The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn to the left and right. He also heard a popping noise on several occasions coming from the steering column. The issue has occurred ever since the vehicle was purchased. The dealer stated that due to the age of the vehicle and the lack of a warranty, they would not make any repairs. The contact feels that this is a huge safety issue that must be repaired. I bought my 2004 chevy silverado in may of 2007 when I test drove the vehicle all seemed to be in good operating condition. Later that winter I started to notice a clunking sound in the dash area around the steering column and on a few occasions the steering seemed to get stiff or hard to turn mostly at low speeds such as in a parking lot. I took it to the dealer since the vehicle was under warranty and explained the problem, but to my surprise when I picked up the truck they said there was nothing wrong. My son now works for the same dealership and has told me about problems with the steering shaft but my dealer refuses to admit any defects.

Noise in steering components. Had serviced by dealership twice under warrantee they did a grease pack on the steering column and it worked for about 6 months each time. My nephew worked for columbus ohio dealer as mechanic he told me to contact my dealer for service. He also stated there were several service bulletins out on this repair. When I spoke to the dealer where purchesed the service department stated I would have to pay for repairs. This is a gm problem and should be recalled by them. Truck now has 50,000 miles on it and the problem first started around 10,000 miles. I had truck to an alignment shop where they state truck can not be aligned without repairs being made therefore this is definitely a safety hazard.

The failure occurred at any speed, but happened more while driving on rough roads. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, who lubricated the vehicle, but the failure continued. The failure had been observed three times. The noise had not effected the maneuverability of the vehicle. The current and failure mileage were both 53,000. Steering column shaft is poorly designed, and degrades quickly. Maintenance must be done frequently by an experienced technician, thus making it very expensive. Lubricating the shaft only works temporarily. The shaft required replacement before 70,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet silverado k1500. The contact stated that the steering column exhibited an abnormal noise. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic and an inspection was performed. The failure was located at the steering intermediate shaft. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. : the contact stated while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle presented permanent to worsening conditions of the steering column. Prior warnings included when turning the wheel to the right, the vehicle made a clicking sound and vibration would occur. The steering column gradually became more difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer ten separate occasions for the same repairs concerning the steering. Upon examination, the dealer determined that the steering shaft needed lubrication and that the vehicle would need lubrication maintenance every 4,000 miles. Also, the interior shaft was worn and the belt was broken. The dealer replaced mount cushions, repaired the bushing and steering gear, and provided steering shaft with a lube kit. Prior examinations made by the dealer could not identify the cause of the problem. The left rear tire had a broken belt. Updated 12/01/06.

Steering coupler in steering column goes bad and can be felt in steering wheel giving the driver a vague handling sensation and not a good feel for the road surface especially in turns. Gm has twelve tsbs on the problem and will not repair for no charge I had to pay for the last one and in 30k they have all fail.

When I turn the steering wheel normally from left to right I hear a clicking noise as I turn. The service manager at the dealership stated that there is a ring in the steering column that works with the airbag. He stated that it cannot be fix and that is the way it is. When I told him that other sliverado's that I drove did not make the noise he said that some are louder than others but there's nothing he can do the fix it. Could the ring be defective? if so will it affect the airbag?.

The intermediate shaft on the steering wheel column is loose. The dealer and manufacturer have told me that they are aware of this problem, but there is no fix for it. The front end on the vehicle will feel loose and bounce while driving over uneven pavement and bumps and more so while driving on freeways. The vehicle feels unsafe. All the do is put more lube in the shaft and tell me I have to deal with it. I am having an arbitration hearing. Hopefully something good will come out of it.

2003 chevy k1500 hd has had continuing problem with knocking noise from steering column. Already have taken it in once and a "repair" at the dealership was performed but I do not know what that consisted of. . . They claim they replaced the part but it is not 26,000 miles later and its doing it again worse than before.

