1 Tank Mounting problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

My wife was driving our 2003 Chevrolet silverado 4x4 pickup on secondary state route. While descending an approximate 6% grade into a right hand turn at bottom she depressed the brake pedal to slow for the grade and turn and it went to the floor, the service brake message came up in the dic and the door chime sounded. She pulled over as soon as possible as she was shaken from riding out that hill and turn with minimal brakes and called me. I went out and drove the truck back to our home and put in the garage to inspect the problem. Once under the truck I found brake fluid dripping from the side of the fuel tank and frame area under the cab and bed of the truck. The service brake line from the abs block to the rear frame point where the brake hose to the rear axle mounts was corroded through and leaking. Further inspection showed all brake hard line plumbing to be in poor condition and also the fuel lines showing high corrosion. A call to a local gm parts counter revealed that gm does not make a replacement set for these lines and that a technician would need to field bend and make up each line. Later research proved this to be wrong as gm offers a deeply discounted unadvertised line set from ac delco. In researching finding parts to repair, I have found this to be a common problem with Chevrolet/GMC trucks from about 1999 up according to the various truck owner forums online. Driving the vehicle home at slow speed, braking was very minimal with the rear brake circuit out,and the knowledge of poor brake operation, so therefore it is my opinion that this is a safety issue with these vehicles with the potential of injury or even death when all the factors combine poorly, and at the least, gm should be required to notify owners of this potential problem with their vehicle, if not recall and repair those effected vehicles.

2 Tank Mounting problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

The fuel level sending unit in my 2001 Chevrolet silverado is totally inaccurate. About a year after I purchased the truck in 2005 the fuel gauge became sporadic, randomly going to empty then back to full and every where in between. This would mostly happen when the truck was lower on fuel. As the next couple years pasted by it got worse and worse. Finally in 2009 I replaced the unit and fuel pump. The kit included and new connector for the wiring harness, so I was hopeful this would resolve the issue. Well after about a year or less I started having issues again. This time the fuel gauge does not randomly go all the way to empty or full randomly, but once it gets past 3/4 of a tank it cannot be trusted anymore. Especially once you get past the 1/4 of a tank it looses all accuracy. Allot of times it when I start the truck it will be at 1/8 of a tank but as I start driving it will go up to a 1/4 of a tank. Or visa versa. I live in a flat part of the country and this has nothing to do with hills. Last time I filled up it said I had a little less then a 1/8 of a tank (about 3 gallons, 26 gallon tank) and when I filled it up I put almost 26 gallons in. I would replace it, but I don't want the same thing to start happening again.

3 Tank Mounting problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/08/2009

Brake line blew out due to corrosion when pulling to a stop light, was able to stop the truck w/o incident. This was 8aug09. Repaired on 12aug09. On 5aug11 went to replace shocks thinking they were shot, problem discovered, entire shock mount rail assembly had rusted away from the frame and is hanging in the air. Mileage: 148876. On 30sep11 gas tank dropped to the ground due to corrosion of frame, and also exhaust system components have rotted away from the frame and now hanging, there are also some cracks in the frame, mileage 149476. There is no rust or damage to the body on this truck at all. It still looks like a new truck. The frame is rotting away from under the truck. I should have bought a Ford. Will never buy another chevy. From what I see, this is a known problem that gm know's all about and refuses to do anything about all these trucks. Gm should recall and replace everyones frames on trucks like mine that have perfect bodies before someone gets killed.

4 Tank Mounting problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/19/2007

Fuel tank rear mounting strap corroded thru strap on outer side of truck. Break occurred about 1" down of the top of the rubber chaff protective coating. Rubber coating provided a pocket to trap moisture and increase rate of failure. Forward strap has similar damage but has yet to fail. Failure of second strap could have lead to fuel tank falling onto the road during driving conditions. Please contact me to view components. Date of removal will be Feb 20th 2007.

Failure Date: 12/27/2006

Rear gas tank strap has carroded thru, this was noticed when iwas having new tires put on. The truck has 84000 miles on it. I have not yet fixed the problem cause it was found yesterday. I usually keep a vehical about 10 yrs. , and never ran into this problem . The straps should last longer than 6-7 yrs.

6 Tank Mounting problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/10/2006

Erattic fuel gauge operation: fuel gauge reads empty at random times, amount of fuel in tank isn't a factor. Gauge drops quickly from 3/4 to low fuel warning (within a few miles).

7 Tank Mounting problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/27/2006

I purchased a brand new 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in may, 2006. I had no trouble with the vehicle. . Until October 27. I had 3800 miles on the truck. I had filled my gas tank just out of san francisco and drove approximately 60 miles just out side of calistoga, California northbound on hwy 29. A winding, uphill mountainous road, single lane traffic except for a few passing lanes and turn-outs. I was driving up an incline. I noticed smoke wisping behind the cab. Almost immediately, the truck died. . . Red indicators on. Fortunately, it died right at a wide passing lane location, and I veered to the right, blocking one of two northbound lanes. I got out of the truck and saw serious smoke and some flame coming from under the bed of the truck, up between the cab and the front of the bed. A vehicle behind me, evidently saw it already and pulled over to assist. Another vehicle, driving southbound pulled over, had an extinguisher which I shot underneath the bed, but it did not help. At that point, I was concerned that the vehicle would blow up . There was an extreme fire danger in the area and there was a strong possibility that this could also turn into a forest fire. There was no stopping the fire . The truck was engulfed in flames. The calistoga fire department was enroute. The fire department arrived and doused the truck fire and a brush fire. California highway patrol showed up. Secured the area for the fire department to neutralize any residual fires and the arrival of the tow truck. The truck was totally burned. A full blown raging truck fire, on a single lane highway in extremely dry conditions, in the middle of an area with blind turns in both directions. Absolutely amazing.
