Friday while driving I noticed an issue with my steering it was harder to turn than usual and a felt like a vibration. Sunday while I was driving the steering went out it felt as though the steering wheel locked mid turn causing me to lose control of my vehicle nearly wrecking luckily there wasn't any other cars close by when I got home I researched the problem only to find that it's a very common issue and that 2007 Malibu is the only year not covered by the recall even though many owners are having this problem. Chevy knows that their power steering is faulty yet they refuse to help 2007 model owners. Had I of been driving on the highway or had I not been lucky enough to be the only car on that road at the time people could have been seriously hurt.

Was driving down the road and could not turn the steering wheel when it was necessary to do so. Once I made the turn I couldn't turn wide enough because the steering wheel was tight and ended up in a ditch.

While driving my 2009 chevy Malibu on the highway at 60 mph my steering failed. There was a warning chime then the service esc/power steering light came on and the steering was very hard to turn. I was able to pull on to the shoulder. I shut the car off for a few minutes then restarted the car and the steering was working again. A few miles down the road it happened again. This continued all weekend. It was very dangerous driving. I brought the car to the dealer on Monday to have it checked. I was told they found a faulty steering column torque sensor and the dealer told me my vehicle was not covered under the recall. Nhtsa campaign # 14v153000 bulletin 14116 states 2008-2009 chevy Malibu built from 3/1/08-6/2708 are covered my car was built 8/2008. So it wasn't covered. The bulletin says tor replace the torque sensor assembly. The same part that failed on my car. The gm part # is 232310 sensor kit it cost $216 + $305 for labor + $149 for alignment and tax for a total of $746. 29. Which I'm responsible for paying. Gm is recalling over 1. 3 million car between 2005-2010 for the sudden loss of electric power steering (eps) assist. I believe all models between those years should be included in the recall. This is a very dangerous situation. Someone is going to get hurt. I'm afraid to let my daughter drive this car.

I was driving with my son and his friend (both in the back seat thankfully!) down a hill (maybe 10-20 mph) to a stop light when I heard a pinging noise and no longer had control of steering. The power steering and esc warnings were showing on the dashboard and steering was exceptionally hard. I was able (barely) to make the turn and pull over to the side of the road and turned the car off (very hard to do at a slow mph). I waited about 10-20 seconds and turned it back on and it seemed fine. I had an appointment for an oil change the next day and planned on asking them to check it. Later that same night, I was driving at about 35 mph when the same thing happened on a main road. I pulled into a parking lot (not easily) and turned the car off and back on, but it did not reset itself. The next morning I took my car for an oil change and they told me that the power steering is electrical and that they would have someone look at it the next day (it was Sunday and I needed to wait until Monday). Monday morning they called me and told me that I would need to bring it to the dealer for replacement of the power steering motor and that they've seen this multiple times with gm cars. I brought it to h&l chevy in darien, CT where I bought it and they told me that although there is a large recall for this issue, that my car is not eligible for it even though it's the exact same problem!! I see on the NHTSA website that there are many complaints about this with a 2010 Malibu and I would like to know how to get this covered by gm -- it's ridiculously expensive for a single parent (or anyone for that matter!).

For the past several weeks upon starting my 2009 chevy Malibu lt . . . A light comes on on the dashboard and says service esc and power steering. At this time I lose all power assist to my car and steering is very hard. When I restart my car it resets itself and then I am able to steer again unless it trips again. This is super dangerous and appears to be getting worse and worse. It is the same recall listed for several other Malibu's and gm cars but not my year. My year needs to be included in this recall also. I took it to the dealership and they wanted $600 to fix it and diagnosed it as the sensor in the steering wheel shorting out. I have a child and I'm literally afraid to drive my car anymore with all of the serious recalls going on I do not want to lose control this is ridiculous and I hope it's fixed soon. It's terrible to pay so much for a car that you don't even feel safe driving.
Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the steering wheel was tight and extremely difficult to turn as the failure progressed. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who stated that the vehicle needed to be repaired by an authorized dealer and that the steering column may be defective pertaining to NHTSA campaign id number: 14v153000 (steering). The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 14e044000 (steering) and 14v153000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the power steering warning light illuminated several times and the steering wheel was tight along with a strong vibration. The contact was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 15v064000 (steering) and 14e044000 (steering). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000.
I was going to make a left turn and I tried to turn the steering wheel and it would not turn using one hand, so I used 2 hands and turned as hard as I could. There was no power steering and was way harder to turn than any other vehicle I have driven without power steering. This includes large tractors, pickups, trucks and cars that had no power steering and were far easier to turn than my 2008 chevy Malibu ltz. After completing the turn, the power steering returned. It is happening almost every time I drive my car now and sometimes happens with turning right and more frequently turning left. I took it in to have it looked at and was told I need a new power steering pump at $440 installed and quite possibly rack & pinion at $660 installed. The shop added an additive to the power steering fluid and it is making it better, although it is only a bandaid and does not fix the actual problem. Gm currently has a recall for this type of problem on certain VIN numbers only. The recall has been issued using 3 bulletins. My car is not covered by these bulletins, although, the bulletins make it appear as though it is covered. I have read several other similar complaints on-line. This is an incredibly dangerous defect, as I have already had some "near misses" due to this defect.

