I have a gas leak coming from the top of my gas tank. I noticed gm has had recalls for this on certain vehicles but not for my specific vehicle(09 chevy Malibu). I have read online and several other 09 chevy Malibu owners have the same problem. I called the chevy dealership and they said there is no recall and cannot help me.

You can smell fuel when you are by the car. At this time it takes 2 to 3 cranks for the car to start. I'm told that there is a leak on the top of the fuel tank somewhere.
At approximately 79k miles the fuel gauge started to go to minimum level, with the fuel level warning light, and then back to the actual level. Once it started happening it increased in frequency, but with no real pattern. After 3 or 4 occurrences the check engine light came on, code p0463 "fuel level sensor a circuit high input". Since then every time I clear it comes back on with the first occurrence. As an instrumentation technician, and an electrician, this tells me there is a higher than expected current, that could potentially cause a spark or a fire, in a device that is connected to the fuel tank. The fact that there is not already a recall tells me that no one has died. . . Yet.

My 2007 chevy Malibu fuel gauge goes to empty after a fill up and then it will go to full and then back down to out of fuel causing the engine check lite to come on - at first the lite would go out when I had less then a 1/4 of a tank of fuel - now it stays on all the time. I have been reading that this is a problem with the 2007 Malibu. The repair for this is 600-800 dollars!.
After filling the gas tank on my 2007 chevy Malibu the gas gauge went to empty and began acting erraticaly. This has happened 6-7 times over the past month. Typically when this happens the check engine light also comes on but not always.
I filled my car up for the first time since purchase to find the guage goes from full to empty at any time. In a 10 minute drive, it went up and down 6 times. The fuel light comes on and the check engine light turns on. As I researched the problem online, I see many compalints about this happening. It's an expensive fix, which is why I believe nothing is being done about it. This is more than a nuisance, as most have stated. How am I to know when there is a real problem with my engine if the light is on always? how am I to travel any distance not knowing if my tank is full or almost empty? what if I run out of gas in the middle of no where?.
Shift level does resond when shifting into low (l). Dealer said shift lever cable is bad and is a common problem. Second item had to replace fuel sensor in gas tank as it failed also was sending an over voltage signal to gas guage. Also a common problem.
I have only had my 2006 Chevrolet Malibu for 6 weeks, and I already am experiencing 3 major problems. 1. The fuel gauge will go wild anytime gas is added to the tank, and as the weeks have gone by it is less accurate. I only know when my gas tank is full or empty. I have no idea on anything in between. 2. When I will start the car the power steering will not come on with the car. I will have to turn the car off, remove the key and open and shut the door to register the next try as a truly new start. If you fail to open and close the door, the car does not completely power down so it will not recycle. 3. The power sterering assist will begin to lock up on me while driving, and I will have to fight the wheel to keep the car going straight. I have let go of the wheel once or twice and the wheel will turn enough in one direction to nearly do a uturn. If this were to happen when a driver was inattentive, im pretty sure it would cause one heck of a accident!
the worst part is that the dealer I bought the car from had the car for 8 months, so they must have know about these defects and sold it to me anyways. The dealer put gas in the car before we did the paperwork. I know the guy saw the gas gauge going nuts, and that's why he insisted on being the one to drive the car to the gas station. I think they might have reset the computer to get the car to behave for test drives, because I had only put 40 miles on it before all this stuff started. Certainly not a coincidence.

The fuel gauge goes from full to empty and back to full and continues the entire time I am driving. It started just when I was at a full stop at first, but now does it constantly. This triggers the check engine light to come on and stay on. At first, as soon as I would fill the gas tank, the check engine light would go off until I got back to 1/2 tank, now it doesn;t matter. It is just on all the time. I see many of the same complaints and I don't understand why gm has not done a recall!!!! I read about a gas smell starting in dome and I had just noticed that on mine this morning!! 8 more payments and now look at what I have . I have been quoted up to $650 to get this fixed. The car only has 60,000 miles. Cant we in the us build a car to last longer than that!! gm needs to accept accountability for a faulty system and do the recall!.
Power steering recall 04050 and replaced in 2005 with 9,296 miles under warranty and need it again at 26,000 miles today. Front bracket replaced in 2006 with 19,217 miles and needs it again at 26,000 miles today. Fuel leak twice once in 2006 at 19,102 miles and replaced tank in 2007 at 20959.

