Rack and pinion is loose and wore out. Power steering does good turning to the right way but it is very hard to turn to the left. Acts like it grabs turning to the left, it does this every time I drive or a mechanic drives the car, 2010 chevy transverse.

12/23/19 while driving my car it began making slight whine noises which increased during turning, tires seemed a bit loose with driving, then when parking it was as if no power steering at all- checked ps fluid tiny bit low, added small amount. 12/24/19 same problem still occurring only extremely more difficult to turn, 12/26/19 had car checked by mechanic our power steering pump has gone out at 81k miles and in all probability our rack and pinion, this is a known issue for Traverses, there has been a special service coverage extension ( https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2014/sb-10056459-3388. Pdf) thru 100k mikes for Traverses 2009-2011, though when I spoke to representative she said 2007 - 2011 years, and the parts that need replacing are the exact same part numbers thru 2015 Traverses. The reason I was given is because it is for vehicles produced in specific- undisclosable locations which are in specific years and VIN numbers and yet the part is the exact same part that is being utilized in the entire span of at least the years 2009-2015. This is a huge safety concern as well since it causes problems with your steering as well as tire functionality. Why are the years past 2011 being dismissed? I was informed by both our local dealership and the online customer service for gm that our VIN is not included. This is not an isolated event. How can this special coverage be extended to cover additional years since all of the parts required to be replaced are exact ones utilized in each year? thank you.

Power steering pump and rack and pinion need to be replaced. $1500. This should be a recall as many people have this complaint.
The rack and pinion seals are leaking badly. The cost to tepair is very expensive. My mechanic says it should be a recall.

On July 11, 2019, while operating this vehicle, an error message appeared on the dashboard which stated, power steering malfunction. at the time of this error message, power steering had failed and maneuvering of the vehicle became difficult. During this incident, the vehicle was in motion on a highway. Vehicle was brought to a chevy dealer and the rack and pinion was replaced due to an electrical issue.

The entire power steering system failed with leaks in the rack and pinion box, the pump and the high pressure hose. The car is only 3. 5 years old and has 40,000 miles.
Turning car to right and felt car steering seize at 48,000 miles took to dealership they told me rack and pinion $2900 part that should not occur on car this age.
While the vehicle was in motion. A high pitched squealing noise came from under the hood when turning. The power steering pump had the proper amount of fluid and the the noise got louder. The rack and pinion had total failure while traveling at 55 miles per hour on the highway at around 70,000 miles. We had the pump replaced once before at around 40,000 miles. On the 2nd replacement, the dealer changed the pump number to the upgraded part they also said, gm knows about the faulty pumps and are replacing them with this newer part. the dealer reported to us that the pump needed replaced because if it wasnt, the pump would go out due to the damage it sustained. So, we did that with the recommendation from gm as well in a phone call.
A 2012 Traverse in pristine condition that has up to date maintenance through the dealer with only 41,000 miles, now needs replacement of steering rack and pinion as well as pressure hose.
Losing power steering fluid at the rack and pinion , had to have it replaced. This is a common problem with the Traverse and Buick enclave. I think gm should repair or pay for repair of this problem.

