A chevy Silverado tailgate releases at the latch and drops without provocation. The consequences are a sudden loud noise and the dropped tailgate opens releasing cargo onto roadway. This failure is not precipitated by any unusual road surface or bump.

2 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/14/2006

Tailgate straps failure. Man was standing on tailgate preparing to jump down, and both straps snapped at the same time. There was no notice that the straps were worn or failing. Vehicle is used as show truck, not work truck, and is in excellent condition. Failure is as described in your recall 04e067000, NHTSA action ea04005 and gm defect notice 04v-129, exception for pre 2000 vehicles.

3 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

My cable snapped and the tailgate of my 1999 chevy Silverado when loading firewood. I also bent the hinge. I understand there is a recall on this. When I called about it I was told my truck/VIN# was not included in the recall. If GMC has identified a problem they should not eliminate some trucks.

4 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Yesterday I was standing on my tailgate to strap down the lumber on my overhead rack. Suddenly the tailgate collapse down and slams into my bumper. I was shaken but not hurt. I was looking at my tailgate to determine what had just happened, I noticed that both cables that hold up the tailgate were broken apart in the center of each of them. They looked like they had rusted. When the tailgate hit the bumper it caused a dent in the back of the tailgate.

: the contact stated while standing on the tailgate of the vehicle broke causing minor injuries. There is a NHTSA recall, # 06v066000 concerning the tailgate: hinges: attachments. The vehicle has the same problem as indicated in the recall; however is not included in the recall due to the VIN and the year of the vehicle. The dealer has been notified however, the vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer has been alerted.

6 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/12/2005

Contact stated he and 2 others jumped on a tailgate to transport a couple of feet away. The cables on the driver's side tailgate broke, causing the tailgate to go down. This , in turn, it caused him to fall out, hitting the pavement. Injuries were sustained.

Contact stated that the passenger side tailgate cable broke. There a tailgate cable recall 04v129000 on other years of this model vehicle. The dealer and manufacturer informed him that this vehicle was not included in the recall.

I have had to replace tailgate cable twice on my 1999 Silverado. I have been informed that there is a recall on 2000 and later Silverado's. Mine is the new body style which is identical to the 2000 and later models. Something is not right here. This is a safety hazard.

Bought a 2004 chevorlet 2500hd used. One week after purchase the tailgate bezel trim piece was lost on the highway. Then a few months later the speedometer dies on quits working, or works intemittently sometimes sticking.

Both straps on the cables that hold up the tailgate broke. A recall was issued, but this vehicle was not included due to VIN. . Contacted the dealer and called GMC, the did not offer any assistance, and the dealer charged the consumer to have it fixed. The cables broke on September 11, 2005 and they repaired it on September 19, 2005.

The caller had galvanized support cable for the tailgate brake. There was a recall on the year after and she felt it should include her vehicle. . Dealer said it was the same part as in the recall. Manufacturer offered no help.

Placing a 150 pound load on the tailgate caused the cables to break. These exact same faulty cables are included in a recall for 2000 through 2004 trucks, but for some reason, not the same model of 1999 truck.

Cables used to support tailgate suddenly snapped while 2 average adult males were sitting on the gate. Upon inspection it was noted that the cables appeared to be rusted and corroded inside the protective coating.

My daughter used my vehicle last year. She opened the tailgate to put a bag of clothes in the bed of my 1998 Chevrolet Silverado and when she tried to close the tailgate the latches would not engage to keep the tailgate closed. After several attempts at closing the tailgate it finally engaged and stayed closed. As she began driving the latches again released and the tailgate fell open. Both support cables broke as described in the NHTSA campaign id number : 06v066000 for 1999 and 2000 Chevrolet Silverados and the tailgate fell off of the vehicle. I had to replace the support cables but the latches still do not hold and the tailgate continues to fall open on a regular basis. Just today 3/11/05 the tailgate fell open 5 times while I was driving.

04 v 129 000/tailgate support cable: while opening the tailgate, both support cables broke and the tailgate drop completely down. No injury was reported. The dealer was notified. The dealer informed the consumer that their vehicle VIN # was not included in the recall.

Recall campaign 04v129000 concerning tailgate support cable. Consumer received notification from the manufacturer in regard to this recall. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and was informed that hew would have to repair the defect himself. The service technician fixed one cable, and handed the second cable to consumer, telling him that he would have to fix it by himself. Also, they claimed they were not a body shop, and he would have to get this fixed on his own.

I parked my 99 Chevrolet Silverado z71 outside for 2 evenings. When I came out to my truck 2 days later, I realized that I did not close the tailgate. But then I noticed that the tailgate was hanging down further than it should be, resting on the bumper of the truck. It turns out that both of the cables that hold the tailgate in place had sheared off and dropped the tailgate onto the bumper. The cables had rusted straight through and caused damage to the tailgate because of it. I am currently in the process of replacing the broken cables, and will save the cables for future reference.

Consumer received recall 04v129000 for the tailgate, made an appointment dealer, and upon arriving the parts were not available. Consumer went home. A second recall letter stating the recall for the vehicle had not been performed. Consumer made an appointment once again, took the vehicle to dealer, and once again was told the part was not available.

Recall campaign: the consumer tried to contact the dealer on several occasions to have recall the recall (04v-129000) on the support cable fixed on his two trucks. The dealer indicated that the parts were not available. Reference consumer letter 10109434 regarding the other 2003 Chevrolet 2500 also owned by the complainant. The consumer feels the manufacturer has had enough time to provide the dealer with the parts.

The tailgate cables failed constantly. The tailgate straps broke and bent the hinges. Both hinges were replaced and a new tailgate was installed. The left rear tail gate broke. The tail gate fell on the bumper and bent both hinges on the right side scratching the tail gate. The plastic seal leaked. The cable was rusted. The right strap had too much slack and was not holding any weight on the tail gate.

Opened tailgate and both support cables snapped, one after the other. Had some one been standing or moving equipment on the tailgate, serious injury may have occurred. Because the cable was rubber coated, you were not aware of the problem until failure. The deal indicated that failures of these cables are well known, and 200-2004 trucks were recalled, however 1999 (new body style) with same tailgate arrangement were not recalled. With both cables failing within minutes of each other why did gm not recall like designed components?.

Consumer stated driver's side tailgate cable broke due to rust. The dealer and manufacturer were contacted but indicated that there were not replacement parts available. The consumer was also told that the 1999 model was not covered under the current recall.

While driving strap to the tailgate sheared off. Consumer noticed that while the vehicle was parked the tailgate, cables, and tools were removed from the vehicle. Driver took vehicle to dealer, and mechanic determined that the tailgate and cables will not be replaced due to a manufacturing decision.

When the consumer called to schedule an appointment to have the recall performed, he was told there were no parts and he would receive a call once the part(s) arrived. The consumer received another recall letter and he called the dealer again and was told the parts were still not in. )recall#04v129000).
