When going at low speeds and/or dle the power steering completely goes out. This makes turns and parking very dangerous. The fluid is full and there is no noise from the power steering itself. At higher speeds it operates normally. When I first noticed it we were on vacation had been driving approx 6 hours at about 70mph. When coming out of the mountains I slowed down dramatically for a tight right curve and found that I had absolutely no power steering. We stopped immediately and checked the fluid. Fluid was full. Problem persisted at low speed, turns and parking. Haven't noticed any noise or other problems. I see there is a extended service for some 2010 Traverse for this problem but apparently mine is not included. If this is such a big problem I believe the extended coverage needs to be extended. This could have easily caused a major accident.

Today I started to develop a whining noise and the steering has started to become increasingly harder to turn in the past week. It is hard to turn at low speeds. There have been various times where I have been unable to maneuver the vehicle when trying to park due to the steering becoming very stiff. I've also had a close call getting into an accident while making a u-turn due to the steering being nearly impossible to turn today. This is very unsafe. I was try to turn left into a parking drive way with oncoming traffic and cars behind me. Luckily they stopped. I couldnt make the turn at once. The wheel was too tight and I didnt have the strength to turn the wheel enough to the left to complete the turn. I had to go back and try again. I hit the sidewalk curb. And to go back and forth to get the car in a position enough to turn into the drive. I had a car shop check to power steering fluis and there was enough. They advised I come back because they were going to close so they could check further under the vehicle.

When turning the steering wheel, there is a low whining sound. The dealer says this is "normal". The steering column should not make any noise. Noises coming from a steering column usually indicate trouble.

Took my Traverse to the dealership as I needed new tires due to dry rot. This was discovered when I took it in for an oil change. It stated to them that I could hear a growling noise coming from the steering column when turning the wheel to the right. I was told that the power steering gear was leaking at the right front boot. The total cost to repair $1700. 00. No recall on this important part of the Traverse or any alerts or bulletins on this matter so the cost needs to be footed by the customer. As the noise has increased and now happens whether turning left or right and I have become very concern with my wellbeing and the passengers in my car, I have ordered the repairs to be performed as soon as possible. I had to pay upfront for the part as it is not a stock item. Consumer safety should be a top priority for gm. We should not have to become a strategic to get there attention. I have own many Chevrolet cars and so have many of my family members going back 3 generations. Too many foreign made cars on the roads today. Gm wake up!.

The steering has a whining noise and the brake has a squeaky noise that both feel unsafe to drive. Many owners have experienced these issue on Buick enclave, Saturn outlook, chevy Traverse and GMC acadia as well as others. No solution has been issued by gm and something needs to be done to remedy these issues.

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. While driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized. The steering wheel required excessive force. When making a left or right turn, there was an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel. There were no warning lights illuminated at the time of the failure. While driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver. The manufacturer was notified and no repair was performed. The failure mileage was 100,000.
Gm dealership service department found "whining" noise caused by power steering leak. Replaced power steering gear at a cost of $1781. A "service bulletin" was issued by gm regarding this issue in 2014. It promised reimbursement for this repair for 10 years from date car was placed into service, but only until September 2015. Clearly, this is a known defect in the Traverse.

