Brake Fluid Leak Problems of Chevrolet S10

Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 9 problems related to brake fluid leak (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

Driving normally, pressed the break pedal and it went to the floor; fortunately, I was close to home and no traffic that I managed to roll slowly home. Rusty break lines causing break fluid to leak by driver side door. Tried breaks again- totally not functional. Ironically read article about gm's problem with rusty break lines in their older model trucks. Making it a point to notify NHTSA that this problem affects s-10s as well as the bigger models. Conversations with friends indicate to me that this effects a lot of drivers. All gm truck owners should be alerted to problem. Under different conditions with higher speeds or traffic or pedestrians, this could have turned into a catastrophe.

2 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1994 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 12/20/2013

Was driving my truck down my driveway when I felt the brake pedal drop to the floor. I quickly pumped the pedal but it kept going to the floor board. I stopped barely and saw fluid dripping from under neath the truck. Had a mechanic check it and found the brake lines are all rusted out and just blew apart with no warning! very dangerous!.

3 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 07/22/2013

As I was driving I was approaching a four way stop and applied the brakes any the brake pedal went to the floor. The brakes worked fine for the stop before this one. I tried to pump the brakes and the pedal still went to the floor and the vehicle finally started to slow down, I had to down shift to stop in time. I was able to get teh vehcile to a firestone servic estation down the street. They found one of the main brake line shad corrosion and had rusted through and the brake fluid leaked out as I applied the brakes. I was lucky. I had my 2 year old son in the car at the time. I think my years of driving expierence allowed me to avoid a serious collision. There was no warning about the failure of the brake lines. Also the mechaninc noticed serious rusting of the rear disc backing plates, these will also need replacing. So far the cost is about $500. For just the brake lines. The truck has under 60,000 miles. I hardly drive it.

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

Severe "from the outside in" corrosion to all "hard" brake lines, causing hydraulic failures on two dates (within) two months, result being all the hard brake lines requiring replacement. Cost in excess of $1200, only viable option would have been to scrap vehicle. During hydraulic failures, service rear brakes totally unavailable. Fluid squirting into space. Front brakes partially effective. Not real safe.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 12/21/2010

Four days prior to incident date, I had applied brakes very hard, could be described as a "panic stop". On the days following, I had noticed a small amount of fluid under left front of vehicle when approaching vehicle. Then, after four days, I noticed at a stop light the vehicle began to creep forward and required more pressure on the brake peddle to remain stopped. Brake peddle also went further towards floor. Upon returning home I opened hood and confirmed brake fluid level was low. Took vehicle to shop and was told all brake lines needed replacing because of corrosion. The brake fittings on the lines and bleed screws on calipers were almost nonexistent, nothing but rust. The line itself had split, which had caused the leak. I feel this could have caused a catastrophic incident had I not hastened discovery by having to apply heavy brakes at a slow speed. Replaced all lines and calipers because of corrosion. First time I have had any problem like this in thirty seven years of owning a vehicle of one sort or another.

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 04/18/2010

Brake line failure on 2002 chevy s-10 crew cab. One brake line began leaking. Dealer suggested replacing two lines. When repair was being completed a third brake line began to leak. The parts are not readily available from gm and the dealer said it could take months to get. Waiting to see if a local shop can manufacture the third line. I was told that the lines corroded due to brine used on roads during winter. I saw an article stating that the NHTSA is investigating other gm trucks between 1999 and 2003 for this very same problem but the s-10 is not listed as having an issue. I was fortunate that I caught it early by seeing a puddle of fluid under my truck. The brake light did not come on. I do not feel very confident about the remaining lines that have not been replaced.

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet s-10. While driving approximately 30 mph approaching a stop sign the brake pedal traveled to the floor when engaged. The vehicle continued to travel through an intersection. The contact began to pump and apply pressure to the brake repeatedly until the vehicle came to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The rear brake line corroded causing brake fluid leakage. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired for the malfunction. The failure and current mileages were 87,000. Updated 06/29/10 updated 07/13/10.
