I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan that I have now replaced the serp belt 8 times and the tensioner 3 times and the belt just came off again 2 weeks ago. Every time I take it to a different place to be fixed because they always tell me that there is nothing that they can do. They installed a shield to keep the belt dry and after that it held for almost 2 years, but then broke again. The belt keeps moving over and getting "cut" and then breaks. The mileage on the van is about 119,000 now but I don't know what to do because even though they give me a warranty on the work, it is the same problem and no one seems to know how to fix it. I see that there are numerous complaints about this, is there anything that I can do????.
2005 Dodge Caravan 2. 4 engine. I have had the vehicle in twice under warranty to repair a "squeal" of the belt. It sound like the belt is not traveling correctly over the tensioner pulley. Now it has started the same problem again. Seem to do it after putting about 3000 mile on the new belt. (third time).

1. Vehicle: 1999 Dodge Caravan
serpentine belt slippage when road is wet. 2. The belt slips off the pulleys, steering power is lost and I get stranded in the middle of busy streets. This is a safety issue! (I wonder if I would have made it out alive if I was driving on I-95!)
on the internet there are 100s - if not 1000s - of stories/complaints: wives stranded in the snow with children, elderly people stuck in a street in a rainy night, and Caravan /voyager owners changing belt and pulleys 2 or 3 times, without the problem being corrected. It seems that the Chrysler corporation has willingly ignored this problem since 1996! I am reading of misaligned pulleys and motor mounds. This issue needs a resolve and a recall!
and. . . . There is a fix!!! please check gates part #38379k and goodyear part #49215k. So, there is a problem which is totally ignored by Chrysler
in a final note, I am going to buy "the fix" in order to be able to operate my vehicle with no fear of getting stranded somewhere in a rainy day or night. I believe that Chrysler corporation should reimburse me for the repair and replacement of parts - not my fault- their screw up!
and just to let you know that I called Chrysler corporation to find out if they would reimburse me. I called the washington, DC office and my called was routed to a call center in india (!). I asked to be transferred to a supervisor at the corporate office in the us, which I was. I spoke to a supervisor, who told me "I am sorry. Your vehicle is out of warranty, and Chrysler corporation will not re-imburse you for any repairs pertaining to this problem. "
I went out today with my husband's Ford aerostar, to check the roads after tropical storm fay (won't dare take my Caravan) and there were dozens of Caravan like Mini vans stranded in the streets of our city. Suppose we had evacuation orders for flooding or a hurricane emergency. . . . . Please do something about this!.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Caravan. On two separate occasions, the steering failed after the vehicle was driven through a puddle of water. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic shop and it was discovered that the serpentine belt slipped off. The VIN, speed, and failure mileage were unknown.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Caravan. The contact stated that when the vehicle makes contact with water, the serpentine belt, which controls the steering, detaches. The manufacturer advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. The dealer stated that they will charge a service fee to diagnose the vehicle. Updated 6/4/09 updated 06/09/09.
Serpentine belt comes off pulley. Occurred four (4) times within the last 12 months. Twice during wintry conditions of less than three (3) inches of snow and twice during normal rainfall. Most recent occurred June 29, 2008.
2002 Dodge grand Caravan makes chirping sound and have repaired it often at dealerships. Dealer says cannot be fixed is structural problem with fan belt and what it sits in - tensioner? - they are misaligned and cannot be fixed. Car was built wrong. Tired of noise and repairing same problem over and over.

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Caravan. He has been experiencing a recurring failure in which the serpentine belt disconnects while driving under rainy conditions. Whenever he drove over a puddle of water the steering wheel became very stiff. The vehicle would either be cautiously driven or towed to an independent mechanic where the serpentine belt would be reconnected to its pulleys. The failure mileage was 103,422 and the current mileage was unavailable. Updated 12/14/2011 updated 03/03/11.
99 Dodge Caravan in repair shop to have 4th or 5th belt tensioner & 7th serpentine belt replaced loss of power steering rendered vehicle dangerous, barely avoided accident Dodge customer service denied any knowledge of problem with this part until, after second call & demanding to speak with manager, I directly asked: 'are there any publicly available notices, warnings, recommendations, etc, related to the 99 Dodge Caravan and serpentine belts or belt tensioner'. Finally, this 'manager' told me that there was a technical bulletin (available to repair shops, not car owners) which stated that the vehicle should not be driven in heavy snow (deepest snow it's ever been in was 3-4"). If the CO. Had no idea, then why is there a factory-made part to correct it? and why is there no recall? why is this information so difficult to get from the company, as their customer? this seems to be a failure both on the part of the company (for hiding, not repairing this serious flaw) and the government (for not forcing a recall, thereby putting the general public at risk of injury or death).
