Frame Rust Problems of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 - part 1

Frame is severely rusted through. Needs to replaced, truck has been garage kept. With less the 100,000 miles on it.

My brother was putting a trailer onto my hitch and noticed that it was unstable. The factory hitch was rusted out thru the metal. Him being a mechanic he decided to put the truck up on the rack. My frame is rusted completely thru!!! because they did not rust proof it right to start. I could have been killed along with my grandson whom I have custody of. No one knew my truck frame was rusted out. It's a beautifully kept truck in great condition. I was not aware of this issue of them not recalling a rustproofing error!!!! omg. A 20k truck is worthless now. Who has to die to fix this!! there is no reason a truck frame should rust through in 10 years!!.

Personal mechanic noted rotting frame areas, tubes between main frame supporting gas tank and connecting shock absorbers. Metal fabricating business consulted and when gas tank was removed and entire main frame exposed severe rusting of main frame on both sides noted. Appears entire frame should be replaced or extensive welding of new metal onto existing frame. The rear passenger shoch broke off and fell onto the highway prior to this. The gas tank was near falling off too. See attached pictures.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to have the vehicle taken to an authorized dealer. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. Finding high level of surface rust on silverado frame.

Frame is rusty to the point of being a safety hazard. Just about every silverado from 1999 to 2013 I see on the road has a very rusty frame. Meanwhile a friend's cousin has a 1969 Chevrolet c-10 pickup that has seen many winters and been sitting in a field, and that frame looks 100 times better than my 2004. This is a concern that should be taken seriously. Also my brake lines rusted and burst almost causing an accident (another very serious issue that has been left ignored). To whomever is reading this, think about any family members with a silverado and what danger they can face from a company that got away with dark methods and is facing zero punishment.

A couple months ago, I bought a 1999 chevy Silverado 1500 z71 with 77,000 actual miles that was for sale on craigslist. The gentleman advertised the truck in excellent condition, with no rust. When I test drove the truck, I noticed it needed new a exhaust, and shocks. The fog lights were broken, and the turn signal lenses were extremely cloudy. This is normal on a older vehicle. The truck has been setting in the garage, since I drove it home. The gentleman told me that all the receipts are in the glove box, from work that was done on the truck. I went through the receipts, and most of them were from oil changes. Since I don't know the history of the truck, it's a good idea to do a tune-up, and change all the filters and fluids. I spent over a $1,000 not including labor, on shocks, exhaust system, turn signal lenses, fog lights, filters, fluids, spark plugs, and ignition wires. I jacked the truck up, so that I could replace the exhaust. When I crawled under the truck, I noticed the frame and frame cross members were extremely rusty. The truck was advertised in excellent condition, with no rust! I started removing the old exhaust, and my hand went through one of the frame cross members. The gas tank hangs from this particular frame cross member. How can the truck body be so nice, but the frame be completely rusted out? if we had state inspections, there's no way the truck would pass inspection! I have a 1995 GMC sierra that's never had any body rust, or rust on the frame! I did some research on the internet, and found out it's common for the frames to be completely rusted out on the gm trucks build from 1999 - 2007. There's millions of these trucks on the road, and the fuel tank, spare tire, or rear-end could easily fall off! why isn't gm recalling these trucks, and replacing the rusted out frames? I have a 2007 Ford f150 that doesn't have any body rust, or frame rust!.

My 2014 chevy silverado has less than 36000 miles on it and has severe rust and corrosion issues throughout the entire frame. Metal is flaking off the flame in large pieces and support elements have significant rust inside and outside. The rest of the vehicle looks brand new. I contacted chevy and they told me it was a known issue and take it to the dealer. The dealer inspected it and said that since none of the corrosion or rust was not "through" meaning they could stick their finger through a hole, it was not covered. They offered to replace the frame at my cost. This is severe rust. It is not simple surface rust expected on vehicle. It is flaking off and would take significant labor to grind/brush and repair. The frame as it is now is a safety issue and I cringe every time I hit a pothole. I fear for my safety and for the safety of my occupants and fellow drivers if the frame were to collapse while driving due to poor construction and severe rust. I informed the dealership of this asking how flaking rust on the main frame and support members was not an issue and was told it was "minor" rust.

The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While inspecting the vehicle, the contact discovered that the entire subframe was rusted and corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (denooyer Chevrolet located in albany, new york) who applied a wax rust proof coating to the frame, but the rusting continued to progress. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who informed the contact that the wax rust proof coating was a temporary remedy and would eventually wear off. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed by the manufacturer that a powder coating was being applied to only newer vehicles to prevent the rusting from occurring. The failure mileage was 29,000.

Bought truck used with 22000 miles on it and went to check spare tire area and found the frame had a lot of rust where the undercoat had pealed off. Went to dealer and they said it would cost them about $1000 to repair and would cost me $350 due to the warranty was past the 3 years.

I just bought my truck about a month ago. I was under it changing the oil and I noticed an alarming amount of rust on the frame members and the brake lines. Some of it looks so bad that I am concerned of having either frame breakage or a brake line failing. I have read many other stories of the same thing happening to other trucks. I have not had a failure yet but I believe it is just a matter of time. After reading all of the horror stories from other owners on various web sites, I am terrified every time I drive it that the brakes are going to fail. I cannot afford to spend $3000 to $4000 to have the truck fixed. Especially when I consider it a manufacturer defect of a safety item. Please issue a recall for these problems before people are injured or killed because the frame has broken or the brakes have failed.

