Failure Date: 10/07/2014

Hello im reporting a problem I have noticed about rust on the under bodies of the chevy and GMC pick ups. It is a widespread problem and needs to be resolved. There are too many vehicles reporting this problem to make it a coincidence. I myself have this problem where my frame has now cracked for the second time. People are complaining more and more and our safety is at stake. Please whatever can be done to bring gm to recognize this problem can and will save a lot of lives as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars. Thank you.

38 Body problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

Here is a brief history of the issues involving the 1012 Chevrolet Silverado lt texas edition after the purchase date of September 3, 2012. First, I noticed that it has increasingly become more difficult to open the front passenger window from the driver side master control unit around 2014. Now, I have to press hard several times to open the window. Second, the outside moldings of the door panels are falling off starting in mid-2014. Third, I have started to hear popping noises coming from the ball joints when the steering wheel is turned to the left or right at a very low speed starting the beginning of 2014. These issues were reported to the Chevrolet customer service at the gm headquarters in August 2015. On September 4, 2015, the truck was finally diagnosed by the Chevrolet dealership service department that sold the pickup. The invoice dated September 4, 2015 indicates the lower ball joints worn with play, door moldings falling off, and the driver's master switch shorted.

39 Body problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/18/2014

While moving from a stop the truck sometimes lags in acceleration which may cause the operator to depress the accelerator further than required to enter traffic. This condition also may cause a short acceleration delay when pulling into traffic that can be unexpected by the operator. I have been surprised many times by this operator disconnect accelerating from a stationary position. After driving my new truck 900 miles I investigated the accelerator pedal assembly bracket to find that the entire bracket is not properly fastened structurally to the fire wall by design. I inspected my truck on 12/23/14 and found this problem, the accelerator pedal bracket flex on my truck looks to be ~3/4" to 1" before the electronic linkage engages. The pedal tip-in engagement has to flex the mounting bracket before the electronic acceleration switch engages. I can't believe the gm engineering and design team's would approve of such a flimsy mounting bracket for this important part of basic motor vehicle operation. I feel over time and usage that this bracket may completely fail as currently designed. I could shim and install additional hardware to correct this safety issue, but I feel this design issue should be addressed with gm before someone has a crash or worst.

41 Body problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

On the way to work on Monday morning, sept 1st, 2014 as my husband approached a stop light he noticed the vehicle at the light backup lights come on. He thought they may have pulled too far up under the stop light and were just going to back up a little bit so he applied his brakes. The driver of the other vehicle proceeded to push the gas and slam in to the front of my husband's truck then drive off. My husband proceeded to the nearby pilot fuel stop looked around to see if the other vehicle was there then called the police to file a report. After that he went on to work a few miles down the road. Worked his shift, stopped and put a little gas in his truck and drove the 9 miles home. Parked in the drive went in the house and came back out a few minutes later there was smoke then fire coming from around the front tire of the truck. It soon became engulfed in flames despite the efforts of the local fire department. The truck was a total loss.

44 Body problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

On approximately Jul 19, 2014, the hill descent mode failed on my 2014 Silverado 1500 as I was driving down a mountain in the state of washington. The truck took off when this failed and I had to manually use my brakes in order to avoid crashing into any vehicles ahead. I took the vehicle in to the dealer who, and I quote 'they couldn't duplicate the concern and there were no codes stored in the system'. Only four miles were put on the truck while it was in their shop. How can you possibly test this failure if you didn't drive it in the mountains? next major issue was the onstar antenna began to leak into the cab, soaking the headliner, the floor and leaking into the dash where all the electrical components are. Dealer 'didn't have the part to fix this' and it continues to leak to this day. And finally, having noticed all the posts about rust underneath this truck, I too, discovered that the 'wax' coating had deteriorated and major rust issues had developed. I have owned Chevrolet trucks for nearly 20 years and I have never, ever found them to be the piece of junk this vehicle is. The hill descent mode is a serious and potentially deadly problem. These issues have been reported to the ceo of gm in a detailed letter with pictures to prove everything that is wrong with this truck. Caution*****before you shell out fifty grand for this truck, read each and every post on this website in order to make an informed decision.

45 Body problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado

47 Body problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

On Friday may 23, 2014, I was backing an empty boat trailer down my private boat launch with my new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup. When I put the transmission into reverse with my foot on the brake the engine suddenly revved up, started spinning wheels, and shot down the ramp hitting three bulkhead pilings eight feet apart, finally wedging the truck into the last piling and stopping before going into the water. The incident lasted less than five seconds and my foot never left the brake as witnessed by a third party verifying the brake lights never went off. I feel obligated to report this to both Chevrolet and the national highway traffic safety administration. Had this occurred in a public parking area, serious injuries and damage to other vehicles could have resulted. An insurance claim has been made, and after repairs have been completed, the vehicle will be taken to my Chevrolet dealer for analysis for possible defects.

