general problems of the 2016 Chrysler 200 - part 1

I am reporting multiple safety-related issues involving my 2016 Chrysler 200 s. On 02/06/2024, after an oil change at a dealership, the underbody skid plate bolts were not reinstalled. While driving, the skid plate fell and I lost control of the vehicle, creating a serious safety hazard. No warning indicators were present prior to this failure. The issue was identified immediately after leaving the dealership and is not properly documented in service records. In July 2022, following a battery replacement by the same dealership, the vehicle repeatedly lost power and stalled, leaving me stranded multiple times. I paid for diagnostic testing, but there is no documentation confirming proper diagnosis or repair. I was later advised incorrect hardware had been installed. On 02/27/2026, I was told the check engine light was on and diagnostic codes were cleared without repair. There is no documentation of the codes or repairs performed. I was also informed on 11/19/2022 that parts were ordered for a safety recall. From that date until 02/27/2026, I was repeatedly told parts were unavailable. I scheduled repair and dropped off the vehicle on 03/13/2026. I received notice that repair had begun, but later discovered the vehicle had not been serviced at all. No explanation was provided. Additionally, service records are inaccurate. A vehicle history report shows service on 03/17/2026 at a dealership I have never visited. The vehicle was not serviced anywhere on that date. These issues involve loss of control, repeated stalling, improper repairs, failure to complete a recall, and inaccurate reporting. Documentation is incomplete or missing. During acceleration, thick white smoke began to come out tail pipe. Car instantly turns off in the middle of the street in rush hour traffic while I had my 4 year old daughter in the car. Police threatened to impound car if not moved immediately. Had to pay a hefty tow fee twice to get the car to the dealership. Somehow oil and coolant had mixed together in the engine. Dealer said I’ll need a completely new engine. I’ll have to pay 1600 to get a diagnosis of the “exact” problem once they tear down the engine. At that point warranty company will come out to see if they can help. I was quoted a possible 12,000 job. I’ve had this car for 7 months and had done all routine work since. I’m so hurt smh.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 146,000.

Unknown- I was driving and it was storming bad, I accidentally drove through this road that was flooded and my car then said throttle control and my car started to not drive as well then when I took a turn my car stopped and it would not move. I turned it off and it started going again, then when I was going up a hill while I trying to turn my car would not move, the vehicle stability indicator turned out and so many more signs, so then I tried to turn my car off again and it was stuck in drive and would not turn off, I wasn’t able to move the gears it was locked on drive but not moving so I had to disconnect my battery and then it started moving again, not safely but I made it home. Please what do I do.

I have two Chrysler vehicles of the same timeframe. This 200 c and a 2017 pacifica. Both of them have the 3. 6 l penta star v6. Both of them have had the same problem. Where the oil filter goes it is a plastic housing that goes to a metal oil cooler assembly. That housing becomes dry and brittle due to heat and cracks causing significant oil leaks. The van had to be repaired by the dealer at the cost of almost $1100. My 200 c started smoking real bad and actually had a small fire start on the back side of the engine that I was thankfully able to put out real quick. This is a known problem and from what I understand Chrysler has re-engineered these parts. This has been happening to a lot of these vehicles. I believe Chrysler should be forced to repair these vehicles via recall. This is ridiculous. I’m looking at close to the same amount to get this fixed and that assuming the small fire didn’t do any damage.

The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed a total loss by the contact insurance provider. A fire report was filed. A police report was filed, and no injuries were reported. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

While attempting to restart the vehicle, the message "waiting to restart" was displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The car wouldn’t start ? open the hood closed it and then the car starts.

While backing up in my parking space, my car completly shut off. The steering was locked and the car would not start back up. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to restart.

My vehicle Chrysler 200 2016 has several car mechanical issues. The shifting gears. Rough shifting while driving. The affected vehicle would lurch through gears, and it would sometimes shut down or automatically shift to neutral. Grinding or a crunching sound. Clutch slips or doesn't “feel right” burning smell or high engine revs. Car started rough, shifting and having transmission problems a year after we had it. Airbag sensor won’t turn off.

Electrical system under the seats smoked and went out for the air bags. Cost me $2,200 dollars out of pocket. I am on social security. Can't afford such dept. Brakes are sluggish and can't be trusted to stop quickly. Power train ,electrical system,engine not safe. Electrical system, service brakes, forward collision avoidance system needs to be looked at and replace if needed.

Car is stalling for unknown reason without any warning or light appearing on dash. Feeling unsafe especially when driving on the highway because I never know when it will happen. Has been happening every day for the past 3 days. Happened in the beginning after a couple months of having the car and the first time I took it in, they couldn't find anything wrong or replicate the problem.

I have been smelling oil an antifreeze inside my car for about 1 year. I am not sure if the oil will start a fire, or if the smell could harm me. I googled the issue and found that there seems to mbe a problem with the oil filler, cooler unit. I was able to shine a flashlight down at the base of oil cooler and could see antifreeze standing on one side and oil standing on the other side. I don't see any oil on ground but I smell it strongly and I have to add both oil and antifreeze every 2 weeks I work on my own car. There are no lights nor codes it seems to be a big problem on youtube and the Chrysler 200 forum.

