129 problems related to brake antilock control unit/module have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2004

While driving my 1999 Silverado to work I had to stomp on the brakes to try to avoid hitting a deer. At that moment the abs controller failed and subsequently I collided with the deer. I also have checked various forums on the subject and have found that there have been far too many abs failures on the 1999 chevy Silverados. Gm should be held accountable.

37 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

At 55000 miles the abs light came on. The abs motor continued to run even when engine was turned off. This has occured on numerous occassion and appears to be a safety issue. Nhtsa had lots of complaints on this issued. Is something going to be done to force Chevrolet to have a recall.

38 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

During normal operation, the abs electronic control unit catastrophicallly failed leading to a battery to abs hydraulic pump motor short circuit. The pump motor coninuously ran even with the ignition off unitll the abs fuse was removed. A new control unit was required to restore the system to operation. This unit cost $877. Apparantly the same problem was part of a 2000 model year recall, but did not include 1999 year vehicles. I have found two other 1999 vehicles that experienced the exact same failure. I have the old module which I can make availible for testing.

39 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2004

Erratic abs operation. Burning smell from under truck from abs motor. I wear hearing aids & was not aware motor was running & getting hot.

40 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2004

While driving the abs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on until the vehicle was turned off. Consumer was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the abs module need to be replaced due to worn out parts.

41 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2004

1999 Chevrolet Silverado had catastrophic anti-lock brake failure. Antilock breaks are now totally inoperable. This is caused by a poorly designed control module, and could potentially cause an accident. The same vehicle has a fuel gauge problem in which the fuel gauge works only intermittantly, and is rarly accurate when it does work. How am I supposed to feel safe when driving this vehicle? how can I in good conscience let my wife drive this vehicle, and feel that she is safe? how could gm not recall, and fix these problems?? please answer my questions!!.

42 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2004

One and 1/2 years ago on February 13, 2004, the abs system sounded an alarm, and I removed the 60 amp fuse that controls the abs system. When I returned home, I made contact with ressler's Chevrolet of mandan, nd, and they indicated to me it was the control module, and it would cost over $800 to repair. I still had brakes, and they continue to work to this day. The abs system remains off although my brake light and abs light are both on. At this cost I was not about to repair such a costly item on my own. I feel there should be a recall on this item, because it is a mandated safety product. At this time I have over 124k miles on my 99 Silverado. I am aware of a recall on a wheel sensor corrosion problem on this type of vehicle, but that it would not apply to a vehicle in north dakota. To me this makes absolutely no sense, because I do travel out of the state, and there is a lot of salt used the streets of bismarck nd.

43 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2004

The abs brakes were used for the first time this past winter since I have owned the truck. After they came on, the pump never shut off even after I shut the truck off at work. I had to pull the abs fuse in order for the hydraulic pump to shut down. Two Chevrolet dealers have told me that I need a new computer component (module) and pump that is only sold together. The cost for parts and labor will be over $1,000. As of now, the abs light and parking brake light are on and I do not have the funds to fix this.

44 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2004

Abs electronic brake control module failed--just like all the rest, started truck, heard pump noise from under cab, pulled fuse, almost $1000 to fix on a truck with 57,000 miles on it. General motors needs to make this right with everyone. I'll be buying a Ford or Toyota next time around.

45 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2004

I own a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck with 45480 mileage. On 1/3/04 I noticed a motor noise coming from beneath the drivers door with the ignition turned off. I also noticed the abs warning light was on. To prevent the battery from draining I immediately drove my truck to just brakes. The mechanic informed me the abs module unit has a short. I immediately took my truck to mac haik chevy, katy freeway, houston, texas on a Saturday and was told I would need to bring my truck back on Monday and there was no recall notice on the abs unit. Since I was afraid of damage to my battery and brake system I immediately took my truck back to just brakes to have the problem with the abs system fixed. The abs module was replaced which cost me $ 1,165. 00. The mechanic told me there has been many complaints made of chevy Silverado pickups with malfunctioned abs module units. I have checked the internet and was amazed by the thousands of complaints regarding chevy pickup truck abs module unit failures and replacements. I do not understand why Chevrolet has failed to make such an issue as a recall. With the number of complaints I would think a government organization would force Chevrolet to make a recall and reimburse owners who have become victims to Chevrolet's deaf ears.

