36 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/20/2013

While driving home from work, I attempted to brake and my foot went to the floor. I was able to pump the brakes and get the vehicle stopped but would lose pedal pressure quickly. After I arrived at home I inspected my brake master cylinder and it was empty. Inspecting under the vehicle, I noted that brake fluid was covered on the under carriage of the truck immediately under my seat. The brake lines appeared both corroded and rusted. Fortunately, I have been driving emergency vehicles for 30 years so I was able to avert disaster and make it home safely.

41 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/28/2013

In driveway, started truck, applied brakes and the pedal went to the floor. Got out, saw brake fluid dripping on the pavement on left side. Saw severely (incredibly) rusted brake lines underneath. All brake lines at and near abs module terribly rusted, nearly disintegrated. Had the failure happened while driving, an accident would surely have happened, especially if towing a trailer, which I sometimes do! I looked under my wife's Toyota and see that the brake lines are all coated. Surely gm should be using coated or stainless brake lines.

42 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/27/2013

Backing out of the driveway, foot went to the floor. Was able to stop vehicle before impacting traffic. On inspection, large puddle of brake fluid on driveway under driver's door area and all brake lines running to rear of vehicle are significantly corroded and wet from leak above where lines head toward master cylinder. Chevy dealer has no recall or investigation information. Chevy national service line was no help. Would not provide regional service manager contact information.

43 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 06/17/2013

I was driving down a hill when a car went through a stop sign at an intersection. I slammed on my brakes, in a panic stop, and my brake pedal went to the floor. I didn't have any brakes so I drove around the car almost hitting it. The other car didn't stop and I drove 5 mph to a parking lot where I looked and found a puddle of brake fluid under the driver side of the truck. I took it to my auto shop and he said I blew out two brake lines. I had all the brake lines replaced at the cost of 2,269. 99.

45 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/19/2013

Started vehicle in my driveway in front of garage, as I had my foot on brake, while placing transmission into drive, the brake pedal went completely down to floor, and the vehicle rolled backwards into garage door frame, causing minor damage to the aluminum flashing on the garage door frame. All attempts to pump brake pedal yielded no stopping effect. Fortunately, this episode occurred in the driveway as my intended route included a steep hill ending at a "t" intersection. Upon inspecting the vehicle, directly beneath the drivers door, there is a large puddle of brake fluid. Upon further inspection, the fluid appears to be originating from a severely rusted brake line that sits above the frame leading into the abs controller. All the brake lines appear in the same severely rusted condition.

46 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

First time brake line failed my wife was at a fast food drive thru and when leaving window applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. Two brake lines had to be replaced going to abs module/motor pack. The next time was about a year later, had moved the truck from bottom of driveway to top and parked it. A couple of hours later brake line broke under drivers seat. Each time had to hold pedal down for 5-10 seconds to find leaking fluid. The fluid was apparently spraying on the frame and running down it. The third time another line busted. Stopped perfect at stop sign in neighborhood and when reaching the second pedal went to the floor. No warning at all three events. Brake pedal went from normal to going to the floor. There was no softness or extra travel prior to all three times. The truck now has 85,000 miles on it. My local dealers answer to why this keeps happening was it is 11 years old, maybe you should talk to sales about getting a new one. I love this truck minus the brake issues.

47 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/29/2013

I noticed that I had fluid leaking from the under carriage driver side. When I inspected it, I found that the brake line was rusted out and a leak had occurred. I then inspected the rest of the brake lines to find that all brake lines were rusted and some of the brake lines were flaking when I touched them. I then did some research online and found that there were many issues with the brake lines rusting out on the 2004 chevy silverado. This could have been a more serious issue if I was driving the vehicle and lost my brakes due to these lines rusting out. The vehicle also only has 76000 miles on it.

48 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/22/2013

I had just picked up a trailer at u haul and was driving down the hill in front of their store to finish signing the paperwork. At the bottom of the hill I began to apply the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. I came close to running into the u haul building but the truck finally stopped just in time. I put the truck in park and got out to see what happened. I went to the front of the truck, looked under and saw nothing. I went to the back of the truck and looked under and there was fluid steadily dripping and a huge puddle of brake fluid under the truck. I disconnected the trailer and called a friend to pick me up. Once I got the truck home, I began searching for the source of the leak (at this point I thought I had busted a brake hose) I quickly realized this was not a brake hose that had ruptured. The brake line that runs past the gas tank and rear differential was rusted through and had a hole in it. All of the brake lines were rusting in the rear of the vehicle. I took a picture of the line with the hole and went off to the Chevrolet dealership. Once at the dealership, I was told by the young man working the parts counter that Chevrolet did not sell replacement brake lines. He told me that I would have to buy bulk brake tubing and make my own lines. I let him know that the line that ruptured on my truck had over 20 bends on it and that the last four bends would be very difficult to bend by hand. I got nowhere with Chevrolet on replacement parts. I wound up ordering new stainless steel lines from inline tube. I replaced all the brake lines. While taking the fuel tank out so I could install the new brake lines. . . . . . It was discovered that all of the fuel lines were rusting also. I replaced them as well. Chevrolet should not be using subpar materials for anything. Poor quality brake and fuel lines will get someone seriously hurt!! shame on Chevrolet :(.

