Vehicle: 2021 Chevrolet Traverse problem: persistent “shift to park” message when vehicle is in park I own a 2021 chevy Traverse and have experienced repeated incidents where the dashboard displays “shift to park” even though the gear shifter is securely in the park position. This prevents me from turning the vehicle off and has caused battery drain and confusion about whether the car is fully secured. This issue is clearly known by gm, as evidenced by a technical service bulletin (TSB #19-na-206 and others). It affects multiple model years and has prompted a class action lawsuit. Despite the widespread nature of this defect, gm has not issued a recall. I believe this issue presents a safety concern, particularly for drivers unaware that the car may not fully power down, and due to the potential for battery drain and immobilization. I urge NHTSA to investigate whether a recall is warranted.

I have a 2014 chevy Traverse I got December 2024. Up until 4/16/2025 I noticed a little cutting in and out of the radio and of course took it as the connection being back but yesterday after working I notice my radio isn’t giving out sound , my blinkers not giving sound and neither is my back up camera or seatbelt notifier. I’ve seen a ton of forums online where people are complaint of this same problem so I’m sure since 2014 this issue has been brought up. The question is what is chevy going to do about it. This fix could be costly. I did get my fuses checked and nothing is bad in that area. What will chevy recommend me to do?.

Front lights started dimming about the middle of April 2025 and now both back lights are out at the same time on June 3rd 2025. The car makes a rough grinding noise as it switches gears.

Rear cross traffic alert system not working. No alerts when backing up and oncoming traffic.

Purchased car Tuesday, Thursday night upon pressing the start button all power went out on car. Driving to dealership to have car looked at vehicle shutoff completely at traffic light. Vehicle restarted then two miles from dealership car had multiple warnings and brakes completely went out. Managed to get car off the road safely, currently awaiting tow.

The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated while driving 35-40 mph, the vehicle stalled. The message "power reduction" was displayed, and the check engine and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The contact stated that the vehicle was able to restart; however, upon attempting to drive, the vehicle shuddered, and the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact scanned the vehicle with a vehicle scanner and retrieved dtc: p1682; which indicated an emission switch circuit fault. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 97,000.

The vehicle does not recognize when the vehicle is shifted to park. It states “shift to park” when the vehicle is already shifted to park. When this happens and the push to start button is pressed to shut the vehicle off, the vehicle will not shut off which becomes a major issue as the car continues to run and the vehicle’s battery will die since the vehicle will not fully shut off. This is a safety hazard because the vehicle can end up with a dead battery when this happens. I’ve looked this issue up online and it is a common issue that chevy has failed to address.

Received a warning on my dashboard when trying to turn off vehicle that vehicle was not in park. The vehicle however was in park. Vehicle would not turn completely off. Had to keep turning vehicle on and messing with shifting, turning it back off until it finally recognize it was in park. Have not taken it to a shop yet.

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while his wife was attempting to turn off the vehicle, the vehicle failed to turn off. The message "shift to park" was displayed on the screen. The vehicle was left running for thirty minutes before the contact's wife was able to turn off the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

Bought it back in July. Had it taken back that first month for the 3rd row headrest issue. Then the check engine light kept coming on, 1st time they said it was a cylinder misfire code, they rest it and said try getting gas from a different station. . Light came on 3 more times, but by the time we took it in, they “can’t replicate the issues”. Then the tire sensors went out, took it in and they had to order a new sensor. Then this past weekend we lost total power steering while driving 40+mph. Then it happened again the next day, but this time we lost complete control, entire car shut down, screens off, no breaks, no power steering, no nothing. We let it coast to a stop then put it in park. Took it to the dealership the following morning. They read a bunch of codes. Said they’d call with an update later that day. Now it’s been 3 days, and they can’t replicate the issues and are at a loss as to why it happened or how to fix it to prevent it from happening again. Said it might be something to do with central computer system.

