1 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/27/2012

Vehicle was serviced per recall below on 1/26/2006. Abs sensor was inspected and cleaned, but not replaced. Defect covered in recall is now being displayed by vehicle (braking distance is extended at low speed - caused by abs sensor malfunction). Vehicle is currently not driveable. Apparently the solution in the recall was not sufficient to address the problem. Dealer and Chevrolet refuse to address this problem. Recommend that the effectiveness of the recall solution be re-evaluated. Nhtsa action number: 05v379000 NHTSA recall campaign number: pe05020 make: Chevrolet model: Suburban manufacturer : general motors llc model year : 2001 component(s) : service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module.

3 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/17/2007

The abs electronic module failed again today. This will be my second module. The first module failed in 2004 and was replaced. The cost of replacing these has risen to over $1200. 00 a pop. Why doesn't NHTSA investigate these failures? this module failure results in no abs when you need it in a crisis situation.

4 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/04/2007

Ltr re his 2001 Suburban which caught on fire after noticing the abs system sensor appearing on the dash board; seeking reimbursement for repairs. When the consumer attempted to start the vehicle, he discovered the battery was dead. After the consumer jump started the vehicle, that was when the vehicle caught on fire. The consumer had the vehicle towed and was informed the abs was bad, but it was not the cause of the fire. The cause was a computer system that had overheated as a result of the abs malfunction. The consumer had replaced the abs module previously. The dealer replaced the electronic brake control module and brake pressure modulator.

8 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/09/2006

My wife was driving to work and the abs light came on. This was accompanied by a loud noise from underneath the Suburban. After the car was shut off the loud noise persisted. She turned the car off and on several times and there was still a loud noise. She called me and I came over to her work and crawled under the car. I found that the electric motor on the electro-hydraulic control unit (ehcu) was constantly running and the unit was very hot. The only way to stop the unit from running was to disconnect the power harness. The ehcu is right next to the fuel filter and it was so hot that it could have caused a fire in the fuel line/fuel filter if I had not disconnected it. It might have also got hot enough to start the car interior on fire. There should be some sort of shut off mechanism when the ehcu fails. I talked to a number of mechanics and they said that the problem is normally with a relay in the ehcu and this causes the motor to run non-stop. They said this is a very common problem for 1999 + Chevrolet silverado, GMC sierra, and the 2000 + Chevrolet Suburban/tahoe and the GMC yukon/yukon xl. They thought there was probably a recall on them but apparently there is not. The part is only available from the dealer and costs approximately $950. It takes almost two hours of labor to install it so the repair costs about $1150. The Suburban is now in the shop being repaired. The car only has 51,000 miles and this module should not fail with such low miles and it should not cost nearly this much to repair.

9 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/25/2006

: the contact stated while traveling 55 mph, the vehicle's abs and parking lights illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the service dealer, where computer diagnostics identified the component failure as the service brake; electronic brake control module, had an internal failure. The service dealer mechanic also determined that the pump might damage a new module. The manufacturer was notified.

10 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/26/2006

Ebcm failure - abs pump runs continuously and will run down the battery. 2nd time ebcm has failed on this vehicle. Called 800 number for chevy - they would not help me. Dealer wants $1100 to fix.

11 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

12 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/14/2006

Recall on the abs activation wheel sensors was performed and I still having the same problem with the brake system and they want to charge me more to work on the car. I feel that they never fix the problem with the system and the car is still having brake problem at low speed and in parking lots and we are afraid that we are going to have a crash in the car. I would like them to look at it again and fix the abs system they should work to stop the car.

13 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/01/2006

2000 Chevrolet Suburban - antilock brake pump motor/assembly, which when not working makes the antilock brake function inoperable, failed and was replaced by dealer at approximately 41000 miles. Vehicle now has 102,000 miles and antilock brake pump motor/assembly has failed again. Dealer and Chevrolet both say that, due to the mileage of the vehicle, they cannot financially assist in the repair of this vehicle and I will have to pay for it myself. Three (3) independent repair shops have told me that this malfunction is so common of a problem that it is almost inevitable that a recall will be issued once the NHTSA becomes aware of the magnitude of the problem. Parts alone can cost over $1500 for this repair.

14 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/17/2005

Took 2001 Suburban in November 2005 to wilton Chevrolet, wilton, CT, for gm abs brake recall, fixing brake terminals for possible corrosion in northeastern states. Dec. 05 - October 2006 abs dashboard light would come on sporadically for short time and then go off with no reasoning. From August - October 2006 abs light would come on more frequently. After taking the vehicle to local repair shop they hooked up to computer and found vault code with abs module, ($99. 00 charge), but said that I would have to take to gm dealer to replace abs module because they could not reset the computer code when the module is replaced. Took vehicle to arroway Chevrolet in katonah, NY and they replaced the abs module after also finding the same computer code vault. $1,300. 00 repair cost. I have suspicion that when the abs brake recall repair was done that a short happened to the abs module causing it to eventually fail.

15 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/25/2005

The abs module that gm has known is a problem. It's a problem in model years 99 through 02. I own a 2001 Suburban with 54,000 miles. There is a relatively inexpensive alternative than replacement that gm will not admit too. Search the internet for the alternative. It's not hard to find. This problem is so common it's difficult to imagine a company wouldn't issue a recall.

16 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/15/2005

Abs activates continuously at slow speeds extending the stopping distance. This makes you feel like the brakes have failed. This is a problem that occurs every time the vehicle is driven at slow speeds.

17 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/03/2005

Anti-lock braking system (abs) traction control module failure.

18 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

The abs brake light came on, then there was a noise which sounded like a vacuum. Consumer disconnected the battery. The next day the battery was reconnected, and the noise came back. Consumer took the vehicle to dealer for repairs, and it was determined that abs brake module needed to be replaced. . . . Several similar failures on vehicle in this small town. Vehicle should be recalled.

19 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/16/2004

Abs light came on today. The abs pump was bad and required replacement. This is a safety issue and needs to be addressed. Note that the part was in stock, hence this is not a rare occurence. I have several older abs (bosch) automobiles and they do not fail.

20 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/18/2004

About a month ago, the abs light came on when I turned on the engine of my car and it stayed on. A motor under the car continued to run, even after I had turned the engine back off. I took the car into my local Chevrolet dealership and they replaced the module 4. 720 in the abs motor. My car has approximately. 66,000 miles an is an 2001 model - this type of extensive repair should not have happened. The dealership stated that they have had to replace ~50 of the abs modules for the same problem. There should be some compensation and/or recall or something for persons whom have purchased autos in good faith that they were build well and the manufacture will stand behind their product. Old part is not available.

21 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/07/2004

2001 Chevrolet Suburban 2wd.

22 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

23 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/25/2003

After 50,000 miles on my 1999 Chevrolet Suburban (5. 7 / 4wd), I started to experience abs activation at lower speeds when no traction loss was actually happening. This made the distance increase significantly and made for potentially dangerous situations. It was serviced by my local chevy dealership at my cost.

24 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/22/2003

Abs module failed at 56k miles - I believe this is a safety issue with a failure of a braking system at such low mileage. Abs light came on and wouldn't go off. Abs system kept running after car was turned off. Gm dealership told me the entire module needs to be replaced and charged approx. $1000 to fix it.

25 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/07/2003

Abs module failed at 40,200 miles with no apparent reason. Dealer said it was an internal failure. Gm did refund 50% of the repair cost as the part should not have failed so soon.

26 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/15/2000

Vehicle experienced more assist to steering at 30 mph which caused loss of control. The dealer replaced the electronic solenoid relay as possible cause of power assist to steering assembly.
