1 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 10/11/2021

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated while driving at 5 mph and turning into a parking spot, the steering wheel inadvertently lost power steering assist functionality. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated she was able to forcefully steer the steering wheel with the assistance of her son and the vehicle was parked. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they would be able to diagnose the vehicle in the next 3 weeks. The contact also stated that she noticed that the steering wheel would regain power steering functionality while the accelerator pedal was depressed and would lose power steering functionality after releasing the accelerator pedal. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

2 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 12/09/2019

I purchased a 2016 chevy Traverse lt new from the dealer. It has approx. 80k miles that are mostly "highway miles". I brought my Traverse into the dealer on 12-9-19 for a brake service and ask that they check the power steering which has been making "winding" noises during various turning radiuses. I was informed by the dealership of a TSB regarding the powering steering pump/line. Apparently due to a design flaw by gm, the power steering hose and a/c touch and during the normal operation of the vehicle, rub each other. This is known to produce a hole in the power steering line causing the power steering fluid to leak. This has the potential to cause the power steering pump to fail. Because of the design flaw, simply replacing the hose won't ultimately fix the issue. Furthermore. If the power steering pump fails while a driver is making steering inputs, it creates a high probably that a crash can occur resulting in serious bodily harm or death to the driver and others. I spoke to gm corp customer service on 12-9-19 and was told, they do not show to have a fix and because there is no recall for the issue, they do not plan to address it. I don't know how many lives it takes to initiate a recall, but I would hope that as a governing agency, you would not take this issue lightly. Thank you, eric bauer.

3 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 07/09/2019

Takata recall 2013 chevy Traverse ltz, 109k miles, I'm on my 3rd power steering pump. Bought used in July 2018, replaced the pump back in may 2019, I provided the pump and took it to the dealership where I bought it, they replaced it and charged me $600 for labor and the next day it out out again (turns out it was actually a bad pump, brand new but bad ) so the dealership said they'd swap it out for the cost of labor, I didn't have another $600 to throw away so I replaced it with some help and it worked perfectly, we used the dext. Iv fluid as suggested and it's been running great, no more whine and steers like a dream. Well it's now July 2019 and the pump is out again. No visible leaks and the fluid level is good and fluid still red. If I get rid of this I'm going back to Ford for a vehicle, this is my first Chevrolet and also my last. If the pump went out on the highway that would be incredibly dangerous. I drive all highway and it's my daily driver. I can still drive the vehicle, but when the rpms are low it's like manual steering, forget going through a drive through or parking up front anywhere!.

4 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 05/29/2019

Our 2016 chevy Traverse check engine light came on then it started blinking, we brought it too a chevy dealer and they told us the power steering pump was leaking and the fluid ran down the line and dripped in to the sensor box and shorted out all the sensors. Costing us out of pocket $2115. 04. This should not have happened. There were no signs of leaks or spots on our driveway or where the car is parked during the day. If you look under the hood of the Traverse you see nothing. There was no possible way for me too see this problem and catch it before the damage was done. There for this should have been covered under warranty and chevy basically told me to bad not covered.

5 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 03/10/2019

Just bought 2010 Traverse w/204xxx miles. Power steering pump started leaking at 205xxx. Vehicle was operating fine. No leaks, no noises or vibrations or anything. Drive 15 miles from home 1 day and after exiting highway, I noticed stiff steering and whining/groaning when turning steering wheel. Problem came on so quickly. Vehicle didn't want to turn and almost went into the ditch while I was attempting to make a turn. I quickly pulled over and checked under hood and under vehicle and noticed I was suddenly leaking steering fluid very quickly from pump. Took to local mechanic and was told I have a bad steering pump. They recommended I report this issue as they noticed that this pump had been replaced before and there have been many issues relating to my model year and similar models regarding faulty steering systems. Upon my research, I have seen numerous blogs and posts from other owners verifying this issue. Mileage on other models was 8xxx and up. With kids in my vehicle all the time, this makes me very nervous about current safety regulations and recalls. This is a major safety issue and I seem to be among numerous owners having this issue regardless of vehicle mileage.

6 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 03/02/2019

I have antifreeze in the engine it has been leaking fluid. I took it to a shop and they told me the antifreeze is in the engine and I needed a new engine. I also put a power steering pump in because the car was having issues turning two years into me having the SUV. I bought the SUV in 2015. It has been ine issue after another.

