2010 Chevrolet Traverse 130k miles(told it is in kil. ) 2nd owner. All oil changes and services done. 2 major issues. SUV made loud noise and lost all control of steering and other functions and car shut down while on a freeway, going high speeds, while traveling with 3 children. Almost hit from behind by 2 cars. Was told by gm service center that the timing chain fell off/mechanical failure due to skipping. Other components damaged and all needs to be replaced. Does not seem right for the timing chain to fall off. Seems to be a mechanical defect, not normal wear and tear. Called gm cs several times to explain recent issues and worry of safety and reliability due to multiple repeated timing chain failures on same vehicals with same owners on 2010 and newer Traverse. Told by cs no warranty no recall so can't help. Service manager requested assistance from gm for repairs and it was denied. I called gm again, was told they would communicate with service center and call me back later this week. Prior the power steering failed twice within months. Repaired power steering twice as well as power steering rack. First failure we almost crashed while on a circular icy on ramp to freeway with 3 children because of sudden loss of control. Called gm about possible defect and concerns for safety. Told no warrant no recall. Recently found out there is a special payout for issues. Was told we could be reimbursed. Possible underlaying undetected defects to timing chain and power steering need to be addressed before fatal crashes occur.
Power steering failure at low speeds, around corners, while parking, intermitent.
Power steering fails when attempting to turn at slow speeds (parking etc).
When turning left of right at a low rate of speed the power steering fails for a short period of time, resulting in the vehicle not negotiating the turn correctly. Just last week I was turning left at a stop light trying to steer into the inside lane; however, the steering will would not turn as required - resulting in my car traveling into the outside lane. This is a major issue that could result in an accident. I noticed that several other owners are experiencing similar issues and would like it to be investigated further.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. While making a turn and when the vehicle was in motion, the power steering failed. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified and indicated that there was no recall to provide a solution. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 169,325.
The date on this complaint is the date that things got worse, but the problem has been ongoing for the past 6 months. I was driving on the backroads and slowed to pull into a neighborhood and as I turned the wheel shook violently and groaned very loud. This happened about 6 or 7 times within a 4 hour period but has since went back to the moaning when turning. For the past 6 months, whenever I slow to turn, my wheel moans/whines as if my power steering if failing. I heard of a recall and talk to my local dealer. They said gm would not replace the part unless it actually fails. This is ridiculous, all I can say is if my steering fails and someone in my family gets hurt from loss of power steering, gm will be first on my list to sue.
The vehicle began to under steer intermittently while driving through a mountain pass during a Friday evening. While driving through curves the car had to be slowed considerably below the speed limit to negotiate the turns. Once near our destination approximately 40 miles after first noticing the problem, found turning the vehicle at lower speeds (in parking lot) nearly impossible and improbable after narrowly missing a ditch instead of a driveway of the hotel. The following morning made appt. With gm dealer to evaluate, while en route (approx. 4 miles) the steering became more and more difficult to turn, when we approached the dealership, the steering wheel needed to be turned several times under extreme duress (as if there was hardly any movement of the steering rack itself) only to slightly turn the vehicle enough to get in the driveway and into the parking lot. Once the dealership was able to look at the vehicle, we were informed that the power steering unit had failed (not under warranty) and that because it failed it did not lubricate the steering rack properly therefore ruining and rendering the steering system inoperable. The repair has been quoted at $2600 with parts and 12 1/2 hours of labor. The steering system is an essential component to any vehicle, therefore we are greatly concerned for our safety and others due to the nature of this failure considering the vulnerability exhibited by the steering rack in the event of a power steering unit failure. I am absolutely befuddled that a vehicle that is only 4 years old, with less than 70,000 miles can have such a catastrophic failure. Had I not had the strength needed to fight the steering the vehicle could have easily failed to make a turn and certainly have been in an accident.
While driving at slow speed, our chevy Traverse's power steering fails to work and the vehicle becomes difficult to control. The problem has been getting worse and is almost always noticeable when parking and backing the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a chevy dealership and they stated the vehicle needed the power steering fluid changed. On the way home after the fluid service, the power steering briefly failed as I was making a left turn from being stopped. I had to slow in front of on coming traffic to regain control of the vehicle so I could safely complete the turn. I now feel the vehicle is unsafe for my family to ride in and poses a risk to the general public.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering intermittently failed while making a turn. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician was not able to duplicate or diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
The first incident occurred in late may. When turning a corner the steering became difficult to turn, and was even more difficult to return. I took the vehicle to the dealer in June. They had the car for eleven hours that day and performed some routine maintenance, but were unable to duplicate the issue. As we continued to drive the vehicle, the issue became more dangerous. The steering was becoming much more difficult to return to the straight position. I took the vehicle back to the dealer Aug 13. They informed me that the power steering pump was failing under load, and replaced it.
Power steering fails without warning when making turns, particularly at low speeds. Then as quickly as it fails, it will return again. The car now has 120,000 miles on it, but this issue started when it only had 50,000 miles on it, and was just out of warrantee. 3 different mechanics including the dealership and they have said they have no idea what the problem is as the power steering pump is working properly and the power steering reservoir is properly filled. The dealer actually told us it's just time for a new car guys. we have spoken in person to two other owners of Traverses and they describe the exact same problem.