48 Body problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/13/2014

Parked facing upslope. The truck slipped out of park gear and rolled downhill backwards, knocking over owner. Finally hit a tree and stopped. Insurance declared it totaled.

49 Body problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/22/2014

When I left our garage I noticed that the red brake system light was on. Usually my husband drives this to work but we switched vehicles because I needed to haul a trailer to help move my daughter. I have only drive this vehicle one other time so I was unfamiliar with how it handled. I noticed that I had to press hard to stop but thought that was how it handled. I drove over 120 miles with it this way, I didn't know what was wrong with it, by the time I pulled into our drive, I could barely stop the vehicle. My husband came out to release the trailer out back. He got in and said, "what's wrong with the brakes?" I said, "what do you mean?" he told me I had no brakes and I could have been killed. It was a near miss incident but I have found (as a former safety manager) that those near miss incidents often show a root cause) that in the future means something. Please let me know if there ever is a class action suit to recoup the money we will have to pay to have this repaired.

51 Body problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/31/2014

Truck was taken to dealer for regular maintenance, when raised on the hoist the frame started to collapse and brake. Service people pointed out the problem and told me and to consider getting a new truck and advised I probably should not drive this one anywhere as it could brake apart. They stated they haven't seen this in a truck maintained as this one has been. In looking on-line I now see this is a very common problem in 1999 to 2002 Silverado's, with 100's of complaints. Gm won't talk about it and states any recall has to come from your agency. This is serious, not sure if any injuries are attributed to this (yet) but there surely will be. I can't believe this is not be looked at with the number of on-line complaints and reports.

52 Body problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/18/2014

On Tuesday March 18, 2014 I was driving a 2013 chevy Silverado and rear ended a chevy tahao at approximately 20 mph without hitting my brakes. Conditions at the time were clear and dry although very windy. I was the only passenger in my truck. I was wearing my seatbelt. I hit the steering wheel with my chest. The onstar system called to say they could see I was in an accident and help was on the way. I exchanged info with the other driver and returned to my vehicle. The seatbelt was in the extended position and would not extend further or retract. On the display panel it had an 'airbag deployed' icon and message 'service airbag'. My insurance company gave me a auto repair shop to go to for an estimate, however, the shop told me they would not touch the vehicle until a gm representative investigated the system first as they felt the seatbelt should have prevented me from hitting the steering wheel. I called gm and spoke with walter in customer service. He arranged to have a 'third party' investigator come and do a interrogation of the system and arranged for a loaner vehicle. Raytheon representative 'jeff" called me Sunday March 20 and stated he was to interrogate the system and would contact me from the airport when he got to town on Wednesday March 23. On Wednesday March 23 I called jeff to see if he was in town and he stated he was at the airport 'leaving' town, he had done his investigation and determined everything worked like it should. I asked him if I was supposed to hit the steering wheel and he stated he did not agree or disagree.

56 Body problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/19/2013

Since I purchased this truck in 12/2013, the rubber door gaskets develop a very strong chemical smell when truck sits in the sun, or when weather is warm, which is most of the time here in florida. It smells bad enough to cause nausea, which is a distraction when driving the vehicle. I would like to know if there is a remedy to this problem.

57 Body problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/13/2013

I brought my truck in for a vibration problem to the dealership that I purchased it from. The truck was muddy and the dealership told me that it was from all the mud on the truck. But they did not even wash the truck and test drive it. Then I brought it into a different dealership to have it check for the same thing. They forced balance my truck and they found something so they rotated my drive shaft 180 degrees and said it was fixed. About 30 days later it started again and brought it back to be checked. They forced balance it again and found a bad tire so they replaced the one tire while the other three tire had about 12,000 miles on them. So it happened again so brought it again for the 4th time for the same problem. They again forced balanced the truck and could not pin point the problem so the service manger took a 2015 Silverado 1500 and took off the tires and rims and put it on my truck. Not didn't fix it so they put all new shocks and strouts on it and told me it was fixed and they wanted to bring the truck to my home and I declined and I wanted to test drive the truck. I drove the truck with the service manager and found that it didn't change anything. So I asked him that I wanted an appointment with the district manager of gm. So when I meet with him in the service managers office with the service manager. The first thing out of the district managers was I am here to help you and the showed his true self. Within the first 9 minutes he asked me how I would fix the problem and then he told me to hire an attorney. Because that was the only way you are going to get the truck bought make from gm. After I left the office after 9 minutes I tried to make an appointment at the dealership I bought the truck and I had an appointment the following day. The same day the dealership informed that night that they couldn't see or work on my truck I called gm customer service.