We have many issues with our family car 2011 Traverse one being our power steering whining noise and it get really loud that we are having our 2nd issue in less then 4 months. We are just finding out they put a remanufactured part and master cylinder leaking into booster. . I drive with extreme care daily. .
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that there was a progressing failure in which the power steering suddenly failed. The contact noticed an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel when turning it left or right. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for further inspection. The contact received a service campaign letter from the manufacturer for the power steering pump and notified the dealer. The dealer indicated that the failure may not be related to that campaign without diagnosing the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.
I began experiencing a whirring noise when I would steer my car. Then one day last week as I was driving the steering became difficult and it felt like something happened with the power steering. I took my vehicle in to the dealer for service to find that there was a special warranty on the power steering pump and that it would be replaced under that warranty at no charge but due to the steering pump failing the steering gear went out and had to be replaced which was not covered under the "special" warranty and I would have to cover the cost of this myself to the tune of $1157. 62. The issue I have is that although I can afford to fix my vehicle, which I did pay to fix, I find that this is a recurring issue amoungst many consumers who own any of the vehicles on the lambda line which inlcudes GMC acadia, chevy Traverse, Buick enclave and Saturn outlook. This is not issue of cost to repair, this is an issue of safety that the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge and will not fix under recall. I am happy I found my problem before I was traveling at a high rate of speed and no one was injured.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. While driving various speeds, there was a loud abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel without warning. The noise grew louder and the speed increased. The contact stated that when it rained the traction control warning indicator illuminated continuously. The failures recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
I have a 2010 chevy Traverse which has a problem with the power steering components. Chevrolet has issued a recall on the cheap part, the power steering pump but does not cover the expensive part of the defect which is the rack and pinion/steering gear. Why, because they don't care if people crash and they make more money with the steering gear in repair work. If you own a Traverse and hear the whining noise from the steering wheel don't let the dealer tell you its no big deal. Make them change the power steering pump and the rack and pinion before you lose steering control like everyone else with a Traverse. Even better, don't buy a chevy. Now that I am aware of this issue and know that basically it cant be fixed with the Traverse and they aren't being forced to fix it, I will not have my wife drive this car with kids in it even though I just paid $1400 to have a repair that will not last.
I just purchased my 0 9 Traverse and I have started hearing a squeaking noise coming from the steering wheel when turning as well as a squeaking noise coming from the brake pedal. I have taken the vehicle back to the dealership and they have told me that gm has not issued a fix for that problem and that it is common for the Traverses. I contacted gm and they just says that there is no fix for it. I have seen on line that they have changed some parts in the newer vehicles due to a manufacturer defect. They say that it is not a safety issue, but people are losing power steering and I don't want to one day not have ability to control the vehicle. This issue needs to be addressed and fixed!!.
Increasing noise in steering column associated with turning the car. Chevy service man said I needed a new steering gear and pump.
I bought this vehicle in 2012 and the steering column has always made a weird noise. In September of 2014 while driving with my 1 and 2 year old daughters in the vehicle the power steering went out altogether. I got the power steering pump replaced the following day. However, this was just a short, temporary fix (about a week). The steering column makes even a louder and greater noise but the power steering comes and goes. It is very stiff all of the time. Makes driving a real chore, especially when you live way out of time on curvy back roads. It's only a matter of time before an accident occurs because the steering will be fine for a minute then you go to turn and it vanishes and you have to pull on the steering wheel to get it to turn. This is not safe for myself, family, or others on the road. I see many others have had similar issues. I do not like the fact that I have to worry every time I get behind the wheel by myself or with my children in the car if I am going to make it somewhere safely. Please help me with this issue.
Our Traverse has a groaning noise coming from the steering column at slow speeds. I had the dealership diagnose the problem. They came back telling me it needed a new steering rack because it will get worse and possibly I will loose my power steering entirely without warning. In doing some research and visiting with repair shops it is evident that this is a recurring issue and needs to be resolved by gm with a safety recall. Gm has since redesigned the defect for newer model cars. I can only hope this gets resolved soon before there is serious injury.
Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated when making a left or right turn, an abnormal noise emitted from the steering wheel. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician stated that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000. Pam.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while turning at low speeds, the power steering failed and the contact heard a grinding noise coming from the steering wheel. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 121,000.
Strayed hearing a humming noise from the steering column that changed as acceleration changed, then started having trouble steering in a turn at slow speeds, could feel a tightness in the steering column. Took to the dealer who stated it is a leak in the rack & pinion apparatus and will cost $1900 to repair. They reported that it is commonly needed at 60-80,000 miles (my vehicle has 70,000). I am hoping this will fix the problem but after reading others complaints, I am worried it will still be unsafe to drive. I do feel gm should respond to these common issues and repair their faulty vehicles before someone gets hurt.
Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a noise coming from the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the steering rack needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. It is difficult to steer and makes a noise when steering. Had the car in to the shop and he said power steering fluid is good and to contact the dealer because there are 1,000's of complaints regarding this same very dangerous safety issue. Called the dealer and they claim to have not heard of this issue. This car has had 6 recalls and now this very dangerous safety issue that had not been recalled. Gm needs to take care of this. I am afraid to even drive the vehicle because of the seriousness of this. Nor do I feel that the consumer should pay for the repairs when this is happening in 1000's of vehicles. It is obvious that there is yet another found problem with this vehicle. I am very disappointed in gm that they are not taking these complaints serious and fixing the vehicles.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph and making a right turn, there was an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel. In addition, the brakes made an abnormal noise and excessive force was applied to the brake pedal in order to slow down or stop the vehicle. The failure occurred on two separate occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering intermediate shaft and vacuum brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 53,470.
My vehicle has had a whining noise when steering. It also feels "loose" as if I'm not in complete control of the steering. I took the vehicle to the dealership and the service advisor stated that this is a very common problem and the steering could likely get worse if not serviced. He also stated that this is not an isolated incident and is very common. I have heard reports of owners of the same vehicles having lost control of steering. I have a three year old daughter and safety was a major factor in purchasing this vehicle. I do not feel safe knowing that this problem exists. I had the vehicle repaired at my own expense. General motors does have a bulletin on this problem so they are aware of the issue. However, I believe that the government should investigate as their might be consumers out there that are not aware of this safety issue. They may think that it is just a simple squeak and not as severe as I was made aware. Thank you.
Since October of 2013 I have been having issues with my power steering locking up or becoming so tight while trying to turn at slow speeds that I have to force a turn. I have take it to my dealership to have it looked at after reading the numerous complaints for the same issues. I was told that I would need a new pump and rack pinion steering, which was told it would cost me $1300 and is not covered under the power terrain!!!! I was also told there have been numerous complaints on the power steering making noises, in which Chevrolet replaced the power steering in the 2012 and newer models and which research shows that there are virtually no complaints in the 2012 models. I have almost been in accidents because the steering would like up while turning in intersections!.
While attempting to perform a left hand turn after receiving a green light, the steering wheel became extremely stiff. Continues to be a constant problem with a whining noise coming from steering wheel. Took to chevy dealer and they said rack "beginning to seap. " quoted me $1300 to fix but I believe there should be an investigation into this issue since so many other Traverse owners are experiencing the same problem.
Took car in for odd noise in steering. Was told pump was bad and seal was bad. Appears that this is a common issue with this type of vehicle and no recall has been made. Its not just one or two cars, after research is hundreds of cars.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that the steering wheel became difficult to turn and there was an abnormal noise coming from the steering column. An independent mechanic repaired the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 121,000.
We have a 2010 Traverse and like many owners the power steering has quit working at slow speeds and is a safety hazard. It is impossible at slow speeds to turn the steering wheel. It is very bad when trying to park the car or even turn at red lights. This is something that numerous owners have had issues with and is a faulty system. It started with a small noise coming from the steering wheel then progressed to every once in a while not turning to now never working at slow speeds. If this was not a common problem with these cars then I would send it to mechanic to get fixed but since there are many cars effected and even a class action lawsuit over this issue it does not seem right to pay so much money for a car that is such a safety hazard. Please for all the adults and kids riding in these cars check into this issue and get gm to fix all their safety issues and not just a few select models. This system from my understanding uses some of the same technology that the safety recall in place on certain models.
Took vehicle to dealer on Wednesday 06 / 05 / 13 squeaking noise / wining / it sounds like coming from steering wheel when turning the steering wheel left or right. Chevy dealer further inspected and found noise to be coming from steering gear housing. Recommended putting on revised housing to correct this condition and recommended to be installed and flush system to convert to atf. Told must perform this procedure to get rid of noise. Gm should repair knowing they have this problems with steering gear housing with no charge.
2009 Traverse that will not turn!! no noise from the power steering pump, just driving along and all of a sudden the car will not turn!! this needs to be recalled!! this is ridiculous chevy won't cover this problem! researched online and there are hundreds of customers with this same problem!.
I began to notice noise while steering and then difficulty steering, as though the power steering wasn't working. I had some previous undiagnosed leaks on the vehicle while under warranty, but those were never resolved. When I brought the vehicle in to have the steering checked, I was told I needed a repair that would cost $2000, and of course, it was no longer under warranty. I went to another auto shop who estimated a lower cost for the repair, the repair was made, and the difficulty steering began again. 24 hours after the supposed "fix", the car caught on fire after my husband pulled into a parking space. It was a total loss.
