Gm has known issues with their frames rotting prematurely. We bought a 2014 chevy Silverado 1500 in 2016 and had it undercoated at a dealership that claims it will prolong the inevitable rusting/frame rot. The truck has just under 99k miles and should be worth $15-17,000 and won't pass inspection due to severe frame rot we are told it is very unsafe and not drivable. We will be lucky to get $4,000-5,000 to trade for a part out. Our only other option is to spend $10,000 to get a new frame. Gm has known about this issue and fails to do anything about it. Toyota had similar issues and stood by their name and products and replaced frames or gave consumers $10,000+ to make it right. It is not fair to the consumer we cannot win a class action against gm and demand a payout for such massive losses. Had we known our frame was so bad, we wouldn't have dropped over $5,000 in it over the last 11 months for rocker panels, cab corners, shocks, bearings, etc. We are out $15,000 on this truck and gm should be held accountable. There are thousands of people nations wide that are in the same boat hoping gm will be held liable at some-point for the distress they have cause their loyal customers.

I was sold a vehicle by a dealership with a completely unsafe frame. The frame is very rotted and has multiple holes and as well as a split open portion on the drivers side that extends down most of the frame. This issue was undisclosed by the dealer. There was also a discovery of rotted suspension components making the vehicle extremely dangerous to myself and others. Another undisclosed issue would be that this vehicles engine does not match the VIN number.

The tailgate on my 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 opens randomly. Initially, it was not often, but progressively happening. I had to pull over in rush hour traffic this morning to shut the tailgate after it opened randomly. The only reason I knew, was checking the rear camera.

The upper front grill molding flew off the vehicle while moving and the parts are available for inspection. Please see uploaded photos. The safety of motorcyclist and other vehicles following me were put at risk of being hit by a 24 inch wide piece of the upper front grill at high speed that flew off the vehicle while traveling on the highway without warning. The problem has been confirmed and reported by numerous vehicle owners like mine posted in online forms that I have attached to the upload files section of this correspondence. The vehicle was inspected for repairs by the manufactures dealership representative and a repair invoice has been uploaded. There were no warnings prior to the failure of the upper grill molding being dislodged from the front grill while the vehicle was moving.
The way I can best describe it is my vehicle falling apart, either due to cheap parts. Or poorly being put together. I was driving down the highway at about 65 miles an hour, when suddenly I hear something smack what seemed to be my headlight, then again snack into my drivers side mirror. I had not seen anything on the road previous to this or anything in the air so it seemed strange to have “hit” something. I was about an hour from my destination still so when I arrived I checked out my headlight. I then discovered I hadn’t hit anything, a piece of the fascia of my truck had blown off in the wind, which was the first sound I heard, then proceeded to impact my drivers side mirror. I’m not sure how long it was in the air or if it had impacted any vehicles on the highway behind me.
Check engine light came on. P0442 code. Brought for service. Needed to replace fuel components but frame too rusted to mount parts. Told to see body shop for repair if possible. No rust on bed or body . Body shop could not repair frame. Body shop said frame is no longer safe to drive. Unable to pass state inspection. 97000 mi , no commercial use. Well maintained.
Main frame rails have rusted completely through on both sides. Inside by fuel tank. Many other gm owners have reported this issue online. Truck only has 136k and will not pass inspection. Known defect for the factory undercoating was dealer fixed three times prior to the 6 year warranty being expired. It was noted and fixed on the date of purchase in 2013.
Chassis framework has corrosion including perforation of major frame parts near rear wheels and under the fuel tank. Vehicle has only 70,000 miles and has been well taken care of including regular winter weather washings with underbody wash package. This is a known problem and should have been addressed similar to Toyota truck frame problems. Now I have a like-new appearing vehicle which has been well maintained however the chassis frame is now unsafe and in need of repair. This problem should be addressed up to and including frame replacement.

While pulling a trailer down the highway the tailgate of my truck dropped all by itself causing considerable damage to the tailgate. If I had been carrying material in the bed of the truck it could have blown out and became a safety hazard for other motorists.
Due to a failure to properly prepare the frame (gm service bulletin 19-na-255), the frame of my 2013 Chevrolet silverado has rusted and cracked due to the extensive rusting. I was made aware of this issue by my mechanic while repairing another unrelated issue. Had I not taken my vehicle in for service, I may not have been made aware and the damage could have gotten detrimental to safely operate. My vehicle only has 122,109 miles on it. This rusting jeopardizes the entire structure of my vehicle and all of the components attached to the frame. Gm is aware that this is an issue for model years 2011-2024 and has yet to recall the vehicles to remedy the problem.
I was merging on to the expressway and my truck kept going to the left into traffic towards a concrete median. I turned my wheel to the right to try to avoid it and started to spin out and went back to the right side of the expressway which was four lanes wide and slammed into the guardrail. After the wreck I noticed my abs light was on I’m not sure if it came on as I was merging onto the expressway.
I had a car accident in mexico while I was driving inside the beach.