I had to replace the timing chain. I had to replace the torque converter. New issues: interior lights on the dash and radio have been going out while driving. Message center warning has been not working sometimes when using remote start in winter. Sometimes it just goes blank while driving.

I was driving along the highway way at 60-65 mph when suddenly service traction control came on and vehicle started jerking and slowing down. As I tried to accelerate it continued to jerk and then just shut off completely. I hit the guard rail/ jersey wall on the drivers side because I had no control of the vehicle due to the vehicle shutting down. Upon taking it to the dealer after getting it home they stated it could be the junction box which is a known issue but they don’t see anything wrong with it and can’t duplicate the problem. I’ve contacted various mechanics and get that it’s an electrical issue that Chevrolet is aware of but refuses to place a recall for it. I could have gotten seriously injured if not killed by this problem and safety issue.

Purchased vehicle brand new. Six months and 10,000 miles later vehicle giving codes that say key missing / check for key. Then another that says key not found put key in center console left cupholder. When the key not found error or key missing error comes on the vehicle will not start. Thankfully this issue happened when I was local as this could strand the occupants in potentially dangerous situations (heat/cold weather, remote locations, ect. ). This also prevents the vehicle from shifting into neutral for towing purposes, therefore forces the tow company to "drag" the vehicle onto the flatbed and "shake" the vehicle off the flatbed as the wheels are locked. This happened on and off, sometimes once a day and sometimes can not start car at all that day. The vehicle has been at the dealership for two months now as they have not be able to fix the issue. The dealership has been able to reproduce the problem and has confirmed it is a problem. Gm has been contacted about the issue as well. This is the exact same issue as NHTSA id number: 11645578.

Car is constantly getting the shirt to park error message when the car is in park. The car’s lights and other electrical panels on the inside will not shut off because of this issue.

This vehicle reports a "shift to park" error message when parking the car. The gearshift is in the parked position but the sensor if not responding correctly. The alarm continues to buzz and we are unable to turn the car off and exit the vehicle. We must continue to "wiggle" the gear shift and even drive around the block and try to park again to have this message stop. Very afraid that the car is not recognizing the "parked" position and will move even though we think it is parked. We understand that this has been an issue with Chevrolet since 2017 and no recall has been issued. Please help.

Driverside turn signal has gone out 2x within a year and item is now back ordered with no eta. The first time this happened was 02/2025 the second time 8/2025.

Car showing that car is not in park and constantly kills battery. Shift to park warning, antilock brake warning, parking brake warning, and forward collision warning continue to come on. Dealer says now partially covered under extended warranty after deductible, but battery needs replacement for $375.

I recently had my alternator fixed and the torque converter last year. I was having issues with the battery staying charged, car would jerk, radio, heat and air would shut off and come back on, car would go in reverse although I'm trying to go forward, shift to park warning message when car was in park and there are shortages out something that will connect and disconnect the bluetooth when I'm on calls via bluetooth. I picked my car up from love Chevrolet 1/28/2025. Everything seemed fine but the car still jerked when I would take off at lights, make turns or go up hills. The shift to park message is still happening. When I park the car and turn it off the car makes a sound and the warning pops up. The car lights will not go off when this happens. I have to turn the car off and on or take it out of park a few times for it to stop. I'm afraid to leave the car with that warning on because the doors won't lock and I'm afraid it will roll. Love Chevrolet said they didn't see the error message for it while they were driving but it constantly happens to me. Even when I turn the car on to warm it up it gives me that error message.

Frequently receive warning message “shift to park” while the car is already at a complete parked state. You have to engage brake and wiggle the shifter to allow car to shut off. Another issue, the car display comes on and the car alarm beeps regarding the stabilitrak. This happens on colder days usually below 40 degrees. Dealership wants $200+ to evaluate but states common concern they receive.

