the right to begin to move. Heard a snapping sound and vehicle only moved about 5 feet and had no control of steering. Found the right tie-rod was broken. Car has 37000 miles on it. Car was towed to chev dealer for repair and they said the steering gear also needed to be replaced?? my cost was $1546. 19. Found a recall #12v377000 on this very problem, but the recall was for police cars only. This doesn't make sense to me and I feel my car should be included in this recall. This tie rod should never have broken and I feel gm should assume the responsibility for this repair. 2012 chev Impala.

I had been driving for about five hours at speeds of 70 mph. Stopped at a fast food place and pulled in to the pay window and heard a clunk. When pulling away from the window making a slight left turn, the right front wheel locked 70 degrees right and I stopped. Towed to a chevy dealer and he informed me the tie rod to the wheel stripped out of the connector rod bolt. The stripped portion was about 1 and a quarter inches. This had to take a while to strip out with no indications of a problem before hand and the alignment had appeared to still be fine. I have the two components and can send pictures or the components themselves.
2006 Chevrolet Impala. Consumer writes in regards to transmission problems. The consumer stated the transmission was slipping. She explained to the dealer, there was a recurring problem with the transmission. Each time, the consumer went to the dealer, she was informed they could not recreate the problem, and therefore no problem existed. Besides the transmission problem, there was a horrible ratcheting machine-gun type noise coming from behind the dash, when she changed the vent position. The loud noise lasted for about a minute and was almost ear-piercing. Also, the engine mount broke, the water pump, steering and tie rods failed, the engine burned excessive amount of oil, and the engine low oil light illuminated. The windows made a screeching sound, the sunroof would drag, the plastic headlight covered were fogged and faded. The tire pressure monitoring light was constantly on. On April 24, 2013. The consumer took the vehicle to an independent transmission shop to have them assess the same transmission slipping problem, she had been experiencing for seven years. They dropped the transmission pan, and they found fine metal, pieces of aluminum and clutch material in the pan.

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated the sidewalls on the tires were wearing prematurely. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the dealer stated that the rear tie rod was defective. As a result, the brakes, rotors and tires were wearing prematurely. The dealer replaced the tie rod and all of the components which were wearing prematurely, but the failure continued. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 75,000.
I own a 2006 Chevrolet Impala LS with 45,500 miles on it. In December 2008, I experienced wobbling in my front left tire. The outer tie rod was broken and had to be replaced. The tires were severely and unevenly worn, requiring a new set of tires due to bad alignment, and now I am hearing and feeling vibrations and clunking in the steering column. A google search revealed dozens of similar and recurrent steering column and alignment problems and complaints with both the 2006 and 2007 Chevrolet Impala. The replacement of the steering column is only a temporary fix. It comes back. I did not purchase an extended warranty, but gm does not regard this as being covered in the extended warranty outside of 36,000, anyway. Several have complained of steering failures and lock-ups which resulted in both injuries as well as damage to property and other vehicles. This is clearly a problem that can have fatal results if not corrected. Consumers should not have to pay to correct this problem. Replacement of the steering column would incur an out-of-pocket cost exceeding $1,000. Please issue a recall, if not for me, then for the people for whom the problem has not begun to occur and spare them injury and/or death.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Impala. While driving 65 mph, the rear of the vehicle veered to the left. The contact noticed the rear passenger tire was at a 45 degree angle with the vehicle. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was 14,375 and current mileage was 14,400. Updated 07/29/08. The consumer stated the right tie rod broke. I noticed the front right tire was wearing extensively on the outside. First I checked the tire pressure and it was at the proper amount. Then I went to have the tires rotated and was told to have the alignment check by the tire serviceman. Then I went to have the tires aligned and the technician said the tie rod ends had to be replaced because they were worn out and loose. I personally observed the front wheels and they both were extreme loose. The car has been regularly serviced by the Chevrolet local dealer and only had 37,500 miles on it. I had it serviced at approximately 35,500 miles by the Chevrolet dealer. I took the car to the Chevrolet dealer, who agreed that both the tie rods ends needed replacing and that he thought they could be replaced with Chevrolet paying for them. Both the alignment technician and the Chevrolet dealer service person told me that the reason the tie rod ends were worn out was that they contained no grease fittings and further that the ones Chevrolet finally replaced the worn out ones they do not have grease fittings. This car is a 2006 Chevrolet impla. I still am going to have to replace what was the front tire(s) before this discover due to this manufacturing defect. Further,I am expecting to have to replace the current new ones which have no grease fittings within 30,000 or again risk my safety and excessive and unnecessary tire wear. I am told by service people and technicians that I can purchase aftermarket (non-general motors tie rod ends) that would have grease fittings. This lack of grease fittings is obviously a very serious manufacturing defect, that endangers the lives of hundreds of thousands of Chevrolet Impala owners and their passengers and others on the roads. I am concerned about this what appears to me to be a manufacturing defect.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Impala. While turning the vehicle at various speeds, the contact heard a loud clicking sound coming from the steering column. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the steering column. Four days later, the noise returned and the dealer replaced the tie rods. One month later, the noise occurred for the third time and the steering gear mechanism was replaced. The contact is currently experiencing the same failure for the fourth time. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure and repair the vehicle. She filed a complaint with the manufacturer. The purchase date was unknown. The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the outer tie rod end was defective on both the driver and passenger side tires. While driving 55-60 mph, the entire vehicle fluttered and shook when the steering wheel was turned. The dealer replaced the tie rods and there had been no further occurrences. Currently I have 29103 miles on it. I had took it in shop 2 times complaining about problem w/steering ,and was told this was normal. I knew different. Now the warranty ran out the passenger side tie rod end was completely worn out,and the drivers side is bad also. I've contacted cheverolet and they said to take it to dealer and pay of course for them to tell me a third time probably that this is normal. I am scared of this car,but have no choice except to drive it . I beleive this car slip thru factury inspections . As also rotors was turn at about 4000 miles and again at 26000 miles.