On rainy days when making sharp left turn, the 97 Dodge Caravan (3. 0 v6) looses power steering and goes out of control. The serpentine drive belt slipped out of the tensioner pulley causing the power steering loss leading to this hazardous condition while driving in addition to the road being wet and slippery. There is a potential for a crash or deadly accident if this condition happens. This condition happened four times in the past two months.

Serpentine belt has fallen off on many occasions. Usually when it is wet out. I have had this vehicle to the garage about 12 times in the past two months and spent alot of money trying to fix this. I know there is a TSB on this issue. I feel since it is a safety hazard to be driving and lose all control of your vehicle that there should be a recall issued for this problem. I live in the northeast and it is impossible to avoid wet weather.
Serpentine belt comes off of accessory pulleys, resulting in loss of power steering and other vehicle functions, possibly at any speed. Wet weather is a constant contributing factor, although is not required for this defect to occur.
My daughter's van with 2 kids inside. (1) no cause. Four failures of same parts. Belt and related pulleys. Dealer(s) can't repair properly. (numerous similar problems noted on the net. ) (2)repeated serpentine belt failure - 98 Dodge Caravan, 3. 0l engine. Causes instant power steering loss, engine overheating and more. Could easily lead to loss of control, injury or death. (3) parts replaces 4 times. Not fixed, belts still squeal and will come off again. (just found out aftermarket goodyear and gates kits are available with redesigned pulleys and belt to address this problem. Chrysler dealer mentioned nothing about them) if only some of what I have read is correct, this should be a safety-related recall.
The serpentine belt kept coming off the 2000 Dodge Caravan when it rained. This resulted in loss of power steering. This started after having the original belt replaced due to fraying. The tensioner was replaced at the same time as the belt.
Serpentine belt has come off of pulleys 3 times during wet weather, once after tensioner was replaced. This cause a complete loss of power steering, making the vehicle impossible to maneuver. Several calls to Dodge proved futile, they state no such problem has ever been reported. I have found several complaints of the same issue, all stating they have reported the issue to Dodge. Still cannot find a fix.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Caravan. While driving 20-60 mph, the serpentine belt disengaged from the motor. This caused the water pump and the electrical system to fail and there was a loss of power steering. The mechanic inspected the vehicle twice, but was unable to determine the cause of failure. The current mileage is 118,442 and failure mileage was 118,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Caravan. While driving various speeds in rainy weather conditions, the belts in the vehicle become wet when driving through an inch or more of water. As a result, the vehicle will have reduced power, a loss of power steering, and the alternator will reduce its conductivity. When the failure occurs, the contact is unable to make any turns due to the loss of power steering. He has to wait until the belts dry before the power steering can become operable again. The vehicle has not been taken to a dealer and no repairs have been made. The contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 22,000 and current mileage was 50,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Dodge Caravan. While driving 25 mph in rainy conditions, the serpentine belt detached from the vehicle. This failure occurred more than 20 times. The mechanic has been unable to duplicate the failure. The VIN was unknown. The current mileage is 153,242 and failure mileage was 151,000.
The contact owns a 1998 Dodge Caravan. The contact stated that the serpentine belt which controled the engine became detached on five different occasions. The belt failed when driving at 50 mph. The belt detached once during rainy conditions , and several times during favorable conditions. When the belt detached the contact lost control of the vehicle and the steering became inoperable. The current mileage was 117,811.
March 3,2007 I was driving to work in the rain. I drove for 30 minutes and then the serpentine belt came off my 97 Dodge Caravan again. This has happened several times. When this happens, the vehicle is almost impossible to steer. Once again, I was lucky and did not have an accident. Secondly, my small child was not in the vehicle. This is a very dangerous situation and on this model and year of Dodge Caravan there are numerous complaints on the internet of this problem. I did miss a day of work and had to have the belt put back on the car, as well as having the vehicle towed for about 25 miles.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Caravan. While driving 15 mph through puddles in the road, the serpentine belt detached from the vehicle. The failure has been occurring for six months. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop after the first failure. Once the vehicle was repaired, the mechanic stated that this was a common failure in this vehicle model. After the second failure occurred, she conducted research and discovered a TSB. The contact believes that there should be a recall on her vehicle. The current mileage was 107,000 and failure mileage was 105,000.