After driving out of my garage, my steering wheel jerked and locked up causing me to hit the brakes. Power steering showed up on the monitor. Turned the car off thinking maybe I should have warmed it up a bit. Started car back up to proceed, steering jerked and locked again. Was too afraid to continue so called for a tow truck. Car is currently at the dealership, they are saying problem is the power steering pump motor and the electronic power assist system. They can replace the pump motor now for $650 and the eps assist when available. Wonder if I am being ripped off here!!! soon after I purchased the car, the power steering light would come on, I took it back to the dealer, was told they could find nothing wrong. The power steering light has come on several times over the years and steering would feel a bit tight or stiff at times, but never jerked or locked up on me. I thought is was due to the colder temps here in michigan.

As I was getting off an exit from the highway the car shut off and steering became hard. I let the car roll into the right lane where I could stop and turn the key to start the vehicle. The vehicle started immediately, steering was very hard. I took the car to a mechanic and the found that the power steering pump had to be replaced and the rack n pinion steering had to be replaced. One week later I drove the car to go to the beach with my dad and as I was driving the car seemed fine. When I stopped at a light the engine shut off again. Once again I drove to the mechanic the next day and when he put the computer to the car it showed that the #4 coil was malfunctioning. Thankful that I am careful and defensive driver. This situations are quite scary. I owned a kia sephia for since 2005 and never did I experience what I have been experiencing with this Malibu.

As I am making a right turn on airline street I felt it was a tight turn from the beginning & really don't think nothing of it, as I continue driving at about 15\20 per hour I was trying to make a right move to the right lane & once again my steering wheel was tight so I was force to use my brakes which I tried repeatedly but was enable to stop at that same moment there was a strong hit to my rear bumper by a commercial truck which end up being a hit and run from the commercial truck.
I purchased my 07 Chevrolet Malibu in Feb 2007. The power steering problem started last summer! the steering wheel is extremely hard to turn and it doesn't matter if I'm parking or turning onto a street. I have to reset the steering by turning the car off/on. In may of this year, I went to the er with chest pain and was diagnosed with a pulled muscle in my chest. I took my car to a mechanic in June, and was quoted $600 to replace the power steering. It amazes me that 2004-2006, and 2008 were recalled but not 2007. This is not fair at all. Please recall this part because I can't afford to fix this car!.
Steering is sticking and making odd noise.
Car shuts off while driving an steering is hard.
I have had my car since 2011. I didn't have any problems with my car until 2012. My steering shaft broke and it was replaced at a chevy dealership. All was fine until this year in March, where my steering was becoming very hard to do. When I turned my wheel, it would make sounds as if it was breaking and I needed to use a little more force to turn the wheel. As of may 15, 2014, I took my car to a chevy dealership where a family member asked if they could see if any parts on my car was on recall and there are several recalls for the Malibu. My steering is getting worse by the day and my car is driving horribly. I have a 4 yr and this is my only transportation to and from work. I'm afraid to drive too far because the steering wheel might get stuck and may cause an accident. I wanted to report this before something actually happened.

