1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2020

Rack and pinion is loose and wore out. Power steering does good turning to the right way but it is very hard to turn to the left. Acts like it grabs turning to the left, it does this every time I drive or a mechanic drives the car, 2010 chevy transverse.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

June 2016, approx. 114,000 mi - felt a lurch in stop & go traffic; flashed "service stabilitrak," "service traction control," "backup alerts = off". The check engine light appeared. A few miles down the road when traffic sped up, I realized I only had one gear and could not accelerate above 60mph. A serious problem on the interstate! several hours later, the check engine light remained on, but the car drove normally -- straight to the repair shop, where it was deemed to need $2400 in transmission repair due to the following fault codes: p182e & c0561. They will replace the transmission mode shift sensor and the transmission control module. The mechanic also informed us that we will eventually need a $700 repair for the control arms in the rear suspension -- ge has corrected a known fault in the parts. All this is on top of a $3000 repair done in April 2015 at 92,500 mi. For known steering defects. In that case, as the Traverse warmed up, the power steering got hard to turn. Gm repaired part of the problem at no cost, replacing power steering pump and gear housing. Another mechanic completed the replacement of the rack and pinion assembly that was also part of the problem. These are both substantial defects and repairs needed in a vehicle that was expected to last much longer before needing more than routine maintenance.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2015

The problem with this vehicle is loss of power steering when driving at low to speed especialy when turning in either direction. I started having this problem at around 80 k miles and its getting progressively worse. Now it does this when not driving. I took it to the dealer where I purchaced this vehicle. , jba Chevrolet in glen burnie , MD. I was told that Chevrolet was not coveing the cost of the power steering pump or the rack and pinion even though there are hundreds of travese owners with this same problem . This is truely a safety issue , not knowing when you could lose the ability to steer . !!!! and in my case at any speed.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2015

Chevy recalled two parts in the Traverse line, a power steering pump and another part related to the steering. Recall number 14329. When these parts fail they can cause the rack and pinion to also fail. I have mentioned this to numerous technicians and they all back this claim up. Our power steering completely failed and chevy replaced the parts but this failure caused the rack and pinion to fail which chevy is taking no responsibility to replace.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2014

July 2014 my Traverse had around 67,000 miles on it, and it had started overheating. We took it to a Chevrolet dealership and had the issue taken care of. We had also asked them to address the recalls that we had received notice on. One issue was fixed, and on the invoice they had made note that they would contact us when the other recall parts were in. For 2 months, no phone call from them. We had received no call that the parts were in. Then the end of September while driving back from the coast, I heard a noise that sounded like a cap being clicked by a teen. Blamed my niece, but after reading the legal documents on the lawsuit, it had to have been the same thing. The next issue that would be what I consider the last straw with this vehicle. In the next day or so, it became hard to turn at low speeds. We checked steering fluid, and it was low but no where near empty. We added additional fluid and thought that was the fix. The steering issue continued to worsen. Driving into work I needed to turn off the main hwy onto a st. , during the morning rush hour. I was barely able to make the turn. It took all I could do to turn. Was very scary, and I was thankful that our children were not in the car. When I arrived to work, I was unable to pull into the parking lot of the office. I ended up having to park on the st due to being unable to effectively turn. We took the Traverse to a different Chevrolet dealership to find out that the pump, rack and pinion, strut and cv boot were failing. Found this to be very odd, most often a cv boot wears out on a vehicle with higher miles than the 70,000miles. Cost to repair is at $2500. 00, due to Chevrolet for the neglect. Now we are looking for a different vehicle and they only want to offer 14,000 trade in?a $40,000 vehicle worth near 1/4 of what we have paid for it in only 4 years. It is now worth nothing, but I'm upside down on an loan!.

8 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2014

Bought a 2010 Traverse 2 weeks ago. Only 14,145 miles, had the steering pump and rack and pinion changed already. Still making weird noise. Surely there needs to be a recall, is gm waiting for fatalities first?.

