Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 18 problems related to engine cooling system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
At approximately 83,456 miles the heater core broke. I first noticed smell ethylene glycol, it caused (somewhat greasy) fogging of the windshield above the windshield heater vent. Glycol leak directly into the car, causing wet upholstery or carpeting. Coolant sprayed directly into the passenger compartment followed with white colored smoke.

It's a 99 s-10 v6 / 4. 3liter rarely driven, 62,000 miles on the vehicle. No real event leading to the problem. Right now it is leaking radiator fluid from the front of the engine block. I cannot see where the leak is directly as it picks and chooses days to leak and not leak. It hasn't overheated or anything yet. It still has the original radiator fluid in it from when I bought it. I keep telling my mechanic we need to flush or just change the fluid. For over 6 months he keeps saying its fine. It drips onto the skid plate under the engine and drips from there. Never a huge puddle just enough to make a 2 foot diameter wet spot. Nothing has been done yet. Mechanic says to put kars radiator stop leak in it. I have a long road trip coming up in 2 weeks and afraid to take it out of town.

Vehicle purchased 2/23/04 new 2004 s-10 club cab - in Feb 05 was returned due to coolant leak - both eng. Oil cooler hoses replaced. Also fuel gauge was erratic they replaced fuel level sensor in tank replaced mileage 15777. At that time the 4wd was not engaging properly but they could not duplicate the problem so no repair was made. March 9, 2005 motor had a ticking noise - a lifter collapsed and replaced along with the intake gasket. There was also a leak - they found the rear extension housing leaking -the rear drive shaft was removed and seal replaced. Oct 10, 2005 transmission leak and engine noise under acceleration - rear transfer case output seal replaced and engine pressure check. March 30, 2006 check engine light on and exhaust system rattling - thermostat replaced and catalytic converter. Mileage 34,997 June 2007 tail light on right not working - wiring issues repaired twice. November 2007 grinding noise when put into 4wd but once put back into 2wd okay. March 2008 - 4wd making loud noise when engaged and also making continuing noise when in 2wd - found to be transaxle going out. Wiper motor guit - replaced. Mileage now 74,540 this is where I am now driving with the transaxle going out. Love truck size and comfort but to many problems. Will probably go with different brand next purchase but only after much research. Found many complaints on transaxle issue and feel manufacturer. Should take care of this one.

I bought a new Chevrolet s-10 in 2003. From the very first time I drove it I noticed the a/c compressor made a grinding noise which was much nosier than any other compressor I've ever heard on any vehicle. I took it back to the dealer and they supposedly "checked it out", on a couple of different occasions and claimed there was nothing wrong with the a/c. All I know is two months after the warranty expired, my a/c compressor started smoking, blowing heavy clouds of white smoke into the passenger compartment, and the air coming into the passenger compartment was hot. The clutch had went out on the compressor. Now I have a fairly nice truck that I have to bake in when I drive it. This is the first car I've ever owned in my 52 years that ever had this to happen. I certainly feel cheated in that I was at the time still making payments on the vehicle, which I bought brand new and took good care of. Do I have any avenue of recourse? I feel my a/c compressor was defective from day one, as does my brother, who owns a large professional hvac company here in town. Please help me. Thank you.
Consumer had the same problem as the recall on the abs light illuminating. Dealer would not repair because VIN was not included. The vehicle check engine light illuminated and the dealer indicated that the oxygen sensor was bad, the radiator leaked, the head gasket had blown and the water pump leaked.

Mechanics evaluation is that possible failure could be from dex-cool coolant eroding gaskets.
Vehicle was overheating. It was taken to the dealer & coolant was contaminated & flushed. Consumer found a service bulletin that the dealer didn't fully stand by.
The bolt on the drivers seatback sheared causing the back of the seat to fall to a horizontal position. /coolant became rusty causing the radiator to become cloged which caused the water pump to fail.
Vehicle rides great. Just stays in the shop more than on the road! no safety defect indicated in the summary.
Coolant system turns colors and gets griddy. Manual states no maintenance for 5yrs or 50,000 miles. Manufacturer contacted, with case #990212859, nothing done to remedy problem. Problem still exists.
Head gasket failed at 51300 mile on vehicle, causing cooling system of vehicle to drain. Repair cost is approximately $525. Failure seems unusual at this mileage.
Have had problems with the windshield wipers from the beginning. I would be driving in pouring-down rain and the wipers would go out causing me to have to pull over. Right now they do not work at all. I had to work on my brakes the first year and a couple of times thereafter. I recently had to have my air-conditioner done. The latest was my water pump that I fixed myself. The worse was my motor. I had been stalled a number of times till finally it wouldn't go at all. I had it towed to michael holley Chevrolet in lakeland (the town I worked in). They refused to honor my smartcare saying I had not changed the oil. That was not true since I had changed it myself and had it changed also. They wanted over 3000 for a new motor. I am and was still paying on my truck and did not have that much cash. I had to tow it at my mothers and park it. I was able to change the oil and noticed that the Chevrolet dealers had removed the alternator belt and had left it loose. That did not give me any confidence in them. 4 months later my mother's car was totalled and she paid for me to get a motor from an amoco dealer. In September of 1999 my mother was surfing the net and found out that there had been recalls on this vehicle almost from the first and I have never been notified at all. I wrote to the home office in early September but received no answer. I still owe 2 years payments. If I had been traveling on the highway when my motor went out on me something bad could have very well happened. I feel sure that I will never trust in chevy's products again.
Water pump failed.
Consumer states of having problems with cooling system. Mr.
They say my transmission is not one that seizes but it is locking up and bucking for some reason. I have to disengage, then speed up to get it to stop bucking. Any ideas? this has occurred since I bought it used w/limited warranty. I can't afford $65. Everytime I need an estimate (down time) and this might be related to the recall. How can they tell which ones (not just VIN) regarding special torque tool. . Also, what is the life expectancy from manufacturer on the rear oxygen sensors? I had a cracked cylinder head two months after purchasing. They say it was a defect in the water-cooling system. It sucked all my coolant thru engine, blew out back. My sensor in rear was clogged. . . Direct result. . . They say it couldn't have gotten past cat. Convertor, although blue was blowing out my tailpipe. . . They won't fix. I am just curious as to how I can keep from them blowing smoke up my skirt. Thanks, I'm single, female and they saw me coming.