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the power steering failed. The contact mentioned that the steering wheel was very hard to turn. The failure occurred on two occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who replaced the electronic steering column and air bag module. The contact stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 14v252000(electrical system , electronic stability control , exterior lighting , service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). The approximate failure mileage was 106,888.
Steering wheel jerked to left and I had no power steering but I was still able to turn the steering wheel but was real hard. The indicator on the radio message screen indicated the power steering was not working. I pulled over and turned off the vehicle and restarted my car and the power steering started to work again only to have this happen again just a few miles down the road. I have been reading all the complaints about the steering problem that the 2006 Malibu are experiencing. Chevrolet corp. Should have a recall on all the models that have the electronic steering and fix them ASAP. This is a safety hazard and someone is going to have a wreak and major damage is going to occur to somebody or their family. There is a recall in canada but not in the USA for this safety problem.
Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the power steering intermittently failed on several different occasions and the vehicle stalled. The contact indicated that the steering wheel was tight and extremely difficult to turn intermittently. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled at a stop light. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that either the steering column or the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop replaced the steering column and the contact indicated that after the repair the failure did not recurr. The contact was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 14v153000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000. Dyd.
Tl-the contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while driving at no particular speed the power steering failed. The steering wheel was hard to turn. The failure has occurred intermittently over a period of six months. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced steering column and torque angle sensor to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000. Rg.
I continually experience sudden power loss while driving my 07 Malibu which my dashboard alerted power steering lost. At first this would happen randomly, however it has progressively gotten worse especially in warmer temps. I can no longer parallel park as the manual steering is much to hard. I'm scared to make any sharp turns as loss of power generally happens at that time. It's extremely terrifying to know at any minute my steering can go out while going 60 mph on a highway (which has happened) and I cannot maneuver my vehicle how it's suppose to maneuvered. Why are all other model years being recalled but not the 2007 model year????? dealership will fix the issue at my own expense which is close to $1,000 as the entire steering column needs to be replaced.
First time it happen sitting at a red light and the steering wheel jerked out of my hands and a message came a crossed the dash reading power steering it was very hard to steer but I managed to get it off the road turned the car off and let it sit then started the back up and it was working again. It has happen 4 more times since the first time and I was moving those times and you can not steer the car it is very difficult to handle when the power steering stops working I took it back to the dealer ship where I bought it from they told me it was covered on a recall but they had to take it to a gm dealer to have it fixed. Now the gm dealer said it is not covered. But I have found the same problem with alot of chevy owners with the same year & make & model as mine it is a big safety issue and I have found were gm has sent out recall letters with extended coverage on the power steering for up to 100,000 miles. They know it exist why are they picking and choosing which ones to fix and not to fix. I am afraid to drive it not only put my family in it. They should be held accountable for there product.
Steering wheel was hard to control felt my car moving in outside lanes, the next morning I began to pull my car out steering wheel was so hard to turn it just broke and started spinning around. I was in total shock and happy to be alive.
2005 Malibu maxx began pulling to the right, then a couple months later the power steering notification starting beeping on the dash display, the steering is tight, sometimes hard to turn. Found out the power steering is electronic and there is no fluid to add. The car has less than 75,000 miles on it. I am fearful for my safety and others with this issue appearing to get worse, and without warning, its fine for 10 miles then starts beeping at you, etc.
While driving my power steering went out. It felt like wet cement in the steering column. I have driven a car with out power steering before this was much harder. I pulled over opened the hood to see if anything was loose. Could not find anything. Once I restarted the car it was fine. 30 mins later making a left turn it goes out again, turn car on and off and it works again.
On 6/20/2011 I was driving down a major road with my grandson in the back seat in a child safety seat. Without warning my steering wheel started jumping and pulling hard to the left. The steering was stiff and hard to pull back to the proper direction. Then it pulled so hard that it was at a point I almost put my car into head on traffic or a ditch. I was fortunate enough to find a parking lot to pull into. I turned off my engine and composed myself. I was able to get my car back home. I had no warning of power steering system on my warning system until this problem happened. This is a major problem that needs to be on a recall notice. I have researched this on the internet and I am not the only one that has had this issue. There are many. This could have been a major accident since this was a major road (hwy146). We took my car to ron craft chevrlet for the repairs within a couple of days. We do not have the part taken off, but I am sure they have this on record. I have the invoice and cancelled check. They replaced the electric steering motor. I would like to have this on a recall as soon as possible.