49 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 02/09/2013

I have a 2005 Silverado 2500hd with 82k miles. I'm the second owner and bought it in 2007. When I got in it a week ago to drive somewhere the brake pedal went to the floor. I checked the brake fluid reservoir and it was completely empty. I had no indication of a problem up to this point. I filled the reservoir but the brakes would not pump up. I looked underneath and saw brake fluid dripping. Upon closer inspection I found the entire set of brake lines and fuel lines were rusted to the point of being rotten. I wiped off the lines to find the leak, and found the fuel line was also leaking. At this point the fittings on the abs module cannot be removed without breaking or damaging the module. I haven't estimated the cost, but all the lines, brake and fuel, will need to be replaced as well as the abs module. ## VIN passed ## Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd 2005 ##.

52 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

As I approached a stop sign, I applied the brakes and the brake pedal went soft and then to the floor. Immediately followed by a brake system warning and a brake light on the instrument panel. I got the vehicle stopped on the side of the road and checked the brake fluid reservoir. It was empty. It had been snowing that day and I noticed a puddle of fluid had formed in the fresh snow under the driver's side of the vehicle, just inboard and aft of the front left wheel. When I crawled underneath and looked I found what appears to be severely rotted brake lines. I have never had a solid brake line fail on me before and was quite shocked at how progressed the corrosion was. I take care of my truck and it gets washed and serviced regularly. With that it gets used as a truck as well. I feel that the corrosion was excessive and perhaps is the result of a material flaw/cheap materials used. I shudder to think what the outcome would have been had I been towing my horse trailer or my camper that day.

54 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/29/2012

While backing up the truck to hook up to a trailer, I pressed the brake pedal and it went to the floor. The brakes failed. I pressed the pedal a few more times and heard brake fluid leaking from outside the cab somewhere, somewhere under the driver seat. After looking around the master cylinder and firewall I traced the lines along the frame and found that all four lines along the frame rail were severely rusted/corroded. At least one line had rusted through and was leaking fluid. The brake system lost pressure and the truck can only be slowed by using the parking brake.

58 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 08/23/2012

I was driving home thurs. Aug 23, 2012 in heavy traffic when I had to stop suddenly to avoid an accident. I stepped on the brake pedal and it went straight to the floor with no resistance. I drove the truck home with very little braking power. While at home I inspected the truck, and found a puddle of brake fluid on the ground under the drivers door. While inspecting the underside of the truck I found that the brake lines just in front of the abs module had rusted completely through.

59 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 08/11/2012

On Saturday, August 11, 2012 I experienced a brake failure. After looking underneath my 2004 chevy Silverado 2500hd brake fluid was dripping from a rusty brake line below the driver seat area. It appeared I lost the rear brakes so I was able to get the truck to the chevy dealership the following Monday August 13, 2012. This truck only had 49,364 miles on it and was approximately 8 years old. The chevy dealer later called me with the bad news that all of the brake lines were bad and needed replaced. They also discovered the fuel lines were rusty and needed replaced too. They later notified me the calipers were rusty as they could not bleed the brakes properly so these also had to be replaced. The total of this August 21, 2012 invoice was $2,772. 28 and this was with a 10% discount. Please note the rear brakes were just replaced 1207 miles earlier on April 30, 2012 for my required state vehicle inspection. During this state inspection (mileage 48,157) in April 2012 they also had to replace a speed sensor as the truck was going into abs at low speeds. The invoice states this sensor “came apart” and they also had to clean the other one. There is was no indication of rusty brake lines or fuel lines brought to my attention during the April 2012 state inspection and on August 11, 2012, just over three months later I experienced total rear brake failure. I certainly feel this was a sudden loss and could certainly lead to future collisions, injury or potentially death if something is not done to try to correct this brake line corrosion problem. I am thankful I was not towing a heavy trailer when this occurred and that no one got hurt but it could have been much worse. I’m glad they found the fuel line problem as this could have caused a vehicle fire or a house fire if the truck was parked in the garage if this fuel line corrosion was not corrected. Thank you for listening.