My car came up with an alert message when I started the vehicle, "service battery charging system vehicle may stall". I assumed using my remote start had somehow drained my battery or that the cold weather (30 degrees) was affecting my battery. I began driving hoping the battery would charge once running. Another alert came up, "battery saver active". The alerts repeated again. In less than 10 miles from where I first started, I made it to a les schwab where I asked them to check my battery. The guy ran out and said my battery had more juice not running. They told me to take it to service repair shop close by. I began driving to the nearest shop and my car jerked/stopped/died, the steering was locked up and I lost complete control of the vehicle but luckily I was not far out of the les schwab parking lot and was able to coast into another parking area. I had to have my car towed to the repair shop where they told me it would cost $1,600 to replace the alternator, I luckily have a platinum extended warranty and it appears to be covered. I am so thankful that I was not on a highway at the time and that I took the alert seriously and responded immediately. My 14 year old was in the car with me and it really scared her that the car jerked and stopped. The amount of time I had from receiving the alert to a dead battery was very short. This should not happen and I'm so glad that I was driving versus an up and coming driver (turns 15 next week) that would not have known what to do. I've done my research and this issue has been mentioned in several chats regarding owners experiences for Traverses' around the 30,000 mile mark, my car is at 40,000 miles and was serviced at 30,000. I'm honestly not sure I can ever trust my vehicle after this experience. Others have said that they fixed the issue only to have it happen again.

Transmission issues vehicle drives forward when in reverse vehicle will no go into reverse vehicle will not drive or go into reverse.

Multiple issues have occurred with this vehicle. I have had major unsafe issues while driving while on the freeway and streets where my vehicle reads traction control off and engine power reduced which leads my vehicle to lose all power and shut down being stranded and almost hit multiple times while by myself and while my husband and children are present. I believe I am the second or third owner of this vehicle and I was never given any information about any recalls.

When I push the button to turn off vehicle it dings and says shift to park. I cannot stop it from doing it. One day my vehicle did it for 45 minutes. I could not do anything lock my door anything this is a hazard what if I was out of town and someone tried to steal my car because it would not stop doing this. I see on social media this is happening to a lot of 2019 chevy Traverse owners.

I own a 2018 chevy Traverse and have been experiencing an issue with the stabilizer trak. When my vehicle goes in idle, occasionally I am getting an alert to check the stabilizer trak. I have reached out to several mechanics and they have all stated that this is a common problem with the 2018 and 2019 chevy Traverse. This is a safety issue with this vehicle and I’m wondering how there is no recall for it with it being a common issue found. This issue caused issues with controlling our vehicles, will Chevrolet take action.

I took my truck to the dealer back in 2022 for the specific reasons that the truck is being recalled now but my vehicle doesn’t qualify for the recalls. My vehicle has been having the same issues as the 2019 chevy Traverse recalls and I just saw that my truck is also leaking transmission oil which is linked to the 2019 recall but my truck doesn’t qualify. It started smelling like it was burning during the freeway drive today and when I got home, I noticed the oil leak I drive around 15 to 20 miles a day driving six children in my truck for safety and my truck is no longer safe to drive. I want to know why when I took my car in 2022 for the specific issues. They told me that it was pretty much all in my head that my truck was running fine and now I come to find out there are these recalls in effect, but my truck doesn’t qualify when the check engine light is on in my car for the specific reasons. I did contact the dealer where I took my truck in 2022 and they do have the paperwork to prove that I took my car and they told me someone would call me back to see what was going on. This was four days ago and nothing has happened and they also didn’t email me the paperwork like they told me they would.

The vehicle will not shut off and vehicle information screen states shift to park. When this happens we have 2 options. 1st to sit and wait for the vehicle to turn off(takes over an hour on average), 2nd disconnect the negative battery connection. The vehicle shuts down nearly instantly. Then reconnect the battery before being able to use the vehicle again.

