Chevrolet Suburban owners have reported 120 problems related to tire tread/belt (under the tire category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My family and I were nearly killed when our right rear tire on our 1996 Suburban lost it's tread. The tire was a firestone, at, steeltex, 245/75r16. The tire never lost pressure the tread came off and cause us to go out of control into oncoming traffic where we nearly hit a pickup truck head on. From the point where the tire lost the tread to the time that I avoided hitting the oncoming truck we were in a skid which was about 100 to 150 feet with a chord lenght of about 8'. Since I had overcompensated to miss the oncoming truck we started to skid sideways with the front tires pointed towards the shoulder of the road. At the time that the vehicle left the road we were just past perpendicular to the highway. I don't think that I had applied any brakes because I was afraid that it would make matters worse perhaps it would roll. At that time we left the road. . . I cranked the wheel the opposite way to avoid rolling the vehicle. It started to go straight for a time then it spun around the other direction. . . We were skidding with the front of the vehicle pointed towards the highway. We skidded sideways for several feet where we came to rest next to a telephone pole. My wife, my 7 year old daughter, and my twin babies luke and marin, 2 years old were in the back seat. Everyone was shaken up. Luckily no one was injured. There is approximatly $2,500 damage to our vehicle. $1,000 to the yard that we damaged. The day before our trip I took the Suburban to get the tires checked at a firestone dealership. There was 8/32nds of tread on the tires.

Tire separation at 26000 miles.
Three of the original tires on the vehicle have had tread separation. The third tread separation caused significant damage to the left quarter panel. The right rear tire experienced tread separation while driving at 60 mph. The rear of the vehicle went airborne and vibrated badly. The vehicle immediately stopped and nothing appeared out of order and at the speed of 40 mph there was no indication of vibrating or bouncing. Tire failed suddenly and without warning. Tread separated violently breaking out internal wheel well component and adjacent window wash line. Location was ih35 south of san antonio. Level, smooth road surface. Time - 9:00 pm temperature - 70 f. (dot number: mexico tiresize: p265/70r16).
The tread on the left rear tire separated without warning, resulting in immediate tire failure. I was traveling at seventy miles per hour on a flat section of ih 35 south of san antonio. Temperature was approximately 55 degrees f. Time was approximately 9:00 pm. The tire literally came apart with flying pieces breaking out the plastic internal wheel well assembly and rear window wash hose lines. On 3/12/02 the dealer service center will check for any additional damage. The vehicle remained relatively stable but did cross over the adjacent lane and on to the road shoulder. I have taken photographs of ( and will retain) the tire. When trouble with firestone wilderness tires was intially made public I contacted the Chevrolet dealer and was assured that the problem tires were a different type. When I reported the subject incident to the dealer he suggested that I contact the area GMC service center (1 800 222 1020). After reviewing the problem with the GMC representive I was informed that "to her personal knowledge" I was the first to have this problem. I then asked if someone calls in at some future time and asks if there has been any trouble with this tire would they be told that at least one person has had trouble. I was told that GMC's information system that she uses did not have the capabillity to distribute this information in a comprehensive manner. She did assure me that the design engineers would be made aware. I was also told that I probably would not hear from GMC again about this matter. I informed the representive that I wanted some assurance that the information about this potentially dangerous problem with this tire be, at the least, made available to the next person that inquires about this model of firestone tire. She suggested that I call firestone (1 800 356 4644). This rep. , in turn, assured me that "to her knowledge" there have been no problems with this model tire, etc, etc. (dot number: mexico tiresize: p265/70r16).

I was driving down the street pulling my bass boat. I noticed a "rough" ride all of a sudden. I pulled off the road and checked my tires. I experienced a tread separation on my left rear tire. Tires had been maintained at required pressure and rotated regularly. Firestone manager replaced tire as defective. He stated he had seen these tires separate before but none after they were redesigned. This was a redesign tire supplied as original equipment. Replacement was same type of tire. I do not feel safe driving on these tires. Firestone has a bad reputation now for tire separation. (tiresize: 245/75r16).