9 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2014

Steering has become difficult. Recently becoming harder to turn. Vehicle is garage kept and noticed a pink puddle of fluid. This turned out to be the power steering fluid. We took to a mechanic friend who put vehicle up on a rack. He advised that the rack and pinion need to be replaced. I am terrified to drive this vehicle now. He says it will cost $1200 to fix. We don't have that kind of money. Chevy needs to put a recall on this before someone gets hurt. I love love my Traverse but am afraid to drive with my children or anyone for that matter. Please insist on a recall.

10 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Currently at low speeds trying to manuever in traffic, parking, etc. , there is complete loss of power steering. Steering is not returned with increased engine rpm. Because of the conection of rack and pinion and actual manual steering it is virtually impossible to steer the vehicle. General motors declines to recognize there is an issue. Dealer ship denied any knowledge of a problem but a mechanic told the cs rep that some people were having success with increased engine rpm. Hmmmm strange if they never heard of the problem before. How many people have to be injured or killed? I read on the internet of similar complaints from many people. It was suggested ther could be low power steering fluid. This was not true but fluid was topped off.

13 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

While driving into parking lot, slowing down, the power steering failed and I was no longer able to steer the Traverse, unless I applied power (accelerated on the gas pedal). I brought the vehicle into the dealership. They diagnosed the problem as a leaking power steering pump and the rack and pinion was faulty, both which needed to be replaced (at significant cost, over $2,000).

14 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2014

Went to pick up my car from inspection and technician had difficulty steering the car in the lot. Diagnosed as possible electric pump steering issue. Already have been told I needed to replace rack & pinion but used leak stop and so far has been holding. Car can't even be steered to get out of parking lot. How much money will this cost now? I feel Chevrolet has many cars with similar issues. It is time for them to take responsibility.

16 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

Power steering goes out intermittently at low rates of speed, while trying to make turns, can not turn the steering wheel when it does this, I have taken my Traverse to the local dealership 3 times but because it's out of warranty they want me to pay $1000 for parts plus labor charges to have the rack & pinion as well as the power steering pump fixed. I called gm directly 800-222-1020 and asked why so many complaints have been made but there hasn't been a recall issue & they said that people aren't reporting this issue through the dealership, so I suggest that if you have a Traverse with these problems you contact your local gm dealer ASAP!!!!! hopefully we can get some assistance with the prices of this!.

17 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2014

At about 53000 miles my wife started to notice a small intermittent whining sound coming from the front end. Now we loose steering at low speeds like turning a corner( very dangerous). It is going to the dealer on Monday, I am guessing we will need a new rack and pinion.

18 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2014

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, there was an abnormal grinding noise heard whenever completing a turn. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that there was no defect with the vehicle. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who then advised that the steering rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the dealer did not properly diagnose the vehicle until after the warranty had expired. The manufacture was made aware of the failure and declined to provide further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 140.

19 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

This vehicle was taken to champion Chevrolet for a recall for a failing water pump seal. During that analysis, the power steering pump and rack assembly was found to be low on oil and with metal shavings in the pinion rack was near failure. The failure mode on this model and all Traverses, enclaves, and acadias is the ultimately steering lock and a probably crash. This is a definite recall item that should be finally determined by NHTSA for all years of this vehicle. The repair estimate is over $2600 as the entire front engine assembly has to be removed. Other owner experiences indicate that this repair is widespread in these gm models and is a serious safety issue.

20 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2013

My wife drove her vehicle (this vehicle) home, and noticed once she slowed down in our subdivision that she virtually lost all ability to control the steering of her car. She was able to make it in to our garage at great effort on her end! later that day, we attempted to drive it again and simply could not budge or with great difficulty the steering wheel. It begun to snow that afternoon and so we did not persist getting on the road. We did a few days later and noticed that at slightly higher speeds the handling of the vehicle improved, but at lower speeds we again we unable to steer the car. Research online revealed many other owners with similar experience. There is no recall. Repair blogs on this vehicle have had owners replace their rack and pinion, power steering pump, and power steering gear. Our dealer informed us the pump had to be replaced and recommended we replace the gear, we could not afford this. We have not yet driven the now "repaired" vehicle. Gm advised us to contact NHTSA!.