The contact owned a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the contact discovered that the driver's side door, the driver's side seat, and the ceiling had caught on fire and was burned; the windshield was also cracked. The vehicle was unoccupied during the fire. A fire department report was filed the following day and the fire department inspected the vehicle and determined that the wiring was hot to the touch and could have possibly caused the fire; the vehicle was deemed totaled. The local dealer was not contacted. A police report was not filed. The vehicle remained at the residence. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 175,000.

Veh continues to display service stabilitrak when coming out of auto stop at a light or stop. Service restraint likely keeps coming on unable to buckle seat belts sometime seat get stuck when moving forward or backwards on driver side shift to park light keeps coming on service parking break is coming in as well for no apparent reason.

The component/system that is malfunctioning is coding p-0826. Dealership says replace transmission. Based on my experience with the vehicle, the transmission is not the main issue. There are symptoms of an electrical issue that is causing the vehicle to lose power, rough shift, stutter and hard shift. This situation began when traveling back from GA to nc. After having stopped at a rest stop, I proceeded to get back on the highway and the vehicle hesitated to accelerate as I merged on to the highway. There were no warming lights, dashboard signaling or anything that happened prior to this to warm of this unsafe issue. With traffic behind me already at speeds of 70mph+, this situation could potentially have caused an accident in which I would have been unable to avoid because the car decelerated, hesitated and did not leave me with anyway to maneuver out of the lane. I fortunately was in the merge lane, which I had to constantly tap on the accelerator in order to get the vehicle to shift into the next gear and finally surpass 40 mph so that I could get back on the highway, potentially being able to maintain a safe speed. The vehicle then jolted after reaching 40mph and then after tapping the accelerator again, I was able to increase my speed. Upon returning to nc, I sought mechanical services from the dealership. They had last serviced the vehicle in October 2024, an oil change and put an additive in the engine. The dealership not only was not helpful, but they were unable to diagnose an issue because the vehicle had no check engine light or any dashboard warnings during the entirety of this issue. It was suggested that I get the spark plugs changed, since they considered it may be a misfire within the system. The spark plug change made it worse, eventually the car shook violently while at a red light and the dashboard lights came on and the car did not exceed 15mph. The car was serviced again and the coils were replaced. The problem still persists.

Vehicle would not start. Towed to repair shop. 350a fuse blown that controls ignition system. Pulled starter to inspect for damage. Transmission flex plate had 7 broken teeth with a tooth being lodged in the starter housing.

This has happened three times . First time I was driving my vehicle on the street and randomly turned off . The second time this happened I was driving on the freeway at 66 mph & it randomly turned off and the speed was reduced on seconds. This incident was very dangerous to the point were I almost got hit with my family in the vehicle I needed a tow truck to take me home and it was super risky and dangerous because other vehicles were passing about 2 ft away from us and at a high speed. Third time this happened I almost got hit again due to the random shut off and loss of velocity and this time it was a very small gap and space I had and cars kept honking and cars were passing at a one ft distance . Once the lights turn on , on the dash board when it's barely a warning and recently pop up the vehicle automatically randomly turns off . The lights I get on the dashboard are stability track , traction control off , engine power is reduced , service stabilitrak, and check engine light . Has not been inspected .

I was driving to work at 0530 on 11/10/24. I was on the highway driving the speed limit. A light came on that read "service esc". Within 2 minutes of this light coming on, I heard a loud noise and the tail end of my car started to spin out. My power steering went out, my brakes did not work and I hit the guard rail very hard. The "electronic stability control" system in my car, turned off on me with only a minute warning, and almost killed me. My car was totaled and deemed a complete loss. Any advice would be appreciated.

3 times in 5 days, 2021traverse completely shut off. 2 of those times were in a busy intersection. I couldn’t even turn my flashers on and had to manually unlock my door to get out. Fortunately the third time was in my driveway. I called aaa to tow it to dealer. This is a severe safety issue and hopefully will be covered under my warranty and the extended bumper to bumper warranty.
