1 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2023

This vehicle is dangerous. Looks great on the outside but horrible on the inside under the hood! since my son bought one for me it’s had problems with engine revving and not shifting gears, and air conditioner continually going out even after repairs, and power steering leaks. I kept taking it to repair and oddly no technician anywhere could help! read the reviews and watch the youtubes! this vehicle (all years) should be stripped from the market and considered under lemon law no matter the age! the culmination of my problems happened when leaving town, entering highway and accelerating and clicking cruise control! immediately the car revved past 7 rpms and out of control! I had all I could do to stop it - then it died completely! the tow truck driver was also in an unsafe situation with many cars passing at high speed when he had to put special lifts on the back wheels! scary! towed to local chevy dealer and without giving us the computer codes and no actual written estimate for repairs, they bluntly said metal shavings in engine and possibly a bearing and $11,500. And it’s typical for transmission problems and steering so up to $18,500! really?! and if no one could ever detect and fix it before, how can they now? all this with the added comment, we can’t guarantee once we get into it that it will run properly and not need more repairs! lemon! this is a very unsafe vehicle with notorious problems all in the face of competing with looks of other competitor cars! I praise god I was alone when this happened and no other passengers. If you love your life, family, and others, definitely join me in this recall / removal from market effort. Don’t take my opinion, read the huge number of complaints by many other owners and past owners of any and every chevy Traverse! horrifying! thank you for reading and acting! god bless you!.

2 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2023

Power steering is going out. Will only turn when rmps are up. Just bought car a few months ago.

3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2023

No power steering at low speed . Makes it dangerous to turn sharp corners. Almost impossible to park in a parking spot if there’s other vehicles. So I park way out away from vehicles . I have had two power steering pumps and lines replaced . And still have the same issue. .

4 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2023

Two items: item 1. Transmission switched to neutral by itself traveling at 65 mph. At about 5-6 seconds after the incident, transmission resumed with no further problem. This has happened 3 times. First time was mid 2022. Second and third times happened in late 2022. Appeared to be an intermittent problem. Took to dealership. It happened to a mechanic who drove the vehicle. Dealership thought they fixed the problem. A dealership mechanic, while addressing item number 2 below in 3rd week of April 2023, experienced the motor going into neutral. They had replaced the ignition switch to possibly fix item #2, and were test driving the car, when during the test drives, the motor went into neutral by itself two separate test drives. Item 2. While driving at highway speeds on a freeway in mid February 2023, the engine stopped (speedometer and rpm gauges went to zero). The whole dashboard went black. Power steering was lost. Was lucky to be able to pull over to side of road and stop. Turning ignition key off and on did not restart the car. Took ignition key out, replaced the ignition key, and the car started right up and we were able to continue our journey. This has happened 3 times total so far since February 2023. It has happened at random times. The dealership has not seen any computer feedback to indicate what is wrong for item 1 or item 2 here. So now, there is a new ignition switch, and we are hoping item 2 will not happen on a freeway, or on a crowded road, or anywhere!. I feel fortunate we had a way to pull off to the side of the road. If I was in a middle lane, I don’t know what could have happened. It could have been a pileup accident.

5 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2022

I was driving at approximately 30mph on a road the traction control/stability track light came on and my car lost almost all power. It went from 30 to about 5mph. Thankfully I was on a slower road and close to my house so I was able to get home. If I would have been on a highway I could have been killed. I quick google search showed thousands of other complaints with the same problem, my question is why is nothing being done. Are they waiting for a certain number of deaths??.

6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2022

I have now been told that my rack and pinion is leaking by 3-4 different mechanics. In doing a google search, I see that through various years of the chevy Traverse, the rack and pinion leaking and needing to be replaced at a high cost (and also being a big safety risk to not replace) is a very common issue in the Traverse.

7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2021

The steering on vehicle is intermittently nearly impossible to turn. Gm has a service bulletin that addresses problem and extends warranty. My vehicle is beyond the warranty time but still under the mileage. I called gm and the will not offer any assistance of warranty or cost share. This should be a recall as it’s a serious safety issue!! there’s likely been injuries and deaths because of this very problem. You never know when it may act up and when it does it’s extremely dangerous. Gm customer service reference # 9-6768504646. Let me know if there’s something you can do to help and/or if not. Thanks.

8 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2020

The steering to so hard in to car when trying to turn. Like car chooses when to loosen up or not.

9 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2020

Sometimes when trying to turn the steering wheel locks up and makes it really hard to turn sometimes when doing so it loosens up all of a sudden causing it to jerk/ turn to fast which could cause and accident. A lot of times when taking off the Traverse does not want to shift then having to pull over on the side of road to put in park and put back in gear then go and also sometimes when driving the car shifts really hard jerking the vehicle when shifting!! the 2nd row heat/ air controls get really hot even when not in use.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2019

After some major maintenance work summer of 2018, car began to show more work needed. Summer of 2019 while driving on flat city road, power steering became difficult to turn & control curves and, check engine light came on. Parked the car until able to repair. Mechanic repaired power steering module car seemed ok. After about 2-3 weeks, check engine light & power steering problems again , now engine power reduced while driving w/stabilitrak warning & back up cam sometimes works. Whle driving , hard to turn on curves, corners and at appropriate posted speeds bc engine slows on its own and wont give enough power for flats or hills. Heating takes much longer to warm cabin and window button sometimes wont work.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2019

Stabilitrak continues to pop up affecting sed etc I have already spent over $2000 replacing parts and it continues.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2019

Tried to call NHTSA number for assistance. It is disconnected. Need to update complaint number 11205680. Date occurred is inaccurate and want it to be accurate if questioned by representative. Accidentally put April 19th as timing chain problem date. It was actually April 25th. Please update.

