37 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 09/01/2000

Front disc brakes will heat up and separate in half and half of the brakes will fall out due to the separation causing complete failure of brakes. Dlr claims it is glue that separates due to the heat. Consumer replaced front disc brakes but defect will reoccur. So far consumer has replaced it 3 times and it will only last about 3 months.

38 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 08/20/2000

Rotors (front discs) warp extemely quickly because of cylinder seal. Seal is allowing brake pads to remain in contact with rotors. Braking at high speed causes the front end to vibrate and is very difficult. Rotors turned and pads replaced at 36000, and is needed again at 59000. This vibration is also causing the front end to get out of alignment very quickly. In 59000 it has required 4 major alignments and is now in need of 5th.

40 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 07/18/2000

I would like to question of the quality of this braking system and have it checked out. I have had numerous visits to the dealer and have replaced the front rotors 4 times. I have had the rear drums and shoes replaced. I have complained about the front calipers and finally got the right front replaced in October 2000. My main consern would be that the calipers are hanging up and the rotors are heating causing warpage, or that the materials used in these components are inferior and should be improved. If the calipers are heating up the system, perhaps this could lead to fluid heat and failure thereof.

41 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 05/24/2000

Brakes continue to wear out at about 4-5000 miles. When worn, the brakes begin to vibrate and vehicle has difficulty stopping. The dealership has replaced the brakes three times and the front rotors 2 times. They believe that it is not a big problem. Or maybe they are waiting to me to get injured in an accident before the admit the vehicle is a lemon. I would appreciate it if you can provide me any help. Thank you.

42 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 05/05/2000

I complained about a vibration during braking, was told the rotors and pads were warped, I had them resurfaced at 350. 00 and less than a month later I am having the same problem. . . All this at 19,000 miles (all highway miles) Chrysler says it's not a warranty item. . . . . .

43 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/01/2000

Brakes pulsate during medium application. Dealer found rotors warped and required milling and shoe replacement. Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me and a posible safety problem but dealer says its a wear item. The shoes still had 75%+ of the pad left. I see several complaints like this one here.

44 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 09/15/1999

This truck has ruined two sets of rotors in under 22k miles!.

45 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 06/25/1998

I have had the brakes replaced twice so far it is pulling to the right again , so I will be in to have them replace the brakes for the third time, I was told bye the dealer personel, that they are aware of my type of truck haveing troubles with the front axle brakes, refering to the heavy duty models with dana 60 axles , I was told that the v10 and the deisle 4x4 trucks have the same troubles , im worried that once my warrenty expires I will be left with a truck that pulls to the right, I love the truck , but now im not sure what to do , it seems to be needing replacement every 7 to 10,000 miles. They also said they noticed a slight leak of power steering fluid , but I was told that was normal , (my thought) was it was leaking because the truck is pulling to the right and im turning the wheel to the left to compinsate , and to me that puts preshure on the power steering thats not normal , but im not the macanic , please note the dealership is nice and freindly, I think I just got a bad front brake set up on my truck.

46 Brake Disc problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/29/1998

47 Brake Disc problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 06/12/1997

The vehicle is at 40,000 miles and had 4 sets of brake rotors and calipers replaced on the front wheels, caused extended stopping distance. Dealer cannot determine problem.

48 Brake Disc problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

I am a canadian Dodge truck owner that feels that your organization may wish to keep tabs on a possible problem with the front disc brakes on the 1997, Dakota. I've had 3 sets of rotors and pads intalled now and still get squealing grinding and grabbing. I think there is more to problem than Chrysler leads me to believe.

49 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Continuing problem with extraordinary wear of brake components. Front rotors turned at 17,000 miles current mileage 31,000 and system is in need of repairs again. The vehicle will almost "jump" off the ground when brakes are applied in normal conditions. If the road is wet they will lock under normal pressure. Dealer states this is normal wear and is not a manufactures problem. I have never owned a vehicle that the brake system has worn out twice within 31,000 miles. This vehicle is not used for any commercial enterprise, only personal use and the majority of the mileage has occured on interstate highway driving conditions where braking is lite and infrequent. Research on the internet has provided me with many other like complaints from other Dakota owners. The manufacturer has sold me a vehicle with inherently defective brakes which are failing prematurely under normal driving conditions. I have another appointment for repairs in the morning.

