I have a used 2003 Dodge Caravan which I recently purchased in December 2008 from a used car dealer in west burlington, IA. During the 3rd week of January, I was driving and the van completely stopped and was not drivable. I was in the middle of a busy street and had to had people help push it into the nearest parking lot. I had it towed to a mechanic and when they went to look at it, they were able to start it up, keep it running and performed a diagnostic test on it and couldn't find anything wrong with it. Since then it has been running fine except for today when I was driving down a dirt road and it completely stopped just like the first time. I had it towed to my house because since it's a Saturday in the late afternoon, there aren't any shops open to look at it. I know it's not the battery because all of the dash lights work, the heat, interior lights, etc. I also just had it serviced at a different mechanic that the used car dealer works with for an oil change and they checked everything and couldn't find anything wrong that causes that. Plus both mechanics that have looked at the vehicle told me that they can't diagnose it if it starts. This is our only vehicle that will fit our family in and it gets us back and forth to work. When we talk to the people that sold it to us, they claim that this has never happened to them when they had it but I'm starting to wonder because I noticed that other Dodge 2003 Caravan owners are having similar "stalling problems. " our vehicle has 167,000 miles on it- it had around 163,00 on it when we purchased it. We would like to get this resolved. It's a good running vehicle when it runs.

This has been a continuing problem since I bought car, car just dies while you are driving and you have nothing but until you get car stopped. Then it will restart and drive fine. It happens at all speeds but mostly on the interstates. The dealer did replace the ignition switch while under warranty but not until I went thru 3rd tier myself. It has started again and the dealer can not duplicate it so they return it with nothing done. I even let them keep it 3 days while they put it through their email 3rd tier system. Only answer back was there are no notices about it and the last report I got back was nothing done. It happens at all speeds from 65 down to 5 when making a turn at a red light. This is dangerous and I keep fighting them and documenting it every time I take them in. There doesn't seem to be a way for me to complain to Chrysler myself so I am hoping that this will start. I also goggled Dodge Caravans stalling and there are lots listed.

Not 100% but probably 40% - 60% of the time I refuel - especially a full tank - the car will tend to hesitate and stall within the first 90 seconds of getting back on the road. Seems like it has not done it a lot lately but I just had some work done by the local Dodge dealer including new wires and plugs. When I left the dealership it ran fine. I put in probably 3/4 tank of gas in it and it began hesitating and stalling worse than it had in some time. The weather was also quite a bit cooler than it had been in 6 months. I also read an article in USA today about this issue which I have been experiencing since 2007 when I purchased the car used. I have had the dealer look at it in the past and the could identify nothing specific. Figured I would register the complaint since I heard others were having the same issue.

On Feb. 8, 2004, my brother-in-law (also an owner of the car) experienced a problem starting the car. After several tries, the car started running but very roughly. It was decided to drive the car home which was about two miles away. About halfway there, going up a slight incline, smoke came from the engine compartment. My brother-in-law pulled the car off the road and checked under the hood. A fire erupted as soon as the hood was opened. A minute or so later, another fire explosion occurred. The fire department and police arrived and the fire was extinguished. The car had to be towed away. The engine compartment was severly damaged, the dashboard was badly burned and the front windshield had a big hole in it. Both the fireman and the policeman commented that it looked like the battery might be involved. I don't know what they meant by that and I am still waiting for a copy of the fire report. We took the car to the Dodge dealer here in hawaii and he made the same remark about the battery. The Dodge dealer said the job was too big for them to handle and they were going to call another jobber to look at it. I need some advice about what I should do next. This van was converted for handicap use with a hydraulic ramp installed at the factory at the time of purchase. The van is used exclusively for my sister who is totally wheelchair and bed bound, having suffered four strokes on both sides of her body about five years ago. Fortunately, she was not in the car at the time of the fire. Please give me some advice on what I should do to determine how the fire started and whether or not the manufacturer is at fault for the damage to the van. Who can conduct a thorough and valid investigation of the incident? there was no prior indication of any impending failures. In this day and age, how can a car catch on fire without warning? the car may be a total wreck.

The vehicle stalled without warning.
I have talked with other owners of this same model vehile and they had the same complaints . I think the maker of this vehicle should do a recall and prorate a dollar scale on these Mini vans. For I trust the vechicles that follwed have to be more reliable. This vehicle would stall with me driving and is currently parked in my front yard undrivible.
My Dodge Caravan 99, stalls. I can be turning a corner, putting on the brake, slowing down and the car stalls. This has put me in very dangerous situations. My van has been at the dealership twice now. I had to ask for a monitor to be put on the engine to detect what was happening. This was not offered to me, but someone I work with had a Dodge van with the very same problem and they had a monitor put on theirs. Currently the van is stalling, I am pushing the button on the monitor hoping the problem will be detected. This is the third time the van has been in for this problem that they can not figure out. As someone I work with had a Dodge van, an older one, but same van, with the same symptoms it makes me concerned that my van has some kind of defect. As this is my only car, and I can not afford a new one at this time I am forced to drive it never ever knowing when it will stall and I will loose control as I loose my power brakes and steering. Incredibly dangerous.