Steering becomes difficult from time to time. More often when reversing or parallel parking.

18 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

I took my car to the dearler in waldorf maryland when I went to pick up my car I noticed the front end was down, I drove like I was on a tractor. It was not this way when I dropped it off. I have 3 different people that can vouch for this. The dealer ship nor gm will give me an answer. The asst ser mgt said if the mechanic failed to say something he apologized . When on the phone with gm the dealer ship would not talk to me on the phone for an explaintion but said we did nothing to your car but would not ralk on the phone only proving to be hiding something of the truth.

19 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2018

Check engine light displays then engine power reduced warning comes on, causing the vehicle to slow at any time (very dangerous when on the freeway). The throttle needle and car shakes and car will cut off and stall to turn on again.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2018

Power steering stopped working while parking at low speed. Took the car to a chevy dealer and they couldn't find anything diagnostically wrong with it. Very disconcerting.

21 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2017

Power steering and timing chain failed in vehicle at 74k miles. There are several complaints regarding the same issues from other owners of this vehicle. General motors has not accepted responsibility for this issue which has been widely reported. While in motion on November 4, 2017, our vehicle became difficult to maneuver eventually shutting off. Upon trying to restart the vehicle we heard a grinding sound. We immediately pushed the vehicle to a near by reputable repair shop. Upon their evaluation it was determined the timing chain was faulty and needed to be replaced. We contacted general motors to inform them of the issue, they responded by having us to tow our vehicle to don brown Chevrolet in saint louis missouri. General motors asked us to authorize don brown to "break down" the vehicle in which we agreed. We were then informed because of a cost analysis being performed by general motors and don brown, a break down of the vehicle was not necessary and nothing would be done by the manufacturer to repair the power steering or timing chain. It is widely reported old timing chains were installed in 2009-2011 chevy Traverse which has led to several engine failures and inoperable vehicles of consumers across the country. It is irresponsible for general motors to have not issued a recall on these vehicles with timing chains that stretch and cause engine damage. General motors has placed a hardship on families when they refuse to cover the very expensive cost of these repairs. We purchased our vehicle less than 2 years ago from a chevy dealer and to have it to become impossible to steer and shut off in traffic is very dangerous and needs to be investigated. General motors has not offered any relief with an issue known to them. Being out of warranty and not purchasing an extended warranty should exclude defects as in the ones stated in this complaint.

22 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2017

Traveling aprox 55mph. Loss of steering and braking power. Vehicle ended up in a ditch and now no longer running. Accident claim made with geico.

23 Steering problem

Everytime when the steering wheel is turned, it makes a grinding noise. It keeps getting worse. Even when the steering wheel is barely turned.

24 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2017

At low speeds turning left or right the steering locks up and is difficult to turn. Cannot always make a turn as expected and must make wide turn into on-coming traffic but usually able to stop in time. Happens randomly. Has been happening since we bought the car @ 1 year.

25 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. On several occasions, while driving low speeds, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to phillips Chevrolet (9700 w Lincoln hwy, frankfort, IL 60423 (815) 469-2323) for a routine service check. The technician did not locate any diagnostic codes and the failure could not be replicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

26 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2017

At slow speed attempting to turn the steering get so stiff you need two hand to turn the steering wheel. Most time notice the problem at 5-10 mph. Turning both right and left into a parking space or from a stop to turn onto a street.

27 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2017

The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

29 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2017

Under 35mph, the steering gets very difficult, making the car very difficult to control. It happens frequently, in parking lots, exiting and entering lots. And you never know when, until you are mid-turn, causing you to use extreme effort to maneuver. It made me very fearful and a bit panicked that I would not be able to prevent an accident, if one were pending. It has been increasingly difficult and more frequent since the date listed below.

30 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2017

The power steering will go out intermediately while driving on turns. The power steering has been doing this since I purchased the vechile but put today's date as the date of issue.

31 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

There is a steering warranty on this vehicle for default in steering up to 150,000 miles. I've owned my car little over a year and it wasn't until it broke and I went through the process of getting it fixed that I became aware of the warranty. I'm now 6000 miles over and have no vehicle. I realize I'm over the mileage a little but I don't understand why this wasn't a full recall for safety reasons in the first place!however I feel Chevrolet should help cover a decent portion of the repair. Is there anything thing you can do to help. It's a very expensive process. And very dangerous for everyone on the road. It about slung me into a dump truck while taking my kids to school one morning and then would hardly turn at all even in a slight curve.

32 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. While driving various speeds, the power steering malfunctioned and the vehicle became difficult to steer without warning. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 169,539.

33 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2017

Steering is stiff and very hard to turn at low speed or stopped.

34 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2016

Eps system is defective no power steering at low speed or when engine is idling cannot turn car at low speed makes whining noise at high speed.

35 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2016

Power steering suddenly goes out at low speeds, when coasting, very hard to turn from a stopped position until you start going, slowing down for curves or turns it goes out as well, all on normal paved roads. It is nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel which when going 45 mph and you take your foot off the gas to coast around a curve, the steering wheel becomes so stiff I veared into the other lane of oncoming traffic just fighting the steering wheel. Hitting the brakes made it even worse. Extremely dangerous!!.