58 Body problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/12/2013

The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that the frame was corroded and cracked. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 235,000. Updated 12-26-13 the consumer stated the truck had a cracked frame, just in front of the rear spring mount on the drivers side.

59 Body problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

After unlocking the manual door lock on the truck the interior door handle would not open the door. The lock was disconnected from the interior locking mechanism, effectively trapping me in my vehicle. At this time I unrolled the window and used the key in the outside door to try to unlock the door, but the lock was jammed and I was unable to leave my vehicle using either the inside or the outside handle or locks or the driver door. I was forced to exit the vehicle from the passenger side door. This is a recurring problem and seems to occur most often after rainfall or a car wash. This is a serious safety concern in the event of a collision, car fire or water crash or other emergency that could potentially be fatal and should be recalled to protect people from being trapped in their vehicles. It is also notable that consumer reports has listed "locks and latches" as a common problem area for a 2009 Silverado. I contacted a Chevrolet dealership and they refused fully cover the repair cost, which was well over $250 and they stated that the "door lock actuator was defective". The corporate gm phone call center was not helpful and told me it would not be fully covered because my vehicle was just out of bumper to bumper warranty. I believe this should be recalled to protect consumers.

60 Body problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/28/2013

First I went to open my front passenger door from the outside and the chrome door handle came off the truck in my hand. Approximately a week later, the driver door handle also came off in my hand as well. Both instances rendered the door inoperable from the outside of the vehicle.

61 Body problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/30/2013

Spare tire hoist bracket broke and spare tire was swinging loosely under rear of truck. Further investigation revealed several stress cracks in bracket surrounding the bolt hole. If tire bracket would have broke off tire would drop to pavement and become a road hazard. Sources at dealer indicated they had no bulletins on this item but knew of some people who had lost their spare tires. I still have the parts.

64 Body problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/23/2013

On 6/23/13 my father was making a left turn over a 4 lane street. He was hit by a 2008 Nissan rouge going between 37-40mph on the drivers side door. My fathers truck was in motion at 4-6mph. The truck suffered extensive damage, and my dad passed away hours later at the hospital due to internal bleeding of pelvic area. The trucks drive shaft was cut in a half. The truck has a 5 star side crash safety rating, I do not understand how a car that was not even speeding crumpled the truck that badly. The frame of the truck was pushed so far back the gas and brake pedal were one.

65 Body problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

I live in connecticut and I have a 2000 chevy Silverado k1500 ext cab 5. 3l truck with 198000+ miles on it. The truck has been garaged just about its whole life since I bought it brand new. Last week my wife was driving the truck to the store. While coming to a stop sign just down the street the brakes failed. Fortunately she was coming to a stop and wasn't going fast with no one in front of her. She walked back to the house and I went down to find that a brake line had busted behind the drivers wheel on the frame rail before it goes over the frame to the abs module. I had the truck towed back to my house and put in the garage to inspect it. I am amazed on how much that all of the brake lines are rusted. Some areas of the line when I touched it just fell apart in my hands. I have been hearing that just about everyone I know who owns 1999-2003 chevy trucks are having brake line failing due to cheap steel rusted lines. While I was under the truck I also noticed that one of the cross members that support the right rear shock plus the gas tank is supported off of is rusted with only half a tube left. Plus just about all of my gas lines have serious rust on them. My other issue is that the rocker panels on both sides of the cab are rusted threw to a point that you can stick your hand in them. When is chevy going to get off their butt and do something about this. The brake lines, fuel lines & cross member corrosion are safety issues that should be dealt with before people get hurt or worst killed.

66 Body problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/16/2013

The contact also mentioned that she was able to open the door from the inside while the child lock was activated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the child lock needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 50,000.

67 Body problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Had to replace brake lines all the way to master cylinder and fuel lines from extensive corrosion also throughout the frame and mounting brackets for shocks and leaf springs. Abnormal rust for any vehicle that was washed and taken care of accordingly.

68 Body problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/21/2013

I was driving along the interstate and traffic abruptly stopped in front of me. When pressed on the brake pedal, I slowed down a little, but then the pedal went to the floor, and I rear-ended the car in front of me. After the police report was filed, I got it to a chevy dealer and they said that one of the steel brake lines from the master cylinder to the front passenger side was rusted and had burst, spilling all of the brake fluid. The wreck damaged the front passenger side bumper, and broke the grille and the headlight support bracket.