60 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/27/2012

As I was driving and went to apply the brake, my foot went right to the floor and there was no brake application, I had to use the emergency/parking brake and put the gear selector in the lowest gear to slow and stop the truck. Although the vehicle went through a traffic light, luckily there was nobody in front of me, the road was straight and level, weather conditions were optimal and there was no traffic at the intersection. I had my wife and 16 month old daughter in the vehicle. It was a very scary and dangerous situation, which most drivers may not have had the quick thought to react the way I did and might have been seriously hurt. Upon inspection on the side of the road, it appeared that there was brake fluid was leaking heavily from the middle of the vehicle. Upon further inspection, this turned out to be a rotted brakeline in a spot not visible to inspection. The brake line was the one that runs from the abs ditribution/control unit to the rear of the truck; an almost 12 foot line. It rotted out where the line runs along the left frame rail, above the fuel tank. Upon doing research on the internet, I found that this is a common issue with my type of vehicle and under investigation by the NHTSA. I am not sure why gm did not use stainless steel for the brake lines on these trucks or has not issues a warning to owners or offered to rep[lace the lines at their expense. This is a truly unsafe situation! stainless steel could have been installed at the time of manufacture for a minimal expense and passed on to the consumer. After all they used stainless steel for the entire exhaust system. . . . Why not the brake lines?.

61 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/21/2012

Went to back out of driveway and brakes went to the floor. Stopped the truck and had brake fluid leaking from a failed rusty line. Most lines had major corrosion just behind the engine and above the gas tank. Getting estimate to fix now. . . Won't be cheap as I understand it requires custom bending of brakelines.

62 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 06/09/2012

Was towing a 4200 lb load when the brake pedal went to the floor. No warning light. Pulled safely off of the highway (barely!) and into ocean performance marine - at the end of the I-95 offramp. Left the boat there and had the silverado towed. A brake line ruptured and was leaking brake fluid badly. Still no warning light.

63 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

While driving to go get lunch I went to slow down because of traffic and my pedal went to the floor. Thank god I didn't hit anyone. I had the truck towed home and I noticed brake fluid leaking under the truck. When I climbed under I noticed the lines were corroded and one of the had ruptured. After all of this I started to look on the internet and saw that this is a problem with alot of gm trucks. I can't believe that there is no recall yet!!! are they waiting for someone to get killed first.

64 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/19/2012

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that he applied the brakes in an attempt to stop and the brake pedal depressed all the way down to the floor. When the vehicle was stopped, the contact noticed brake fluid leaking from the brake lines. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where they replaced all the brake lines. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000. Lb.

66 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/04/2012

Brake lines rusted through. 2005 Silverado 2500hd. Six and a half years old 147036 miles mostly highway driving. I always washed the truck and the frame etc. After driving it on salted roads so they should not have rusted. The problem is it appears these are bare steel lines with no apparent coating on them to keep them from rusting. As everyone knows any bare steel will rust extensively when not coated with a paint or some form of corrosion protection. If I would have known the brake lines were not treated I would have sprayed undercoat or something on them to keep them from rusting. The gm dealer that has done all my maintenance and repairs never left me know they were rusting while it was under the 100,000 extended warranty period. I contacted general motors for assistance and they refused to pay for my brake lines, this is a safety item and there should be a recall on all trucks no matter how new or nomatter how old that has these cheap steel lines on them. I took a 700 mile round trip and I didn't know my brake fluid was leaking until I got home and saw the fluid running down the frame onto the driveway. When I pushed on the brakes the brake fluid gushed out real bad. My reservoir was half empty and no warning light came on to let me know there was a problem. I was towing a snowmobile trailer and was extremely lucky I didnot have a situation where I had to brake hard. This is a major problem and should be addressed and recalled before someone gets killed.

67 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 02/22/2012

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that brake fluid leaked onto the driveway. The contact examined the vehicle and discovered that the brake line was corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer confirmed the failure of the brake line. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 58,000.

68 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 02/13/2012

My sister inlaw borrowed my truck to move some boxes. Driving down the road hit brakes pedal felt funny. Second time she hit the brakes pedal went to the foor. Luckly the second time was not a must stop situation. And got the truck off the road into a driveway. Upon inspection I found the rear brake lines were severly corroded and leaking brake fluid. I think this should be addressed before somebody is killed or even a family is killed.

69 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 02/09/2012

On Feb. . 9 2012 I was in a drive thru automated car wash, when driving out I went to step on brake & the pedal went to the floor. I pulled over to the side lifted the hood & checked the master cylinder & saw that it needed fluid, I went into the convenience store & bought a pint of brake fluid, I filled the master cylinder, it took the whole bottle of fluid, I walked to the side of the truck to test the brake pedal & noticed the fluid leaked right out on the ground without stepping on the brake pedal. I had the truck towed to my repair shop, when put on lift the mechanic pointed out the rotted out brake line by the modular valve plus the other three lines were rotted & were unsafe, for a temporary fix I had the one line fixed by replacing a piece of the broken line. It was brought to my attention about the ongoing investigation with NHTSA. I purchased the truck in Nov. 2003.