21 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2013

There is a recall for the same issue that 90% of the steering issues noted on this site is for but not for the Traverse. Here are the details. We need to call gm or the safety numbers and fight to get this fixed! this is clearly an issue. We were quated 1700 to replace the rack and pinion. Lithia motors was terrible to work with. We bought the car on 11/21/2013 and noted the problem to them in less than a week after purchase and they told us they would take care of us. If I had known they wouldn't then I would have returned the car to them. I will never deal with them again and don't recommend it to anyone else! report receipt date: Mar 31, 2014 NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000 component(s): steering potential number of units affected: 1,340,447 all products associated with this recall vehicle makemodelmodel year(s)chevroletcobalt2010chevrolethhr2009-2010chevroletmalibu2004-2006,2008-2009chevroletmalibu maxx2004-2006pontiacg62005-2006,2008-2009saturnaura2008-2009saturnion2004-2007 details general motors llc (gm) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet malibu, 2004-2006 malibu maxx, 2009-2010 hhr (non-turbo), 2010 cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn aura and 2004-2007 ion, and 2005-2009 pontiac g6. 24 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2013

I purchased a used 2010 chevy Traverse in January 2013 and 6 months later heard a whining noise in the vehicle. Had a local chevy dealer check the issue and they said there was a leak in the rack and pinion. Cost to fix was $1,600 and there was nothing the dealer would do to assist with costs because the warranty was expired. I could not spend that kind of money at that time and considering I just purchased the vehicle used 6 months prior it made me angry. I have yet to fix the problem and had it evaluated again by a different shop. . . Same cost $1,600. Very frustrating!!! was this a recall in 2011? any ideas on what to do? I am looking for assistance to contact gm for covering this issue.

25 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

Started losing power steering suddenly. This usually happens at low speeds, but not always. Took to dealer in louisville ky that wanted ~$1300 to fix stating the problem was a leak in the rack and pinion part of the steering mechanism.

26 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

I was turning into my driveway when the power steering locked. By very "brute force" I was able to force it back thus avoiding a collision with the retaining wall. Later in the week I took the car to a auto body repair to remove a minor dent. The owner of the repair shop experienced the same "lock" up when driving the car into his garage. I then when on line googled "2010 Traverse steering problems" I was taken back at the plethora of complaints and comments filed. I took the car to an independent mechanic and he & I reviewed the complaints. We concluded it was the rack & pinon thus it was replaced. No so. The lock up occurred again last evening when turning into my driveway. This morning I took it back to the mechanic. He is replacing the rack and pinion he put in yesterday and putting in a new power steering pump. Try "chatting" with a gm representative on line. They are experts at deflecting questions and giving you the run around. Since gm owes the united states$ & I am part of the us, the next step is to contact my senators and congress person and demand a recall of the Traverse' from this debtor.

27 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

I purchased a 2010 Traverse LS brand new from a dealer and am now having serious issues with the steering locking up. My wife was driving the Traverse into our neighborhood, as she turned off the main street into the nieghborhood the steering locked and she could not come out of the turn. She had to almost stop the vehicle completely for the steering to unlock so she could continue. She almost hit a parked car and was almost struck by another car as she had to stop half way through her turn to unlock the steering. The problem only continued to worsen, steering locking more often and causing numerous near misses. Almost striking cars, buildings, fences and curbs. It mostly happens at slower speeds, 35mph or less and has caused us to hit our garage trying to pull in or out. It has, however happened a few times at higher speeds while driving through curves on the highway and city streets, 45-70 mph. Was taken to the dealer in December 2013 and diagnosed as rack and pinion issue. Rack and pinion has been replaced twice(not under warranty) and the problem still exists. I have done research online line and this is happening to many people that own Traverse, acadia, enclave and outlooks all with te same steering components. Something needs to be done to get gm to rectify this issue before someone has to die or be seriously injured due to this problem.