2010 Chevrolet Traverse. Consumer writes in regards to air conditioner and power steering failure. The consumer also stated there was an issue with the power window and driver side seat.
Power steering failure at low speeds. Happens when turning from a stop at intersections and making low speed turns. Very scary situation. Multiple occurrences, spoke with shop and was told these vehicles have a lot of power steering problems. Very expensive fix.
The power steering began failing at low speeds and following stops. The wheel requires extrordinary effort to complete a turn, power steering returns after the vehicle speed increases. As with the other 2010 Traverses reporting on this site( now at well over 100) we would like some accountability on the part of the manufacturer. So far there has been no consensus on what is causing this failure in the power seering system. The ignorance of problems like this has caused damage, injury, and cost lives. To repeat, where is the accountability ?.
The power steering pump failed. There has been repeated grinding and steering issues over the ensuing 4,000 miles (6 mo) since the replacement. It seems that many other owners are experiencing this at 40 - 60k miles, past the lifetime of the warranty (3 yr / 36,000 miles).
While turning right at a corner the power steering unexpectedly stopped working and I had to muscle the steering wheel over to avoid colliding into a car that was stopped at the stop light. I don't believe my wife would have had the strength to do this since it happened so unexpectedly. I had a few more similiar occurences all at low speeds and when turning. When I brought it into the dealer I found out that the power steering pump was failing. The car is only 3 1/2 years old and since it's over the warranty I had to pay the very expensive cost of replacing the power steering pump. Since then when I've searched the internet I've seen numerous other complaints at around this mileage for the 2010 Traverse.
Notification that was sent to chevorlet's web site I recently purchased a used 2010 Traverse. Took it on the typical two mile test drive found no issues. After owning it now for several months I'm having problems with the power steering failing. It is usually at lower speeds when turning in driveway or parking lots. Today I was in the middle of sharp curve, low speed, approx. 35 mph, and the power steering went out just as another car was coming from the opposite direction. I was able to react properly and keep the vehicle on the roadway. My concern is that my teenage daughter who is just learning to drive would not have reacted properly in that situation and people could be serious injured and/or killed. My other concern is that this seems to be a common issue with this model, according to nhsta web site and many other Traverse owners web forums. I cannot afford to replace the steering system and this is my family's primary vehicle. I'm left with putting money over safety. Please document this complaint.
When driving at a low speed, the vehicle makes a terrible whining noise. I took it to the dealership in March 2014 and was told the power steering pump and rack need to be replaced which would cost me close to $3000 out-of-pocket, which I cannot afford. Upon researching, I saw numerous complaints regarding the same issue with the Traverse that have resulted in power steering failure. I also see that gm recalled chevy malibus and cobalts in March 2014 for the same issue, however, a recall was not issued for the Traverse. I feel this is a huge safety concern that gm should issue a recall for. Does there have to be fatality before they are held accountable?!?!.
The power steering has started failing at lower speeds, such as turning corners, turning into the driveway, and pulling into parking spaces. This is dangerous! what the heck is chevy going to do about this? two of my neighbors had the exact same issue and were told by the dealer to "trade it off". We love the vehicle, but can't keep putting our family in danger. Repeat, what is chevy going to do about this? the more I research online, it seems that almost all of the 2010 Traverse's have this same problem. Recall????.
Vehicle power steering fails completely and intermittently at low speeds. This is an extremely urgent safety concern and a recall must be issued to correct this issue.
The power steering has started failing at lower speeds, such as turning corners, turning into the driveway, and pulling into parking spaces. This is a dangerous scenario and is getting worse and worse. It is easily duplicated. My mechanic says it is a common problem with the chevy Traverse and they see it all the time.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that the power steering failed while the steering wheel was being turned. The dealer stated that the power steering fluid needed to be flushed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 40,000.
Power steering abruptly failed on multiple occasions when making turns at approximately 25 mph or less causing near collisions over the course of a couple weeks. . Frequency continued to increase so it happened multiple times on a daily basis. Took to local dealership and they couldn't find problem so changed power steering fluid and flushed system. Later that same day the same problem occurred again. I am concerned to let my wife drive the vehicle. Dealership thinks the power steering pump needs to be replaced. Searched online and it appears many Traverse owners are experiencing similar issues. Is there a potential recall on this issue ?.
At slow speeds the power steering fails. This is very dangerous because it usually occurs in parking lots. Why is there no recall since this is a common and dangerous problem???.
Upon trying to park the car, the power steering failed. Continues to do this when either parking or turning.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that the power steering failed intermittently. The contact also mentioned that the steering wheel seized causing the vehicle to become difficult to maneuver. The failure continued to become progressively worse over time. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Power steering fails in turns at low speed, or when trying to park. Can still "horse the wheel if sufficient strength and realize what is happening. Has steadily gotten worse (occurs more often), but I'm not fixing it till completely fails.

I purchased our 2010 Traverse new in September of 2009. We have experienced the power steering failure and replacement 3 times. The power steering gear was replaced at 9500 miles, at 35,000 miles, and now it is out again at 48,000 miles. I have a check engine light that won't go off, now they are telling me my timing chain needs replaced based on the codes detected from the computer. I have tried to get gm, and or a local dealer to work with me on these on going issues, and they could care less.