Went to get vehicle inspected was informed that the frame is rusted out and is uninspectable and that I need to junk the truck the body is great has 150000 miles but the cross braces are rusted out and its cracked over the rear axel with all the problems oyhers are having and with Toyota having recall on frame rusting out gm should be doing the same they say that the NHTSA is the one to tell them to do a recall and untill they are told to there is nothing thay can do.

The fuel lines rust away and start leaking fuel badly. All lines have to be replaced. The rust on this truck is unbelievable. Gm will not stand behind the product. The rocker panels all rusted out as well. The frame is rusting out. These truck are just rust buckets.

From day 1 had rust issues on frame. I found out rhere was a TSB on this . I took it to get fixed ,but I am not happy with the way it was done. Rust is still on frame where bumpers attach and other areas of frame not accessible. They did not recall this issue. They did not extend the warranty. There are many complaints online about this issue. They are aware if a problem and hope many owners don't realize it. I told a friend of mine about frame issue as he has one to . They extended his warranty and are going to take the box off truck to repair it. I wasn't offered that as a matter of fact I argued with them about not taking bumpers off to repair it.

Extreme rust on under carrage of vehicle. Brake lines rusted out causing brake failure frame rusted out at rear leaf springs and frame rail cross members. Rear shock hangers rusted off vehicle. Frame rusted so bad that it prohibits toung of any type of trailer. Toyota had same problem and they had to do a recall so why has gm not had to do the same thing. It is a very large safety issue affecting many vehicles on the hwy today.

The chassis frame is rusting excessively in my truck with 34000 miles. Takata recall. Airbag light always on, seems defective.

The bolts and nuts in the frame were also corroded and could not be removed. Additionally, all of the undercoating fractured from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the abnormal and extensive amount of corrosion to the frame and undercarriage areas were confirmed. The dealer informed the contact that they would remove all of the rust and corrosion and apply a new undercoating. The failure mileage was 500.

Chevy rust. Brake lines rusted out completely and failed - happen at slow speed no one injured. Shackled broke off and hit bottom of bed without towing. Frame is rusted out. Neighbor has similar vehicle with same problems (put jack on frame and it went through the frame. ) many complaints online about these very issues.

There is extreme frame rust causing the spare tire mount to become detached from the frame while driving along the highway. Fortunately this happened on a secondary road in south west virginia. The shock absorber was the only thing that held the spare tire mount from coming completely loose from the truck. After inspecting the frame, there is excessive rust on the main frame and one of the cross members is nearly rusted through. This truck is nine years old and only has 63k miles. I have the truck at the dealership for them to see if it is safe to drive I am awaiting to hear from them to see if gm is going to help me with this matter.

I noticed excessive frame rust. Contacted my local dealer and they took the truck in for proper fix. Rust was supposedly ground off and frame and undercarriage were undercoated. Apparently the factory wax coating was not properly cleaned before paint. I recently noticed the rust is back on the frame and front steering parts. This truck has only 16,000 miles, is garage kept and has rarely been driven in winter months.

Was driving and noticed that the brake pedal felt sloppy. Upon investigation I had to replace all rear brake lines, and one of the front do to rust. As I was replacing these I noticed that the frame was rusted and cracked on the drivers side under the door. I had a patch put in, but just the other day I also noticed a new spot on the frame where it bends on the passenger side right behind the motor. The frame is so weak in this spot, I don't believe that it can be repaired.

1/ premature rust all over frame. Frame rail is rotted thru and will collapse in an accident aldo will not pass a safty inspection . This truck has approv. 70,000 miles on it. There are amny threads all over th internet with other people with this problem. G m knows about it 2/ I have not brought it to a dealer because I already know what the answer is I have had gm trucks all of my life ( im 68) I have never had a frame rot out. I did speak to a friend in the parts department at a dealer and he knew all about the problem and told me he has no knowledge that gm will recall them like toyata did years ago. I can't even trade it in because the dealer already knows the frame will be a problem and give me nothing for a 28,000 truck . I really don't know what to do . Frame rust has developed on rails under bed. The protective wax coating is falling off, one section is about three inches. Rust has developed in the tubes of the frame and on areas connected to the frame. I have had the truck for about a year and about 12,000 miles. The rust has been progressively getting worse.

After all the rusted parts; fuel tank that strap tank fell out. Brake line rusted through lost brakes and now we are told frame has rusted that cause our fuel line to ruptured. When will general motors step up and take care of these trucks that are rust buckets.

Purchased vehicle with 9000 miles on it July of 2014. Within the last few months found that the frame wax is peeling resulting in the frame rusting. Dealers are advising because of mileage (40k) not their issue.

I have a 1999 Silverado 1500 I had the brake lines replaced in July 2014 because of corrosion. Then yesterday November 4th 2014 I had the truck to a shop getting tires put on and when they started to lift it the rear end started to sag. They let it down and noticed rust holes in the frame. This truck is not safe to drive and gm needs to post a recall on these problems!.

Excessive corrosion all brake lines rotted out and replaced, rocker panels totally rotted, and excessive rust on frame very common with this year g m frame ,g m says they only cover for one year. So I am filing a complaint to see if this can rectified before some one is injured due to brake failure. Please help.

Well about mid 2012 the brake lines just rust out in the middle of the truck and the rear. My girl friend was driving it to work and lost all the pedal pressure. Thank god she was going up in the parking garage. Right now I'm trying to replace line fuel lines. It just started pouring gas out after I just got to work. I nursed it home and made it. The return line is just all rusted out. Then I noticed all three lines where all rusted out. It's to bad nothing has been done yet I can't afford this! it is well known and understood by many that this is a big problem. Also to top that the frame looks more rusted than the 1989 Dodge I just got ride of. I wash under the truck through out winter and don't understand why it's so bad already.