7 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 02/22/2019

My power steering stopped working abruptly without warning as soon as I exited the freeway. The fluid levels are within specs and there was no noise warning indicating a pump problem. I followed the lines and the rack and pinon and it is completely dry. Cant find any leaks. Chevy told me the power steering problem is only with Traverses of 2009-2011 and I am not included in the special warranty because I have a 2014. I purchased this Traverse 3 years ago at bob stall chevy la mesa certified pre-owned. I even purchased the extended 2 year warranty but this problem happened right after the coverage ended. I have 82,000 miles.

8 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 02/05/2019

Power steering issues: very hard to turn wheel when parking and at slow speed. It is like manual steering!! I have a small fluid leak at power steering pump and rack pinion boot. I researched this issue and its common. I then contacted chevy who admits this a common issue but yet an recall has been issue !! what is taking so long? help !!.

9 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 01/09/2019

Out of no where my air bag lights came on. The sensor in the passenger seat isnt detecting weight and stays off all the time now, also my service airbag light is on for the driver as well. I am also having power steering issues as well. My power steering fluid is full, no leaks but the steering is hard to turn. Had the steering pump checked and was told nothing was wrong with it. My last issue is with the speakers they cut in and cut out all the time and nine times out of ten I only have my tweeters for sound. Very disappointed with chevy right now.

10 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 07/20/2018

My Traverse suddenly started having issues while I was driving. Turning at intersections and at stop signs makes me so nervous. My Traverse hesitates when turning causing the car to move slower. It is also making noises out of nowhere. I maintain my vehicle and have had no issues with it until now. When I dropped my children off at daycare and came back out to the car I noticed that my car was leaking power steering fluid. This was very unexpected and so dangerous! I have two young children and they should not be in a vehicle that has any major issues especially this. I'm disappointed to see that a recall for power steering does not include my year! this is the same issue and there are so many complaints from others for my year for this. Please issue a recall. This is unsafe and dangerous!.

11 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

Power steering fluid started leaking.

12 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 03/19/2018

Steering locks up, there is power steering fluid in it, but having a major problem steering and making turns. Steering locks or freezes up and it won't move while driving. There is nothing leaking anywhere. Was there a recall for this issue?.

13 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 09/03/2017

I was driving down the street I came to a stop. As I began to go I tried to turn right and I couldn't turn the wheel it was so hard. Reminded me of my first car I had when I had a leak with my steering fluid. So at that point I try to brake and my brakes failed. I don't know what happened I began to roll backwards and the first thing I thought of was to push down as hard as I could and slammed it into park. While all this was going on not one single engine light came on or brake light nothing. There was absolutely no warning. I turned the car off then back on and it was as if nothing had happened. Luckily it was on a very quite and non-busy street and my kids weren't with me.

14 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 08/13/2017

Power steering has been replaced three times (now may have to be a fourth), once prior to my ownership (was deemed certified by a chevy dealer at time of purchase however I believe this was fraudulent). Mechanic said (at first replacement) power steering from my purchase was after manufacturered parts. This means when I had purchased the vehicle with 27,000 miles in 2012, power steering pump had already been replaced. Power steering has gone out on I-70 once go 75 mph. The vehicle makes noises when turning. Now again, leaking steering fluid and engine fluid. Check engine light keeps coming on and abs and traction control, etc. . . I called gm and they claim they haven't had any complaints about the steering however it's all over the internet about this year and model having power steering pump, rack and pinion complaints. I had also been told by a Lexus dealer/service in 2014 that it needed a rack and pinion or power steering pump. Gm dealership later determined it was power steering pump. How many power steering pumps do I have to put on this car? I contacted gm, they claim no responsibility despite other vins/years having these exact issues. Clearly, there is something defective in these subs that would cause so many power steering pumps to fail. Does someone have to die before anyone takes this safety issue and defective car serious?.

15 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 06/15/2017

The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact discovered that power steering fluid leaked from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (joseph Chevrolet in cincinnati, ohio) where it was diagnosed that the leak was due to a faulty power steering pump. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,000.

