I have a 1999 chevy Tahoe. The steering wheel jerks itself like someone grabs the steering wheel. It is very noticeable on two lane curvy roads. It feels like the truck hits a patch of ice. I have not had it repaired yet but was told by a service adviser that my truck has speed sensitive steering - it has an electrical wire hooked to the power steering pump to provide slow driving assistance. I am told that it sounds like the sensor or evo sensor for this system is bad. I have replaced the power steering pump to no avail. My step daughter has a 1997 chevy 1/2 ton pick up with the same problem. She has had dobbs auto disconnect the system. I think this is very dangerous especially if you over- correct when the pressure changes or briefly gives way as I would describe. I wonder how many crashes are caused do to this gremlin in the steering system. The service manager as my local chevy dealer seems to be aware of this problem.

When driving vehicle, the steering jerks to the right and then is ok for awhile and then jerks again to the right. It is like someone jerks on the steering wheel.
Steering on my 97 Tahoe has for many years 'twitched' when driving at a slow right turn such as on ramp to freeway or slow curve in the road. It never does it on left turns, only right. The steering wheel suddenly pops to the right and only for a second. It then repeats that if the turn on the road is continually to the right. If anyone other than me drives the Tahoe, it will surprise them and cause and accident. Ive read about this problem in many forums online as well as here at the NHTSA site. Gm should be recalling this dangerous steering problem immediately.

The steering assist on the Tahoe suddenly goes away and the steering goes completly loose, and then suddenly it gets firm again. This causes erratic steering and over/under adjustment which can lead to a serious crash. I took it in 2 times and the problem still comes and goes, esspecially while in a turn. This should be a recall because of the seriousness of the problem. If the pwer steering fails it should fail to a firm steering condition not a total loss of steering!!.
Steering feels like it is slipping or overpowered rt turns. The center position is gone when making a right turn. You need to turn the wheel back to center which can require multiple adjustments of the wheel causing swerving. Problem I am told be chevy dealer is common and caused by evo sensor.
While driving at low speed, intermittently the power steering failed. When this happened it was very difficult to steer the vehicle. The dealer had heard of a few instances, but the manufacturer had not.

The power steering failed, which caused the vehicle to jerk to the right.
Erratic power steering assist while driving. Feels like you have no control for a split second.
This is to confirm that ea99011 concerning the steering on the 1997 Tahoe, 350 5. 7 assembled in mexico. The jurking in the steering is not a constant problem. I t does not happen all the time. However, there have been instances where the vehicle was travelling at high speed and this uncommanded imput was enough to induce the vehicle to lurch to the next lane. This sever action only happened once, however as the vehicle ages, the severity seems to get worse when it does happen. Yje vehicle has done this since I purchased it new in 1997. I also have confirmed this same thing with a friend who owned a 1997 saburban, he sold the vehicle as a result of this condition.
When making a slight right turn in a curve or a lane change you experience a temporary loss of steering followed by a release causing a oversteer condition a very hazzardous situation. I contacted the dealer and asked about a recall on this. The person in the service department said it was only a problem with the 1997 models. This problem needs to be checked out before someone gets killed. Please contact me with reply ts.
When turning wheel either left or right, a momentary loss of control causes the vehicle to oversteer. Feels like the steering wheel has become disconnected or the power steering has surged.
Power assist would cause too much assist causing vehicle to swerve suddenly. Failed part was sensor at bottom of steering column. Part failure common according to dealer parts salesman.
At 60+ mph, the power steering feels unstable. This may be a failure in the variable assist system although dealer was confused if tahow still had this system. It may be front suspension instability. Vehicle handles very well at lower speeds but over 60, it wanders and the steering feels like it will overcompensate or oversteer. Unknown if the Tahoe still has a variable power assist steering. I would like to speak to a Chevrolet representative that can provide this information and assistance.
On many occasions while driving, the steering wheel has locked up, dealer has replaced the steering wheel rotation sensor on three occasions and the power steering pump assembly, consumer is concerned that problem is not resolved.
The hydraulic power assist sytem does not function properly is is a very dangerous problem. The steering wheel "slips" at high speed cause the vehicle to swerve suddenly while going around corners. I took the vehicle to the dealer to have this problem repaired, but after $1,000. 00 of repairs, the problem still exists.
While driving, suddenly my vehicle felt like I was trying to steer a vehicle on ice. When I asked someone in the service department, I was told this problem was not uncommon, although dangerous.