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact stated that fuel was leaking from the top rear of the fuel tank and was emitting a strong odor of gasoline both in and outside of the vehicle. The vehicle was not inspected for the failure or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 102,000.
The fuel gauge is erratic after I fill the tank, the gauge goes directly to empty after driving about 2 miles. It would correct itself when there was about a half tank of gas left. It did this for about 5 months, now it either says the car is empty or full. Now after filling my car I have to set the odometer to keep track of my miles I have driven in the car.
The fuel sensor on our 2007 chevy Malibu only works occasionally. It will typically read empty regardless of the fuel level and the check engine light comes on. Obviously a major problem with this car as many owners are seeing the same problem. The sensor is inside the gas tank so this issue cannot be due to excessive wear and tear, it is simply a bad design or a bad part. Either way gm needs to accept responsibility for the mistake and fix their mistake. With cold winter driving an inaccurate fuel sensor is a hazard. The trip meter can give a rough estimate, but as mpg changes considerably between highway and city driving as well as winter vs. Summer this is not a very safe solution.
For more than two months now, since June 10, 2011, my gas gauge keeps jumping up and down, and can remain to the "empty" or "0" sign for more than a hundred miles. Then I receive messages that my gas tank is empty even when it is full. This occurs at the moment when I add gasoline in the tank or fill out the tank. Then, since June 17, the empty sign has been accompanied by the alert engine sign. Until the end of July, the two alerts would routinely disappear after I have driven for about 100 miles or after a day or two days. But for more than three weeks now, the two alerts can stay for a week and beyond 100 miles. But they would eventually disappear and would reappear once I put new gasoline in the car or fill out the tank. On August 18, 2011, I brought the car to a mechanic and the diagnosis was that is was the failure of the gas tank sensor. Saying that the gas tank will need to be taken out to install a new sensor. When I went to google for get additional information for this specific issue for Malibu 2007, I found out that other people were complaining about the same problem with their 2007 Malibu. I called Chevrolet asking if Malibu 2007 has been recalled for this particular problem, I was informed that the recall can only be issued by the NHTSA. That's why I am filing this complaint.
My 2007 chev Malibu fuel gauge goes to empty after a fill up and then it will go to full and then back down to out of fuel causing the engine check lite to come on - at first the lite would go out when I had less then a 1/4 of a tank of fuel - now it stays on all the time. I have been reading that this is a problem with the 2007 Malibu. The repair for this is 600-800 dollars! I have owned at least 20 cars in my life and never had a fuel tank gauge go bad?.
Faulty gas gauge on my gm Chevrolet Malibu. I ran out of gas and was stranded just after the the low fuel light went on. I had never run out of gas and just previously during my drive the fuel level read between 1/8 and 1/4 full tank. So the fuel level reading indicated more fuel availability than was actually available in the tank. I probably only went 10 miles after the low fuel light went on and my car has good fuel economy. I think the reading was inaccurate. I have had multiple incidents of random fuel level reading while I was driving, with the low fuel light and bell going off, then later returning to another, not low fuel level, and the low fuel light going off again. This is very frustrating. I feel like I cannot trust the gauge and I reset my trip odometer on every fill-up so I can keep track of how many miles I've driven.
When attempting to refuel the vehicle, the gas gauge would decrease to zero and the check engine warning light would illuminate. Normal operation would resume after the tank was half empty. In order to correct this problem the dealer stated that whis would require a comple replacement of the sending unit all sensors as the common cause of this is corrision if the float by the gas, the dealer said this is a common problem.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While the contact was driving approximately 65 mph, the fuel gauge displayed an inaccurate reading indicating a full capacity level although the fuel tank was empty. Suddenly, the vehicle stalled as a result of the empty fuel tank. The vehicle was refueled and resumed operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the fuel tank sensor was replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
My 2007 Malibu lt began having difficulties intermittently with the gas gage dropping to empty after filling it up. This caused the check engine light to also come on. Initially this would clear up after about 100 miles, then it took a quarter tank, then half a tank and now requires the gas to be slightly below a quarter of a tank of gas (having used three quarters) before the check engine light goes out. My remote starter will not work when the check engine light is on. Living in northern NY this is an inconvenience. I have a friend who's envoy was doing the same thing and it was fixed under a recall. Why is the Malibu not being recalled when obviously this is a major issue!.
My car for the last year or so has said that my fuel tank is empty, even right after I fill it up. I've been told by auto zone that it's my fuel sensor in the fuel tank that is broken, that's why my check engine light is on and my gauge is always on empty. They told me that there is no recall for my car and that it would be at least 400 to fix not including labor. I've looked at all the complaints and the majority of them are dealing with the same problem that I have. I'm not made out of money and I'm worried that one day I might run out of gas or something could happen. I usually always have my toddler in the car with me and if I had the money for a new car, this wouldn't be a problem. I'm guessing since this is an expensive fix, nobody wants to recall these cars and own up to their mistakes. What happens if there is a crash one day because of this. I'd like to know why there's no recall but a ton of complaints about the same thing.
Fuel level sending unit not operating properly. Started out dropping to empty and activating the trouble light and low fuel display when there was still half a tank of fuel. Now it does it with 3/4 tank or more. After the fuel gets lower than 3/4 tank often the fuel gauge will drop to empty and stay there until I fill the tank back up then the gauge will only move to full after driving a bit.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu LS. The contact stated that the fuel gauge was inoperative and would read that the tank was either empty or full erroneously. The check engine warning light would also illuminate intermittently. The dealer denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle and the manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 73,000. Updated 11/16/lj the consumer also stated the catalytic converter was clogged and the vehicle would not accelerate in passing gear. Updated 11/30/11.
On sept. 29, 2010, I bought a 2000 chevy Malibu in NY from a NJ dealer, the next day I noticed the check engine light on, so I took the car to a mechanic who told me that there was an issue with the gas emissions. I paid him to do a special emissions gas treatment, the check engine light remained on. The same car also has exterior lighting issues (the turn signals sporadically work and suddenly stop without warning and the emergency blinkers won't work either), I submitted this issue in a complaint on this website NHTSA. Dot. Gov on yesterday oct. 22, 2010. However I am submitting this because it is possibly related to the recall gas tank issues of this make, model and year car.

