Steering Is Tight Problems of Chevrolet Traverse

Engine idle down coming off expressway power steering was hard to turn ran off the road. Drove car the rest of the way home steering was still hard to turn in either direction, check power steering fluid and found it to be ok.

Bought the SUV used & I love it untill a couple wks ago tryed turning out of my parking space & noticed my power steering was gone it was really hard to turn! if I can push on the gas be pedal at all the power steering will free up & I can turn! but it goes in and out without any knowing! really disappointed! it's difficult to turn into a parking spot or sometimes to make a sharp turn onto another street or into parking lots with on coming traffic, I have to always prepare myself for it to go out!!!.

I have a 2012 chevy Traverse that I purchased used in February of this year. A few months after the purchase it started to develop a whining noise and the steering was hard to turn at low speeds. There have been numerous times where I have been unable to maneuver the vehicle when trying to park due to the steering seizing up. I've also had a few times that I was very close to getting into an accident while making a u-turn due to the steering being nearly impossible to turn and having to press heavily on the accelerator in order for the steering pump to provide enough power to complete the turn. I have never had a car that was this unsafe before. I brought the vehicle to a few different mechanics for an inspection and they all told me the same thing, the steering was defective and everything needed to be replaced. My quotes were anywhere from $2550 to $3200. So I brought it to the chevy dealer to have the repair done hoping that they would cover some of the charges to replace the steering mechanism. They completed the work, but gm refused to cover any of the nearly $2700 in charges.

Power steering is very hard to turn at slow speeds I have checked power steering fluid and it's full I'm very afraid this may cause me to lose control if it would happen going down the hwy please let me know what can I do.

Having problem with my steering wheel on my 2010 Traverse. Every time I turn especially when I'm trying to park the steering wheel is very hard to turn like if the vehicle had no steering fluid. It's problem that lots of owner with the same model have and I think gm should make this a recall.

The steering is hard at low speeds. Trying to pull into a parking spot the car doesn't want to turn easily. At other times it works fine.

I have safety concerns which puts my entire family at risk. I took vehicle to dealership and they claimed that it was the rack and pinion that was worn per the repair order which I paid $1600 to fix. Once I took the vehicle home, the same problem was still occurring. Very frustrated that the repair did not correct the problem. I returned the vehicle to the dealership where now they told me that the vehicle needed a new power steering pump. It was replaced and billed to gm as a "goodwill" repair order of $700. There is clearly a defect in the steering and hope that gm extends and issues a recall for the 2011 Traverse before a serious accident occurs. I do not feel safe in this vehicle even after the repair.

When making a left or right turn steering locks up occasionally . If you make a sharp left or right turn its as if you have no power steering. Power steering reservoir fluid is at appropriate level. In my research of this problem, its wide spread. Internet forums have much discussion on this problem. Its a safety issue, when the steering locks up and is too hard to turn the potential for an accident is great.

Intermittent loss of power steering at low speeds when turning into driveway or in and out of parking spaces. Also was especially bad when backing into a parking space on a hill, when I could not turn the wheel at all until I started applying gas to get the car moving. At these times the steering wheel is extremely hard to turn. I have taken to the dealer for inspection twice and cannot duplicate the problem while there. The dealer gets no error codes on diagnostic and cannot see any leaks or mechanical problems. They have contacted gm who says they do not have any bulletins related to this matter. This problem is very unsettling and potentially very dangerous. I hope gm will investigate and come up with a solution.
