My wife backed out of the garage and the abs light came on. She pulled back in to the garage and turned the truck off. She heard a "motor running" sound from under the drivers seat. I believe after researching on the internet that the abs control module has shorted out. Pulled the fuse causing the abs and parking brake lights to stay on. Very disappointed to hear there have been numerous failures of this module with no relief from gm. Was told by the dealer that the repair would cost approx. $1000.

45 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/25/2003

The abs control module went out on my 1999 chevy Silverado z-71 (four wheel disk) with only 60,000 miles. I was told the part would cost $1147. 00 from gm, not including tax or labor. The abs pump and motor continued to run until I disconnected the 60 amp fuse. Of course, now the abs warning light stays on. I have since learned of at least 30 others Silverado owners with the same problem. The 99 model seems to have the most problem. Gm refuses to recall the part, which is very expensive. Many of the other "victims" had less mileage on their vehicles than mine.

Abs motor continued to run and would not shut off. Had to disconnect the 60 amp fuse to prevent battery from running down. Am told that the abs module is defective and will cost well over $1000 of my money to repair - this has not been recalled. This from a chevy with 80,000 miles?? I've discovered that this is not an isolated incident, that this is a common defect with this vehicle. Why isn't this being recalled? what else can we do? m. E.

6 days after replacing tires with same size tires, I got in my 99 chevy Silverado truck and started it up. A strange humming noise started coming from underneath the truck. Upon further investigation I found it was coming from the abs control module. I called the local chevy dealer to verify what it was and they new instantly that it was indeed the abs control module and it would have to be replaced.

52 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Brake anti lock motor runs continuously had to disconnect motor. Now there is no antilock protection for brakes.

53 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/28/2002

We have been having problems with our abs since we purchased the vehicle. At times the abs would suddenly engage when it wasn't warranted (I. E. , in the middle of summer on a dry road, slowly approaching a stop). Then suddenly, backing out of the driveway the abs light came on, along with the buzzing noise. The only way to stop the noise was to pull out the fuse to the abs system. Upon researching the problem on the internet, I've noticed that this is a very common problem among other 1999 chevy Silverado owners. Something is obviously wrong with the abs system in these models. General motors won't do anything about it. The unit costs $1000 to fix, which by the time the defect usually shows up, warranties don't cover. My guess is that by the time someone takes this problem seriously enough to take a look into this and realizes that there is a problem with the abs system in the 1999 chevy Silverado, that someone will have gotten hurt or even worse. . . A death will occur because of it.

54 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/27/2002

I own a 1999 chevy sivlerado. On 12/27/02 I started my vehicle after leaving work and noticed that the abs light went on. After I got home and shut the truck off there was a noise coming from under the truck (sounded like an electric motor running). I drove the truck over to my local chevy dealership and one of the tech's listened to the truck and diagnosed it as the abs module. I told the service manager to call me with a quote for repair. He called about an hour later and said that it was the abs module, and it would cost around $1000 to repair. I declined repair as I was told that the brakes would function fine by just pulling the abs fuse (the abs wouldn't work, but the brakes would work fine). Trying to negotiate with dealer and/or gm on repair cost. Truck has 60000 miles, so they are saying "out of warranty". I said "stand behind your product!" saw these other instances of the same problem on this web site, so I thought I would add mine. Looks like they have a problem with the abs on this vehicle and they are not taking care of it.

55 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/24/2002

Abs module shorted out and now the antilock brakes are inoperable. This is a known problem by generals motors. Dealership said they replace several weekly. Also, 2000 Silverado`s have the same problem ,and I beleive module they have been recalled for a new module. Told general motors this and all they could say was "but sir yours is a 1999 model isn`t it". Nhtsa please help us consumers . We are driving trucks without antilock brakes. How safe could this be? this is definitely a safety issue.

57 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/15/2002

Abs pump continues to run after ignition is turned off. I called norman frede Chevrolet in houston texas and the service technician told me to take the 60 amp fuse out from the distribution center under the hood and bring it in. He also told me that this is a $600. 00 part alone. He said this is a common problem with 1999 Silverados. If its so common, how come there isn't a recall on this yet. It still isn't fixed.

58 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/10/2002

With under 60,000 miles the abs failed allowing the module motor to run constantly. Chevy mechanic advidsed pulling the 60 amp fuse as the cost for the module was over $500. Alos told to be careful drivng on wet pavement as the braking would not be as safe w/o the abs sytem working. Contacted chevy and negotiated the replacement of the abs module, however upon agreeing to pay for 1/2 the cost the chevy folks raise the initial $500 dealer quote to $899 which would not include the labor. As the safety is less when on wet payment I am l;ooking for a recall of this abs system. The chevy mechainc say it is a common problem wiht the ussual course of action being to pull the fuse and run with the brake warning light on. As I have leased this vehicle I have also been told by the leasing company I will have to repair the problem before it is accepted back when the lease expires. I have copiies of all the coreespondance with the chevy folks itf you would like to see them.

59 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/01/2002

Failure of electronic abs control module. Got out of vehicle and noticed there was the sound of an electric motor running even after the ignition was turned off. Found out that it is over $1,000 to have fixed. Just so happens that the dealer keeps several of these in stock because of the numerous failures. Problem was that mine was out of warranty by around 5,000 miles. Do you think gm would offer to cover this. . . Of course not. What a joke.

60 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/10/2001

2 months after 36,000 mile warranty on a 1999 Chevrolet siverado, anti-lock brake pump fails. Called the dealership called Chevrolet and no calls recalls or concerns on this matter. It is fine if this was a single incident, but when you know of two other owners that have had the same problem on the same vehicle and live in the same county? please any help????? or is this not a problem?.

61 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/01/2001

When consumer turned off ignition and exited vehicle, he heard a noise coming from engine area, indicating that a system was still operating. Dealership examined vehicle, and determined that control module for anti-lock braking system had failed, which resulted in continued operation. Replacement of module was needed. 62 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/02/1999

Anti lock brake system - I have documentation starting from 2 months after the purchase of my 99' chevy z71 complaining of the brake system. Every time I took the vehicle to dealer, he said "OH, that's normal". I have taken to the dealer numerous times over the course of time for all sorts of defects with the brakes being the biggest problem. The last time I took it was for the anti lock brakes was one month prior to the warranty going out. Once again, "OH, that's normal". Once my warranty expired, so did my anti lock brakes. Even with documentation, the dealer would not fix it and Chevrolet said I had to go through the dealer. I have a stack of documentation from where this vehicle has been in the shop for malfunctions as well as pretty much everything that can go wrong with a vehicle. I am upset because this is a problem that need fixing from the start and the dealer or Chevrolet would make it good.

63 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/26/1999

Normal driving conditions with consistent vehicle maintainence. The abs module failure occurred without warning. The braking system in the vehicle seemed to lose power and required more than normal braking time. I took the vehicle in for repairs immediately at a cost of $1,000. I was told it is due to a faulty part that general motors is aware of but refuses to recall due to the 750,000 1999 Silverados on the road. At a part cost of $700 you can easily do the math. A recall must be in order. These heavy trucks are not safe on the road if not a class action lawsuit is in order.

64 Air Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/11/1999

At 38000 miles my abs control module failed. Two local dealers informed me that gm has had a lot of problems with the abs module at a cost of $1200. 00. I called gm customer assistance and got no assistance. I would like someone to look into the abs module failure problem.
