While driving approx 20 mph out of a parking lot onto the main road and turning left, I heard a loud whining sound and felt a "thump" with some vibration in the steering column. The car continues to make the same sound when making sharper turns, like going into a parking space. I was told by the dealership that I have a power steering leak and need a new steering rack to the tune of $1300-1600 repair! this car only has 33,146 miles.

Back in September 2014, gm sent a letter regarding a defect in the steering column that causes steering to be very difficult when attempting to maneuver the car at low speeds. The letter states that gm would cover this malfunction without charge. When my car started having the identical symptoms that are listed in the letter, we called gm and took the car to the dealership. Per the dealership and gm although the symptoms are identical the origin of the problem is different; therefore, they refused to cover the $1,200 repair. It is unclear what the difference is and we have approach gm and the dealership several times considering the repair. I do still have the letter.

There is a loss of power steering at low speeds when making sharp turns such as u turns and turning into parking spots. The power steering fluid level has been checked and is fine. Purchased the vehicle in August 2009. In late 2009/early 2010 there was a recall related to the steering column. In the last few years there has been noise emiitted from the column, but chevy dealership said this was not a safety issue and it would cost over $1000 to fix. However, now it is a safety issue and is getting worse. There are hundreds of complaints online about the same problem. Chevy should issue a recall before someone is seriously injured.
While backing out of a parking spot, the steering column completely locked up and would not allow me to turn the wheel. I then attempted to pull forward at which time the brakes locked in place. Although there were no injuries, I can't help to wonder what couldve happened and what my response would have been should this had happened in traffic on the freeway. I had my daugher in the car and I am still nervous about driving this vehicle.
I see complaints about the power steering going out. While my car was under factory warranty, I complained to the dealership about the whinning sound in the steering column. The problem could not be duplicated while it was there. Now the power steering rack is being replaced. I see complaints about this problem and that it is not covered under extended warranties. Mine is and I am sooo very grateful. I have a new house a new clean garage floor. My husband and son first saw the leak on the new garage floor. We found he problem early. My son crawled under the car and took a pic of where it was leaking and I sent it to my service advisor. He called me back and told me to get the car in. I wasn't experiencing problems yet. I was lucky. If so many other people are having problems, why isn't there a recall?.

My car, a 2010 chevy Traverse ltz, had been making a loud sound upon starting. If the car was not allowed to warm up, it became difficult to steer. We took it to the mechanic, thinking it might just be low on power steering fluid. The mechanic stated that our steering column was shredded, and that there were metal shaving in the power steering fluid. It costs $2400 to fix. We have also had the air conditioning go out twice this summer.
Steering started to very sluggish when making a slow turn (parking, turn to driveway etc. ) some low noise developed and a loud sqeeking in the steering column followed. Loud enough to make passengers ask about it. Went to dealer and asked if they had a fix. Was told that I needed to have the oil in the power steering removed and unit cleaned, and new oil added. . . . . . . . . . . Price quote was +-$ 230. 00. Asked if there was a recall as this seemed a little strange, was told no ! so I asked if this was a fix for the problem? was told no! that this problem would return almost at once. Asked if this was in anyway dangerous? got a no comment. Am now waiting a call from dealer after telling service mg. That I had mis-givings about letting my wife drive as he had mentioned the possible failure of the unit. To say nothing of the possible loss of any resale value.
The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the steering wheel started moving without any response from the wheels. The contact mentioned that the traction control and the air bag warning lamps illuminated immediately after the failure. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a snow bank. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the steering shaft detached from the steering column. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offered any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 50,500.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while attempting to make a turn at an unknown speed, the steering wheel became stiff and difficult to turn. There was also an unusual grinding noise in the steering wheel. The dealer replaced the power steering pump yet the noise remained in the steering wheel. The dealer informed her that the entire steering column and wheel gear failed and would also need to be replaced. The vehicle was being repaired by the dealer when the complaint was filed. The manufacturer advised the contact that they would confirm with the dealer that the correct repair was being made to the vehicle. The current mileage was approximately 6,700 and the failure mileage was approximately 4,000.