28 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2013

At low speeds, loss of power steering. Requires extra force to turn steering wheel. Took to dealer and dealer replaced rack and pinion, and did not fix problem. Charged 1200. 00.

29 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2013

Difficult to turn at slow speeds. While I had it at dealer for other recall issues I was told the rack and pinion system was bad and needed to be replaced at my cost as it was not a recall. I was told this was a very dangerous driving situation. I asked if that were the case why gm doesn't have a recall for it. A car that was only 3 yrs. Old and under 60,000mi. Should not have this problem. I googled what would cause this to go out in such a short time frame and read that most likely it was not greased or assembled properly! a friend who had the same make and model had to replace hers at her cost. This should be a recall issue as it is a dangerous driving problem. As far as electrical problems while driving the back seat heat control will sometimes just randomly turn on. Gm should back their work on this rack and pinion steering defect!.

30 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2013

We are having the same problems and issues that so many other owners have listed on the site. The power steering goes out at random times with no set pattern, rhyme, or reason. However, as many others have noted, it seems to mostly occur at low speeds(less than 25mph), going into curves, and parking lots. Ours began to do this about three months ago. The most frightening event occured when my wife was driving with our three young children and the steering became so stiff and unresponsive while negotiating a curve on the highway she nearly veered off the road. I took the Traverse to a certified independent mechanic that I have used for 20 years and trust completely, he could find no problems. The computer codes came back showing no issues and the power steering fluid was at recommended levels. This is a major hazard that needs to be addressed immeadiately before someone is seriously injured. There is obviously a flaw somewhere with the vast number of complaints that have been filed. I noticed a pattern of so many owners taking the Traverse to a dealer to have either the power steering and/or rack and pinion replaced, but to no avail as the problems with the steering still persisting. I am old enough to have driven older model vehicles and farm implements that did not have power steering and on the random, unsuspecting occasions when this problem arises the difficulty of handling this Traverse is well beyond attempting to maneuver one of those machines. The steering virtually locks up. My wife is 5' 110lbs. And I am 6' 200lbs. And it takes everything I have to turn the wheel when this happens. I am no longer comfortable with my wife driving this vehicle, especially with my three young children in tow. A solution needs to found ASAP. Otherwise unfortunately, my patriotic feelings will subside and I will go back to buying Honda products again.

31 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2013

While traveling below 15 mph the power steering stops working and requires a strong effort to turn the wheel. The problem has not gone away and is getting more frequent. I took it to the dealer on on 8 August 2013 and was told that I would have to replace the power steering pump and the rack and pinion (cost approximately $1,500). I asked if this was a common problem and the service tech said know. Now I have found out is is a common problem.

Failure Date: 04/15/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, there was a loss of power steering without warning. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that both the power steering pump and the rack and pinion would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

33 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2013

The vehicle is hard to turn at low speeds. Took it to the dealer and their diagnoses was that the rack and pinion needed changing at a cost over $700. 00. Had new rack and pinion installed at a mechanics shop for less.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was 45,000.

35 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

When turning from left to right steering became difficult and the rack and pinion was making a roaring sound. Sales auto cherv dealer fix the problem. I am concern that the rack and pinion might start leaking and cause me to have an accident. This should be a major concern of general motors. After reading the incident reports, this must be happening to all of the treverses. Some owners have no clue. After three months being the cheverolet Traverse owner this happen and I have had to have it checked each time I go for service. Please have general motors to look into this issue regarding the steering of the front rack and pinion. Chevrolet owner.
