1 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/16/2005

Intermittent brake slippage was noticed. Brakes would engage, then actually felt like they weren't holding, significantly increasing stopping distance. Problem worsened quickly and within a few days happened on almost every stop. Repair shop checked rotors and pads, and declared them okay. They suspected something with abs, found at least one abs recall notice, and suggested repair at the dealership. Dealership determined that both front wheel speed sensors were bad, and replaced both at a cost of nearly $600. Brakes function correctly now. Vehicle is 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and problem follows symptoms and remedy associated with NHTSA pe05020.

5 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/16/2005

When slowing down to stop, the anti-lock brakes take over and the vehicle will slide or become unable to be stopped. On more than one occasion, I have nearly hit someone or a parked vehicle, as I am unable to control the braking mechanism of my vehicle. It is only a matter of time before I cause an accident or become involved in an accident due to this problem. At this time, there does not appear to be a formal recall, but only an investigation. On a daily basis, I transport my family, and fear that I will have an auto accident that may cause them or someone else harm. I am looking into having the sensors replaced, and awaiting an estimate to do so. I would appreciate anything that could be done to rectify, what I and many others feel is a vehicle defect.

6 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/08/2005

2001 chevy Silverado z71 4x4 abs is being activated at low speed causing loss of braking.

7 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/05/2005

This complaint is in regard to my 2000 chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 and its poor brakes. At 40,000 miles just over a year ago, all of its disc rotors were replaced due to excessive wear by my certified mechanic. A complaint was filed with gm customer service at that point. At 50,000 miles, a small leak was found on my rear caliper and vast, significant corrosion was noted on all 4 calipers. Due to safety issues, all 4 calipers were replaced by the same mechanic. I continue to experience further braking difficulties. As I approach a stop, my braking distance will increase at 5mph or less and it feels like hesitation through the pedal and a chattering. This has caused me to stop further into intersections than anticipated and many near- misses for rear end accidents. No warning lights have been activated and no diagnostic coding is evident when tested. I brought the truck to a local gm dealership who claimed to know nothing of problems with the abs in my truck's model or year. Upon test drive the gm mechanic felt it was the abs sensor and corrosion causing the problem, therefore the wheel assembly and sensor were replaced as one unit at cost of $520 paid by me.

8 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

The antilock brakes activate at low speeds on my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado and I read an article in the newspaper that the NHTSA was looking into this. This has occurred many times and the worst was when I was travelling with my wife and daughter and came upon a stop light. I applied the brakes and was almost to a stop when the antilock brakes activated. Luckily there wasn't a vehicle ahead of me as I couldn't stop as I should have and ended up part way into the intersection. I plan on contacting my mechanic to see what is required to get this repaired.

10 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/28/2005

When I press the brake to stop the vechile at unpredictable times the abs kicks in and the truck does not stop. It has casued several close calls and 1 smack into a garage door. I took to my mechanic and he said this was a common problem on this truck and it was the wheel speed sensors. This truck has only 24,000 miles on it but is out of warr due to age. Dealer wants $400 to fix, but it appears based on my mechanic and reports read on internet this is a big problem and gm should do something about it.

11 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/28/2005

I have a 2000 chevy Silverado. The anti-lock brakes are malfunctioning at low speeds. The truck has a hard time stopping on dry pavement, the anti-lock brakes activiate. From the information I have and talking with other chevy truck owners the problem is related to the wheel speed sensors. I pulled the fuse on the anti-lock brakes, now the truck stops fine. This problem really concenrns me. I underestand, based on a detroit news article, that this problem was recalled in canada. Why is this not being recalled in michigan and other similiar states that used salt in the winter time? based on the article, the cause to the problem is the corrosion caused by the salt. Thank you,.

12 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

19 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/30/2005

I am responding to the current investigation of the braking problem involving the abs sensor. I have a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. Vehicle was purchased new in Jan. 01. I took the vehicle to the dealer on 11/06/03 for the abs activation at low speeds when braking. The dealer removed front calipers and rotors and abs sensors and cleaned rust away from the mounitng surface for the sensor per bulletin #02-05-25-006a. Problem recently returned when braking. You get a pulstation kicking back on break pedal and are unable to stop. Last week I almost ran into front of a hollywood video store when pulling up. I had to press the emerengcy brake to stop. I was prepared because it also happen a couple of days before in another parking lot at the fitness gym. I replaced the abs sensor (driver's side) myself on 5/2/05. The cost of this was $120. 55. 20 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/01/2005

1. I own a 2002 chevy Silverado. The antilock brakes were coming on when I would come to a slow stop or the end of a stop. Most of the time they would just grind but a couple of times the brakes failed. 2. The first time they failed I ran into my garage door and just dented it a little. The second time I was in a parking lot and smashed into a parked car. I did do a police report on that one. Through the fenton police department (2005-001636). 3. I took the truck to the dealer who told me the antilock brake sensor had corrosion on it and was cleaned for $250 bucks. That is all they did.

21 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/17/2005

I have a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 extended cab, currently the abs breaks are going into abs mode when I try to stop on any surface including dry at low speeds (under 10mph). This is causing my breaking distance at low speeds to increase as to correct the problem I have to let off the breaks and then mash them. Exactly the behaviour that abs is supposed to negate. I haven't done anything to correct the issue yet but since it seems to be getting worse, will pull the abs fuse to disable that function.