The back window is leaking water into the cab. Water enters the cab any time it rains or when washing the truck. This water is creating a damp environment by soaking into the back of the seat, the carpet, and the headliner, creating the potential for black mold. Immediately after purchasing the truck, the dealership had me bring it back in so they could fix it. Ever since the repair from the dealership, the window has continued to leak at the same rate that it did before the fix.

Tailgate will come open by its self.
When my truck is outside and gets rained on. The tailgate automatically drops and keeps dropping over and over again. It’s been doing this for months. I have many safety concerns. I’ve had my tailgate open while driving. I had a young child standing behind my truck and it automatically opened. Recently over the period of the night it kept sending signals to drop annd lights would alol turn on until my truck battery was drained. I’ve looked up and saw other silverados in my time frame with same problem with tailgate switch and have been recalled. This is 100 percent same thing going on with my truck. I have video but couldn’t upload below.
Recently while up on the hoist the technician said the frame rust was very severe and the truck was in danger of buckling. Should it be so bad at 114,000?.

I just bought this truck in June of 2024. This was a bad dealer because he knowingly sold me the truck with severe frame damage and let me drive a dangerous truck off the lot. I cannot deem it as a total loss to have it replaced because it falls under “wear and tear”. I now have to pay for the truck for the next 5 years and don’t have the money to fix it because the quote states it will be around $13,000, which is how much he sold me the truck for. Because it is a 2010 the warranty has expired. I am completely frustrated and disappointed that there is no one to help me with this betrayal. I have read that many others who have bought GMC’s are and have had the same issues and gm refuses to recall the frames. Something needs to be done about this considering it is gm who did not apply any anti-rust or anti-corrosion to the frames on their vehicles.
The frame of my 2013 silverado has rusted through and the car is no longer safe to drive. It has 94k miles and is otherwise in perfect condition. Last year I had the cross members of the frame replaced because they were totally rotted through. My truck was the 24th chevy that amherst welding had repaired that year. I traded my 2000 silverado in 2013 to buy my current truck, and the frame on the 2000, was totally sound, and had a lot of life left in it at over 1000k. Toyota replaced the rusting frames on their trucks, and so should chevy. I could provide photos if necessary . . . I saw the rotted frame when the truck was on a lift.
This gm vehicle presents a safety risk to the public. The frame of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has prematutely rusted and corroded. Gm fully understands and acknowledges this public safety risk only through a "technical service bullitin" (service bulletin number 19-na-255) which states that gm is aware of the lack of application of protective coating on this year and model. This "technical" concern urgently must be upgraded to a recall. The truck in its entirety and the public are at risk. The premature frame corrosion caused by the failure to apply protective coating which gm acknowledges, can, and presumably has, result in death. The structural integrity of the entire vehicle should not be categorized as a safety bulletin. An incident due to faulty manufacturing resulting in death, is by definition a recall. Above mentioned vehicle does not meet minimum safety standards or poses an unreasonable safety risk due to defects that could harm consumers, hinder performance, or cause legal issues for the manufacturer.