Our 2012 Traverse with ~57,000 miles on it had a power steering pump and rack and pinion failure. The vehicle became hard to turn and the two components needed to be replaced. I am told there is a recall on some of the model/years for this issue but not ours. I would like gm to investigate and include our year/model in the recall as well.
I purchase the brand new chevy Traverse in Aug 2011, about 2 years ago I was making a u-turn and the vehicle stuck on the road and would not turn, called the dealer and they said turn off the car and re start in 2 minutes. I had around 20,000 miles at time. Currently I have about 27k miles and 6 months ago I mention that we have some noise coming out when we turn the steering, dealer checked during my oil change visit and said its all normal. The noise was getting worst so took the car again at 25k miles and they checked in detail and said rack and pinion is gone bad, I was shocked that at 25k miles how this can be possible? they said its vehicle and anything can happen, they charging me $1861. 00 to replace as it is not in warranty. This is ridiculous that at 25k-27k miles, gm measure component break downs and there is no recall, I feel me and my family in danger on the road driving the unsafe vehicle from gm/chevy.
2011 Chevrolet Traverse rack and pinion leak and timing belt light came on. Car is well maintained, driven easy and has only 93000 miles on it. Gm says it is not covered. . .
63,000 miles power steering rack and pinion replaced as had leak. Was told by chevy dealer this would be $1700 to repair. Went to local auto shop and had replaced for $1300. 2wks later the power steering pump failed while driving with difficulty to steer. Local auto shop referred us to chevy dealer as this is a known issue with this vehicle and suggested we ask for financial assistance. Contacted chevy dealer was told power steering up would be $1300 to repair, requested financial assistance being this a known issue. Chevrolet customer service filed claim, was only able to get 10% off cost of replacement of power steering pump at chevy dealer. Chevy dealer declined my request to contact the district rep concerning this matter and also chevy customer service said this is all they could do for us. Considering the chevy Traverse made 2011 are part of a steering recall, I would like Chevrolet to add the 2012 model to this recall for safety reasons and all the complaints of this issue with this year model noted on the internet. I was driving in the vehicle with my grandmother who turned 94 yrs old that same day. I have 3 young children under 5years old who had driven in this vehicle. My concern is that Chevrolet is waiting for a catastrophic event with this safety issue before they recall the steering issues for 2012 chevy Traverse.
Power steering has become difficult to steer when trying to park or leave parking lot. The car is in the shop now for a > $1500 repair. Replace both rack & pinion and power steering pump.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse. While having the vehicle serviced, the technician stated that the power steering pump and rack and pinion failed and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. While driving approximately 10 mph, a loud sound emitted from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion and the power steering pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact mentioned that the rack and pinion was previously replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 46,000. The VIN was not available.
June 2016, approx. 114,000 mi - felt a lurch in stop & go traffic; flashed "service stabilitrak," "service traction control," "backup alerts = off". The check engine light appeared. A few miles down the road when traffic sped up, I realized I only had one gear and could not accelerate above 60mph. A serious problem on the interstate! several hours later, the check engine light remained on, but the car drove normally -- straight to the repair shop, where it was deemed to need $2400 in transmission repair due to the following fault codes: p182e & c0561. They will replace the transmission mode shift sensor and the transmission control module. The mechanic also informed us that we will eventually need a $700 repair for the control arms in the rear suspension -- ge has corrected a known fault in the parts. All this is on top of a $3000 repair done in April 2015 at 92,500 mi. For known steering defects. In that case, as the Traverse warmed up, the power steering got hard to turn. Gm repaired part of the problem at no cost, replacing power steering pump and gear housing. Another mechanic completed the replacement of the rack and pinion assembly that was also part of the problem. These are both substantial defects and repairs needed in a vehicle that was expected to last much longer before needing more than routine maintenance.
2009 chevy Traverse with 68000 miles. Vehicle has had steering problems which I brought to dealer while under warranty. Was told that sound (squeel/rev) was normal. Now car not under warranty. Noise getting louder. Take to dealer. Says I need new power steering pump, and rack and pinion. I notice there is a special coverage 14329 which covers power steering issues (pump etc. ). Price quoted to fix everything was $2500. I asked for price relief given the history of the power steering problems, I had raised the issue while under warranty, and the special coverage. Dealer and gm refuse to offer any reimbursement. Not even for the pump which is covered under special coverage 14329. I am now out $2500. This steering system was a lemon from the get go. Steering is a major safety issue. This should have been recalled fro all vehicles in the 2009-11 range for Traverse/acadia/enclave. It is not only irresponsible, but gross negligence not to address this problem and pass the problem to the customer.

I have been having issues with the power steering pump on my vehicle. I have had it replaced 6 times now in a total 6 months, I have a new on e put in it and it goes out in a few days. The rack n pinion has been replaced as well. I never loose any fluid the pump starts making a squealing noise and then goes out. I believe there is a issue with this pump, the dealer needs to look to this. They will not cover this at all, even I have the burden of proof that is not my fault and it keeps going out.

