Horn Assembly Problems of Dodge Caravan - part 2

It was sometime in 2012, I don't remember the exact date. We were leaving walmart, when we tried to start the van, horns blasted, lights flashed, window washer spit water, wiper blades started. This went on some time before we could get it to stop. Once, it stopped at a red light and would not start back, it died in the middle of the highway twice. And several times it would start the horn blowing, etc. , when it was put into reverse. We called a wrecker once, had it towed to a Dodge dealership. They put it on an analyzer and said they could find nothing. Several months later, after it quit in the highway again, we took it back. They put it on analyzer, charged us $d180. 00. Said the problem was the ignition key. Told us they had no idea when the part to fix it would be available. I called Dodge headquarters, customer complaint, was given the run-a-round, told us they would put us at the top of the list. I said, so you're saying if we are in the middle of a highway, or interstate, Dodge doesn't care if we wreck and are all killed, possibly even others. He said no, he wasn't saying that, so I said, so what are you going to do? he said nothing. So now we are stuck with an unsafe vehicle (we only have one) which we are scared to death to use. Can we do anything else?.

When I tried to unlock it the horn honked but it did unlock and when I turned the key it started but the horn honked again. I couldn't get the heater or radio to work. I put it into reverse it honked and kepted honking. I turned it off and thought that would clear everything. Then I couldn't get it started. We went back into the store and when we came back out I couldn't get the frount doors to unlock. When I pushed the unlock button it honked and the windshield wipers and washer started working. I managed to get back in by getting into the back doors. I was talking to the tow person when I tried to start it again and it started but the lights didn't work. The fog lights worked so I thought I might try to limp it home. I went a back way but it wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear. I finally stopped and called for the tow. The next morning I took it to a mechanic. Everything was working fine. They looked at it and couldn't make do any of the things I discribed. The computer guy checked it out and said the part that needed replacing was not available because there have been so many problems with it there is a 2 year backlog making them. Dodge knows about the problem so if they can't get those parts out I think they should replace the car. Why should the buyer be put in the position of traiding in the car when we bought it in good faith and intended to keep it.

Air bag warning light is on constantly. Horn will not work . Cruise control will not work.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Caravan. While driving approximately 18 mph the contact noticed the automatic door lock failed and would not lock the doors automatically. The door fob also would not lock the doors when the lock button was engaged; however, the horn would blow. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact stated after disconnecting the iod fuse and later reconnecting it the automatic door lock function would activate. After two days, the automatic door lock would failed again. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000. Updated 09/27/11 the consumer contacted the dealer and was informed there was no recall and therefore, he would have to pay for the repairs himself. Updated 10/31/11.

Brake system failure. Had to have the brakes rebuilt. Brake problem indicator light kept coming on. Took the vehicle in for check and was told that it was just a problem with the computer. Brakes gave out one month after the warranty expired. Took the vehicle to an independent (certified) shop and was told the brake system needed to be completely rebuilt and that the brake warning system appeared to have been compromised, rendering it useless. Also experienced problem with the tire inflation indicator (dealership fixed this problem and stated it was a computer malfunction) and shorts in the electrical system that caused problems with the horn turn signals, lights, and alarm system. Dealership did a repair on the electrical system.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Caravan. While activating the keyless remote on the vehicle, the doors failed to lock. The exterior lighting flashed and the horn sounded, but the doors did not lock. While driving between 18-20 mph, the doors were supposed to lock, but did not. The vehicle has not yet been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 80,000. Headlights do not come on have to turn switch many times before you get them to come on and then sometimes it still does not work. Lights will also dim on their own while you are driving have actually gone off and had to pull over until I could get them back on. Mechanics say they can not do anything until they see it happen. There are never any mechanics open when it is dark so you can never prove this really happens. They have checked switches and things all seem to be fine. Automatic door locks just stopped working one day. Tried the other key thought maybe the battery in my key was dead. Nothing. The lights will still flash and the horn will sound when you use buttons on the key but locks do not open or close. The back door hatch seems to work but other four locks do not. Very frustrating and unsafe these days to be in some areas we drive without having our doors locked. Also you can only get into one side of the car and the have to reach over to unlock all others very inconvenient! I'm actually afraid they will lock and never unlock at this point. I've read many complaints about the locks and think Dodge should be looking into this seriously. I have also read a report about the lights and am glad someone else has experienced this so I know I am not crazy. This is also a very huge safety issue and should be looked at immediately!.

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Caravan. While the vehicle was parked, the contact attempted to use the horn, but it did not work. Approximately four days after the horn failure, the air conditioning failed as well. The contact suffers from a health condition and has been forced to monitor her vitals twice a day due to the failure. Approximately two days later, the radio failed and the instrument panel lights illuminated. There were no warning indicators prior to the failures. The manufacturer has not been notified and the vehicle has not been repaired. The current mileage was 40,000 and failure mileage was 37,000.

