1 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

I own a 2000 Chevrolet silverado 4wd, yesterday afternoon I pulled into my driveway and when I hit the brakes I heard a "pop" noise and my brake pedal went to the floor and a cloud of smoke came from under the hood . I got the truck stopped by putting the transmission in park. I inspected all 4 wheels looking for a leak and found none , then I saw a puddle on the ground under the drivers door , upon inspection I saw the brake lines heavily rusted and fluid leaking from them . I pushed the brake pedal with my hand and saw the fluid squirt out and splash on the exhaust pipe . I have read on - line that this is happening to many many chevy truck owners across the nation . I do not use my truck in mud or on the beach and I do not live in a state with harsh winter salt issues . I looked at the brake lines on my truck and they are rusted in places not the whole length and this to me looks like a material problem from the manufacturer . I had no warning of this problem , my bake pedal was fine right up to the second that line burst and the brake pedal went to the floor . I feel this is an issue that could cause a deadly accident and as such should be addressed and repaired by g. M. At no cost to the owners before someone gets killed . I was lucky I was in my driveway and not on the highway when this took place and moving at a slow speed.

2 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that after disconnecting a boat from the vehicle there was a brake malfunction. Upon inspection the contact noticed there was severe corrosion near abs control box on a brake line which resulted to access fluid leaking from the brake line. There were no warning indicators prior to the failure however after five minutes after the failure the vehicle brake warning indicator did illuminate. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact the vehicle mileage 147,000. Kh.

3 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2015

I was driving up my street to go watch fireworks and when I went to stop at the stop sign, my brake pedal sunk to the floor. I barely managed to stop in time and got turned around to get my 2000 chevy silverado back in my driveway. When I looked for the problem I saw rusted brake lines, and brake fluid dripping from them.

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

Two of the brake lines split open while applying the brakes during a routine deceleration to stop at an intersection. Brake pedal went to the floor and vehicle failed to slow. I had to apply the parking brake to bring the vehicle safely to a stop in an adjoining parking lot. Upon inspection the broken lines and leaking brake fluid we seen. The brake reservoir lost nearly 10oz. Of fluid. The brake lines are well known in the auto repair trade circles to be made of inferior steel and gm should offer replacement at no charge. For juxtaposition, I own a 1995 Jeep wrangler with the same amount of miles and has stainless steel brake lines and the look weathered, but no corrosion and never a failure.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when depressed and the vehicle was able to come to a stop. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and informed that one of the brake lines completely rusted which caused the brake fluid to leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

Had driven truck home for lunch. Was returning to work. When I tried to stop at redlight to make a left the brake pedal went to floor and I had no brakes. Was able to get truck into parking lot. Puddle of brake fluid on ground under driver side rear wheel. I was scared. It could have been bad. I have never heard of this happening before. Brake lines rusted. I had no warning. One minute I had brakes and the next minute I had no brakes. Had truck towed.

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2013

Replaced front brake rotors and pads. When I tried to get brake pedal pressure, the pedal went to the floor, and brake fluid was leaking from the left rear wheel. I brake line was badly corroded and broke through. I had zero braking ability and had to back the truck out of the garage using only the emergency brake. This is the second occurrence of broken brake lines due to bad corrosion on this vehicle. The first incident also resulted in a broken, badly corroded brake line breaking and leaking fluid, and resulted in zero braking ability. I had to have the truck towed for repair that time. Not sure how im going to get it fixed this time. All remaining brake lines are also badly rusted and are sure to brake shortly if not replaced. The undercarriage of the truck is also severely rusted to a point that appears that the truck is 100+ years old. The frame is nearly to the point of being rusted through. These are serious and dangerous conditions with these trucks that needs to be addressed by Chevrolet. Someone is going to get killed because of this negligence by using inferior material for brake lines and frame steel.

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2013

I had the oil changed on my 2000 chevy Silverado 1500 2 wheel-drive pick-up truck by a local shop and when I started the truck after the oil change and put the truck into drive in the shop parking lot, I noticed that I had to depress the brake pedal down to the floor. Prior to this, I never had to press the brake pedal to the floor. The brakes previously were strong and required a slight push. I drove a short distance and found that stopping required the brake pedal to be pressed all the way down to the floor and immediately returned to the same shop and asked the shop to take a look. The shop found that one of the brake lines was leaking fluid (under driver side) and explained that all of the brake lines looked rusted. This truck primarily was used by a highway dept outside of buffalo, NY (road salt/rust belt geographic area) - the exposure to amounts of road salt/ice-melting chemicals may have been a contributing factor. The truck has been towed to another mechanic and I am waiting to hear back about the repair options. If the NHTSA would like any evidence (such as photographs or the actual rusted brake lines), please let me know.