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. While turning right at 5 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The failure recurred numerous times while turning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering pump failed, which caused the rack and pinion to fail. The power steering pump was repaired under a customer satisfaction campaign, but the rack and pinion was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
Had my steering pump replaced at the dealership on a recall told me to watch my steering the rack and pinion did not get replaced on February 19th 2016 picking up my boys front and start shaking check power steering fluid it's on the low side been told it's my rack and pinion. Also my tire monitoring system like you can I coming on and off has been check codes are not saving when off same thing when I had my transmission redone codes are not saving on the computer.
Took vehicle in for oil change at harold Chevrolet dealer in angola, indiana in July 2015. Was told that the "power steering box" was leaking and given a price quote of over $1800 for parts and labor to fix. Was also told that multiple owners are having this issue but gm is doing nothing. Took it to local shop who replaced rack and pinions, plus alignment costing $1025. During research online, hundreds of 2009-2011 Traverse owners are having this issue. As of November 15, 2015 it became hard to turn wheel randomly at low speeds unless applying acceleration. Appears it may be the pump that they issued a "concern" for. I feel the whole power steering system needs replaced, at gm's expense. This is a serious safety hazard for myself, family, and other people on the road. A vehicle only 4-6years old should not be having these issues-- it is obviously faulty parts and/or production.
Whining noise. Rack and pinion assembly leak causing steering issues. Dealer replaced but stated not under recall although issue is occurring with this type gm vehicle. I now see that there is a class action lawsuit filed in California about this safety issue. Cost $1,500 to repair.
My power steering stopped working. The dealership replaced the pump, but said it stopped working becasue the rack and pinion steering was leaking. The rack and pinion steering replacement cost is $2100, which I need to pay. I do not understand why the rack and pinion steering is not part of this special coverage adjustment, when it is the cause of the part replaced as a result of the special coverage adjustment. I am also concerned that this is not a recall. When the power steering stops working, it is very dangerous. If there has not been an accident or death as a result of this problem, there soon wlill be, in the past year I havee spent $6,000 on repairs for this car, which has 82,000 miles. I have replaced the brake line for $1500, $2000 for replacement of 3 ignition coils and 3 spark plugs and a gasket. This is the second time I have had to replace a spark plug. Now, I have been asked to spend $2100 to replace the rack and pinion steering. Enough is enough, I am trading in this car before another very expensive problem develops. The labor cost for repairs is very expensive because the engine needs to be removed to reach the section that needs to be replaced. I was told that these problems happen as cars get older, but the number of problems the Traverse has versus the number of problems cars of similr mileagr has seems to be lopsided. This experience has soured me on ever purchasing a Chevrolet again.
Hard to steer at lower speed (when parking or coming out of parking, when turning) in one occasion I did hit another vehicle wile turning to my right, luckily there were not serious damages and no injuries to any of the parties involved. I can barely turn at lower speed, I have taken my vehicle to the dealership and they are telling me that the power steering pump needs to be replaced and the rack and pinion as well. Cannot afford over $3,000. 00 in repair costs. I did a little bit of research and found out that there are hundreds of chevy owners with similar problems.
I have been having issues for several months now regarding the steering. The problem is now occurring more often. At times the steering becomes stiff making it difficult to turn. Basically the power steering ceases to function mid-turn without any warning. The vehicle goes into manual steering and it is almost impossible to turn the wheel. I have had this occur when attempting to pull in or out of a parking space, turn in a parking garage, turn in a store parking lot, making a turn at a traffic light, etc. I have mentioned this issue to the dealer but said they could not find a problem with the steering. I had the rack and pinion replaced two years ago but it was not because of this problem. The dealership was making others repairs and noted that rack and pinion needed replacement. I have not received a recall notice regarding this issue. I noticed that there are numerous complaints regarding the same issue with the steering. Why is this problem not a recall? this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed before it causes a fatality. The steering problem concerns me and I am currently looking for another vehicle.
Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving at about 30 mph, the power steering lost power. The vehicle was pulled to side where the contact diagnosed and replaced the steering pump. Three months later, the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to a local dealer who diagnosed the failure and stated that the vehicle was in recall for power steering. The power stering was replaced. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed faulty steering rack and pinion that needed to be replaced. Additionally, the contact received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 15v415000 (structure). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 50,000. Fe.
The problem with this vehicle is loss of power steering when driving at low to speed especialy when turning in either direction. I started having this problem at around 80 k miles and its getting progressively worse. Now it does this when not driving. I took it to the dealer where I purchaced this vehicle. , jba Chevrolet in glen burnie , MD. I was told that Chevrolet was not coveing the cost of the power steering pump or the rack and pinion even though there are hundreds of travese owners with this same problem . This is truely a safety issue , not knowing when you could lose the ability to steer . !!!! and in my case at any speed.
Chevy recalled two parts in the Traverse line, a power steering pump and another part related to the steering. Recall number 14329. When these parts fail they can cause the rack and pinion to also fail. I have mentioned this to numerous technicians and they all back this claim up. Our power steering completely failed and chevy replaced the parts but this failure caused the rack and pinion to fail which chevy is taking no responsibility to replace.
Took car for emissions test and found that my rack and pinion was leaking. Service guy said I could lose control on the road. This is a huge hazard not only to myself and children but other people. There are thousands of complaints against gm and this faulty part! issue a recall immediately!.
Steering became difficult when driving. My 2011 chevy Traverse was brought to dealer, diagnosed failure of power steering pump and rack and pinion. Was informed that chevy would only cover power steering pump under separate extended warranty issued by gm and that rack and pinion is not covered and I would need to pay full cost of replacement. Steering issues appear to be an issue with the vehicle, this is a major safety concern that needs to be addressed. Gm should be required to extend warranty for entire steering system.
My vehicle's power steering failed, gm has a recall notice about the steering pump leaking but they would not replace as per the recall. They said my rack and pinion steer has also is leaking. I feel this is a way to get you to spend more on repairs. When this happened the vehicle was on a state road and I almost lost control because the ps assist failed.
Steering is loud. Hard to turn. April 09, 2015 dealership stated my steering gears were leaking and needed rack and pinion replaced. Quoted $1785. It's difficult to steer, locks up and is quite unsafe. Chevy should repair this issue at no cost due to the safety concerns and the thousands and thousands of complaints.
My power steering pump failed and the rack and pinion system is leaking on my 2009 chevy Traverse. After some research this is a very common issue the gm is not addressing properly. They will replace the pump but the cost of replacing the rack and pinion will not be covered. There have been no recalls and this issue. This can occur while driving and could cause an accident and even death. Gm needs to address this situation before that happens.