The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer or independent repair shop on three occasions to have the tires replaced due to excessive tread wear. The contact stated that the tires were wearing excessively due to defective tie rods. The vehicle was not taken to have the tie rods repaired. A state inspection @30,000 miles revealed a bad upper control arm, left and right inner tie rod ends and both motor mounts. My mechanic feels as though these part failures are very premature and were caused by a very loose steering rack . He told me that I should contact someone to see if there is a repair bulletin for this problem. I don't think a car should need that kind of front end work a 30,000 miles . I'm also concerned that my wife ,who drives the car on a daily basis, is at risk while driving herself and our 2 kids to and from their daily routines. While driving and turning left or right the driver heard a loud knocking noise coming from the front. Vehicle jerked and vibrated. Then, vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the tie rods were defective, and needed to be replaced.
The consumer was having a problem with the steering. The consumer contacted the dealer and was told that the manufacturer was aware of the steering problem but was not doing anything about it. Provide further details. The steering shaft was taken out an greased. Tie rods went bad on the right side.
Odometer 1120 miles - Chevrolet Impala LS - purchased new in June, 2004. Situation: as I was exiting the lie via the woodhaven blvd off ramp going westbound, I was going the recommended speed limit (20 miles per hour). As I was following the curve of the road, the steering wheel suddenly jerked to the left, directing the car towards the roadside curb. In turning the steering wheel to the right to correct, there was a lot of resistance and it was hard to turn. The front left wheel hit the curb. The car moved off the curb in the direction to the right. The car felt like it was grinding metal and slowed down considerably. Damage: my inspection of the car revealed that the front drivers side wheel was pushed back in its frame towards the rear of the car. The rim of the wheel was scratched and small chunks of the tire were ripped off. The back drivers side tire appeared to be scraped as well. I am unsure of body or frame damage. Repair: bumper cover, lt fender, lt apron panel, engine cradle - pull & align steering gear & linkage, lt rocker molding. Replaced: lt front liner, lt front & rear alloy wheels, lt front tire, lt front lower control arm bushing, lt axle assembly 3. 8 liter, lt strut soft ride, lt outer tie rod, lt inner tie rod pillars - rocker & floor, corrosion protection. I started hearing a "clunking" in the front end. I can also feel "jerking" in steering. It is especially dominant when I am going slower and using brakes, I seem to be able to feel and hear it better when slightly turning to the right. I can also be stopped and just taking off to make a turn and can hear the clunking. I am scared that something is going to fall off someday and I will have no steering. Had it look at and mechanic thought it was a broken tie rod end he found on right side, that was repaired 2/7/05. . But clunking and jerkiness is still there.
Clunking noise when turning steering wheel and you could feel it in the steering wheel dealer said intermediate shaft needed replacing. They also said the tie rod ends were worn so bad the wheels could fall off. All of this is happening with only 26,000 miles on vehicle.
2001 Chevrolet Impala has a recurring incident of clicking noises at right front steering when the vehicle is turned left or right. This is supplemental to the vehicle developing a uneven wear at the right front tire. When taken to the original dealership, I was told that rotating the tires would solve the problem. As the problem grew worse (including a badly shimmying front end at high speeds),I took the vehicle to another dealership to address the problem. The second dealership found that the vehicle had a cracked weld on it chasis and repaired it. When asked about the tires, the dealership said that I would have to purchase new ones at my own expense. A smooth ride with new tires was short lived, as a badly shimmying front end had developed again (within 24 hours). Taking the vehicle back to the second dealership, I was told the problem was a worn tie rod. Once the problem was fixed, I periodically heard light clicking noised from the steering when making turns (right & left). Taking the vehicle back to the second dealership, I was told it was just a matter of lubrication. Once lubricated, the vehicle stopped making clicking noises for about 30 t0 40 days. I noticed that the clicking noises began when the vehicle is driven over uneven areas of a road or parking lot, or when the vehicle negotiates tight left turns (low speeds) and wide/sweeping left curves at high speeds. Never the less, I do not believe that the problem concerns lubrication. Latest maintenance date as incident date 10/16/03 (complaint: f/e snapping when turning. Diagnosis: inadequate lubricants in the steering intermediate shaft. Correction: removed shaft - lubricated and re-installed part# 26098237). The original dealership: rhodes Chevrolet of swansboro, nc (now under new name and management). The dealership making repairs: marine Chevrolet Cadillac Oldsmobile. Initial thumping/ uneven tire wear is within one month of vehicle purchase 01/18/01. VIN 2g1wh55k219163503.
2000 Impala LS had alignment done @35,000 miles. Noticed uneven wear on left front tire ~43,000 miles. Took back to dealer, they said to replace tires and they would realign it. Replaced tires ~ 47,000 miles, took back in and turned out the left front tie rod was bad they can't align it. Tires has about 1/2 of play in it, recommended not to be driven until fixed.

While making a right turn vehicle lost steering, and consumer hit a light pole. Dealer replaced a broken tie rod and a- frame. Consumer suffered a bruised arm. Please add amount of damage to vehicle.
Possible defective tie rod failure caused rubbing sound in the steering column dealer fixed the steering unit and the steel frame still did not correct the problem. Yh.
