2 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1999 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 02/22/2005

While driving 30-35 mph, smoke started coming from under the hood. The consumer was able to pull the vehicle off the street. The local police officer instructed the consumer to turn the vehicle off. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop. The mechanic and the insurance inspector confirmed that the problem was an electrical wiring harness.

3 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 03/13/2003

1998 Dodge Caravan: (1. )twice in the past two years "flex plate" between the engine and transmission has failed breaking in the center imitating the sound of a failing main bearing. Under 100,000 miles. (2. ) transmission failed 100,000 mi. , (3. )wiring harness caught fire while engine running - destroyed harness. (sparks shooting out from beneath vehicle - fire extinguished before major damage @ 110,000 miles. ,000 mi. ( 4. ) headlight lens plastic turned milky and inhibits proper light projection - difficult to see well at night even when lights are on bright.

4 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1996 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 07/26/2001

More than a dozen times this van will not start. Dealership cannot locate problem, and usually it occurs from cold start, but has also occurred over 5 times while driving and this is not safe. Also lost transmission sensor and that killed car while driving but has been replaced. Chrysler is not helping and I am nervous driving my kids in this van. Had it 2 years and have been stranded more than a dozen times. Noticed others with similar unsafe situations and hope Chrysler will address them soon.

5 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1997 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 07/04/2001

While driving at 25 mph consumer noticed white smoke coming from tail pipe. Then, white smoke and flames were coming from under the hood. Consumer stopped car and turned ignition off. Consumer exited the car, and vehicle caught on fire. Consumer feels this may related to recall for fuel leakage. Consumer states vehicle was in shop for transmission problems on February 16th, 2001.

6 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1997 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 11/15/2000

Replacement of failed bulb caused abrasions to hand access door is too small, and a wiring harness obstructs access to light socket. Two bulbs shattered. Dealer had to disassemble battery and electrical bus to access the light socket, 30 min labor, $45 cost. Difficulty of replacement discourages safe maintenance of lighting, and cuts your hands.

Electrical component failures have resulted in five visits, four repairs - counting this current incident. Warranty issues have prevented immediate repair, even though we hold an extended gold warranty. Dealer claims clockspring involvement - customer claims operation perfect without for several months. Customer left clockspring unrepaired due to warranty issue, since, a possible recall is under review. Customer refuses payment for repair. Dodge is unresponsive. Dealer is unresponsive. Lawsuit will be pursued.

The wiring harnass is resting on top of the ignition coil causing the wires going to the fuel injectors to melt.

12 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1996 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 06/01/1998

Consumer was traveling 60mph on highway. A motorist was hunking horn to get consumer's attention. When looking though the rearview mirrior he saw black smoke coming from underneath vehicle. Consumer had to pull over on the shoulders of the road, and he/ his family jumped out of vehicle. When opening the hood flames came bursting out. Vehicle burned to a crisp, and was totaled.

13 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1996 Dodge Caravan

Wire harness in engine compartment had an electrical short, resulting in a fire on driver side of compartment. Fire was put out by fire department. Dealer has not been ocntacted at this time.