Erratic power steering assist while driving, see NHTSA action number: ea99011.
While traveling at 45 mph and without any indication right front control arm had broke off tire as a result of an accident. Consumer added that the power steering went out without any indication while driving at 45 mph causing a right front crash with one vehicle from behind and side swipping three other vehicles before stopping. Manufactuer was contacted.
When turning right, steering wheel will jerk and vehicle will rock and swerve due to evo sensor module. Had evo sensor replaced. Dealer contacted. The evo sensor controls the power steering pump, the sensor is located in the steering column near the firewall on the cabin side.
Erratic power steering assist. Steering wheel input of approximately 15 degrees to the left results in unwanted additional left turn. Most noticable at speeds greater than 40mph.
Power steering is erratic on curves, mostly to the left. Tends to oversteer suddenly when engaged. Very tricky when road conditions are not optimal,I. E. , rain. Happens intermittently so it can catch you offguard. Danger of an accident is imminent if not corrected soon.
Loss of steering control in cold weather conditions on snow and ice covered roads on my 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe. The variable assist steeriing would make a rapid and unexpected over adjustment when making small steering corrections. I lost control and started a "fish tail" when traveling in new york. I live in virginia and found this to be a minor problem in this climate, however, it is unsafe on slippery roads.
Erratic power steering operation. Becomes extremely loose while driving. Shutting off the truck and restarting will resolve the problem for a short period. Feels like the slightest touch to the steering wheel could turn the vehicle over. Also has begun an erratic "twitch".
Failure caused steering at speed to be dangerously sensitive and steering would torque to the right or left when decelerating on an off-ramp when sensor tried to switch level of steering assist, as if running off road onto shoulder. Dealer states this is a problem they have seen and replaced sensor out of warranty. Was not obvious what the problem was until I realized the vehicle had speed sensitive steering. Most drivers would never realize failure had occured. Significant probability of contributing to a loss of control accident.
When backing up or driving at very slow speeds and turning, the power steering will not work, dealer could not find a problem. . Consumer stated problem usually occurs when the vehicle is sitting still and trying to turn for a parking space, there would be no power assist at that time.

Both times the steering sensor failed was at highway speeds. The first time I was switching lanes and all of a sudden it over corrected and almost sent me into the ditch at 65 mph. The second time my wife was traveling on the interstate at 65 mph and turned the wheel a little and it sent her into the next lane cutting off another vehicle. The first time I had it fixed the guy said "OH yeah we have been having problems with these. " the next time I had it fixed I figured they would just replace it since they know there is a problem with them, but they charged my $150 parts and labor. I am going to contact the manufacturer next. It was very dangerous and I cannot believe something like this isn't being corrected.
Steering jerks left or right without warning -intermittent problem. Seems to be worse going around corners, but can happen going straight.
Steering broke loose and caused loss of control. Wife was injured minor but caused huge damage to vehicle. Thankful my kids were not with her and she is o. K.
Vehicle will oversteer when changing lanes to the left or turning left, steering will pull to left.
At highway speeds, steering wheel jerks left on its own. Without a strong grip on the wheel could cause loss of control.
Problem with steering. . Momentary loss of steering, seems to slip then catch. Service dept advised known problem with speed sensor. No factory recall. Cost $250. 00 to replace.
Sudden loss of power steering occurred when the shaft rotating the pump became loose. Yh.