16 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 05/27/2017

Good afternoon. I have a 2009 chevy Traverse LS. I was having problems with my power steering and received the special coverage notice number 14329 to have the repairs done. According to notice, the power steering system was supposed to be flushed, the steering pump replaced and a new steering gear installed. I recently went in for an oil change at the chevy dealership in lowell and came across some issues with the steering. There was fluid leaking from the power steering pump and gear. It hasn't been a year and if these were replaced last July this problem should not be occurring again. How do I go about having this problem resolved? thank you.

17 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 02/18/2017

Takata recall my steering wheel makes noises when I turn right or left. It's really bad when I'm parking my car in a parking lot and need to turn to get in the spot or back out. It's also leaking fluid under my car, possibly the steering wheel fluid.

18 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 10/11/2016

Power steering assembly was in process of failing. Was told by service center that the teeth were grinding down and would shortly have lost the ability to steer vehicle. Only indication was the whine of the steering pump as it failed due to the combination of a seal leak and contaminants in fluid from the metal shavings from the steering gear. Unfortunately I did not have the presence of mind to ask for the parts or take pictures of the failed parts.

19 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 10/08/2016

I purchased a used 2012 chevy Traverse with only 34,000 miles on it. After owning the car for a month I noticed a strange noise when making sharp right hand turns at low speed (less than 20 mph). Upon examining the car I found power steering fluid leaking from the steering gear. I took the car into the Chevrolet dealership and was told that the steering gear and front struts needed to be replaced.

20 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

There is loss of power steering assist when traveling at low speeds. It is unsafe as the vehicle becomes hard to steer when turning left or right. This issue is known to the auto-maker and they only want to replace power steering pump and fluid. The power steering gear is leaking and gm should recall this unsafe part. The steering function of an automobile is critical as human lives are at the mercy of this component of the vehicle to operate as designed.

21 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 01/22/2016

Internal and external fluid leak. . . . Loss of power steering at sparatic times very dangerous especially on icy roads. This complaint is the same as hundreds of Traverse owners. I have owned nothing but chevy my whole life and would expect that they will stand behind their product.

22 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 01/05/2016

After noticing a grinding noise when turning at low speed, Chevrolet dealership states the power steering is leaking fluid internally and could result in loss of steering while driving. Repair estimate is $1,700. 00, not covered by warranty due to mileage. While reviewing complaints related to Chevrolet Traverse steering it is apparent that this is a very common problem. If you check "carcomplaints. Com" under 2011 Chevrolet Traverse steering problems you will see that the majority of complaints are the same as ours. Given that loss of steering while driving is obviously a safety concern, coupled with the volume of complaints regarding this issue, I was hoping NHTSA could look into it (if they weren't already). Several of the complaints I read were regarding vehicles with under 40,000 miles. It seems this may well be a defective or poorly designed steering system.

23 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 12/12/2015

December 2015 drove the 2011 Traverse to the grocery store. After parking the cooling fan was on after engine turned off. Very loud fan noise had me concerned. After driving home I notice no fan noise so I felt it was an isolated incident considering it is cool winter weather outside. Next a. M. We went to church approx 7 mile trip and fan was running when we turned off car again and saw puff of steam or smoke coming out from front of hood. Reasoned it was morning fog? or evaporating water! on the way to do errands 2 days later engine was running about 260* on gauge on dash. Fan came on when I parked and ran very loudly. I went straight to dealership which is across the street and met chevy service rep. He said it was just the car reacting to run the defrost mode on the ac system and sent me on my way. Before I reached our home the temp gauge was at 260* or higher because it was on the highest point on gauge. Returned the next day to dealership as car had now overheated again, no fan coming on at all, and service writer said turn it off before it does damage. Wow! left car and was called the next a. M, with diagnosis as bad water pump covered by recall. Work was done and then I was informed the rack amd pinion assembly was leaking and needs to be replaced and the engine mount is broken. I am sure the leak on the rack and pinion is due to overheating and extra pressure on the gaskets. No leaks ever noticed before this visit during multipoint inspection performed by dealer on 9/10/15. Area of fluid is fresh on rack area. Estimate at $1745. 00. I'm sure this recall will be happening soon. I just received the November 2015 recall on faulty throttle position sensor repair. I can only hope the recall for the steering system leak and failures will come soon. . Fyi we have owned 30 Chevrolet cars and we have never had anything like this happen or the amount of recalls occur.