22 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/22/2005

The abs system on chevy trucks can create an unsafe operating condition. During a slow stop, below 5mph, the abs activates and does not allow the vehicle to stop. Especially dangerous when stopping in parking lots where people may be in front of the vehicle. The fault is caused by either 1) failure of whell speed sensor or 2) rust build up on the wheel speed sensor mounting. There are no warnings from the vehicle when the fault will occcur or does occur. Thus, there is not way to adequaltely predict when to service the system and avoid the potential fault. It is a common problem. I know this by visiting the chevytruck. Com forums where many people are discussing the issue. Many people have reported near disasters due to the issue. In my opinion, there is a high probability of someone being seriously injured or killed due to this failure. If you replace the defective wheel speed sensor or clean te mounting flange, you may resolve the short term problem. My issue is with the design because if you correct the problem, you have no warning device to inform you when the fault will reinitiate. You only learn of the fault when it actually happens. By then you could have seriously injurred or killed someone. I have reported this problem to Chevrolet customer service on 2-25-05. It is a problem on both of my chevy trucks. A 99 suburban and a 2002 Silverado. Both have approximately 65,000 miles.

23 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Abs brakes activate in wet weather for the first 5 minutes of driving.

26 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/20/2005

Anti lock occured on left front wheel causing right front wheel to lock and pull to right causing slide into pole and damage to front end. As vehicle is stopping abs activates in any instance, vehicle pulls to right. Disconnection of left front wheel sensor connector was neccessary to prevent reoccuring false activation.

27 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/08/2005

Just joining the massess of gm truck owners with faulty hub assembly abs sensors. 2000 chevy Silverado - 50,000 miles (problem started at approx 45,000) lack of ability in slow speed stopping created some near miss situations with garage doors and people/other autos in parking lots. Temporary solution was to pull the fuse, a whole lot less danger on the road without any abs than with it.

28 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

I have a 1999 chevy Silverado that has been experiencing a problem with the abs systems. When you get below 10 miles an hour it starts acting up. . It doesnt want to stop. Sometimes you have to let off and stomp them a couple of times to get them to stop. . You dont know when its going to act up either. It may go a few times without a problem then the next thing you know it starts doing it. I try not to drive it and when I do its close by. I have taken it to a shop and they said it was the abs wheel speed sensor . Then they said that they had seen on the news where there is a concern with this problem. . And told me I should wait abit if I could because they may have a recall and that this could be expensive. .

29 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/21/2004

Vehicle was take to taylor Chevrolet on 12/27/04 to be diagnosed. This resulted in replacing the left front hub assembly because sensor was defective and could not be cleaned or replaced. Cost of repair $463. 00 with only 35,506 miles on the vehicle.

30 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/09/2004

Abs brakes are not working on my truck. Huge cost to fix them. Currently I have pulled the fuse on the abs brakes. With only 60,000 miles I shouldn't have to spend over $1,000 to have brakes fixed. Abs brakes kick in on totally dry roads at slow conditions and cause you to possibly hit someone.

31 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/08/2004

A recall was issued unwanted low speed activation of the abs. Prior to the recall I had already had the problem fixed and requested reimbursement after the recall was issued. I was advised that my truck was not included in the recall based solely on the fact that it is currently registered in maryland and not registered in the specific states listed. This truck was purchased brand new in PA and was registered in PA, then OH exclusively until Feb. 04 when the truck was registered in maryland as a result of a relocation from ohio. I am simply stunned that gm is excluding me from the recall. This is unacceptable and bottom of the barrel customer service.

32 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/03/2004

While applying the brake pedal at low speeds brakes failed. Vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that abs wheel sensor needed to be replaced. The consumer owns a 1999 chevy Silverado and a 2001 tahoe with the same problem. The consumer stated that the vehicle moves abour 4 feet farther than intended after brake is applied. No warning lights on dash to let the driver know the brakes are having problems.

33 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/02/2004

Low speed activation of the antilock brakes resulting in unsafe braking conditions. Despite widespread problems with my model and several others, gm was unwilling to assist in a repair exceeding 1,000. 00.

34 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/20/2004

On a couple of previous occasions, the abs system in my 2002 chevy Silverado 4x4 extended cab engaged on me at while braking at stop lights on my way to work. This caused my braking distance to double or even triple on hill stops. I was very upset at these faliures in the braking system and immediately took it to the closest service station to be looked at. Because they were not a gm service center, they had no knowledge of this known problem with the abs speed sensors in the Silverado's so there was nothing they could do to fix this. I then set out to my chevy dealership after work to get this looked at. On my trip to forest city Chevrolet in portland, maine I was exiting the highway and making my way down the twisting offramp to the stop light when I applied the brakes, the abs system kicked in at about 20 mph! (not the 5 to 10 mph as officially suggested by gm) I did everthing in my power and reach to stop the vehicle before crashing into stopped traffic ahead of me including applying the parking brake. This was the scariest moment in my 14 years of driving. I immediately pulled the abs system fuse to disable this disaster of a braking system and continued to the dealership. From there I was charged 70 dollars for a "diagnoses" of faulty abs speed sensors and another 400+ dollars to replace them. What really hurts me is that they have known technical bulletins about this known dangerous problem and do not notify the owners like myself to warn us of possible brake failure!! then to charge me almost 500 dollars to fix the problem although my vehicle was barely 2000 miles out of warranty!! and they had a ton of these speed sensors in stock so whatever gm is claiming this issue as being extremely widespread is false, it is happening a lot. I was so frightened that this would happen to me again, I traded in my truck.

35 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/01/2004

Since last summer, I have experienced a problem with the abs on my 2000 chevy Silverado. This is the same problem that is currently being investigated by the NHTSA. While stopping, the antil-lock brakes activated on all surfaces (even on smooth, dry, pavement) below 10mph which incresases stopping distance.
