Brake Electric Antilock problems of the 1996 Chevrolet S10 - part 1

On a dry well traveled road with an emergency vehicle approaching an intersection from the right, I applied my brake (non panic) and at first braking was as expected. Then pedal went down and braking action was lost. The same problem has occurred at least 5 times before over the years. My dealership in California has on two occasions attempted to recreate the problem but at a problem rate of once a year the likelihood of this occurrence in a 20 minute period is poor. The dealership can not find any abs malfunction. The abs was reprogrammed 2 years ago per a service bulletin without correcting the problem. Gm has refused to take effective action to fix this problem. Gm points out that many conditions can cause the abs mode to be activated. My arguement is that my S10 should not require 3 to 4 times the normal stopping distance to stop.

Brakes power was lost while applying brakes, there was a noise.

While traveling on a side street was blind by sun. Consumer applied brakes and pedal went all the way down to the floor. Vehicle did not stop, resulting in a collision. Dealership is aware of problem.

Recall 99 v 193 000/abs: abs system engages intermittently and causes extended stopping distance. Also, recall 98 v 150 001/windshield wipers: windshield wipers work intermittently. This can result in inoperative wipers, thus, reducing driver's visibilty, and increasing risk of a vehicle crash. Dealer/manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was not covered under the recall due to VIN. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

When applying brakes on a wet surface vehicle loses certain percentage of braking. When attempting to stop by applying brakes, vehicle keeps on going.

Slowed by normal braking to 15 mph, additional braking required more foot pressure which resulted in almost total loss of braking. Dry road conditions. Occurs 2 to 3 times a year. Software fix installed per recall.

Abs will release; when brakes are applied and turning a corner, they start to apply then there are no brakes at all. Dealer says there is nothing wrong with the abs brakes.

When I apply the brakes, there are occasions when it feels like they release! and I do not have the ability to stop. Because of this I have narrowly missed other cars, and have had to use curbs to stop. This has happened on more occasions than the one listed below.

While driving and applying brakes abs engaged and the rear came around about 3 inchers to the right. This only happened when payment was wet or raining. This caused consumer to lose control.

While traveling 35mph and as a result of a sudden stop vehicle continued to travel with pedal to floorboard, causing consumer to hit another vehicle. Dealer has been notified.

When ever the brakes are applied suddenly, the abs brakes had no braking ability. Brake pedal goes to halfway to floor. This increase the stopping distance. The problem only occurs on dry roads. Contacted gm & informed no recalls. Vehicle is not at dealership.

Abs brakes reeceived letter from GMC about this problem. After going to the dealer they ran my VIN number and said this does not apply to this truck even thou I have this problem.

When brake pedal was applied while driving at 15 mph, it felt mushy and soft like mud. The brakes did not respond, causing the vehicle to continue rolling into the rear of another vehicle. There was minor damage (scratches). Vehicle was stopped due to the crash. Dealer has been contaced.

The anti-lock indicator comes on upon start up of vehicle and stays on. Periodically the anit-lock indicator will go off for anywhere from 1-30 minutes and come back on. It continually switches during vehicle operation. During the transition between the two states the (red) brake indicator comes on momentarily, during witch no braking is available.

While driving at 2 mph and going through some water applied the brakes, and the brake's went straight to the floorboard. Vehicle slow down and came to a stop.

While driving at 35 to 45 mph on wet pavement consumer applyed the brakes and brakes went half way to the floorboard. Vehicle slowed down, and consumer was able to bring the vehicle to a completely stop. When police officer arrived, he got into the vehicle and applied the brakes, and the brake pedal went straight to the floorboard.

Consumer was driving at 70 mph and applied the brakes, pedal was hard and went straight to the floorboard, and the abs system kicked in. Consumer took foot off the brakes, and the there wasn't no type of power assistance.

While driving on a bumpy road or slightly going down hill, anti-lock braking system activates too easily. When this prblem occurs vehicle takes twice as long to stop.

While following another pickup truck about 4-car lengths behind, truck in front swerved right, and consumer hit brakes. But abs brakes did not come on. Consumer rear ended vehicle in front on drivers side. Consumer told dealer about a recall on abs brakes. Dealer had knowledge of it. Recall 99v193000.

Brake pedal goes to floor with a panic stop. Takes too long to stop. On dry or wet pavement. 4 bad times since new.

When depressing brakes vehicle goes into an extended stopping distance on wet roads. Had recall repairs done on vehicle, but same problem returned. The problem occurs on loose gravel road too.

While driving slowly, stopping and picking up speed, applied brakes, and the brake's went straight to the floorboard and locked up. The vehicle has been in the shop four to five times for repairs. Dealer replaced the brakes and the problem has returned.

Symptom: loss of brakes, pedal traveled to the floor due to faulty brake vacuum booster.

Rear driver's side tire fell off, which almost caused an accident. Also brakes malfunctioned.

While making a sudden stop consumer pressed the brake pedal to the floorboard, vehicle continued to still travel.

When brakes were applied in a panic stop the pedal went to the floor ,resulting in extended stopping distance, causing the vehicle to collide. Owner has experienced simular problems with the brakes prior to the collision. The dealer has been notified. Owner wa sissued a citation for failure to control speed to avoid speed. Four days after accident, consumer suffered back pain.

When the brakes are applied the vehicle pulls to the right , the pedal goes to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distances. The dealer hs replaced the abs system and the vehicle still moderately pulls to the right.

Owner claims that he pressed on his brakes and they didn't respond.

Abs brake problems; when applying the brakes on regular road conditions, the brakes locked up and did not stop the truck, causing driver to crash into the vehicle in front. Truck is being repaired at body shop.

In reference to ea94-038, in low speeds, the abs braking system malfunctioned, causing the front wheels to lock up and extended stopping distance.

Owner states that the brakes don't work when applying foot to the brake pedal. The car doesn't even slow down. Owner stops the car with the emergency brake or shifts into nutral.

When pressing the brake pedal heard a humming noise and the brake pedal goes to the floor, and have to coast the truck to a stop.

Applied brakes, pedal went to floor, lost vehicle control, caused crash, dealer found no brake problems.

While driving on wet road driver wa sapproaching a stop sign, upon applying abs brakes, ehicle failed to stop. Went through intersection onto busy highway wher eit was hit by a passenger car. Driver/passenger sustained injuries.

Vehicle shakes when brakes are applied, even at 20 mph. Owner believes abs is faulty.