46 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2003

1999 Chevrolet Silverado z71, 5. 3l v8, 24,750 miles when incident occurred. While pulling out of my garage, the "abs" light on the dashboard came on and the electronic brake control module (ebcm) ran continuously, even with the ignition key off, and removed. As advised by dealer, I pulled the 60a fuse and the ebcm stopped running. I brought truck in to dealer and was advised that the ebcm module would need replacement at a cost of $1,039. 68 ($807. For the part, $232. 06 labor). From internet research, I discovered this was a very common problem with this year/model truck. Also discovered that many people are driving the vehicle with the abs brakes disabled (ebcm 60a fuse pulled) because of the high repair cost. I fell this is a major safety hazard because the dashboard indicator lights, "abs" and "brakes" are both illuminated all the time once the ebcm module is disabled. This negates the ability to determine if a brake failure may be imminent because the indicator lights are always on. I also feel that if a person were to pull the fuses to these warning lights so they no longer illuminate, as well as disable (pull the 60a fuse) the ebcm module, and subsequently trade the vehicle in (to avoid the expensive repair), the dealer may not discover this fact and could resell the truck with the customer assuming he/she has antilock brakes when in fact they don't. This could result in a severe accident because handling a skid with abs is different that handling a skid without abs. In addition, in this scenario, if the primary brake system were to fail, there would be no indication from the dashboard warning lights, maybe resulting in death or injury from an accident.

47 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2003

Upon starting vehicle abs indicator stayed on. There was problem with abs motor running while driving or when vehicle was shut off.

48 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2003

Consumer heard a noise from underneath the vehicle, and the abs warning light illuminated upon the dashboard once vehicle was parked and turned off. The noise occurred because the abs motor was still running which was due to abs control relay module failure per dealership.

49 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2003

Abs motor continues to run after ignition is turned off. Took to dealer who replaced the module, for a fee of course. Now brakes are very spongy. Needless to say, dealer still has the truck to try and determine the problem. Saw a web-site where several other owners have had the same problem.

50 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2003

Electronic brake control module failure. Abs pump runs continuously as long as the battery is connected and the abs fuse is in place. At this time I have had to disable the abs system to prevent the pump from burning out. Replacement cost quoted by Chevrolet for this failure is $1000. From discourse on the internet this is a very common failure, and therefore should be considered a design flaw.

51 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2003

While driving, the consumer heard a humming sound coming from under the hood. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the consumer was informed that the abs module pump was malfunctioning. The vehicle was repaired at that shop. The abs motor pump wouldn't stop running. The consumer had to unhook the pump to keep the battery from running down .

52 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2003

Abs fault indication. Abs motor runs continuously even with ignition off. Fuse removal or battery disconnect required to correct abs motor runaway.

53 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2003

Abs motor continues to run after vehicle is shut off. Many consumer have elected to have the motor disconnected due to the high cost of repair.

54 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2003

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the abs module. The vehicle was diagnosed and the consumer was told that it needs to be replaced. A new abs module was installed after a 2 day wait for the parts to arrive.

55 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2003

Abs control module failed @ 32,964 miles, causing the abs pump to continually run even when vehicle is turned off.

56 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2003

Brakes abs module 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 30,000 miles abs brake module continuously "running" even with engine shut off. Had to pull 60 amp abs fuse. I see there are 68 of these identical problems out just on this site for this. Is gm doing anything on this?this should be a saftey related issue that cannot just be ignored.

57 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2003

Abs motor runs constantly. Dealer wants $700-$800 to replace module. Found electrical components to be defective and not sufficiently rated for this unit as manufactured by gm. Replacement parts up to required ratings cost only about $40. Gm will not replace components.

58 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2003

The electronic brake control module failed on my 1999 Silverado 4x4 ext. Cab. The vehicle only had 48,500 miles when the part failed. I would think gm should recall the part being it is part of a critical piece of the braking system. To replace the part would cost nearly $1000. 00.