About 2 weeks ago , my car began malfunctioning and randomly shutting off while driving. The car gives no indication that there is an issue before hand which is dangerous. It has happened to me while entering the freeway and while on regular streets. In addition, when this happens, my gearshift somehow gets stuck which makes me unable to move the car. Sometimes I cannot turn the car off, it would get stuck running. The shift would malfunction illuminating other shifts even though it is stuck. This issue has happened to me again in the wee hours of this morning at 3am on a dark road. I feared for me life… I see that this is an ongoing issue in many complaints that I see but there has been no resolve from the manufacturer. Please help.

My car has shut off several times after starting. I have had to turn the car on and then turn it back on. The car has shut off on me a few times while driving. I just purchased this car as used in August of this year (2021). I am afraid this issue could happen while on the highway while cars are going at a high rate of speed. This most recent incident was today as I was going off to work.

The Chrysler 200's engine keeps suddenly shutting off while driving, mainly while making turns on streets and freeway on/off ramps. There are no warning lights, sounds, or visual cues to indicate any sort of problem. Sometimes the vehicle may just stall, most other times it just turns off and asks that I switch the shifter to park to then turn the vehicle back on. This issue is very concerning as it’s dangerous for the vehicle to shut down in traffic and could prove fatal.

My car is using an excessive amount of oil. I did an oil change on April 4th and by may 4th my car was telling me I need an oil change. I had not even driven it the recommended 3,000 miles before doing an oil change. I added the 1 1/2 quarts of oil that my car showed was low and had only driven it for a 2 hour trip before it needed oil again. It also smelled like it was burning.

This Chrysler 200 will stop while I am driving for no reason!.

If the car is sitting in park while the card is running it will switch to neutral and the emergency brake comes on by itself.

As I was driving about 40mph and slowing down for a stop sign, the engine died out. Locking my brakes and my steering wheel. At this very moment the gear d was blinking on the dash and telling me to put the vehicle in park. The vehicle was disables and the ignition would not start the car until after several minutes and multiple attempts. This has occurred a total of 5 times in the last 2 weeks. This is very dangerous if it occurred while I'm on the freeway or in the middle of an intersection.

As I drove the vehicle off the lot located in modesto, CA I drove to my home address which is located in antioch, CA. On my way home the car started jerking when I notified the dealership they said they will fix it and to drop it back off. They had the vehicle for 7 days and did not fix a thing because the vehicle cuts off any power and gas control on the freeway.

Bought the car used in March of 2019. It is now spetember and I have had to change the oil 5 times just to keep the car running. It gives no indication of low oil. If I wasn't checking the fluid levels I most certainly would not have figured this out.

I have been informed that I need engine and transmission mounts due to jerkiness in car. I have also had issues with the car shutting off at lights, or any driving situation where I may be at standstill waiting to proceed. Traffic clearing or waiting for parking space. At times it take 3-4 tries before it restarts and there is no warning that it is going to cut off. Lastly, the electrical systems inside car are unstable. The air bag light goes on and off, the bluetooth connection for phone isn't always reliable. Overall I am disappointed and wish I was in position to trade it in. Please encourage people to note issues they are having as well.

Tl-the contact owns a 2016 Chrysler 200. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle started to overheath. The vehicle was driven to the dealer new smyrna Chrysler, 2555 state road 44, new smyrna beach, FL 32168, they determined that the vehicle had a blown head gasket and repairs must be paid by the contact. Also mentioned that the entire engine was replaced by the dealer bennett Chrysler, Dodge, ram, 1491 hwy 40 east, kingsland, GA 31548 in October 2019. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a complaint was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000. Bp.

The engine turned off while I was driving and the power steering quit working. The screen alerterted me to put the car into park. I put the car in park and was able to restart the engine.

Cars tipn needs replaced after 35,000 miles. Car initially set all dash lights off, one front and one rear led light remained on even after key was taken out and never went out leading to dead battery. The car died on me while driving it about 20mph as I was attempting to pull out onto roadway causing near accident. Been without a car for last 3 weeks while trying to get diagnosis and repair. Total cost from going to several repair shops to get diagnosis and part to replace it is estimated to cost $1500-2000 which I cant afford. I am making payments on a car that I cant even drive. I am a college student and this was my first purchase of a car with my own money. This part needs to be recalled. I have read multiple complaints with the same issue . One Chrysler repair shop made comment that he was surprised they havent had a recall on that part due to all the ones he has seen needing replaced. This needs to be fixed and Chrysler needs to be accountable.

As I was driving I started to smell something burning one of my children began to cough as I looked back at him and then out the windshield again I seen smoke coming from the hood area so I immediately pulled off the rode and got both of my children out of the car as we moved away from the car the smoke began to get thicker and the next thing that happened was my car was up in flames. No lights on the dashboard came on the temperature of the car was normal no alarms going off on car before or while car was smoking. I was on a city street.

I have a 2016 Chrysler 200 and of you are a quart low the vehicle has a sensor which tells the vehicle to shut off it don't matter we're you are at and you can only go 1800 to 2000 miles till it burns that quart off so when the vehicle dies the power steering is turned off and the steering wheel locks so there is no way to get off the road you have to stop the car and put in park to start again I called the manufacturer and they told me that means so safty is working properly so they can't do anything but to me that seems like a safty hazard to anyone in the car to get rear ended or in a intersection.

I'm buying this car this week where there any recall issues I want to make sure the dealer repaired them.

My car is struggling with starting. Multiple times it has left me stranded. First trip to dealership, they stated it needed a computer update. The problem got worse after the computer update and begin happening more and more often. Gives me a "service transmission" message. It's only at 67,000 miles and I havent owned it a year. Very frustrated. It is going back to the dealership tomorrow!.
