Fortunately a police officer was able to park behind us in the road with his lights flashing to keep cars from running into us until we were able to get towed away. 6 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/17/2017

Last may I was driving my car from work going approximately 40 mph a message came on the information screen. Something about going over 160mph. The car suddenly slowed, couldn't seem to find the proper gear. At the same time the speedometer was going up and down showing 60, 30, 80, 0. Then it cut off. I put the rolling car into neutral and started it. It fired up immediately. I put in gear and continued until it was safe to stop. Let engine cool off and drove home. The speedometer continued to fluctuate, it also cut off and flashed the message again. Called dealership next morning and took in. They came back with diagnosis of transmission failure, need to replace. I shelled out $4000 for the transmission, now it is slipping. I drove home today and that message flashed across my screen along with the transmission struggling to find the proper gear. The speedometer was moving up and down. The speedometer was replaced when the transmission was replaced. I have contacted the dealership to schedule an appointment. I also made a formal complaint to gm.

9 Transmission Failure problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/30/2015

I bought this car used in 2012. This car had periodic electrical issues and a co2 sensor failure, but there were no issues comparable to a total transmission failure. Earlier in the winter of 2015, I noticed that the transmission would not shift up into fourth gear on the freeway until after ten minutes of driving. One day in ann arbor, mi, I was accelerating out of a turn when the rpm meter started revving to 6,000 and the engine lost power. After restarting the Impala, the car went a few hundred feet to red light and died at the intersection. I eventually was able to drop this vehicle off at an automotive repair shop following a long trip full of transmission failures and start-ups. The mechanic later stated that the transmission would need to be rebuilt. The repair cost was over $1,600 and the transmission still possesses the same problems that existed prior to this event.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that this was a known issue with the Chevrolet Impala's transmission. The contact stated that he adjusted his driving habits over the years due to the transmission failure. Recently, while parking in the driveway, the vehicle failed to move as it was placed in neutral, low 1, and then reverse. After several attempts, while in reverse and with the accelerator pedal depressed, the rpms increased, the front end jerked, and the vehicle finally reversed in the driveway and was parked. The contact purchased transmission fluid, a gasket, and a filter and took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to repair the transmission. During the repair, process metal shavings and chunks were found in the transmission. The vehicle was deemed non-drivable and was parked. The manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 8-4151643491. The local dealer (fox auto group, 150 robert dann dr, painted post, NY 14870, (607) 937-5431) was called to schedule a diagnostic appointment. Now it will stutter vary badly then it will find the gear then take off!! from this occurring I've almost been in three accidents thank god that no cars hit me I've done numerous research on this car and everyone has the same problem transmission failure and the issues that I'm having seem like this is the beginning before the end, there's seriously needs to be a recall on the Chevrolet Impala transmissions everyone is having the same issue it's not safe and it's unfair to consumers I still can't believe that there hasn't been a recall on them, I hope no one has to die before it's noticed please do an investigation on this issue.

I was turning left into a driveway going no more than 7 miles an hour, because I was following a car, when I heard a large grind then pop. I parked my car and knew immediately the transmission failed by the fluid trail and part left behind. I took it to a dealer and luckily it was covered under the power train warranty. In Dec 2011/transmission failed at 88900 miles on my Impala that I purchased brand new, car was out of warranty, I paid half and gm paid half , to rebuild transmission- so I thought, Nov 2013- 25000 miles later, trans started to fail again, I called gm, opened another case, no results or response, once again, Dec 2014, I contacted gm again, transmission gone in car approx. 30,000 miles later, from when they initially rebuilt the trans, and the dealer now wants 2200 to put a trans in the car, I paid almost 2000 before in Dec. 2011/jan2012 for that trans to be rebulit, here it is 30000 mile later and the trans is going. . . They should have re-called the transmissins in that car, because everyone has same horror story about the 2006/2007/2008's transmissions/ I have 3 seperate case #'s with gm, regarding that trans on my car. 21 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/12/2009

Gm 2006 Impala transmission failure. Upon initial operation transaxle shudders, stutters, and stalls upon acceleration demand. Failure creates an unanticipated and warning-less slow-down of my vehicle directly in front of other accelerating vehicles. A safety hazard results from possible rear-ending by following motorists that have to be unaware the car in front of them has stuttered and slowed down. It also is a problem for drivers as they cannot accelerate or pass other cars, and cannot safely or confidently evade road objects/debris/potholes. A review of this transaxle problem indicates many gm motorists share the same problems and voice the same concerns.

22 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

I have a 2006 Impala ss. The car was purchased used with approximately 12k miles, in early 2009 at 62k the transmission failed, stranding my family on the PA turnpike. In January 2011 at 101k we had to replace the transmission again. Luckily we purchased a gm power-train transmission and it came with a 3yr warranty. The failure symptoms were identical for each occurrence. 1st the transmission would occasionally shudder while shifting. Eventually it would shudder and predictably slip when maintaining a speed at or near 1800 rpm. This was especially noticeable driving up hills. Finally the car would not move while the engine rpm spiked when pressing the accelerator pedal. The entire failure period was around 1000 miles from the 1st sign that the transmission was having difficulty to shifting to the final failure. The transmission appears to reach very high temperatures and has a long cool off period. When replacing the power steering gear I noticed that the exhaust and engine were cool to the touch, but the transmission remained warm through out the repair. Thank for your attention in this matter.

31 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/31/2004

Transmission failure--2001 chevy Impala with 45,000 miles--basically no advance notice--stopped at a traffic light, depressed accelerator and transmission took awhile to engage before moving forward. Happened again at the next two (2) lights. Got car home intending to take to dealer in morning. Backed car out of garage--went 5 ft and it would not move further. Pulled forward and able to put in reverse to back out of driveway. Managed to get to dealer. Going to teardown transmission tomorrow. Should not happen on a vehicle with 45,000 miles---90,000 maybe, 45,000 no. This is my 3rd transmission failure with a gm product since 1980. Like their styling but don't know if I can continue to purchase their products.

32 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/25/2004

Automatic transmission periodically fails to proceed with shifts after reaching 25-30 mph. At that point, the engine roars, as though it had been shifted into neutral, and the vehicle ceases to accelerate. Sometimes this is resolved when the car shifts with a lurch. Most often, it is necessary to reduce the spead and once again accelerate the vehicle through the problematic range. This usually leads to the car resuming a normal pattern of acceleration. However, on some accasions this process has led to multiple repititions of the same problem, causing the vehicle to fail to accelerate properly into traffic for a prolonged period with resultant danger to those in the vehicle and in other vehicles nearby. This problem has been brought to the attention of the dealership five times over the past five months, with the first request for service occurring when the vehicle's mileage was just under 10,800. The first four service visits failed to result in effective corrective action. The results of the fifth service visit are pending.