- the contact owns a 1998 Dodge Caravan, and had to replace the serpentine belt 8 times since 05/06. The last incident was on 01/25/07. While making a 10 mph turn the serpentine belt came loose causing the loss of the power steering and brakes. The contact towed vehicle to a local repair shop and they tightened the serpentine belt, but they couldn't find the cause of the serpentine belt coming loose. The contact took the vehicle to the dealership and they could't find a solution to the problem. The contact stated that it happened on all types of roads and weather conditions. Updated 2/27/2007 -.
During a rain the serpentine belt fell off causing loss of power steering, water pump and other equipment. This is a serious safety issue, and Dodge has a TSB out. But they are making no effort to correct this flaw. It seems that anytime water gets on this belt it will come off. How many crashes is it going to take before something is done to remedy this situation?.
Serpentine belt failure, slips off when wet, steering fails.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Caravan. While driving 15 mph, the contact noticed a loss of power in the vehicle and its power steering. The mechanic stated that the serpentine belt detached from the vehicle. The contact stated that the serpentine belt detached on four occasions and the road conditions were snowy or wet each time. The current and failure mileages were 106,000.
My serpentine belt has jumped off the pulleys 4 times in the past year on my 2000 Dodge Caravan. Each time this happens, I loose all power controls. This problem could lead to a serious accident if someone isn't strong enough to manage the loss in power steering.
1) pulley / tensioner / serpentine belt failure in a 1999 Dodge Caravan replaced 3 times. 2) driving in rainy weather, drove through a small puddle in the road and the belt came off the car leaving me stranded. No power steering, no oil pumping through the car, etc. . . 3) Dodge claims they have no fix for the problem - we just have to keep putting on new belts and replacing tensioners. . Read more...
: the contact stated while driving various speeds in wet weather, the serpentine belt slipped off causing the loss of power steering. The vehicle was driven to the dealer, who reattached the belt. However, the problem recurred.
Subject: defective serpentine belt design I have a concern about a recent malfunctioning serpentine belt in my 1998 Caravan. The belt has slipped off twice last month while driving in the rain. The first incident left me stranded off the side of the freeway waiting for a tow truck. The second incident occurred when backing out of a parking spot on damp payment (no standing water) while at a rest stop many miles from home. Both incidents occurred on normal pavement and driving during rainy days, and without any warning. The van has the standard 3. 0 liter v6 engine with 88k miles, but the serpentine belt installed was less than 1 year old. Two sets of professional mechanics found the belt, the belt tensioner, and all related parts of the system in good working order (including the engine mounts). In summary, the system was well maintained and working as designed. The concern we have is the design of this system. The vehicle has been very reliable during the last eight years. But this particular problem is greatly distressing. Not only is the range of the vehicle limited to a couple of miles with a strong battery, the loss of power assisted steering makes this both a safety and reliability issue.
I own a 2000 Dodge Caravan. I have a problem with the serpentine belt coming off mostly during wet or snowy weather. Today was the forth time in the last year this has happened. The repair shop(s) reports no known fix's for the 3. 3/3. 8 engine. I also had one failure during dry weather. Researching this problem on the internet I see this is a very common complaint. . . . !. It has been for years !!!!. Because this belt controls the power steering it becomes very difficult for a strong person to control the van. Lord help the frail, the old or the young !!!!. . My 98 Dodge Caravan sport is having repeated problem with the serpentine belt and belt tensioner. From a quick search on the web it appears to be a common problem, that the belt would slip off when it gets wet. I have experienced this problem 3 times so far, twice in Jan 2006 and another one just today (Nov 06). I cannot trust the van anymore, I cannot tell when this problem is going to happen again and when it does, the van lost power steering and would overheat. Lost of power steering can be extremely dangerous especially when trying on a freeway, and being easily overheat would leave me stranded at possibly isolated places. This is a problem that takes repeated fixing yet would not resolve.
: the contact stated while traveling various speeds in wet conditions, the battery light illuminated and the steering wheel locked up. The vehicle was towed to multiple independent repair shops, who determined the serpentine belt slipped off and the belt was replaced. There had been no inspections into what caused the serpentine belt to slip off.
Loss of power steering and alternator charging - serpentine belt falling off after hitting small water puddle on 2000 Dodge grand Caravan. I lost power steering on a curve as a result of hitting a small water puddle. Vehicle has received all service maintenance including replacement of belt tensioner but still fell off. I am fairly strong and was able to come out of the turn. Someone with less arm strength would have gone straight off the road and crashed. Dodge dealer has no fix for this that they are willing to talk about. This is a serious safety hazard since minivans often carry a lot of kids and if this happens on a wet road there could be serious injuries and fatalities from loss of control.