Consistent knocking noise coming from the steering column. The dealer has regreased the shaft twice with special grease and on the third attempt replaced the whole shaft with an updated version. In less than six months the shaft has begun to knock again.

Steering column/shaft feels as if its coming loose,taking to dealer to fix.

The steering mechanism has gone out on my 2004 Chevrolet silverado half ton pu 4 times in 100,000 miles, the first time at approximately 32,000 miles. You start feeling play and knocking in the stering column. I get it repaired when I start feeling the knock. The mechanics have said that they have had to replace the steering mechanism in most silverados of that age several times. It seems the steering is a safety issue & there should be a recall. It has cost about $900 each time to repair it. Even the replacement parts are defective.

2003 Chevrolet 1500hd 4x4 - the intermediate shaft made a clanking sound" while turning and driving. It was extremely annoying and loud. I took vehicle to the dealer twice while under warranty. I now only have 57,000 miles on the truck. Both times they greased the shaft. Now it was back even worse. The dealership told me that gm has come out with a new shaft. However, they do not know if it will be any better or worse, and of course they wanted me to pay for the new part. How could I know if the shaft was on the verge of failure? do I just allow the noise to continue until it failed? will it fail? what will happen when it fails? I would expect gm to own up to this problem. They knew it was a design flaw, but refused to accept responsibility.

Noticed rattle in steering column, took to dealer for diagnosis. Was asked if I felt it in the steering wheel I replied yes. Was told the steering shaft was the problem and it was replaced. Since 2004 it has been replaced no less than 3 times. Was told by dealer this has been a problem since r2000. Also was told they have replaced 200 steering shafts in vehicles. I feel when the steering shaft starts to get sloppy it affects the control of the vehicle and it feels like the vehicle flutters especially on rough or uneven road conditions.

My 2004 chevy silverado has had a knock in the steering column it started at 18k. I had it fixed by gm at 30k. It came back at 37k. I did research and found out it is a very common problem that people keep paying to get fixed and it brakes soon after. I as many others are driving around with the problem. We cannot keep paying to get this fixed with defective parts. Please help by investigating this issue. Thank you.

I have a constant problem with the steering column on my 2003 chevy Silverado 1500 z71. It is alway vibrating and cluncking. I bring it into for service and after about 4-6 months I am in there again for the same problem. The service dept. Stated they are aware of problem but have no fix but to grease part. Unacceptable. How can you know of a bad part and charge customer to temporarily fix problem. Wonder what else all that rattling around messed up under there.

I have had the steering replaced 3 times on my truck. And it is still messed up.

I have had clunking, stiffness, and metal to metal sounds in the steering column and felt in the steering wheel in which they repaired the intermediate shaft on the steering column. They have repaired it twice. It is now needing another repair. The clunking and noise is more prevalent when turning to the right. Very noisy and can feel it better on slow turns to the right on normal pavement.

Steering column - the column makes a knocking noise. I can also feel the knocking within the steering wheel. The bushing was replaced while still under warranty. Now this same problem has come up again. It went away for 6 months or so and has been back every since.

Steering column rattling and vibrating excessively on my 2002 Chevrolet silverado. While vehicle was still under warranty, the dealer reported that the column just needed to be greased. Three days later, the noise was back. Same thing was done when the truck was taken back to the dealer. This appears to be a common problem with the pick up. The vibration from the column is enough to put your hands to sleep and the noise is extremely annoying.

My steering in my 1997 Chevrolet silverado is erratic. It is ultra easy at times and ultra difficult at others. There is no pattern to when it will suddenly jerk out of my hand. I have had to disconnect my steering sensor located on my steering column. There are multiple service bulletins out for this issue. The warranty period under which Chevrolet would investigate the issue expired before I could take my vehicle to the local dealership, while I was in aghanistan. My vehicle no longer falls under the warranty period. My dealership where I purchased the vehicle did not notify my at any time of a recall/concern. I was unaware of any concerns until just recently.
