Power steering failure at 80k miles. Many, many posts on Malibus with similar module failure, this should not happen and almost caused me to hit a pole. The steering wheel twitches even when the vehicle is not moving. A power steering error message comes across the display randomly on certain instances of starting the vehicle. When the message displays, the power steering fails altogether. Turning the car off and starting it again re-establishes the power steering, however the twitching of the steering wheel continues. Malibus of similar years have been recalled for the same problem.

While driving 50mph on a state highway, power steering failed. Service esc and power steering alerts displayed 2/19/19. 6 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2019

While driving, the power steering failed and it was extremely difficult to turn the wheel at approxmatly 50 mph. Contacted gm about this issue, since similar models of the same year, with different VIN numbers, have been recalled for this same exact issue and they refused to consider repairing the vehicle, just because my VIN number was not included in the recall, but the same faulty parts are in the car.

11 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2018

I was driving in my neighborhood, when suddenly, my power steering failed. I had to use a great deal more effort to steer the car to avoid parked cars, as well oncoming traffic. I had a couple near misses, but made it to my driveway. Since, I have had the same power steering fail 4 times while driving in neighborhood and on the highway each timehighway. Fortunately, I avoided contact with other cars while moving, but only due to my experienced driving. If my kids were driving this car, they would have had an accident! now, I learned gm had an effective recall for my model, but for earlier years up through 2009. Hence, they have closed said recall and left me with nary an option. I am turning to you to see if a renewed recall can be reopened!.

12 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

The power steering fails intermittently. This morning it almost caused me to wreck while getting off the interstate. I went to turn on the off-ramp and my power steering failed, followed by several messages on my information display. (power steering, esc) once I turn the car off and back on again, my power steering returns. Since then it continues to shut down on me while driving. After looking into the issue online, I notice a large recall on 2010 Malibu's for this exact reason, but somehow mine is not covered. How is this possible when it is the exact same issue? this is becoming a major safety concern.

13 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2017

As I was driving down the road, the dashboard chimed and the power steering failed. This has happed two times within this week. The first incident was during an attempt to maneuver a curve and the second incident occurred while driving on a straightaway.

14 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2017

Power steering failed for the second time on September 10, 2017. I had to replace the steering column in November 2016 for the same condition. There is a recall for chevy Malibus up until the 2009 model year and clearly there is a weakness in the 2010. This failure was while I was parked in a tight spot and couldn't get out. I restarted the car until it recalibrated, but it will undoubtedly go again. Repeat of previous problem. Also had to replace the transmission after complete failure at 48,000 miles in January 2017. That was a mere $4600. It failed while in motion, but fortunately I was uphill from my home and I was able to roll it to the curb.

15 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving various speeds, the power steering suddenly failed and the esc, power steering, and traction control warning indicators illuminated. The contact had to restart the vehicle in order for all systems to return to normal. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired and the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that, due to the mileage on the vehicle, the repair would not be covered. The approximate failure mileage was 172,360.

16 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 65 mph approaching an exit ramp, a chime rang and a power steering indicator illuminated. In addition, the power steering assist failed and almost causing a crash. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering motor circuit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000 (steering) and was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 152,068.

17 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

The vehicle's electric power steer failed with no warning while my daughter was driving along a normal suburban road. This created a dangerously unsafe driving condition as she could barely turn the steering wheel. Fortunately there was no tragedy that resulted, but the car is not safe to drive and we towed it to our home then to a gm store. This is a safety issue that should be recalled as it is well known problem within gm and public forums across. I was informed that gm has created a special policy #15356 to address this issue when I was at the gm store, extending the warranty, they said it was only to 150k miles & our vehicle has 159k miles so we weren't covered. I asked if there was any maintenance that we could have done to prevent this, there wasn't any procedure. Further research has shown that there is no set mileage that this can occur due to the fact that is a faulty design & not normal wear and tear ! this really needs to be a recall due to the safety ramifications when the failure occurs and the steering becomes very difficult to operate creating a dangerous situation and is sure to the cause of accidents/ injury/etc.

18 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2015

While driving on a city street the power steering suddenly failed without warning making the vehicle extremely difficult to handle. The esc warning light illuminated. Turned the vehicle off then back on and the power steering was reengaged. Shortly after it failed again and the vehicle was driven immediately to the dealership.

19 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2015

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 60 mph on a freeway, the power steering suddenly failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The dealer stated that there were no open recalls for the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, they declined to provide assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 131,000.

20 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2015

Power steering failure, vehicle became impossible to control.

21 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2015

On 17 January 2015 I was driving home down a somewhat winding road and all of a sudden the power steering on my vehicle failed coming into a turn almost causing me to go into a ditch. The failure was sudden and I had to apply my brakes to avoid driving off the road. I have read around on forums and though many of the recalls for other models and same models of different years that have a similar steering setup. I believe it is the Malibus of the model year 04, 05, 06, 08, and 09 that are covered by the recall whereas my vehicle is a 2010 which is not covered.

22 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the vehicle was not steering correctly, the warning indicators was illuminated. The failure recurred on multiple occasions, the vehicle was towed to a dealer and was diagnosed with a electrical power steering control module failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified, the approximate mileage was 90,000. The VIN number was unavailable. Rw.

23 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2014

Power steering has failed. While driving approx. 15 miles per hour power steering warning comes up and anti-traction light came on at that point the steering wheel jerks to the left and hit the curb. Turned car off and back on to try and reset. This process works sometimes but not reset every time you do this we have to do it multiple times to keep going. This is a highly dangerous situation and I can see that the 2010 Malibu has had enough issues to get gm to add this car to the recall from 2008 and 2009 Malibu's.

24 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving at an unknown speed, the power steering failed without warning. The failure caused the contact to use excessive force to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.

25 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2014

Power steering failed while pulling out into traffic. Driving approximately 10 mph pulling onto a highway the steering cut out and the warning light illuminated. In order to avoid being struck by oncoming traffic, the vehicle had to be backed up down the street still unable to turn, and struck a light pole. No damage to vehicle other than rear fender popped out of place. Upon restarting the vehicle all functions were normal and warning light was off. Car was taken to dealer where it was test driven and scanned for codes- no problems found. This is a recall issue in the 2008-2009 Malibu, but 2010 models are not included even though they use the same parts. (gm's recall #14v15300).

26 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering failed. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
