Abs Brake Fail Problems of Chevrolet Suburban

Chevrolet Suburban owners have reported 18 problems related to abs brake fail (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/29/2015

The metal brake line between the abs modulator valve and front right wheel ruptured when the brake pedal was pressed. The line failed due to corrosion. All brake lines in the vehicle had similar levels of corrosion near the area the aforementioned line ruptured, and at various other locations on the vehicle. A brake line between the master cylinder and abs modulator had failed in a similar mannner approximately 8 months previously. The transmission cooler lines had also failed due to corrosion approximately 2 years ago. The corrosion and rust on many other components beneath the vehicle and in the engine compartment is rather concerning. Power steering lines (including power brakes, since the vehicle has hydro-boost brakes) appear to be next. All metal brake lines were replaced immediately after the most recent failure for an owner cost of about $500. It is my understanding that the NHTSA recently closed an investigation of brake line failure due to corrosion on several gm trucks and suvs. After about 4 years, this investigation determined that "a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time. " apparently they don't read the complaints on their own website. . .

2 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

Moving my boat in the driveway and when I went to stop my brake line from the master cylinder to the abs controller failed causing no braking!!! pumped them like crazy and it just pissed out all of the fluid. I had my children playing in the area and I was fortunate that they were not killed! upon inspection the brake line rotted at the points where they are held onto the frame by the hangers! this is incredibly dangerous and I believe that gm should have some liability in this matter. The vehicle is barely just over 10 years old and this is a major flaw in design. The scary part is the lines look great overall but where they are placed in all of the hangers they had rot spots in them that was only apparent after dis-assembly. A normal safety inspection would not pick up on the corrosion hidden within the hangers.

3 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 01/19/2011

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban k1500. The contact stated that the abs braking system failed due to rust and a leak. While stopping at slow speeds, the brakes do not stop the vehicle and the pedal extended to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who replaced the abs control module; reprogrammed the computer, the front hubs and the bearings on both the right and left front wheels for $2,000. The vehicle was never taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 78,000.

5 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/15/2005

I have experienced numerous abs brake failures while driving at a low rate of speed. My car is unable to stop under this condition. I brought my car in for service yesterday. The front wheel sensor was diagnosed as a failed part. It was replaced at my cost. I brought to the attention to the dealer directly and to general motors on their phone hotline, the gm recall # 05068 and the nhts campaign#05v379000. I was told my VIN # has not been included in the recall, therefore I would have to pay for the repair which I did. Obviously my car should fall within the recall, per the data that is available paired with the problem/defect and repair that was performed on my car. Does one need to crash or be killed to be included in a recall?! I am requesting immediate reimbursement of the repair bill for this item from general motors or from the dealership. I am very unhappy how I was treated at the dealership, where I have been servicing my car for many years. I am equally unhappy with gm's failure to take accountability for this problem.

6 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Abs low speed failure reference: gm recall no. 05068 NHTSA campaign id number : 05v379000.

7 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/16/2005

The brakes at low speeds were working poorly, causing extended stopping distances. They also made a thumping sound when the abs system failed. Took vehicle to the dealer and they claimed it was other things besides the abs system. Dealership wanted consumer to spend money on the brake pads/rotors, and calipers first and then on defective wheel bearing. Took vehicle to mechanic, and stated that was not the problem he recommended to the dealer, but dealer did not want to fix the actual problem. The vehicle had excessive amounts of rust on it (frame, calipers, rotors and non-body parts). The calipers were rusted and leaking. The rotors were warped and corroded and the brake pads were worn and needed to be replaced.

9 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/03/2005

Abs failure. While applying the brakes coming to a stop, the abs starts engaging making the vehicle pull to one side and making it almost impossible to get vehicle stopped in time because of the abs engaging. This is happening sporadically. And has happened many times with my wife driving. Very unsafe. I have heard of this happening to a lot of other Suburbans.

10 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/12/2004

Update to prior complaint based on additional information. Have discussed this with d boyd. 2004 Suburban failed to slow during hard stop between 40 and 20 mph. I believe that my original conclusion is probably accurate given that the 2004 Cadillac srx abs ecu and the International abs ecu failures were within the time period my Suburban was manufactured. This happened once before and occurs during wet conditions after two consecutive brake attempts. Gm is stone walling me but I'd like to handle this without getting clarence ditlow @ the center for auto safety further involved. I've had problems with hendrick chevy for almost a year now including a defective engine on 1996 tahoe, defective brakes, suspect emissions testing dtc p302 cylinder 2 misfire, possible incorrect transmission replacement, possible failure to replace passenger seat which I believe was recalled and posed a danger for almost 4 years, dex cool gasket blow out, steering column lockup etc. I requested a police report from the nc dot and for some strange reason it's not on file although I have the receipt from the officer. VIN # on the Suburban was 3gnfk1674g131855 manufactured @ the silao assembly plant on 9/13/03 @ 7:10:31. Shipped to 16153 hendrick chevolet-hummer 100 auto mall dr cary nc dealer order number gmngbb charged to zone: 16 dealer: 153 pui: 04203173688. Csq 2ga1416724 date code on the delco battery which failed was March 2004.

11 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/16/1998

Abs malfunctions, especially in wet conditions, brakes perform in a very irregular manner, they are not predictable or offer reliable performance throughout use. Brakes pull hard right, even after several time to fix. I have reported abs problems, and took 4 attempts before dealer tried to repair becuase they could not replicate abs failure occurrence. Steeering chatter when braking from time to time, rear drums have been replaced and turned. Rear drums chattered until turned. Warping occurred to rear drums. This vehcile is unsafe and I have lost confidence in my purchase, and am pursuing the responsible purchase of vehicle underneath the lemon laws of washington state.