24 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 10/20/2015

I have a 2012 chevy Traverse that made noise with turning, was leaking power steering fluid and became very difficult to steer while driving. Power steering fluid would puddle underneath the vehicle. I only have a little over 35,000 miles on it. The bumper to bumper warranty expired in 6/15. I took it to my mechanic who determined that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. I called chevy and they stated that they were unaware of an issue of this nature with my type of vehicle and that I had no outstanding recalls. They stated I needed to have it towed (they offered to pay) to a dealership to be accurately assessed as if my very experienced mechanic was not able to determine there was an issue. I was told that based on my VIN my vehicle doesn't have any issues. I told them that based on my vehicle the VIN has problems and that the VIN does not predict whether it will have issues. There might not be a recall however there are complaints to the NHTSA and a class action lawsuit. This is a safety issue to myself, other vehicles driving around me as well as pedestrians. I live right by an elemetary school. My steering makes a horrible sound and becomes very difficult to steer while driving.

25 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 10/16/2015

The wife complained about brakes sounding odd, a week after having new brakes installed. Took it in, they said they looked fine. Then all of a sudden her anti-lock break light and stabilitrak light go off while driving to work on a major surface street (50mph). Take it in to have it checked out, they find a sensor in the brake cylinder is bad, and the cylinder is gushing brake fluid. $800+ to fix. Plus our power steering is going bad. There is an internal leak in some boots that are not working properly. $1200 to fix. It's like they had a bunch of parts lying around, and they slapped them together to build a vehicle, even though none of the parts work together. The government should never have wasted the money to prop up a horribly inefficient company.

26 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 10/12/2015

We had a power steering noise. Took to our chevy dealership. Recommended power steering pump replacement under special coverage 14329(bulletin/extended warranty) they found fluid leaking out of the front rack power steering boots. Recommended replacing rack & pinion & proforming a front end alignment at a cost of $1119. 05 to me. We feel that this repair should be covered by gm since it is also all part of the power steering system. We discovered thru the internet that there is a class action lawsuit on the 2009 Traverse steering system.

27 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 10/06/2015

The vehicle has been experiencing steering issues for a couple years - loud mechanical noises and popping. I have topped of steering fluid reservoir several times and that quieted the noise, but there was no evidence of a leak on my garage floor until October 2015 (after service explained below). The popping became a nuisance again and I took into the local Chevrolet dealer to inspect. They found several issues in the front end that need replaced: rack and pinion (leaking), power steering pump, end links, bushings, transmission mount, struts (leaking). Steering component failure is a possibility in these issues and can cause loss of power steering in the vehicle. Loss of power steering would likely end up in an accident due to inability to turn vehicle as intended. Gm should issue a special coverage for rack and pinion replacement and strut leaks as these are very well know safety/design flaws. Gm has already issued special coverage for the power steering pump.

28 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 06/03/2015

My chevy Traverse was hard to steer, almost impossible to drive. I had fluid on my garage floor, luckily I live a mile from the dealer. After checking the vehicle they followed the leak and stated that I needed a new rack and pinion, power steering pump and then an alignment. Total bill $ 2,600 and they were not sure if this fix would the problem. They stated that they never saw such a problem in a vehicle that had less than 70,000 miles. Of course the original warranty had expired and the extended warranty. I bought the vehicle used. The dealer gave me the option of just doing the rack and pinion and taking my chances with the power steering pump. I declined all work and had my mechanic do the rack and pinion and it was still not cheap. And I had to go to midas to get the alignment. However the vehicle still whines and turns are still hard, you would think that a vehicle that cost over $30k would be built better. . . . I believe I have had 3 recalls and I am waiting on parts for another one. A CO-worker told me the same exact issue with his late model Traverse and class action suits. . . . . How many people have to have this issue or die before a recall is made. I am concerned that I will be in a situation and not able to control the vehicle.

29 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

I just recently purchased this 2011 chevy Traverse last night from the dealer. My first time buying a used vehicle. Within 3 months, my heat stopped working in my vehicle. I purchased the vehicle at 40,000 miles. Brought it to the dealer, and asked if there was anything they can do as I just purchased this vehicle not too long ago, and they stated there wasnt any recall. I would have to pay out of pocket to have this fixed. Just recently this month I have been having an issue with a whining noise when I am driving, and when I am turning the wheel. I took my vehicle to a mechanic and they filed all of my fluids, including power steering which was low. Found out that I have a leak. I started doing some research on this, and found out that all of the 2011 chevy Traverse vehicles had this same issue. I am going to contact the dealer today to see what they can do, as I didnt purchase an extended warranty with this vehicle. Should this not be something that is covered under Chevrolet if the majority of these vehicles are having this same issue?.