50 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Premature wear of brake rotors and pads. Please provide additional information.

51 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

We have taken this vehicle to the dealer 5 times for the rotors. 4 of the times they replaced the rotors and once they only cut them. We purchased this vehicle new and this is not normal as the dealer tried to claim in the beginning. The 4th time the dealer replaced the rotors and disc brake pads on the front and also replaced the valve , with switch assembly, brake combination. This work was done on the vehicle at 34,281 miles and now we are at 45,000 approx. And the rotors are shot again for a 5th time. This time in the vehicle also needed to have the sway bar bushing replaced. This vehicle is only 1 year old.

52 Brake Disc problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

Brakes make metallic noise---had rotors turned and new pads installed, no change--mechanic can find no reason for noise. Happens only after vehicle driven for a few miles. When brake is disengaged a small jolt is felt moments after.

53 Brake Disc problem of the 2001 Dodge Dakota

Complained to woods Dodge in brevard nc about noise in front and slight bump in brakes at 12000 miles. Dealer said it was normal due to the type of brakes pads used and said to drive it. We drove it unitl it had 24000 miles at which time the bumping became a shake during braking. I suspected warped rotors and the dealer confirmed same. The dealer tried to charge me for the repair and also stated that the pads were bad due to the bad roror. I disagreed with the dealer and the mechanic said that it was a design flaw and Dodge used substandard rotors that heated easily. If water was splashed on the rotors they would warp. This would be especially present in vechicles driven in the mountains. I continued to argue with the service manager but he still charged me for the repair but did reduce the charge some. Now at 37000 miles I am experiencing the same problem. The mechanic did recommend that I buy an aftermarkey roter since the Dodge rotor was no good! wow what a comment from a Dodge dealership. Anyway this is a dangerious situation since the warped rotors could heat up and crack causing a wheel lock up. The warpage can also cause reduced stopping ability. I think if you look into this further that you will find other info where the rotors have to be turned frequently but dealers who are lining their pockets due to a manufacture defect and substandard parts. If these rotors are so thin or of material that warp this easily then their should be a recall and better rotors installed onto these vehicles.

54 Brake Disc problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

Owner has to change pads and rotors too many times with barely any mileage on the vehicle.

55 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Factory brake components not adequate for stopping this trucks. Everyone who owns a Dakota has a problem with frequent brake rotor warpage. This could be very dangerous Dodge refuses to do anything about it. Owners forced to buy expensive brake overhauls every few thousand miles. . Read more...

56 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

The rotors have continuely warp at about every 12000 miles. I have had them turned 4 times and installed new rotors at about 38000 miles. They are agained warped at 60,000 miles and need to be turned again. Vechile vibrates at 30 to 40 mph when brakes are applied. When rotors are turned the problem goes away for a while. Dt.

57 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Dealer indicated that manufacterer is aware of design defect with no fix commited. The front brake rotors warp over time which degrades the braking system performance and confuses the anti-lock braking system in 55000 miles. Rotors have been already turned twice and are already warped again. Dt.

58 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Vibration throughout the truck was first noticed when applying the brakes at 7k miles. The dealer was contacted and they "resurfaced the pads and rotors" but found no indication of a problem. At 14,500 miles the dealer replaced the drums, rotors, pads, and shoes to stop severe vibration when brakes were applied. By 19,000 miles the vibration had started back. At 24,000 miles the vibration is sever again.

59 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

When brakes are applied vehicle vibrates. Dealer has inspected vehicle. Vehicle surges/oscillates when braking from approx. 45 mph to 0 mph.

60 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

The front braking system is extremely undersized. The rotors warp quickly due to overheating. Materials used are very cheap. The right side caliper pins have both stipped out their threads requiring me to install oversized self-tapping caliper pins. The Dodge dealer I took it to called me a liar and said that I stripped out the pin threads. I completed the repairs myself and installed aftermarket rotors and pads. Dodge refused to do anything about the problem.