2007 Malibu has an electric motor for the power steering. The cheverolet dealer/repair department say the electric motor needs to be replaced at my cost around $700. 00. From the complaints I have seen and read it does not appear my situation is an isolated one. When driving the steering is hard and there is a lot of cluncking nosie. The steering makes the noise and steers hard all the time.
Upon acceleration using the gas pedal, the car loses total control of its steering. All engine lights and failure lights go on. Sometimes just making a simple turn at an intersection, the car loses complete steering capability. This has happened at various speeds, including on the highway at 50 mph accelerating over a slight incline or at 10 mph at an intersection while making a left or right turn. I noticed trouble with the steering when I first bought my car under warranty but it wasn't as severe. Just when backing out of a parking space the steering was tight, but the dealership could not find the problem. I have had the short rack steering gear, steering rack, intermediate shaft, and serpentine belt replaced but to no avail. . Read more...
Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the steering wheel was tight and also that there was a progressing failure in which the steering wheel was randomly locking for an extended period of time. The contact constantly had to turn the vehicle off and restart the vehicle each time the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop who was not able to replicate and diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14e044000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and they provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.
The power steering locked up while I was making a right turn. The power steering notification went on the dash and the chime came on. The power steering is really hard to turn, and I mean hard. The car is only 5 years old as well. Its a 2005 chevy Malibu.
The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving at the speeds of 25 mph, the power steering was very hard to control when making a turn. Other times whenever the vehicle is being parked it will shake and jerk. The dealer was contacted and they stated that he will need a new electronic motor and a control module for the power steering. There have been no diagnosis and no repairs. The failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 51,800.
2004 Malibu. Steering was hard on one side and soft on the other. Too it to dealer. Dealer fixed it by computer. Now both sides of steering re equal - but - it continually wants to steer on its own to the right. It will not hold a straight line, unless I keep my hands on the steering wheel. If I hold it loosely, it will veer right into whatever is on my right side. Dealer said this is normal.
I have a 2004 chevy Malibu maxx. On Jan. 26, I got into the car. My check engine light came on and the information center said to check power steering. The steering was a little hard. My friend was going to check it when I got home. By the time I got home that night, the problem was not occurring and the lights were off. This has happened a couple times since. Then today, 3/2/2010, I got in the car. It was very difficult to steer until about 15 mph. It was less difficult between 15 and 30 mph, and o. K. , but not normal, over 30 mph. When I got to work, I had to move my car after a few minutes. When I got into it and moved it, the steering was fine. I am reporting this because of the similarity with the cobalt steering issue that has caused a recent recall. The symptoms sound exactly like the news reports, but the Malibu isn't on the list yet.
I was driving my car and the power steering lock up it was hard for me to turn and a display appear on my radio power steering so I took the car to the dealer and they diagnoised it stating that the power steering motor had went out and something about the steering column the shaft was bad this was in 2010. Again I was driving my car this is in 2014 the same thing happen I take the car to the same dealer and they diagnois it this time as a torque sensors but I new something was wrong they did not want the codes to be the same as before so they used another code which is the torque sensors. So I take the car to another chevy dealer and they diagnois the car and said the power steering motor is bad and the steering column is bad just like in 2010 and I no that this dealer is right because the car done the same thing as it did in 2014 as it did in 2010 the first dealer was trying to cover up that it was the same thing so they used different codes. I talk to gm and they agree with the first dealer and said there is nothing they can do I also wrote a letter to mary barra but I don't think she got it only the sec. I think its sad that they no that there's problem with these cars the 2007 Malibu and wont do anything about it.
I purchased a 2006 used chevy-malibu on Feb. 22-2008. With 3600 mileage. After driving for 2 weeks the steering wheel would lock-up along with a bell going off and a light flashing steering wheel problems (the light stayed on for a short period of time). I tried to steer with the car operating in manual steering which was very hard to do since I'm 72 years old. I let the car drift to a parking lot and proceeded to cut the motor off and start again to try to get power steering in an operative mode. This happened to me a number of times . Coming out of my driveway there is a fire hydrant and the wheel locked and I could not turn away from the hydrant in time and I hit it. I was turning a corner in to traffic and it locked again. I called the dealership and they said to take it to someone that required that I leave it overnight . But the shop was quite a distance from my home. I waited until July and called the salesman who works at a different place now and he said I could take to any Chevrolet dealer to have it repaired. I have an extended warranty with zurich . The repair shop states that they don't cover all the cost to get it repaired less $200. 00 out of pocket. I want to know if there has been some other complaints or if there is a recall on this type vehicle.