30 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 04/28/2015

I purchased a new chevy Traverse that now has 55,000 miles. During today’s service appointment the dealership informed me that the power steering fluid was leaking from the steering gear. The repair was estimated at $1,600 usd. The repair is necessary to maintain the vehicle in a safe working order but I’m disappointed that I’m having to pay for a very expensive repair on a relatively new vehicle. Numerous consumers are experiencing the same issue, I would hope that chevy would investigate the situation in more detail and offer to cover the cost of the repairs. I did notice a technical service bulletin on the issue (service bulletin 361329, action number: 10052379), but the existence of the service bulletin still resulted in me having to pay the full cost of the repair at the dealership. I believe that there is a problem that chevy needs to take ownership for the situation.

31 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

My vehicle started making a whiring sound while I was sitting still at a red light or stop sign. When I turned the steering wheel, the noise got louder, but it did not get tighter. I took it to the dealer and was told that my rack and pinion steering was bad and had to be replaced. Apparently the vehicle was leaking fluid which was causing the noise. I was told that it would cause me $1100 - $1200 to be repaired because it is not covered under my powertrain warranty. The steering pump is covered under a special warranty and can be repaired without any cost. My car is only 4 years old, I brought it brand new and have taken great car of it. I should not be having these types of problems so soon. I bought this vehicle because I thought it was a dependable car, but apparently I was wrong. This is a safety issue and can cause serious injury in the future. I am not happy with this problem and gm should be ashamed for selling vehicles that are not safe.

32 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 03/30/2015

Brought vehicle in for oil change, tech noted steering gear was leaking fluid and quoted $2000 to replace. After reading the TSB, several forums online and these complaints it has become apparent that rack failure is common place on these vehicles.

33 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 03/17/2015

I was driving around 55mph when I noticed my steering becoming very tight so I pulled off the road. When I pulled off the road and tried to turn into a parking place, my steering was very tight and I had a hard time turning. I was worried that there was a leak with my power steering fluid so I had my local garage check it, the power steering fluid was full. When I started to research the problem, I am finding that this is a very common problem with this year/make/model and wonder why there has not been a recall issued? my next step is to contact my local dealership, I have seen some quote the repair expense up into the thousands. .

34 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 02/09/2015

When driving my Traverse at low speeds around 5 mph while trying to park, my steering gets very tight and it is extremely difficult to make the turn into a parking spot. In addition the vehicle is making a whining noise. We checked the power steering fluid and it is at the correct levels. I took it to my local repair man and they stated that the power steering pump was bad and needed to be replaced. I then contacted my local chevy dealership to see if this was covered under my manufactures warranty and he stated that it was no longer covered and the warranty ran out at 3 years or 36,000 miles which ever come first. To make matters worse, when I spoke with the dealership, I was never informed about the service bulletin released in December 2014. I was informed by the dealer that it would cost between $1000-$1500 to replace the power steering pump. My local repair man had quoted me around $750. Therefore, I paid him to repair my vehicle because I didn't have that much money available for the dealer to do the repair and was very concerned with driving the vehicle under these conditions. When I returned to pick up my car I found out that the rack & pinion is leaking and will need to be replaced also! these issues seem to be an ongoing problem with this vehicle and I believe it poses a big issue especially if I am driving with my children in the car and my steering goes out. GMC needs to get on the ball and recall this before it kills someone!!!.

35 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

Failure Date: 02/06/2015

Have noticed steering being stiff a low speeds for about 2 weeks, and once had it go stiff while driving around 55 mph which was startling to say the least. This morning heard a whine coming from under the hood. Took the vehicle in to the dealer who said that fluid had leaked out from the rack and caused the power assist pump to run dry and go bad. Dealer says both the rack and the pump need to be replaced at a cost of $2,200, and said that the pump is not covered under gm's steering service bulletin 377272. Gm has had plenty of complaints over these faulty parts and fluid, and must take responsibility for putting people's lives at risk with a defective product.
