13 problems related to anti-lock brakes fail have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
At slow speeds the antilock brakes fail dramatically. Your stop is accelerated, until such point that the brakes actually revert to "regular" braking and the antilock brake annunciator light illuminates on the instrument panel. The wheel sensors are less than a year old as I have had both front wheel hubs replaced.
: the contact stated while driving at any speed the antilock brakes fail. There was a NHTSA recall # 05v379000 concerning the antilock brakes however this did not correct the problem. The dealer determined the brake pump ran continually causing the brakes to fail. This was not part of the recall.
: the contact stated while driving on normal road conditions at low speeds, and under normal braking conditions, the anti-lock brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The abs activated, causing extended stopping distance. After the first incident the dealer replaced the rotors. The second time the dealership put brake pads on the rear, cleaned the sensors, and resurfaced the front and rear rotors. However, the problem recurred. The right rear window regulator was replaced. Anti lock brake failure at low speed. Near colision with two garage doors and one resturant. What will it be next time?.
My1999 Chevrolet Silverado 4wd had 48,00 miles on it when problems started. In good weather on dry smooth roads my abs would engage while I was stopping or slowing in a normal manner. Even though this was somewhat surprising I did not feel that the stopping distance was being compromised. Then an incident occured while my wife and I were turning into a parking space at a retail store. As I was turning into the parking space I applied the brakes to solw the vehicle and it felt like I had no brakes, the pedal was very hard to push, felt like it would not move like it was stuck, and there was no braking action. I immediately believed that I was going to strike the vehicle ahead of me and continued to push the brake pedal with greater force. The result is that all of a sudden the brake moved forward and the antilock brakes engaged. The truck stopped before I struck the other vehicle. A good mechanic explained that his experience with chevry truck abs throwing false signals was that the sensors were probably dirty and needed cleaned. As a simple check of the abs I removed the 60 amp fuse for the antilock brake system. My brakes work very well now and I have not had a problem. I have not scheduled an appointment to get the problem fixed and after reading that your organization is now conducting an investigation into problems with Chevrolet truck antilock brake failures I intend to leave the system as it is now until you finish your investigation. Some information on my background. I am 54 years of age, a retired law enforcement officer,26 years service, having reached the rank of chief deputy/undersheriff. I have owned, worked on, and built old cars since I was a teenager.
Anti-lock brake failure on a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado.
While driving at 40mph anti-lock brake system failed, making it hard for consumer to stop. Dealer notified.
Anti-lock motor module fails, causing motor to run constantly even when ignition is off causing danger of fire. Contacted dealer, and was told it is a common problem and parts are not available due to high failure rate. Several Chevrolet truck forums on the internet also revealed a common failure. Repair cost are $800. 00-$900. 00 and it appears many owners are simply pulling the 60 amp. Fuse and driving vehicles in this condition.
Vehicle exhibiting antilock brake module and antilock brake valve failure.
Anti-lock failed to engage. All four wheels locked up resulting in loss of steering control and crashed into ditch. The brakes have performed erratically since it was purchased. Problems include anti-lock engaging on dry roads at low speeds, mushy pedal, pedal oozing to floor at stop lights, and continually poor stopping ability. Problems reported to dealer immediately after purchase and several times after. There very competant staff believe the unit performs like all the others they have seen.
My 1999 Silverado's anti-lock brakes fail intermittently at slow speeds. The symptoms, occurances and frequency of failures are indentical to the ones general motors reported in a press release dated 7/21/99. Several weeks ago, I took my truck to the local Chevrolet dealer. The service department stated that they had not received any bulletins from general motors regarding the type of brake failures I described however, the service manager did state that one other man in town reported the same problem in his 1999 Silverado which almost caused an accident. Please advise how I may resolve this sitiuation with my truck's brakes. Thanks!.