The gas tank on my 2007 chevy Malibu is coming apart at the seems. I noticed a bad gas smell while on a trip to my brothers in union, ky. The smell grew as I drove, after I returned home a mechanic looked under my car and informed me that my gas tanks is splitting at the seems. I have since contacted the dealership and asked about possible recall and powertrain warranty information since I am over 36000 miles.
The fuel gauge suddenly drops to empty, then back up again. Check engine light has come on. Started 2 tanks of gas ago.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline emanating from the vehicle. Upon further inspection, he noticed a large puddle of gasoline near the fuel tank. He took the vehicle to an authorized dealer and they stated that they would need to replace the delivery pump and associated hoses at the cost of $513. The technician added that this was a common failure. The failure and current mileages were 101,143.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the steering would lock abnormally and without warning while driving various speeds. There was also an abnormal rattling from the steering wheel. In addition, the fuel level gauge would provide erroneous fuel level readings and the interior lighting would malfunction sporadically. The steering failure was repaired under an unknown recall, yet the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where he was unable to duplicate the steering failure but replaced the fuel tank sensor. Later, the contact was involved in an unrelated crash and while having the vehicle repaired, the contact was advised that the steering column was locked defectively and would need replacing. The steering column was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 45,000.
: the contact stated if the gas tank is not kept above half full, the vehicle shuts off completely, and will not start again until at least 5 more gallons of gas is put in the tank. The vehicle has been taken to an independent mechanic, who changed the air and fuel filters. They can not determine the cause of the problem unless the vehicle is brought to the repair shop at the time the incident occurs. This has occurred more than 10 times while driving, and usually at speeds of 60 mph.