The tailgate opens up while vehicle is in drive. No warning lights come on, the only way I knew is that people driving beside us flagged us down. The pickup bed was full of our luggage… luckily, nothing fell out. This has happened at least 3-4 times. The last time, we were towing our travel trailer, the tailgate opened up while we were driving and got caught on our tongue jack and propane tanks…damaging the tailgate and propane tanks.
The interior of the updated 2022+ Silverado 1500 and 2024+ hd silverado has multiple chrome surfaces lining various components of the dash and center console. When operating the vehicle during daylight hours, the reflectivity of the chrome reflects sunlight and directs glaring light into your eyes at various angles. This glaring and dazzling light reflection causes a direct blinding irritation to the driver that interferes with visibility outside of the vehicle and reduces the driver's ability to safely identify and react to changes in the roadway or surrounding traffic. This is an issue that is widely reported by a multitude of owners across online forums and social media groups.
An independent service center noted the integrity of my frame is compromised due to severe rust. The rear passenger side area of the frame near the gas tank is falling off and holes can be poked thru it. My safety is put at risk if I were to get in an accident or even minor collision. Potential for parts to abruptly break due to the rust/corrosion. No warning lamps or messages have appeared.
Just told by car repair shop; dealer; and frame and body shop that the 2010 silverado truck we paid $20, 000 for 2-1/2 years ago has a frame that is rotted. All professionals mentioned it is a design flaw gm was aware of. The 2010, however, was not part of their recall. What can we do to seek restitution for this vehicle that now is worth $800 to a scrap yard?.
Truck failed inspection due to cracked frame and excessive rust.
The frame for my 2015 chevy silverado truck failed inspection for excessive rust on the frame, all around it. It could not even be put on a lift. Other chevy silverados have been recalled for this rampant issue and yet not this particular model. It is not safe to drive, it's an expensive problem to fix and very unfair the chevy is not taking responsibility for it.
I purchased my vehicle from southern pines nc and at the time it had 12k miles on it. At about 40k I started having transmission problems. It would hard shift in 1st and 2nd gears. It also would not go into reverse. Hendrix chevy had my vehicle multiple times attempting to fix things. Telling me it was not the transmission etc etc. My power train warranty expired at 60k. I have asked for my complete service records multiple times. I have paid out a lot of money due to it "not being the transmission". The last time it was there the manager matt took it home and said the changed the transmission fluid which was very dirty. Almost trying to say I had done something to make it that way however in the service history they had it almost the entire month due to issues. I got it back and my brakes went out while driving. I was able to cost to a stop. I was at my limit. I called matt and said come and get this vehicle. I want chevy to take it back. They kept the vehicle for almost 2 weeks. Matt said he personally drove it home and it was fixed. I picked it up and I have not had any issues for about 8 months or. Now my power train warranty is expired and my vehicle is again doing the same things it was when I took it in at 40k. It now has 85k. It is hard shifting in 1st and 2nd. It is rolling when in drive. I also have had many body parts that have come off etc. I called chevy today to again get my service records. I stil have not gotten them. I just want a reliable vehicle. I feel like I have not had a reliable vehicle from day one. I want them to take this vehicle back and I want a Toyota hat is comparable in cost of my truck in its new form. Can you help me?.
My 2021 silverado (~29500 miles) pickup has a multifunction tailgate. I noticed about two weeks ago that the tailgate would unlatch and come down at random. I might unlock and open the door or I might start the vehicle or I might turn off the vehicle and the tailgate would come down. It is very random and has no pattern to why it is happening. The gate is electrically controlled inside the vehicle as well as the controls on the gate itself. I find this such a serious safety concern because you can not tell when it might come down and if you are pulling a trailer it could be disastrous. My main concern is that I might be backing into a parking spot, which I frequently do, and the tailgate is either down or comes down at the wrong time and at best I might back into something or at worst back into or pinch a person between the tailgate and another object. I have seen this problem reported online but I can not verify independently nor first person that it has happened to others. I am having the vehicle serviced next week under the existing warranty. There never were nor are there now any warning lamps to indicate a problem. Until the repair is completed I have put two bungee cords in place to hold the tailgate up.
I bought this vehicle used, in February of 2019. Everything about the vehicle was checked and in very good shape. Approximately a year ago, early 2023, I was told that a bit of coating had come off the frame and was beginning to rust excessively. In January of this year during a dealership visit for repairs I was shown an area of the frame that looked like hunks of rust had fallen of, and then I was told this will turn into a major problem. My most recent visit, on March 21, 2024, I was again informed about the frame rust and was shown not only the rust problem, but large cracks in the frame that could not be repaired and is a major safety issue. I find it hard to believe a ten year old vehicle with 89455 miles can be beyond repair without this being a manufactures issue !.
I realized last weekend that both of my rear doors were full of water. When I opened the rear door on the drivers side, I heard a water sloshing sound, which caught my attention. I closed & reopened the door & once again I heard the sound clearly. I left the door open & noticed the water pouring out at one corner. The water was draining from inside the door panel. I went to the passenger side of the vehicle & noticed the exact same situation. After 30 minutes of swinging the doors back & forth, I drained over a gallon of water from each of the rear doors. Considering the weight of a gallon of water, this is very much a safety hazard, not to mention the corrosion & rust that I am sure have built up over time.
Unknown. I doubt this will qualify but it seems to be a very common issue so I feel it is worth bringing attention to. I recently bought a truck from a state action that was a prior police vehicle as stated by the title. Once I purchased it and drove it home I was inspecting it and found a rust spot on the frame. As I cleaned dirt and debris off of it I discovered that the frame from just before the drivers side door all the way to where it bends up at the gas tank was completely rotted out. Specifically the bottom of the frame is fully gone. Doing research into repairs it seems that this generation and brand of vehicle had this problem seemingly universally. Which leads me to think it may have been a defect in manufacturing. Due to the bottom rusting out it’s hard to spot unless you crawl underneath. I’m sure I don’t have to go into detail as to why a compromised frame that people could be unaware of could be dangerous.
I have a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, covered by multiple technical service bulletins regarding issues with premature frame rust due to a manufacturing issue. During the factory warranty period, Chevrolet did not acknowledge or repair the issues noted in the tsbs. A 10 year old truck, with 81k miles on it is no longer safe to operate due to extensive damage to the frame from Chevrolet failing to fulfill their own commitments in resolving this issue. There has been no abuse or failures by myself as the owner that would result in the current unsafe condition. Due to this being an extremely widespread and known issue, this must be further investigated and upgraded to a full recall. Without a full on recall, unsafe vehicles will continue to be utilized on roadways, causing safety concerns to owners, passengers, and others on the roadway. Chevrolet has just refused to repair the damage due to the expiration of the factory warranty period. The vehicle was in possession of Chevrolet several times during the warranty period, but the resolution and repair was not completed. Per the TSB, this was to be completed and Chevrolet acknowledged the issue. Since not all dealerships have the ability or willingness to address this concern, Chevrolet must be put as the responsible party through a recall to rectify this, allowing owners to drive safe vehicles.
I took my 2013 silverado to my local mechanic for an airconditioning repair. While the mechanic was checking the undercarriage he discovered the frame had cracked due to corrosion on the passenger side just behind the cab. My truck has 144k miles and I am apalled that this has happened so soon. This level of corrosion seems very advanced for a 11 year old truck with below average mileage.