59 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2003

Abs kicks (sound and feel in the brake pedal) in at very low speed (as I came trying to come to a stop) and I loss all braking capability no matter how hard I press the brake pedal. The first time this happened, it caused an accident (hit the vehicle in front of me). I learned that by pumping the brake pedal very fast when this happens, I can regain brake control. This problem is very repeatable. I finally had to pull the abs fuse to disable it. I have already had the abs control modeule replaced once.

60 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2003

1999 Silverado abs sensors were replaced due to failure. The consumer had replaced one sensor prior to learning of the recall because of extended stopping distance. The consumer vehicle is not included in the abs sensor recall 05v-379 because he lives wisconsin.

61 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2003

Abs controller failure, motor running with ignition off.

62 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

Abs system activates at approximately 6 mph at every stop.

63 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

Abs system failed. Warning light is on contantly and sound of motor running under the vehicle. Had to pull 60 amp abs fuse under hood to keep from draining battery.

64 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2003

Dealer states that the abs decoder motor failed. Quoted $700 to repair. Abs light remains on and a humming noise from under the truck when it is shut off. Had to pull abs fuse to stop the humming noise, but now truck does not have abs brakes functional. After doing a simple search on the internet, I have found hundreds of cases of consumers paying $1000 to repair this problem and many more driving the vehicle with the fuse out either unable or unwilling to pay the repair bill. This is a factory defect which should result in a factory recall.

65 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2003

The ebcm of the abs has internal short, causing the anti-lock braking system to stop working. This occurred at 54200 miles. The service writer for thornton Chevrolet lithia springs, GA. Stated this was a problem with the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The estimate to replace the ebcm was $1000. The abs will not work with out the ebcm. This is a major problem with the 1999 Silverado and should be recalled and repaired at GMC expense.

66 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2003

The abs module has just gone out on my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado (with 49k miles). According to research that I have done on the internet I have learned that this is a very widespread problem. All you need to do is do a search on yahoo with the terms "Chevrolet Silverado abs module" and a huge amount of responses come up. Gm is charging between $1000 and $1500 to fix the problem. Since this is such an expensive repair, to solve this problem what most people are doing to solve this problem is pulling the fuse on the abs system. This means that they have no anti-lock brakes and the brake light is constantly on. Therefore there is no way to tell if there is an additional problem with the brakes. I feel that this is a serious safety concern and gm should be forced to address this problem.

67 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2003

While I was 1100 miles away from home on vacation there was a humming noise from underneath my vehicle. After returning home it was taken to a local garage and I was told from there head mechanic that it was a shorted out control module for the abs motor. The mechanic did not even look under the vehicle because he said he was well aware of this product failing due to all of the other 1999 chevy Silverado's that had the same problems. The local mechanic pulled the fuse out and that stopped the motor from running. After that, I called the dealer that I bought the certified vehicle from and they told me that it would cost me a fee to have them look at it, I told them that I had a certified mechanic already look at and they informed me that they needed to have a g. M. Mechanic look at it before they could do anything for me. So after paying $60 for them to tell what I already knew. They told me that I would have to pay $1200 to $1400 for the new part and labor. I am still driving it today without the abs this I strongly feel this is a safety issue, for one the abs light is always lit along with the brake light. So there would be no way of telling if there is more wrong with the breaks if something else would break on them. Also, isn't abs suppose to be a safety device compared to the mechanical breaks of the 80's. G. M. Needs to be responsible for this > recall in order!.

68 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2003

After turning off the engine I noticed a noise coming from under the truck. I took it to a local dealer and was told the abs control module was no good. The mechanic pulled the fuse which shut the motor down. He indicated they have had several vehicles with the same problem but Chevrolet wouldn't authorize the repair when out of warranty. He said the part itself would cost $800. Seems to me any problem with a brake component should be considered a hazard and a recall should be issued on these vehicles.

69 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2003

Anti-lock brake control module failure. My truck has brakes now but no anti-lock because fuse was pulled to keep battery from running down due to control module humming.

70 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2003

The anti-lock brake motor and module go out around 50,000 miles. I know of at least 5 1999 Chevrolet Silverado's that this has happened to in roswell alone. The anti-lock motor will constantly run until you pull the fuse on the system. Once the fuse is pulled you have no anti-lock brakes and the anti-lock and brake light stay on in the dash. To me this sounds like it could cause some accidents. But I have not heard of it causing any.