The horn on my 2006 Dodge Caravan honks spontaneously. This occurs usually when turning right but it has occurred while driving straight. This is an unsafe condition since the honking frightens and distracts the driver and passengers. The vehicle has been taken to the Dodge dealer in harlingen, TX, but the service department refused to work on the vehicle as they could not replicate the problem in the shop.

The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Caravan. On five separate occasions, the exterior and interior lights would not work, the doors would lock and unlock automatically, the windshield wipers sprayed wiper fluid, and the horn sounded on its own. The vehicle was taken to a dealer three times and the ecm was replaced during the most recent visit. The current mileage was 9,000 and failure mileage was 700. Updated 09/15/08 the dealer the consumer the windshield wiper not working was due to no output signal from the multi-function switch. When the consumer turned on the high beams, the front windshield wipers came on instead and would not turn off. The blinkers did not work, the ac and radio stopped working, but after parking and restaring the vehicle, they worked again. When the consumer turned on the vehicle, everything went haywire; the the front and rear wipers came on, spraying windshield wiper fluid, all the lights were flashing, the locks were locking and unlocking and the horn starting beeping. On another occassion, all the lights went out, leaving the consumer with no headlights, taillights, blinkers etc. The dealer replaced a module in located in the fuse box. The consumer stated it has been 4 days since the replacement, and so far there have been no problems. Updated 09/24/08.

The following item needs to be revisited and include the year 2005 for the Dodge Caravan. This morning I had this problem diagnosed on 2005 Dodge Caravan. The dealer wanted $212. 00 for the part and $100. 00 labor to correct this problem. Nhtsa action number : ea04013, NHTSA recall campaign number : 04v480000; date investigation opened : June 4, 2004, and date investigation closed was may 25, 2005 . Summary: the driver's air bag clock spring can develop an open-circuit condition, resulting in nonfunctional driver-side frontal air bag, horn, cruise control , if equipped, and/or steering wheel radio control , if equipped. In its October 5, 2004 letter to NHTSA, daimler/Chrysler stated that it will conduct a safety recall and replace the clocks prying assembly on all the 1998--2000 daimler/Chrysler minivans, built between March 1998 and August 2000 with 70,000 miles or less. Ialso, t will provide a lifetime warranty for the 1998. 5-2000 minivans, regardless of mileage. The details of the corrective action ere described in daimlerchrysler's letter . See recall 04v480000. The agency believed that further expenditure of agency resources did not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation did not constitute a finding by NHTSA that no safety-related defect existed with respect to those vehicles covered only by the lifetime warranty. The agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances. See page 2 for additional information.

: the contact stated the wipers and horn intermittently malfunction. While this occurred the horn blew and the headlights flickered. Although several inspections have been made, the dealer can not duplicate the problem.

2002 Dodge Caravan I've had since new, has a horn that has progressively lost areas on the steering wheel where it can be activated. I've never had an accident with it, but nearly had a couple because of this problem. It has gotten worse since its inception over 4 years back. Due to high cost of repair by Dodge I have opted to live with the problem. But if this is something endemic to this, or other Chrysler vehicles, I'd like to have it fixed. Horns should not spontaneously degrade like this. The problem is obviously in the switch in the steering wheel.

I own a 2005 Dodge Caravan and the power locks quit working, the horn blows and the lights blink when you push the keyless button but the locks don't lock or unlock. This is very dangerous as the kids in the back can open the doors and we think they are locked. I have asked the Dodge garage about a fix and am told it needs a computer flash fix or something for $130. 00. This is a safety issue and should be recalled and fixed by the manufacturer. Also the doors no longer lock when the speed reaches 20 mph.

I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan that the gauges do not register October of last year, the lights, horn, turn signals and accessories still work, on the caution panel the abs light stays on, the Dodge dealer(ozark, alabama) has replaced the vehicle computer, and electrical block under the hood it works for about two months then go dead again.

The caller complained about electrical system problem. He states that headlights will turn off at night without warning. The windshield wipers will shut off as well. Sometimes the headlights and windshield wipers will come back on, and sometimes they won't come on at all. Also, the horn blows, and the dashboard lights will be on, and the automatic headlights will not shut off when the vehicle is turned off. Dealer said they do not know what the problem is. Another dealer replaced the body control module. Manufacturer said to continue to work with dealer.

The cruise control,and horn began malfunctioning about 6 months after I bought my used Mini van. I now have no horn or cruise and air bag is is dought. I have heard that the clockspring in the 1996 Dodge vans have been defective. I need to know if the new ones have been inproved, or if they or going to be replaced as a matter of safty. Also from time to time the wiper blades come on and go off by them selves. And one time the radiator fan came on the middle of the night by it self and drained the battery dead. I also have a simmy in the front end at 35 to 45 miles per hour.

A couple days before the horn completely quit working. The air bag light would come on then I honked the horn and it honked different than normal, not a full honk. The next day the air bag light stayed on and when I went to honk the horn it didn't work anymore,the air bag light stays on all the time now. Dt.