9 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2012

Applied the brakes at a traffic light and the pedal hit the floor. On inspection I could see fluid leaking from the brake line. Took it to the chevy dealer who tells me all of the brake lines need to be replaced due to rust, as well as the abs and caliper. I had the abs sensors replaced 2-3 years ago due to rust, at a service center not at the dealer, and now the replacement ones are bad. So I'm thinking gm is using substandard parts and replacement parts are even more substandard. The abs sensors were already under recall, I having not understood how recalls worked took the truck in for the repairs after receiving notice of a recall, before experiencing problems. So when I did have problems the recall repairs were already exhausted; I inquired what the dealer did when I took it to them for recall; the dealer told me the cleaned the abs sensors to satisfy the recall order. So 2-3 years ago I had them replaced when they did rust and fail, now they are acting up again and need to be replaced. So now they want $3,200 to replace brake lines, caliper and abs.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2011

I was backing my truck up at a boat launch when I applied my brakes and still kept going almost running over my hunting partner. I pulled the trailer out and everything seemed normal. While going home later that day I was going down a slight hill when I hit my brakes and pedal went to floor. Brake warning light then came on. I found the fluid was low and then filled it up. At home I saw brake fluid leaking out from under my truck like a sieve. My garage informed me my brake lines are all eaten up by rust - though truck was undercoated. I need to replace the lines.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2011

My wife and I were getting ready to go into town. When I stepped on the brake to put the truck into reverse the pedal went straight to the floor. I tried it again and the same thing happened. I got out and looked under the truck. Right under the drivers door I saw alot of fluid leaking. Upon closer inspection the brake lines leading to the abs unit are very rusty, so much so that one actually burst. I had driven the truck earlier in the day and didn't notice anything wrong, no spongy brakes or warning lights. I tried contacting gm. All they wanted to do is have me tow the truck to a dealer and have them inspect it. I later called the dealer and talked with the service manager, he said gm probably wouldn't pay anything towards fixing the brake lines. As of yet I haven't repaired the rusty lines but I am going to save them in case there is a recall so I can show them to someone.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2011

2000 chevy silverado brake pedal went all the way to floor and brakes barely worked. This happened at highway speeds and almost caused me to rear end the car in front of me. Pulled off the highway and noticed fluid leaking from under the front of the truck. I crawled underneath and saw the fluid coming from the brake line going to the front passenger wheel. Brake line was severely corroded and the area where the leak is occurring can be squeezed together with finger pressure. Inspected the other brake lines and they all appear corroded with several places being very weak and can be squeezed together with finger pressure. Searching on the internet, there seems to be plenty of other people who have experienced the same issue. Some with more disastrous results. I am looking to replace all the brake lines with stainless steel.

13 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2011

Rusted brake line leaking brake fluid causin rear brake failure.

14 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph approaching a red light, the brakes suddenly failed; the brake pedal extended to the floorboard. The contact used the emergency brakes to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that the brake line was rusted and brake fluid had leaked out. The mechanic replaced a part of the brake line and informed the contact the repair was a temporary fix. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000 and the current mileage was 92,400. Updated 01/26/lj updated 04/04/11.

15 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2010

100% brake failure, fluid leaking from brake line under truck, loss of brake pedal at stop, not able to avoid stopped vehicle at traffic light, have truck towed from scene.

16 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2010

Pressed brake to put into gear. Brake went to the floor. No pressure. Hear fluid coming out from under driver side door undercarriage. Pressed foot brake again. Same thing. Fluid coming out. No pressure. Checked. Brake fluid leak from rusted brake lines. Very bad rust. Very dangerous. Brake lines should not rust like that. One of the most important part in a car is the brakes. This is a severe safety hazard. I work in the quality department for a major us defense contractor and this would not pass standards. Major failure. Good thing my daughter and me were still parked. I live on a very steep hill and that would have been very bad if I didn't notice problem.

17 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2010

Brake lines corroded causing the fluid to leak and loss of most braking capacity. There was no accident. All the brake lines were replaced. The work was performed by a Chevrolet dealer and the old parts are not available.

18 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2009

Brakes failed at a stop sign. Brake fluid was leaking. Mechanic told me that the rear brake lining was completely rusted out. This also happened to the front brake lining in 2007. This truck is only driven about 20 miles a week since 2002. I have maintained this vehicle up to date. Had other Chevrolet trucks older and never had a problem with any rust from snow or salt.

19 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2008

07/06/2008 - leaving a parking lot. Attempted to stop. Brake pedal went to floor. Brake lines cracked due to rust. Brake fluid was covering ground under truck. Three out of four main lines were replaced. 04/22/2012 - mileage-98,600 - leaving my driveway and depressed brake pedal. Brake pedal went to floor. Right front brake line had holes due to rust. This line was a separate line from the other three out of four lines that were replaced.
